matthew lore: childhood friends & teammates
AKA a vaguely chronological list of current NHL players Matthew knew before he ever played an NHL game
This is already a massive list, so in an effort to keep it as short and organized as possible, I have bolded the names of guys who appear in multiple categories and have only included those who have played at least a full season’s worth of games in the NHL.
For a comprehensive list of his teammates that have ever played an NHL game, this invaluable tool will provide you that information dating back to his first season in the NTDP (2013-2014).
CASEY FITZGERALD gets to go first and uncategorized, because he’s known Matthew longer than anyone else on this list, seems to be the cousin he’s closest to, and is one of the three childhood teammates that became one of Matthew’s NHL teammates. (And roommate!)
THE ST. LOUIS BOYS
LUKE KUNIN is THE guy. Their families are friends (Matthew’s whole fam was at Luke’s wedding, Luke’s whole fam was at Brady’s), and they were teammates for fourteen straight seasons before finally getting separated after their time at the NTDP, which is so long Luke's literally known Matthew longer than Taryn has.
Of the six St. Louis guys drafted in 2016, Luke and Matthew were the only ones born in 1997, so the following have all played with Matthew significantly less than Luke.
CCM Motown Classic 2005

TRENT FREDERIC From what I can find, Trent only played with Matthew during the 2005-2006 St. Louis Rockets season, but he played with Brady and was coached by Keith in the same Junior Blues hockey program, was one of the family friends that got to come around and play mini sticks with David Backes as a kid, and his time at the NTDP overlapped with Matthew’s in the 2014-2015 season (Trent U17, Matthew U18).
2010 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament
CLAYTON KELLER played in the 2010 Quebec International Pee-Wee Tournament with Matthew and likely more but trying to find youth hockey rosters from before 2015 is a herculean task. But he was one of those U17 guys that got to play up with the U18s his first year in the NTDP and played with Matthew for 16 games and then went on to win gold together at the U18 Men's World Championship in 2015.
LOGAN BROWN Other than the 2010 tournament, Logan seems to have played more with Brady than he did with Matthew, and wasn’t in the NTDP like the other guys, but does train with them in the summer.
2011-2012 U15 AAA Junior Blues Team

2013 U16 National Tier One tournament champions

JOSEPH WOLL Unlike the other St. Louis boys, Joseph seems to have played exclusively with Brady, but his time at the NTDP overlapped with Matthew’s the same as Trent’s did. It’s unclear if he trains at the same place as the others during the offseason, but along with the rest of the 2016 St. Louis Draftees, his signed draft day photo is framed in Matthew’s bedroom at his parents' house because of course it is.
THE 1997 JUNIOR BRUINS

This Athletic article is about all the NHL players who played for the 1997 Junior Bruins tournament team over the years, but from what I can find, Matthew only played on the 2010 team with Casey Fitzgerald, NOAH HANIFIN, CHARLIE MCAVOY, COLIN WHITE, and the ever present, Luke Kunin.
Matthew is still close friends with all these guys, but Noah in particular is a Noted Best Friend and with him being from Boston and the Tkachuks having a house in Cape Cod, their summers overlap a lot even when they aren’t teammates.
With Casey, he and Colin White are the only childhood teammates to play with Matthew in the NHL.
THE NTDP BOYS
Okay, this section is where it gets a little chaotic so I split it between the guys who played with Matthew and those he went to school and was familiar with because their time at the NTDP overlapped.
2013-2014 NTDP Teammates Including the gold medal teams for the 2014 U17 World Hockey Challenge & the 2015 U18 World Championship
ZACH WERENSKI
Repeat: Noah Hanifin
2013-2015 NTDP Teammates Including the gold medal teams for the 2014 U17 World Hockey Challenge & the 2015 U18 World Championship
JORDAN GREENWAY
CALEB JONES
CHRISTIAN FISCHER spent his youth hockey years playing against Matthew, and when they both headed off to the NTDP, their parents split billet duties. He is one of Matthew’s best friends, attended Matthew’s draft, and even went with Matthew to Brady’s draft.
JACK ROSLOVIC was linemates with Matthew (and Auston) in the 2014-2015 season and when Matthew went to the 2015 Draft to support all his 1996 boys, Jack was the one he chose to sit with. The next summer, Jack returned the favor (see photo with Christian at Matthew's draft above).
AUSTON MATTHEWS is another family friend. He was Matthew’s center in 2014-2015 and when he broke his leg the previous year, Keith got a bunch of NHL guys to reach out to Auston , and he’s the one who gave us the best story about Matthew texting his own highlights to his friends.

Repeats: Luke Kunin, Casey Fitzgerald, Colin White, Charlie McAvoy

2014-2015 NTDP Teammates Including the 2015 U18 World Championship
TAGE THOMPSON
TROY TERRY
Repeat: Clayton Keller: played up 16 games as a U17

Teammates for a handful of games:
TOMMY NOVAK: 2 games for 2013-2014 U17 team
JAKE OETTINGER: 3 games for 2014-2015 U18 Team, and was part of the team but did not PLAY in the 2015 U18 World Championship
MAX JONES: 2 games for 2014-2015 U18 TeamRYAN DONATO played 4 games for 2014-2015 U18 Team and is now part of the extended Tkachuk family due to Emma, Brady’s wife, being his cousin.
NTDP Overlaps
2013-2014 U18s:
JACK EICHEL
ALEX TUCH
DYLAN LARKIN
2014-2015 U17s:
JOEY ANDERSON
ADAM FOX
RYAN LINDGREN
KAILER YAMAMOTO
repeats: Max Jones, Clayton Keller, Joseph Woll, Trent Frederic, Jake Oettinger

2015-2016 LONDON KNIGHTS
ROBERT THOMAS is practically a third Tkachuk brother at this point. But before Robbie lived with the Tkachuks, his own parents opened their home to Matthew while he trained at Gary Roberts’ the summer of his draft. Then when Robbie’s rookie season came along, it was Matthew who then suggested Robbie live with his parents too.

MITCH MARNER
EVAN BOUCHARD
VICTOR METE
Repeats: Max Jones, Christian Dvorak

2016 WORLD JUNIORS (bronze medal team)
NICK SCHMALTZ
BRANDON CARLO
BROCK BOESER
WILL BORGEN
ALEX DEBRINCAT
ANDERS BJORK
ALEX NEDELJKOVIC
SONNY MILANO
Repeats: Auston Matthews, Zach Werenski, Christian Dvorak, Colin White, Ryan Donato, Charlie McAvoy
HONORABLE MENTIONS
None of the Hughes brothers played with or overlapped with Matthew in the NTDP, but the two families are friends, and as far as I can tell, first met in 2010 when Quinn played on Brady’s Junior Bruins tournament team.
QUINN HUGHES is Brady’s best friend from billeting with him and Keith while in the NTDP and is on this list because Jack called Brady and Matthew QUINN’S BOYS, their families are friends and met at the latest, in 2010 when Quinn played on Brady's Junior Bruins tournament team. On top of that, Quinn he once included Matthew in his answer about watching Chris Tanev play after he got traded to the Flames for no reason at all other than to say he likes to watch him play too.

And last, but certainly not least, is CONNOR MCDAVID.
Matthew spent multiple summers, including the summer before his rookie season, training with Connor at Gary Roberts’ and the two of them are what I like to call STAR CROSSED TEAMMATES. Not only does Matthew swear the Oilers almost drafted him—and there’s certainly enough reports and predictions from before his draft to back up that being the plan—but Connor could’ve been a 1997 Junior Bruin if Brain McDavid wasn’t out to get me.

Matthew Tkachuk thought he was going to be drafted by the Oilers in 2016 (Cam Lewis, 2020)

On Saturday, Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk appeared on TSN’s OverDrive show to discuss, among other things, the Battle of Alberta. According to Tkachuk, he believed at the draft that he was going to end up on the other side of this battle.
Here’s the story in Tkachuk’s words…
During the draft, on the draft floor, it was kind of a weird moment where some people at the Edmonton table, you could ask them they would probably deny it, but they’re kind of staring me down and kind of giving me some smiles. The only people that saw it were me and my mom so we’re like ‘alright, we’re going to Edmonton.’ Then Pierre-Luc Dubois went third-overall and the phone started to ring like crazy at the Edmonton table and they threw the jersey under the table and it looked like they stripped off a name and gave it to Puljujarvi with the next pick.
Tkachuk’s memory certainly doesn’t seem far-fetched at all.
Coming into the 2016 draft, there seemed to be a very clear top three. Auston Matthews would be the first-overall pick as the Leafs wanted their franchise centre and the two Finns, Patrik Laine and Jesse Puljujarvi, who had been brilliant at the World Juniors, would go second and third.
After that, it was up in the air. But Tkachuk, fresh off of a 107-point season with the London Knights, seemed to be the leader of that everyone else pack after the big three. I remember a mock draft coming out days before the draft suggesting Tkachuk would be Edmonton’s guy at four.

So, as planned, the Leafs took Matthews with the first pick and Winnipeg grabbed Laine right after. Then, it was the Blue Jackets’ turn to pick. When Jarmo Kekalainen went up to the podium and called Dubois’ name, there was an audible gasp in the arena.
youtube
The Oilers then took their chance to pounce on Puljujarvi, Tkachuk would slide past Vancouver and end up as a member of the Flames, and the rest is history.
It’s interesting to think what would have happened if Kekalainen had just made the predictable move and gone with Puljujarvi with the third pick. Would Tkachuk had become an Oiler? Would be a beloved pest here rather than our most hated rival? Would Puljujarvi had blossomed elsewhere?
You really can’t fault Edmonton for going with Puljujarvi when he fell into their lap with the fourth pick. He had just put up one of the best World Junior performances of all-time, scoring 17 points in seven games en route to a gold medal victory, and looked like he was going to be a star. But the fact that a Finnish general manager passed him over did seem a little ominous.

FNAF SPOILERS! SCROLL! TALKING ABOUT THE SPRINGLOCK SCENE!
i’ve seen so many people discussing the springlock scene in both negative and positive ways and i think it brings up really cool points about how matthew played that scene and balanced fan expectations with his own characterisation.
i think the discussions around this movie have rlly exposed the disconnect between fanon and canon in fnaf, especially talking abt the core games in isolation, bc frankly in the game universe (ignoring the books) we get Very Little characterisation for William other than the obvious, but Matthew managed to add so much in the way he talks and his body language.
in the reveal scene, we see afton at arguably his peak. in his first scene, he comes off as somewhat demeaning and judgemental until he recognises mike’s name, at which point he seems to have this nervous energy, rushing to cover it up but stumbling slightly, his reaction to the tables being turned even slightly is massive.
this is a man who committed multiple mrdrs in essentially broad daylight, hid the bodies in the most obvious place, and still got away with it, and then kept the crime scene as a trophy of his actions, and an ongoing prison sentence for his victims. he has been in complete control for decades, and is confident that he can deal with any kind of threat quickly. his confidence in his reveal is palpable
it changes when vanessa shoots him. the whole parallel with vanessa and the animatronics is hugely interesting too- how william refers to the animatronics almost endearingly as “kids” when he wants them to obey, how both vanny and the animatronics have an unearned loyalty to him, almost a pseudo-adoption through what he did to them, taking them from their parents and keeping them under his thumb, forever stuck as naive, forgiving, obedient children. vanessa breaking from that control shakes him, but the mask slips back into place almost immediately.
then, he’s outsmarted by the brother of one of his victims, and the child he planned to end next. his pseudo-children turn on him and he can no longer manipulate his appearance or shed his skin to escape. he explodes on them, and his language is incredibly telling that he is being dishonest.
he calls them small, trying to belittle them into submission, even though they are ten feet tall metal animatronics powered by rage. he is grasping at straws to regain control, and failing miserably.
finally, the springlocks go off. the locks in the movie look more like a ribcage, so the first two likely puncture his lungs. they’re slow, and painful, but he doesn’t scream or beg or sob. he grunts and groans, gritting his teeth and only letting out sounds of pain that sound almost involuntary. there is no way in hell he would visibly let himself show weakness or pain in front of these creatures that he believes he has control over. he isn’t brought to his knees until there are eight metal spikes embedded in his abdomen. he doesn’t let the mask fall for even a second, until he literally PUTS THE ACTUAL MASK ON and finally collapses. even then, he’s fighting for consciousness, twitching and writhing with no control over his body. william afton thrives on control, and his soul will not rest until he gets it back.
it’s why he keeps the pizzeria- he always comes back. he can’t help but return to the scene of the crime, putting on his old costume, continuing his killings. he revels in being a constant threat on the horizon. and now, he knows he is going to die, and he knows the suit will bring him back, and noone will be able to get rid of him then. so he puts the mask back on, and waits.
in terms of the sfx- they’re pretty accurate. with stab wounds, you need to leave the knife in the wound as long as possible for best chance of survival, as it stops the blood from escaping. in terms of the springlocks, there wouldn’t be copious amounts of blood as the locks are keeping the wounds filled- which is good because it means a slower, more painful death.
#fnaf#fnaf movie#eden rambles#william afton#matthew lillard#springtrap#five nights at freddy's#fnaf spoilers#idk i thought it was a great scene#ppl just need to manage their expectations of what fnaf 1 Actually Is in isolation#not the years of other media and fandom and lore and theory#we literally saw him get springlocked one time in 8 bit with no audio and four frames. how is this worse in comparison#wanna make another post talking abt how the film explores images vs the reality when you look deeper#specifically abby and her drawings/the drawings at freddys vs mike’s motivation being based on the images he sees in his dreams#and how it’s so perfect for fnaf 1 being a game almost entirely made of just scary images without actually exploring the reality#that these robots are Children and Scared and Lost#tldr the fort scene was necessary

since it's a rather prevalent belief that keith pretty much only criticizes matthew in the press, here are some of the good things keith's said all throughout matthew's career that people seem to be unaware of because it's rarely posted:
“It was great. He’s such a great kid. He works hard and he loves the game of hockey,” Dad said after his son’s five-point performance.
June 2012
“He’s more skilled than I was,” Keith says. “These kids do stuff at a young age I couldn’t do as a pro. We’re happy with the decision (to play in London). I just wish I got a chance to see him more.”
January 2016
“He always likes to talk about it,” Keith said. “It’s funny when he doesn’t play well, he doesn’t like to call you. Knowing the game and knowing I probably had more bad games than he’ll ever have, I understand that part of the game. He’s trying to learn on his own, but he still loves to call and talk about the game and situations, so that’s pretty neat for me.”
December 2016
"He takes chances to make plays and can make those plays in tight spaces. His hockey sense, he had that from an early age. And he's always had that confidence. He's approaching things like a 28-year-old."
January 2017
“He watches hockey 24-7. He knows every player in the league. He wants to figure out every player in the league. He wants to know their tendencies. He’s a student of the game. That’s what I love about him.”
February 2018
“These boys deserve all the credit. They did all the work. It’s fun to see them have success,” he said. “It’s nice to be drafted high. But it’s what you do after that makes it count.”
June 2018
“I’m embarrassed to say this, but he probably knows a lot more than me right now when it comes to all that,” said Keith. “He’s a history buff. It’s unbelievable how much he knows. He just has that gift where he’s a hockey guy and the only thing that matters to him is hockey. He knows everything, I’m telling you. Plays. Players. Coaches. Drafts. Everything."
January 2019
“[Matthew’s] very mature beyond his years and that environment of being there will give him a leg up of not being nervous,” said Keith. “Whether he does some of the events or just being in the locker room with superstars, he’ll be fine. He’ll adjust pretty quickly. I think it showed the way they came into the league, the environment they were always put in. They’re not timid, yet they’re respectful in those instances.”
January 2020
“I’m proud of Matthew, he’s done a great job,” said Keith. "He’s showing his maturity. It’s fun to watch and right now him and his linemates have it going."
April 2022
"[Matthew] is the most generous kid I have ever met, what he did down in Florida (for the family all-star weekend) was incredible, everything, he took care of everything."
March 2023
#this is just stuff i had in my bookmarks#there's certainly more i'm far too lazy to spend anymore time digging up right now#matthew tkachuk#keith tkachuk#matthew lore

I can't remember where I saw it, I think it was Clayface from Batman, but I distinctly remember seeing a show where a person was drowned with clay/mud/dough. It was shoved down their throat in a torrent and the choking sounds they made were awful. They didn't do anything over the top like explode they just... drowned. Horribly.
Now picture Doey killing a prison guard like that
(not really a question sorry, more an examination of how strong and ruthless Doey can be)
Wonderful, absolutely wonderful stuff (genuine!!!) That definitely sounds like Clayface, he was ruthless in the animated shows. Everyone on here is so lucky I am incapable of drawing things that are genuinely scary or threatening or intimidating (trust me TwT I’ve tried) because the angst I could draw OOOGH just imagining it

When Doey goes on that killing spree after Bella and Lucas die it is ruthless, genuinely ruthless. He is desperate to feel in control, to feel powerful, and to make these people cower and be scared in the way he has both felt and seen his friends feel. Violent thoughts and dreams are normal for everyone, but they lived in an environment of violence which used violence to keep people in line, the killing barely even feels real as he is doing it.
It doesn’t make him feel better, he can’t even hold the remains of his friends without sullying them with blood. In the time he spent rampaging the lower levels have been properly locked down (these measures break down pretty quickly with no one to maintain them, but it is the reason Doey never made a run for it before Safe Haven was established) and he entirely squandered any chance to escape. He couldn’t even live for his friends who died because he was too busy crushing everything in sight. He didn’t try and keep doors open for toys to escape out of, didn’t help other smaller toys who were suffering the same fate as Bella and Lucas during the chaos, didn’t even consider the kids just a level up, the ones who hadn’t been hurt like they he had.

hurting myself thinking about how lottie in the psych ward in switzerland was convinced that everything that happened was inside her head, that it wasn't real and that she was the one who was sick.

victim blamed and gaslit to the point of new delusions and beliefs through drugs and shock therapy that turned those memories more harmful in her mind. that this was just her fault, this was all not real, it was just something she was so intensely believing and none of what happened, happened. those beliefs are further validated by the isolation she went through for all those years without seeing anyone. what she went through was more psychological trauma that altered existing trauma — you can repress, you can alter, but deep down in your mind you can never truly forget what happened.
so, what happens to everything in her mind as she starts to believe the narrative forced upon her in this enclosed space by the doctors and nurses...
what happens to the haunting figure of laura lee inside her head, that quite literally follows her wherever she goes? what happened to the vision of laura lee who is what her guilt and longing deep inside her mind created to protect her/warn her in these intense moments (from her death vision; to travis's death)? what happened to the memories of laura lee who can still be found deeply in everything that lottie does..
what if she hallucinated laura lee being the person that would visit her when no one else would? after all laura lee was the first person that lottie felt truly saw her and believed in her, that helped lottie try to find who she is, giving her a voice within the group. she was there during lottie's near death, she was there during all of lottie's vulnerable moments through the dress that she wore. the dress that lottie continues to rub against her fingers to calm herself down, as before she met laura lee that nervous habit of hers she only had herself to cling onto.
there could be a transition from the delusion of laura lee in the psych ward, just leaving lottie there like everyone else, promising to come back to the moment as the "treatment" finally takes over and lottie starts to believe what happened to her was not real. lottie battling her mind, nothing happened to laura lee, she's not here anymore, she just died in an unfortunate accident that had nothing to do with this wilderness delusion, she just couldn't survive. she is not coming back.
then when lottie is finally re-triggered years later by the travis situation where she starts to believe what happened was in fact all real...
laura lee who has been following her and promised to come back to see her, has finally caught up with her...
but, she has rotten. frozen in what she looked like at the lake, not at her death, but at the true moment of when lottie's guilt and delusions within the wilderness started. she is the embodiment of everything lottie has forgotten and locked away in what happened out there, that scream unleashes in the wilderness memories back into her mind. everything that happened to lottie out there with who she became did start with laura lee, it could have stopped with laura lee in her mind back in the psych ward, but once again start with laura lee back at travis's death...
#yellowjackets#lottielee#me just rambling about lottielee to feed myself because the writers won't#lottie matthews#laura lee#ugh I need more post-rescue lore already! ahhhhh!
