Heyy, can you please do Jack helping the UD kids bc he feels bad for “leaving” Hannah and Beth for dead
In all honesty, the kid had been flapping his gums for so long, it didn't occur to him to question the sudden quiet; out there, out in the thick of it, with the snow falling around their ears and every shriek of the wind sounding a little too much like the call of some hungry beast, silence was second only to stillness. So when he finally did open his mouth again, the awkward, gangling fool, Jack's first thought was colored by frustration - a mistake, as it turned out.
"Why're you even doing this, man?"
He didn't answer, not outright, instead giving a low grunt as he scanned the treetops for any sign of movement, any flicker of teeth or talons or toughened leather pulled far, far too tight over bones.
The kid was breathing hard by then, unused to the labor of trekking through a fresh fall, and as he explained, "Helping us...if this is...so...dangerous...why not just...leave us?" he was huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf come to town.
And that was when he felt the trap snap shut, the snare tighten, because it was a question he'd been asking himself all night and an answer he'd been dancing around for just as long; "Tired of cleaning up the messes you idiots leave," he lied, and that got the kid to stop talking all right, but it didn't do a thing for the memory of that girl clinging onto his hand for dear life, her fingers slipping slowly (slowly) out of his.

Does it bother anyone else that soprano musical theatre "I want" songs cannot seem to pass the Bechtel test for the life of them?

I remember when I was a little kid, Castle on a Cloud was on some Broadway medley we had, and I'd listen to it and relate to it and think "god, I wish I had my own castle on a cloud where nobody shouts and it's never too loud and there's someone there who holds and loves me..." it's such a haunting melody, and yet it only occurs once in a musical that has so many recurring musical themes

Whumperless whump event: “It's just a nightmare. You're safe.”
Free Birds and Fiddlers
Cw: discussions of noncon drugging, of noncon/dubcon sexual violence, of nudity and torture. Implied whumpee turned whumper.
~~~
Kevin knocked on the door softly before letting himself in anyway. Julian had said his door was always open to Kevin, and lately he's had to take advantage of that promise more than he'd like.
The room was dark, but even so Kevin knew where the small table and chairs were, and the small lantern which provided just enough glow to see by.
Julian stirred. "Mmh, Kevin? What is it?"
"Sorry for waking you. I couldn't sleep, and I hoped you would be still awake too. But it can wait until morning."
"It's alright. Just give me a second to wake up."
Kevin curled up on the chair, and ran his hand through his hair a few times. Once Julian had a decency of clothes on, he turned the lamp on his desk on, casting the room into what could actually be called light.
With a pitcher of water and a pair of cups in hand, Julian sat down across from Kevin. With a voice even lower with sleep than it normally was, he asked, "What's wrong, Kev?"
Kevin ran a hand through his hair once more. "I couldn't sleep. Nightmare."
"Mhm. Do you want to talk about it, or are you here for a distraction?"
"Talk about it, I think."
One of the cups, now full, was slid across the table into Kevin's slightly shaking hands. He didn't realize how dry his mouth was until he took a sip.
"What happened?"
Kevin started slowly. "It was about John. Or at least, that's the part that's still bothering me. It started like one I've had before, you know, where I'm on my back in the sand at the base of the wall, and I can't even breathe for the pain. This one started as that one. But, it morphed before the part where I get helped up."
Kevin was breathing hard as he continued. "I was still on my back, but in a bed now. I- it was John's. When he knocked me out. He already had me pinned, my side burned like it was an actual knife instead of that fucking needle. I couldn't fight him off-"
He had trouble fighting off tears in the present as well, and bit his knuckles in the effort.
"I couldn't fight him and then I couldn't fight at all. I felt frozen in my body. But I could still feel it, in the dream. I could still feel his hands, the weight. I could feel his mouth- an- and I couldn't stop it. I couldn't even yell at him I just had to take it. It felt so real."
Julian was silent for a moment. "Do you think he touched you like that after you went unconscious?"
"I don't know. He says- he swears he didn't, that he got the others as soon as I was out but- it's not like I can trust his word now."
"Have you had this specific dream before?"
Kevin shook his head. "No. I told you about the ones from the actual interrogation. I've been getting those a lot. But those are all memories, accurate as far as I can tell. But this- is my subconscious trying to tell me what happened?"
"Kev, it's possible that he touched you like that, but it's also possible that it was just a nightmare. People get exaggerated nightmare scenarios all the time. And with no proof of what happened specifically, you have to decide what you trust more."
"A liar and traitor verses my own traumatized nightmare. Grand."
"I suppose the more important question is what do you want to do about this?"
Kevin put his elbows on the table and palms to his eyes, as if blocking out sight would help him think. "I don't know. If that part really was just a nightmare I can't just punish him more for it. It wouldn't be fair to retaliate for crimes that only happened in my head. But it felt real. If- if he did touch me like that-
"I already consider what happened that night to be rape. But until now I just thought it went to the deception and no further. I didn't really entertain the idea that he might have kept going-"
That wasn't entirely true. He had entertained the idea for a moment when he woke up in the dungeon without the last article of clothing he had before being knocked out. He had thought about it enough since then to pursue that line of questioning briefly once John was captured and being the one interrogated by the enemy faction.
And each time, he pushed those thoughts away. He didn't want to believe them. He wanted to believe John told the truth that it went as far as the orders he was given and no further. But he just didn't know that for sure.
"You don't have to decide anything right now. I can talk to him if you'd like. You can't change that it happened if it did, but would a confession from him help? To know for sure at least?"
Kevin nodded, tearily. "I think so? I don't know."
"And that's ok. You don't have to know right now. All that matters is that the nightmare's over, you're safe."
Theatre nerds need a resort of our own. A musical resort- Maybe Broadway Land or Musical Mania? A place where all musicals can be referenced, there are small shows being performed in the streets, people dressed as iconic musical characters, a Broadway museum- please give us this!
I’m pretty sure she’s tightening her bow, actually — with the natural curve of the bridge, it’s already possible to set the bow on two strings (or even three!) simultaneously. A loose bow would only muddy the sound/make it harder to project, and when you’re up against the tension of very tight strings it actually helps more to have stiffer bow hair to give you something to actually press into. As a classical musician I’d do the exact same thing if I was playing on a lot of strings at once: a tighter bow makes for a clearer sound on double stops and chords, and I see a lot of fiddlers playing with what looks to me like a reckless amount of bow tension, though it’s not really unusual. If you watch someone playing Shostakovich you’ll see the same thing (which is part of why playing Shostakovich will shred your bow hair into a million pieces. I had to straight up get my bow rehaired after I played one of his quartets.)
The “fiddle sound” that this musician is using specifically seems to take advantage of a lot of double stops (playing on two strings), pronounced rhythms, and ornamentation, which are both pretty typical in the context of fiddle and bluegrass. Honestly I would be really interested to hear a take that includes other features of fiddle music, like improvisation or melodic alterations! And I would LOVE to hear someone apply the same stylistic techniques to Tartini, or another virtuosic piece like it. Tartini especially uses so many double stops already that I imagine the differences would have to lie more in improvisation and rhythmic emphasis.
i've noticed that there is a bit of ingrained antisemitism in some non-jewish fiddler on the roof fans and im not gonna lie it really rubs me the wrong way. like they probably don't even know they're being kinda antisemitic in this way
here's what i mean. fiddler on the roof is about (shocker) jewish tradition and change. when you see tevye who cannot accept his daughter for marrying a non-jew, do you think, "oh, he's set in his ways, he's bigoted, he's just not modern enough, his (jewish) tradition is making him blind." ? whereas every time someone in my family would see it for the first time, literally everyone said, "it's a shame, but i absolutely understand why."
i think that's the most important thing -- do you understand why a man like tevye, a jewish man whose judaism is incredibly important to him, a jewish man who lives in the pale of settlement and whose village is under constant threat of pogroms, a jewish man who is alive in this period literally 2 years after the infamous kishinev pogroms (assuming this story takes place in 1905), a jewish man whose ancestors were constantly persecuted for being jewish (ESPECIALLY in the pale), a jewish man who is so remarkably proud to be jewish despite all of this --- do you understand why this man might be rightfully upset at his daughter for breaking the tradition that he and his people have paid with their lives to keep?
you can disagree with tevye's decision all you want -- i do too -- but like. if you don't see this you need to check yourself. fiddler on the roof is not just about the breaking of tradition -- it's about the breaking of tradition that is been their only method of survival for generations because they are Jews.
