Exploring non-wood cellulose fibers for sustainable textiles
In a world increasingly aware of environmental footprints, the textile industry stands at a crossroads, tasked with the challenge of sustainability. A recent study by a team of researchers at North Carolina State University offers a promising direction with their work on non-wood cellulose-based textiles. The study is published in the Journal of Bioresources and Bioproducts. Led by Ryen M. Frazier and Ronalds Gonzalez, the study explores the feasibility and potential of non-wood feedstocks for producing man-made cellulosic fibers (MMCFs), a sector traditionally dominated by wood-derived pulp. The research comes against a backdrop of escalating environmental concerns related to synthetic fibers like polyester, which currently accounts for over half of the fashion industry's market share. The study underscores the urgency of finding sustainable alternatives. As global textile production continues to rise, so does the demand for resources and the resulting environmental impact. The researchers highlight the potential of non-wood sources such as agricultural residues and dedicated fiber crops, which could offer a viable and eco-friendly alternative.

Birla Cellulose and Circ announce strategic partnership to accelerate scaling textile recycling innovation
Birla Cellulose, the cellulosic fibres business of the Aditya Birla Group and one of the world’s leading Man-Made Cellulosic Fibre (MMCF) producers through its flagship company Grasim Industries Limited, and Circ, a US-based textile-to-textile recycling innovator, have announced a long-term strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the scaling of recycling fibres within the textiles sector.
This groundbreaking collaboration proposes, for Birla Cellulose to purchase up-to 5,000 tons of Circ’s pulp, per year, for a period of 5 years from Circ’s first commercial-scale facility. This pulp will be converted into lyocell staple fibre, significantly enhancing access to recycled materials and supporting Circ as it scales its commercial production.
“Our partnership with Birla Cellulose, a leading global producer of MMCFs, is significant as it demonstrates both Circ’s ongoing progress towards scalability as well as the industry’s commitment to investing in a truly circular economy,” said Peter Majeranowski, CEO of Circ. “Together, we are poised to create a more sustainable fashion future by integrating recycled materials into textiles on the global stage.”
Dr. Aspi Patel, Chief Technology Officer of Grasim Industries Limited, said, “This partnership reflects our deep commitment to environmental stewardship and represents a crucial step in advancing innovation within the textile industry. By combining Circ’s cutting-edge recycling technology with our cellulosic fibres, we are significantly enhancing the potential for a truly circular economy.”
As brands and consumers increasingly prioritize eco-friendly options, the supply chain will play a pivotal role in facilitating demand. The partnership between Birla Cellulose and Circ demonstrates the role of collaboration in effectively scaling recycling initiatives. With the appetite for recycled materials outpacing the current supply, Birla Cellulose’s willingness to procure and utilize Circ pulp ensures Birla Cellulose’s customers have access to high-quality recycled Circ Lyocell. This partnership enables brands and supply chain partners can partake and play their part in the future of the global fashion industry.
Both companies are committed to promoting circular economy practices and reducing environmental impact through innovative technology and material reuse. They are also aligned on their shared vision for a sustainable future with a promise to set new benchmarks in the textile industry.

🌙 A sneak preview for prompt A44! 🌙

“No offence,” Remus mutters over a cup of tea. (Because yes, he invited the attractive ministry official into his house and gave him tea and listened to him do his little sales pitch—Remus is no monster, at least not when it comes to manners) “But I’ve been handling this by myself long enough to know what I’m doing.”
“For thirty five years, right?” Sirius pipes, the same oblivious smile on his face like this is all just some sales call.
Remus levels his gaze across the table. “Yes,” he mutters through pursed lips, “So I didn’t need some ministry lackey trying to give me advice.”
“Oh I’m not Ministry-”
“St. Mungo’s then.”
“Technically not St. Mungo’s either.”
Remus scowls at him. “So you have access to my medical records, how then?”
“Well,” Sirius starts, gearing back into his pre-prepared speech. “I work for a third party Healers guild that collaborates with St. Mungo’s to provide home-care for those who may be unable to attend appointments in person. They provide us with the details of patients they deem more vulnerable.”
It doesn't seem much to ask that St. Mungo's not just throw around personal information about his condition to any Tom, Dick or Harry, but that is the part of price of being on the registry—he doesn’t get thrown in Azkaban for simply existing, but any fucker and their cat can access the information if they make a convincing enough argument.
Remus drags his hands down his face. “So you’re a care worker? For old people and werewolves?”
“Healer,” Sirius corrects. “And there are all sorts of reasons people might need a home-visit. Disability, curses, lack of transportation. You would be my lycanthropic patient.”
“You can say werewolf, it’s not a dirty word.”
Sirius blinks at him. “Right, um, well the werewolf-ness is the reason you’ve been flagged.”
“And the Ministry has suddenly started pumping funding to welfare programmes because of a change of heart?”
“Not all werewolves.”
“And what makes me so special?”
“You’re old,” Sirius says bluntly.
Remus raises an eyebrow. “Real charmer aren't you.”
“No, I mean, you’ve been on the registry so long. I honestly didn’t think it was possible to survive that long. No offence I mean the toil it must have on your body-.”
Remus gives him a wry smile. “We survive longer the more removed we are from the ministry.”
Sirius’ brows furrow as Remus watches the cogs turn in his head, trying to make sense of the fact. “Is that true?”
“We do better in packs," Remus says with a shrug, taking another sip of his tea. "And forming packs is technically illegal if you're registered.”
“Well that doesn’t seem fair.”
Remus lets out a sharp laugh. “Welcome to the Werewolf Civil Rights Movement.”

Biodiversity: The next frontier in sustainable fashion
Even in the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic, consumers, investors, and regulators are focused on sustainability—in fact, involvement in sustainability has increased during the crisis. For example, two-thirds of garment buyers think reducing their influence on climate change is now more important to them than it was before COVID-19.1. However, while much has been written about the fashion industry's influence on climate change, the industry's enormous footprint on biodiversity is less generally understood and reported. Biodiversity, broadly defined as the diversity of all living forms on Earth, is important. We rely on it for food and energy, as well as its indispensible function in maintaining air quality, supplying fresh water and soil, and regulating temperature. Despite this, biodiversity is losing at a greater rate than at any other time in human history. One million species, or between 12% and 20% of the estimated total species, are on the verge of extinction, both marine and terrestrial. The garment sector contributes significantly to biodiversity loss. Apparel supply chains are inextricably tied to soil degradation, natural ecosystem conversion, and river contamination. For some years, garment firms have been involved in the battle against climate change, introducing a slew of carbon-neutral programmes. Biodiversity is a separate but connected concern. Climate change and biodiversity loss are linked and mutually reinforcing—one drives the other, and vice versa. Protecting forests, for example, might help cut greenhouse-gas emissions. As a result, rising global temperatures raise the danger of species extinction. Because biodiversity is a complex and multidimensional environment, and ecosystem degradation affects seas, rivers, soil, and forests, numerous metrics and indicators are required to assess effect and progress. Setting objectives and holding people accountable for such a broad variety of issues is far more difficult than managing for a single statistic like greenhouse gas emissions. We have a strong grasp of how each section of the garment value chain impacts biodiversity because to our examination of quantitative impact indicators and conversations with industry experts. The majority of the negative effect is attributed to three stages of the value chain: raw-material manufacturing, material preparation and processing, and end-of-life (Exhibit 1).
Cotton agriculture. Cotton is the most used nonsynthetic fiber in the world. Farming it is especially insecticide and pesticide intensive: although cotton grows on only 2.4 percent of global cropland, it accounts for 22.5 percent of the world’s insecticide use—more than any other single crop—and 10 percent of all pesticide use. Cotton is also a water-intensive crop; some estimates suggest that 713 gallons (2,700 liters) of water are needed to produce one T-shirt.3
Wood-based natural fibers/man-made cellulose fibers (MMCFs). MMCFs are created from cellulose, mainly derived from wood. According to estimates, more than 150 million trees are logged annually for MMCFs.4 While the majority of MMCFs come from tree plantations that are certified and sustainable, up to 30 percent of MMCFs may come from endangered and primary forests. Furthermore, water and soil pollution from chemicals used in plantation forests and during pulp processing drive habitat loss and endanger species, unless the process is 100 percent closed loop.
Textile dyeing and treatment. Approximately 25 percent of industrial water pollution comes from textile dyeing and treatment. These processes overexploit freshwater resources and contaminate waterways through chemical runoff and nonbiodegradable liquid waste. Of the 1,900 chemicals used in clothing production, the European Union classifies 165 as hazardous to the health or the environment.6
Microplastics. An average of 700,000 fibers is released in a standard laundry load,7 and half a million tons of microfibers (which are a type of microplastic) end up in oceans every year.8 An estimated 35 percent of primary microplastics in the world’s oceans originate from the washing of synthetic textiles.9 Toxic chemicals in synthetic microfibers poison marine wildlife.
Waste. Only 12 percent of textile waste is downcycled (broken down into its component materials), and less than one percent is closed loop recycled. Nearly three-fourths—73 percent—of textile waste is incinerated or ends up in landfills, which release pollutants into their surroundings and contribute to habitat loss.1Anywhere from 30 to 300 species per hectare may be lost during the development of just one landfill site.

Renewcell’s CIRCULOSE supplier network increases to 151 partners with a focus on regional hubs

Renewcell, the Swedish textile-to-textile recycler, welcomes 35 new members to the CIRCULOSE Supplier Network (CSN), now totaling 151 spinners, weavers, textile mills, garment manufacturers, and more. The newest cohort consists of suppliers with vertical operations (10), yarn spinners (16), garment manufacturers (4) as well as denim and home textile mills. First launched in July 2023 with 47 textile producers, the expansion to 151 in under one year underlines the spirit of collaboration and the desire to close the loop on clothing production.
Srimal Wickremasinghe, Managing Director, Brushes & Needlescomments, “Brushes & Needles from Sri Lanka and TexComs from Indonesia have been diligently working on developing an innovative and sustainable textile solution cooperating with CIRCULOSE technology that we believe will revolutionize the industry. In today's rapidly changing world, the demand for eco-friendly and sustainable products is higher than ever before.” Salil Dhillon, Director, TexComs Worldwide continues, "Consumers are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their purchases and are seeking out products that align with their values. Recognizing this shift in consumer behavior, we have invested significant time and resources into creating textile products with CIRCULOSE® that not only meet the highest standards of quality and performance but also prioritize sustainability throughout their entire lifecycle.”
Tricia Carey, Chief Commercial Officer at Renewcell, comments on the new partners, "Our goal was to build up key geographical regions that could service the varied requirements of our current and future brand partners. Being able to offer vertical or location-specific end-to-end manufacturing is significant for our continuous development.”
As the only industrial-scale producer of pulp made from 100% recycled textiles, Renewcell’s strategy
is to replace virgin manmade cellulosic fibers (MMCF) with fibers made with CIRCULOSE as well as offer a replacement for cotton, and to enhance the properties of mechanically recycled cotton. With Turkey’s large cotton textile market and growing cotton recycling industry, expanding mill partnerships in this country was a prime focus.
“Sustainability finds life deep within our fabric, like the branches of a tree,” states Özge Arpaz, Sales & Marketing Manager of Palmiye, based in Turkey. “We are open to every new project that has benefits for innovation, sustainability, and nature, and we are proud to make all our investments in this direction. Fibers made with CIRCULOSE are the most important topic in the future world where resources are scarce.”
The mills and producers in the CIRCULOSE Supplier Network are the building blocks of a circular system. As Karla Magruder, Founder and President of the non-profit Accelerating Circularity, explains, “At Accelerating Circularity, we're convinced that building circular systems is essential to make the transition to circularity. Every step in the system needs to do its part. To scale textile-to-textile recycling the market needs systems in place and commercial. Renewcell's CIRCULOSE Supplier Network is the first example of putting together all the pieces through commercial entities. The ability to find and purchase yarns, knits and/or wovens at a variety of suppliers in a wide variety of geographic regions makes it possible for the next step, brands to do their part in building circular systems.”
With the growth of the CIRCULOSE Supplier Network to 151 members and the adoption of CIRCULOSE throughout the value chain, economies of scale can be achieved. Fibers, yarns, and fabrics made with CIRCULOSE are available now for fashion and home brands, both large and small.
The list of the newest CIRCULOSE Supplier Network members is below:
