One thing that always felt weird about the vanilla game is this expectation of Miquella "returning" which is a pretty heavy assumption all things considered. Why do they think that he even has the ability to return. Why would they assume that? If Miquella, with the physicality of a child and eligibility of godhood, vanished during this ongoing demigod power struggle, why wouldn't Malenia, or his countless devoted followers, be out there looking for him? Instead, they are all just... waiting.

Of course, there are different ways we interpreted it. More or less, it comes across through a lens of "The poor Haligtree people don't know he is captured against his will and he can't come back even though he wants to. All they can do is protect his tree. How tragic!"

But with the reveal of SOTE, it makes a lot more sense why they would assume he would return: because they knew he was leaving and he promised he would return... as a god!

Now, its tragic in different way. All these people have this faith in Miquella and his plan but it is destined to fail because that plan gets in the way of our own Elden Lordship.

Visiting the Haligtree after beating the DLC really hits different because now he really, really won't be returning. And it's all our fault.
