THANK YOU AUSTRALIA!
A massive thank you to Ministry Of Sound Australia for inviting me to DJ on their Testament 25 Tour recently alongside fellow Brits Smokin’ Jo, Paul Oakenfold and Utah Saints as well as Aussie DJs Sgt Slick and Mark Dynamix.
The tour took us to the White Bay Power Station in Sydney (twice), The Timer Yard in Melbourne, Miami Marketta on The Gold Coast, Superordinary in Brisbane and the Court in Perth.
All of the venues were amazing and the energy from the crowds was incredible which made for six huge gigs.
As the theme of the tour was the 1990s and I had several gigs in quick succession, I set myself a challenge to play six different sets to keep things fresh for me and I managed to do so with just a few tunes getting repeated throughout the tour. You can listen to my DJ sets from Australia in the player below.
It really was great to spend some quality time with my fellow DJs rather than the brief encounters we usually have a gigs and we all enjoyed hanging out immensely. It was also good to catch up with lots of old friends and faces who have all moved to Australia in recent years too.
The welcome and hospitality from Australia was wonderful too and while I had some time off I cycled over 150km in Sydney, The Gold Coast, Brisbane and Perth on my Brompton folding bike which I’m so glad I brought with me.
So thank you Australia for the most incredible time and I hope to see you all again soon.

Meet Brisbane's brightest queer breakout artist Hope D
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/meet-brisbanes-brightest-queer-breakout-artist-hope-d/
Meet Brisbane's brightest queer breakout artist Hope D
Tumblr media
Hope D is one of Brisbane’s brightest queer music artists. She spoke to QNews about her music and mentoring, collaborating with The Veronicas, and making blue cheese gin.
Hope D is a vibrant queer singer-songwriter and musician hailing from Brisbane.
At just 25, she has already made significant waves in the music scene since her debut single Swim dropped in 2019.
Her unique blend of emotive storytelling and infectious melodies quickly garnered attention, culminating in her hit single Second, which impressively secured the no.69 spot on Triple J’s Hottest 100 in 2020.
Hope’s talent has not gone unnoticed, as she was honoured with Queensland Music (QMusic) Awards in both 2020 and 2021, solidifying her place as a rising star in the local Brisbane music scene.
Her discography includes the EP Cash Only (2021) and her debut studio album Clash of the Substance (2023), both of which reflect her growth and commitment to pushing her musical skills.
We spoke to Hope D about her love for LGBTQIA+ culture and local music, along with her commitment to supporting emerging artists.
You have accomplished many achievements in your career. What is your personal favourite so far?
It has to be the QMusic Award back in 2021. The second one I got, this time for ‘Best Rock’ song and I honestly wasn’t expecting it at all. It was just such a great night of celebration. To have that happen to me when I was not expecting it, it was just so incredible, and it really set me up to believe more in myself.
youtube
Being a mentor
You are a passionate supporter of local music and have taken part in the Brisbane City Council’s The QUBE Effect, can you tell us a bit about it and your involvement?
It was awesome. I believe I did it in 2019. I met such incredible mentors, and people that I still talk to today. We go to each other’s gigs and whatnot. It built me up a lot. The people that I met helped me in my career. Thanks to the mentorship I got to play Splendour in the Grass in the same year. The tent I played in was packed. It was incredible and it just came from The QUBE Effect.
I fully recommend everyone do it. I now get to be a mentor for it. I just recently emceed this year’s awards night. It is so great to see the new local emerging acts coming out. We got to meet them all. I absolutely love the program and I think it’s incredible.
What advice do you have for any new emerging artists who are looking to break into the music industry?
It is a very tough thing to do. It’s very cliche but just be yourself and be unapologetically and authentically yourself. Don’t go changing for anything or anyone, stay true to yourself and do it for the right reasons. That is some huge advice I’d say. Don’t have the goal of being a super big rockstar superstar kind of thing.
Just do it because you love it. That’s definitely what I was doing. I was just doing it for myself and then all these things came from it. I find that if you focus on getting to no.1 on the charts or anything like that, then it can turn really sour. Just do it for the right reasons and you know as hard as it is just to keep going with it because you love it.

Working with our musicians
In November you performed at the Undertone Festival, in the Gold Coast with Jack River, Montaigne, Tania Doko and more, putting a spotlight on female and non-binary artists. How did it feel being part of that line-up?
I was so excited. It’s such an incredible curation of artists and I couldn’t wait to meet and watch them all play. Also, I was really excited to perform because my band and I haven’t played since May this year.  Also, I love the Miami Marketta so much and I immersed myself in everything that the gig was about.
Your music bio states you are “Brisbane’s brightest queer breakout artist since The Veronicas.” Would you ever collaborate with them?
Absolutely! I grew up watching them and listening to their music. We were actually meant to do a gig with them, but it was cancelled due to Covid. I think it was meant to happen in the beginning of 2023 but anyway it got cancelled. We were so upset about it. We still think about it to this day. But yeah absolutely. It would be a huge full circle for me.
Queer life
What is LGBTQIA+ life like for you, do you immerse yourself in the culture?
Yes, it’s amazing, I love it! I am a huge fan of LGBTQIA+ events. If I ever see anything on, I always make an effort to go to them.
Starting out my career I was advertised as a queer artist, so a lot of queer people came along to the gigs.
Then you meet a lot of fans that turn into friends, and it turned into this amazing community, like a family. It’s super beautiful, and they are so supportive. It never feels competitive.

What does Hope D like doing outside of music?
I love to cook. I love to play around with alcohol infusions. I know that sounds wild.
I also work in a couple of bars in The Valley, and my algorithm on Instagram has been showing me like all these different flavours of gin and tequila you can make.
It sounds super rogue, but I’ve been making blue cheese gin to make dirty martinis. It’s good but it can be offensive and put me off for a while but it’s also interesting. I also love watching horror movies right now because of Halloween and I love going to see live music.
New music
Do you have any upcoming projects you are working on?
I released a new song in November right before the festival gig which is awesome. There is a music video to go with it. After that, I will hopefully release a few more singles next year to be part of an upcoming EP.
youtube
I recorded new music back in January in Perth with Andy Lawson so I’m just so excited to have these songs finally out. It’s been such a long slog of just getting caught up with work. I am really excited to put something new out.

By Amelia Nierenberg and Johanna Lemola
Johanna Lemola reported from Palkane, Finland.
About 150 years ago, Swedish researchers dug up dozens of human skulls and remains from graveyards across Finland and took them to Sweden to study their racial characteristics as part of an effort that they said was to understand how the Nordic region had been populated.
On Sunday, 42 of those skulls were returned and reinterred in Palkane, a small community in Finland about 80 miles northwest of Helsinki, the capital, where residents hailed their homecoming as the righting of a historical wrong.
“They are our own people, even if they lived hundreds of years ago,” Pauliina Pikka, a local official, said in an interview before the ceremony. “They deserve, now, to come back here. They deserve to get rest.”
The skulls were taken in the summer of 1873 by three researchers working for the Karolinska Institute, a medical university in Sweden, who dug up graves in four communities in Finland. They returned to Sweden with human remains from the exhumations and measured and studied them. For decades until 2015, human remains taken by researchers were housed in various Swedish institutions before being returned to Karolinska.
Since then, the university has been researching the origins of some of the remains and repatriating them.
On Sunday, under clear blue skies and balmy temperatures, residents of Palkane gathered to watch the return of the skulls to the church — which has been in ruins for centuries — from which they had been taken in 1873.
As a military band played, the skulls arrived in a horse-drawn carriage driven by people in old-fashioned clothing. Four men carried each coffin before lowering it into a grave. Some community members cast dirt and sand over the graves.
“People feel that they are participating in something meaningful,” said Marketta Pyysalo, the cultural coordinator for Palkane. “This is a handshake with the past.”
Most of the skulls brought back to Palkane were probably buried between the 1500s and the 1800s, said Ulla Moilanen, an archaeologist at the University of Turku. But their identities remain unknown, and she hopes to analyze DNA samples she had taken from the skulls to find out more about them.
“When we find out more about these people, their lives, they really become part of history, not just as skulls, but as human beings,” she said.
Hanna-Liisa Anttila, 90, whose family is from elsewhere in Finland and who came to the ceremony dressed in a national costume, said it was possible the ancestors of her husband, who is from Palkane, might be among the taken skulls.
She said the remains’ removal was a “desecration” of the graves.
The Swedish researchers who exhumed the graves wondered whether Finns were a different race from Swedes, noting that the Finnish language is more closely related to Estonian and Hungarian than Swedish, and believed that an examination of the skulls would answer their questions.
For many people in Finland, those questions about whether they are a different race sounded a lot like an effort to prove that they were an inferior one.
“They kind of wanted to put us down and thought maybe that they could do whatever they like with our skulls and remains,” Ms. Pikka said, “that those people weren’t important.”
Many said the research on the Finnish skulls made them think of eugenics, a discredited scientific theory that was used to justify atrocities including the Holocaust in Nazi Germany, segregation in the United States and the forced sterilization of people in Sweden and Finland and other Nordic nations, and countries including the United States.
“Research developed down this rabbit hole of physical measurements to try to prove the superiority of one race over another,” said Jakob Stougaard-Nielsen, a professor of Scandinavian and comparative literature at University College London.
“It had a huge international following,” added Dr. Stougaard-Nielsen, who chaired a 2021 seminar titled “The Legacy of Eugenics in Scandinavia.”
In 1921, Sweden’s Parliament established the State Institute for Racial Biology, where scientists tried to prove differences among races and track what they saw as the “degeneration” of Sweden’s gene pool. Researchers also performed medical experiments on the Sami, who are indigenous to the region, from the 1920s to the 1950s.
In 2019, the Karolinska Institute apologized “unreservedly” for the 1873 grave exhumations, which were conducted by Gustaf Retzius, a leader in the field of “racial science,” and his colleagues. (An activist group had requested the repatriation a year earlier.)
Today, the institute said, the exhumation methods would be “unethical or illegal.”
“It wasn’t a crime then, because there was no real jurisdiction,” said Maria Josephson, a historian of science and medicine at Karolinska who works on archives and repatriations.
But, she said, “I think they also knew when they did it that they were in the absolute outskirts of what was a reasonable and morally OK thing to do.”
For now, Palkane residents are grateful that their ancestors are, finally, allowed to rest again.
“People are pleased to see their bodies made whole again,” said Jari Kemppainen, the local vicar before the ceremony, “in their home soil and in their home cemetery.”
