Echoes from the Past - Chapter 3

Apologies for the long delay in posting this chapter, but the holidays and end of year work stuff was such a huge time drain. Hope the wait was worth it! If you've missed the earlier chapters you can find chapter one here

Chapter Three

David Cartwright woke early, blinking and attempting to bring the dim room into focus. He reached over to his left to grab his glasses off the nightstand. Finally, after putting them on things came into view. His heart sank. This wasn’t home. Yes, there was a wardrobe of his things and his favourite slippers were on the floor next to this bed, but this was an institution. A place to tuck away a problem you didn’t want to deal with anymore. Sighing, he reached for the picture frame on the night table. It was of him and River taken a few years ago almost around the time he began his training for MI-5. Rose would’ve been proud, but concerned. She always chided David for training River since he was a boy, but he couldn’t help it. They boy was sharp and was good at being stealthy, all qualities he’d need to be successful.

Smiling, David thought back to around the time River’s tenth birthday. While he couldn’t remember a damn thing from yesterday, he still remembered things like this so vividly. How the day was unseasonably warm for late April and how bright the sun shone on their walk to the village to pick up some things for Rose and the cake she was baking especially for River’s birthday in a couple of days.

“So young man, you’re going to hit double digits soon. Excited?”

River nodded and smiled. “Yeah, it’s so cool. Next thing you know I’ll be old enough to drive!”

“Ha! That’s not for a while, my boy. Though if you get a good grade on that maths test this week maybe I’ll let you sit in the driver’s seat to see how it feels and I can explain all the levers and knobs.”

“Really?” River asked excited at the prospect of feeling more grown-up.

“Yes, really.”

Once at the market, David nudged River, “What did I teach you?”

“Take the whole space in. Notice everything, don’t have tunnel vision,” River answered.

“Excellent. What have you noticed so far?”

“There’s a man over there stealing grapes by eating them to the left. Ms. Hamilton is busy gossiping at the register to our neighbour Mrs. Farley and it looks like the rolls in the bin are leftovers from yesterday since there are hardly any left.”

“Very good. Anything else?”

“The butcher is chatting up that young woman with the little girl in the trolley.”

“Perfect!” David said smiling brightly.

They picked up the groceries from the shop and came in through the side door nearest the stairs and heard Rose talking to someone.

“Rose? We’re back.”

“Oh, excellent, David. There’s a special guest in the kitchen for River.”

River looked at his grandfather, David shrugged.

They entered the kitchen together to find Isobel sitting at the table which caused his heart to sink. He hoped she wasn’t here to take River away. He had promised Rose he’d never allow it, but then he wasn’t yet attached to the boy. David loved River with every fibre of his being. River was his whole world along with Rose.

“River! You’re so tall!” Isobel said smiling and looking up at him from her chair.

River just stood there with a confused look on his face.

Isobel got up and went over to him to give him a hug which he didn’t fully return. David could tell River was wary, as well he should be under the circumstances. She might be his daughter, but he was disappointed with her as a mother. It took full year for them to bring River around, make him feel comfortable and safe and loved. Now she decided to show up unannounced and make a muck of things.

David looked to Rose who shot him a worried look.

“Yes, well boys do shoot up when they’re growing, Isobel. It’s been three years,” David said.

“I know. How’s my chap?”

“Fine.” River said shyly avoiding his mother’s eyes.

“Well that’s not the welcome I expected.”

David and Rose looked at each other again knowingly.

“Sorry, mum. I…wasn’t expecting you.”

“I thought I’d surprise you for your birthday!”

River looked less than pleased. David knew that because he could see the look in his eyes change from happy content boy to the scared and cautious one that arrived on his doorstep three years ago.

“Isobel has just returned from Malta. She’s thinking of coming back to England, David,” Rose said.

“Oh, really. Well I’m surprised you would want to given you enjoy living aboard so much in the warmer climes,” David said glaring at Isobel.

“Yes, well I’m not certain yet on what I want to do next, but I thought it would be nice to see River,” Isobel said stroking River’s arm affectionately.

River shrunk back from her touch. David could tell River wanted to retreat to his grandmother’s side for protection as he eyed her, but all Rose could do was smile back at River.

“Why don’t you take your mum to see your room, River. I’m sure she’d like to see it,” David suggested.

River of course obliged and took his mother upstairs.

“What the devil is she doing here, Rose?”

“I don’t know. She showed up in a taxi with some luggage. I was stunned,” Rose said getting up from the kitchen table.

“You had no idea?”

“No, she only sends River postcards and letters. I had no clue. Maybe she’s run out of money”

“Well if she has, I’ll gladly give her some to get her out of here. Did you see how unsettled River looked?”

“Yes.”

“Like you said Rose, he’s ours now. She’s no good for him. “

Rose nodded.

Later that evening after a very strained dinner, David took Isobel to the side while Rose did the washing up and River went upstairs to get ready for bed.

“Isobel you can’t have River back.”

“What? He’s my son.”

“You left him here with hardly anything one afternoon to run off to Spain with a man who is now long forgotten. I promised your mother, he stays here.”

“No. I want another chance.”

“Isobel you had your chance. He’s our boy now. You forfeited your rights that day.”

“Mum would never agree,” Isobel said.

“Yes, I would,” Rose said re-entering the room, drying her hands on a tea towel. “You abandoned him on our doorstep and haven’t seen him in three years. You don’t get to pick him up like a toy you suddenly want to play with again. He’s a sweet and loving boy who deserves more than your half-hearted interest. He doesn’t need you to discard him again when you get bored of him. He deserves more.”

“Rose is right Isobel. By all means spend time with him here, but I will not allow you take him,” David said.

While River was quite good at remaining unseen his grandfather spied him peering from around the corner towards the end of the conversation and River darted off when he had been ‘made’.

Late that night after everyone was in bed, River went downstairs as the fire in the study still blazed and his grandfather sat in the near dark room, clutching a crystal tumbler.

In a small voice River said, “Grandad?”

David turned to see River clad in his cosy flannel pyjamas with no slippers – better for creeping about soundlessly which River had achieved. “Yes, my boy.”

“I want to stay here with you and Nan.”

“Of course, you do and you will. I’m sorry you overhead that business earlier. I saw you lurking.”

“I should’ve hidden better.”

“You were upset and not thinking. But do remember there may be a time when you’re emotional and have to keep your head,” David said.

“Yes, I know. When it’s important I won’t let you down, Grandad.”

David smiled. “I know you won’t, River.”

And when it did matter River didn’t let David down.

“He came for me that night…he made it better...” David mumbled as the past merged with the recent present.

David’s heart swelled. He did train River well and he did make him proud no matter what the Park thought of his grandson. He was too good even for them.

River woke slowly Saturday morning, blinking as the room came into focus, a sliver of light peeped through the curtains in the middle. He moved to get up but his head throbbed. “Ugh,” he said plopping his head back down on the feather pillow. He glanced over at the night table with the empty whisky bottle and glass, the evidence of his solo drinking stint and his pounding head. River rubbed his eyes and yawned. He had to pull himself together. He was in dire need of aspirin and coffee.

Still in his clothes from yesterday, he hoisted himself from his grandparents’ bed. The contents of the box strewn about him. He staggered to the loo and was about to go in when knocking on the door left him groaning. Who would be here so early? The knocking continued. “Coming!” River shouted.

Bounding down the stairs as quick as his aching head would allow, he ripped open the door to find a surprised looking Catherine Standish holding a box of pastries. “Catherine?” River asked.

“River did you just wake up?”

“Yeah.”

“It’s after eleven in the morning.”

“Shit – is it? I was up late and fell asleep going through some stuff.”

“It smells more like you were going through a bottle.”

“Yes, I had a little something to drink.”

She cocked her head, staring up at him with her laser vision eyes, assessing him. “Judging by the state of you, I’d say it’s not a little. Let me make you some coffee.”

River extended his arm welcoming her into the house. As she’d been here before she knew where the kitchen was located and went straight to work. He wondered what Nan would have made of Catherine. She’d like that she was tidy and considerate and well organized if nothing else.

“Why don’t you get freshened up while I make you breakfast. It’ll help.”

River nodded, went upstairs to shower and change and popped some pain tablets. True to her word when he returned to the kitchen Catherine was sliding scrambled eggs onto a plate and he could smell coffee brewing. “Everything smells great. Thank you, Catherine,” he said shyly not making eye contact with her.

Catherine smiled. “Of course. This is such a hard time for you River. I want to help. Eat up before it gets cold,” She urged. “I’ll tidy upstairs.”

Shit, he hadn’t tried to hide the whisky bottle as he didn’t think she’d go upstairs. “Catherine you don’t have to!” he shouted as she went up the steps.

“No, it’s fine I don’t mind!” she shouted back.

River felt uncomfortable. He didn’t want to let yet another person down, especially after she pulled him to the side a few weeks ago realizing he had been coming to work hungover a little too often. Catherine warned him this is how drinking problems started. He sighed and dug into his eggs and once done poured himself coffee and one for her as well.

“River really?” Catherine held up the empty whisky bottle in one hand.

“I know. I don’t know how it happened. I was looking through all those things in the box and time got away from me and I fell asleep.”

“More like passed out. Do you want to be like Lamb? That’s where I see this heading, River!” Catherine chucked the whisky bottle in the recycle bin and it made an angry sound as it hit bottom. She huffed over to clean the crystal glass he had used last night at the sink.

“I made you some coffee,” River offered as he brought both his empty plate and a steaming mug to her.

“Thank you,” she grabbed the plate and fork and cleaned them vigorously.

“I am sorry. I had no intention of drinking that much last night. I found that box and it upset me and just brought so much back…” River said making eye contact this time.

Catherine put the plate and fork in the drainer on the sink. “I saw the things strewn across the bed. Did you make those for your grandparents?”

“Yes. I was surprised they saved all of it. Grandad never seemed sentimental.”

“Sometimes we can know people our whole life and never really know who they are because they don’t want to show us their true selves because they are afraid it will make them look weak.”

River broke in that moment. He’d never heard anything truer spoken about his grandfather. Months of dealing with his grandad and the fallout with his father and his mother’s lack of responsiveness about everything came washing over him in that bright, sunny kitchen at that very moment. He began to sob uncontrollably.

“Oh, River,” Catherine said putting the mug down she had only just accepted a moment before. She didn’t know what else to do but to embrace him. “Come here,” she put her arms around him and let him have a good cry. He had no one else and she was glad to be useful and supportive. She needed to save him from the demons that were creeping into his life where he thought drinking was the only answer.

After a couple of minutes, River broke away, “God, I’m so sorry, Catherine.” River wiped his face with the back of his hand. His blue eyes as sad as ever and so very bloodshot.

“No, don’t be sorry. We’re friends and friends support each other. Now, why don’t you freshen up and I’ll have my coffee and maybe we can go visit your grandfather?”

“Yeah, that would be great,” River turned to leave the kitchen, but turned back around. “Thank you for coming Catherine – you’re a real-life saver.”

Catherine smiled all the way to her eyes, she succeeded and made a difference and hopefully saved River. “Glad I could be here for you, River.”

River pulled up to the care home. Catherine got out of River’s car and grabbed her pastries from the backseat. They walked up the path and into the care home together and River lead her through to where the day room was but he didn’t see his grandfather. He spotted Orla helping a resident with her needlepoint.

“Orla, sorry but where’s my grandad?” he asked.

“Oh, River, hi…is this your…” Orla began as she looked over at Catherine.

“This my friend, Catherine. She knows my grandad. She looked after him recently,” River replied, cutting Orla off from assuming who Catherine was to him.

“Oh. He’s in his room. I think the stimulation in the common rooms are too much for him. Sylvie said he seemed better this morning and even asked for you,” Orla replied with a warm smile.

“Would you like a pastry?” Catherine offered.

“No, I’m good. I do appreciate it, though. I have some homemade shortbread waiting for me during my tea break.”

River smiled and motioned for Catherine to follow him.

“She’s a lovely young woman,” Catherine said as River guided her down the hallway towards David’s room.

“Yeah, she’s nice and seems to care a lot for the residents from what I can tell so far. Let’s hope he still wants to see me as things weren’t great yesterday when I left.”

“Sadly, that’s normal for someone with his condition. I hope I don’t upset him. I am worried about that as I’m not tied to the best memories he’s had,” Catherine said furrowing her brow and looking up at River.

“Nah, last time he saw you he seemed fine,” River said as he paused and peeped into his grandad’s room to find him in the chair by the window, practically where he left him yesterday but at least this time he had a book.

River knocked on the doorframe. “Grandad?” River said expectantly.

“Oh, River, my boy! That woman said you’d come and you did!” David smiled brightly at River who returned the gesture.

River crouched down to give his grandad a hug. He looked into his eyes when he pulled away and saw that old, familiar glimmer. He was cognizant for the time being which lifted River’s heart. He hoped it would last the whole visit. “Grandad, I brought Catherine. You remember her from when she looked after you.”

“Hi David, you stayed at my flat.”

“Oh, yes. You were with Lamb and Big Sam. How is Sam? I could always depend on him”

“Umm, David…” Catherine began.

“He used his flight fund to get away. Lamb got a postcard from him recently,” River lied. He wanted to spare his grandfather being the cause of Sam’s death. Plus, no need to change the tone of the visit unnecessarily.

“Hope it’s somewhere warm and tropical for his sake,” David said with a smile.

River wondered if there was a hell and if so, if people like Sam ended up there. He forced that thought from his mind given all the things he managed to get himself into since Slough House. “I’d tell you but I’d have to kill you!”

David chuckled at the old line he would tell River when he was too young to hear some of the more alarming spy stories David and the others at MI5 got up to back in the day.

A couple hours passed, including David having lunch and the pair even playing chess. David conceded that River could learn a lot from Catherine’s skills at the chessboard as she was a superior player. As the visit began to wind down River worried his grandfather would get upset when he left, as he always did as he wanted to go home with him.

“Knock, knock,” Orla said popping into the room, smiling.

“Oh, hey,” River said.

“She’s also better than you at chess.”

“Oh?” River asked confused.

“We played last night. You must be terrible if I’m better than you,” Orla said with cheeky grin.

River felt his cheeks warm. “Apparently I need to brush up on my chess skills from the sound of things.”

Catherine went to get her coat which alerted David to everyone’s imminent departure. “You’re not leaving me here still, River? Surely I’ve been here too long already.”

‘Grandad we’ve been over this before, it’s not safe at home.”

“River is right,” Orla added, “You see this place is really a sort of safe house for very special people and it’s still not safe for you to leave. I know it’s hard to be away from the place you love. I’m far from home, too.”

David narrowed his eyes, looking between the three people standing around him. He did remember that awful business with the man who wanted him dead. “Is the lunatic still out there then?”

“Yes, grandad, he is. The Park is working very hard to find him.”

There was no point telling his grandfather anything else if it placated him. At least he still understood certain concepts like a safe house for now.

“And your father is still out there then, too?”

“Yes, he is.”

“You need to be vigilant then, my boy. He’s very dangerous!” David said clearly becoming agitated.

Orla came closer, smiling and said, “Your grandson is very capable and he’ll be fine, won’t you?” she asked looking over to River.

River gave her a small nod, “Yes, absolutely. Don’t worry, I’ve got this, grandad.”

River did wonder if he truly had everything under control where Frank was concerned. The man was a highly skilled maniac and could come back to do God knows what to him or his grandad.

While Catherine said her goodbyes to David, River followed Orla out into the hallway to have a chat.

“Thanks so much for spending so much time with him and trying to keep him calm. I do really appreciate it,” River said with a smile.

“Oh, I owe you,” Orla said with a sly wink.

“What?”

“It was ages ago when we were kids, but I used to stay with my grandparents some summers when I was like ten or twelve. They lived a few houses away from your grandparents house. The Murrays?” Orla could see a light bulb go off in River’s expression. “You saved me and my kitten when I stupidly went up the tree to grab her.”

“You had very long hair then. God, I didn’t recognize you! I feel so stupid.”

“No, it’s fine! I didn’t realize you were the same River as I didn’t remember what your surname was since so much time had passed since the last time I saw you. Though I did think it unlikely I’d run into someone else in Kent named River.”

River chuckled. “Yeah, not one of the top ten baby names in the UK to be sure.”

“It’s a lovely name,” she said.

“My grandmother invited you to dinner a few times too now that I remember.”

“Yes, when your grandfather mentioned his wife Rose, it dawned on me. I rang my grandmother, she lives with her sister in Cornwall since my grandfather passed years ago now. I asked her and she confirmed it was the right family. It was such an odd coincidence, no?”

“Very odd, but definitely a happy coincidence,” River said with a broad smile.

“Indeed,” Orla said feeling colour rise in her cheeks. She was grateful when Catherine joined them in the hallway.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Orla!” River said as they were leaving and even gave a small wave accompanied by a smile.

“Absolutely.”

“I feel like I missed something,” Catherine said as they got outside into the cold air.

“Apparently Orla and I didn’t realize we knew each other as kids when she visited her grandparents in the summer.”

“Oh, that’s nice. I like her, River. She really cares about the residents.”

“She does,” River said.

Catherine smiled noticing the far away look River had on his face. She hoped Orla might prove to be a positive distraction for him.

My name is Helen Kingston and I am a student at NYU’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. A professor of mine, Doctor Noel Conti, recently made me aware of your restoration of Dante’s De Vulgari Eloquentia. While our university will be unable to post a sufficient bid, I wonder if you might consider allowing me to examine and take notes on the treatise before it goes to auction later this month.

It would mean a great deal to be able to see the work and, if you were willing, allow me to transcribe portions of the text to make it more accessible to other scholars. I understand you put a great deal of time into this restoration and would be more than happy to follow any restrictions you would set.

Now when we call something 'illustrious', we mean that it gives off light or reflects the light

that it receives from elsewhere: and we call men 'illustrious' in this sense, either because,

enlightened by power, they shine forth justice and charity upon other people, or because,

excellently taught, they teach most excellently, like Seneca or Numa Pompilius. And this vernacular of which I speak is both sublime in learning and power, and capable of exalting

those who use it in honour and glory.

Helen’s eyes flit over the book, the translated text outlined in bright pink highlighter. Notes are etched into the margins, an ink blot at the very edge from when she had become lost in thought.

There is something missing from the English translation but it saves for time.

She’s short on it now as the train starts to move once more. She sways, her eyes never leaving the book, as the outside world dims and they disappear into the tunnel.

Truthfully, she’s still shocked that Wick agreed to let her see the newly restored treatise in full. While copies of the first section in Dante’s essay had been published and translated widely, the original was said to consist of four sections. For years, centuries, really, scholars had thought that he’d ended it abruptly, either due to lack of interest or his own exile and persecution, but then an original had surfaced.

Lost in the stacks of a monastery and forgotten.

It makes her wonder what else is hidden away, waiting to be found once more and brought to the light.

Of course, the work was almost immediately set to be auctioned.

It hadn’t even hit the desks of the dozens of drooling academics before it was shipped overseas to New York, which was how it first came to her attention: a debate in class about the ethics of conservation and wanting artifacts to belong to the public but acknowledging that private funding is often necessary to pay for their work.

The professor had casually referenced the current status of De Vulgari Eloquentia and Helen had felt it. A sharp tug in her stomach, as if fate had led her to find it.

When class was over, she’d approached Doctor Noel Conti for more information.

Fate, indeed, she’d thought. She still isn’t certain she believes in such a concept but the fact that Noel not only referenced the text she’d spent hours pouring over and happened to have a connection to the man repairing it didn’t feel like coincidence, either.

Her leg shakes of its own volition as the train starts to slow, a loud bell followed by the even voice calling out her stop.

Closing the book and holding it close, Helen rises to her feet and makes her way to the door. Her shoulders shift inward, making herself smaller so she can slip through the crowds, ignoring the rush of people waiting to fill her coveted, empty seat.

The doors open and she hits the pavement.

She’d reviewed the online map a few dozen times before leaving her apartment that morning, bribing a fellow graduate student with coffee to take her shift at the library while she took the first time offered by Mister Wick.

“He’s a bit of a recluse, far as I can tell,” Noel had told her when she’d insisted on trying to access the treatise. “Excellent at what he does, but a bit standoffish. I wouldn’t take it personally if he ignores the request altogether.”

But he hadn’t.

Another point in favor of fate.

And now, here she is, trying not to breathe in too deeply as she hurries through the station. The warm weather is beautiful as winter passes into spring but the stench makes her want to gag and book a long vacation away from the city.

It improves only slightly as she hits the street and takes off towards Hemlock. She’d given herself plenty of time to make the trip.

Wick had already surprised her with his generosity in allowing her to see the book. Helen wasn’t above taking full-advantage and staying the entire two hours he’d referenced in his email.

Hell, she’s half-tempted to stuff the book in her bag and make a run for it.

She won’t.

Probably.

Her heels click on the sidewalk as she weaves in and out of the people around her. Years in the city and she doubts she’ll ever get used to it. The speed at which life moves coupled with the total dissociation between the people. There is no slowing down or offering a helping hand. Receiving a smile is a rare luxury.

It’s as though all of New York is on edge.

At all times.

Always.

The discomfort does not fade until she turns onto Hemlock and the crowd begins to thin.

Advanced Restorations is on the basement floor of a mid-sized building. Not unusual, given the work he did. He’d want to keep his works in a cool environment.

Hence, why she brought layers.

She makes quick work of the steps down to the lowest level. The glass panel on the door has the name of the shop etched onto it and a bell tinkles as she opens it.

The interior of the shop is all dark colors. It reminds her of a speakeasy with the mahogany accents and dim lights. The walls are lined with displays— some of books, some of tools, and locked curios with a mix of both.

There’s a counter that’s devoid of everything she’d expect to see in a shop— no phone, no computer. Not even a register.

It feels less like a shop and more like a private museum.

She steps closer to the nearest display, examining the Cyrillic script. Her own area of expertise might be limited to Latin and Attic and Koine Greek but she can recognize the book for an antique regardless.

“Helen Kingston?”

Helen jumps, heart jumping into her throat at the low voice.

He’d come through another door, hidden by a curtain.

“Christ,” she swears and he smirks.

“Apologies,” he says, although he looks anything but apologetic as he steps further into the light.

It’s awful to admit but she’d been expecting something else entirely when Noel had described Wick to her. In truth, she’d thought nothing about his appearance until this moment.

There’s something undeniably attractive about a smirk and his might be lethal. The narrowing of the eyes, the subtle furrowing of the brow while the lips quirk provocatively. More than that, it’s the feeling of being seen. A judgment cast that doesn’t sting painfully but burns playfully and, Christ, indeed.

He’s the very definition of tall, dark, and handsome. A well-tailored suit, complete with vest and tie, covers his body as if it was made for him. Maybe it is— she can only imagine how much money he’ll earn on commission for a seven-hundred-year-old treatise by Dante Alighieri. It could easily reach a million at auction. Maybe more, with the right buyers.

The thought, alone, shakes her from her reverie.

“John Wick?” she asks.

“You can use my workshop to look at the text,” he says, forgoing the niceties as he walks to the door. He flips around the welcome sign and the lock on the door. “I didn’t ask, but I’m assuming you’re fluent in Latin?”

Helen nods, shifting her bag on her shoulder. “My work is primarily in Classical but I have enough understanding to read and transcribe Ecclesiastic.”

His brow raises thoughtfully, even as his gaze drifts past her and he crosses to the back of the shop once more. “You’re at ISAW?” he asks.

“Yes,” she answers, still scanning the variety of texts he has on display. “I’m working on my Ph.D right now.”

“Studying what, exactly?”

“My dissertation is on the power distribution from the Conflict of Orders of the Roman Republic to the birth of the Empire.”

An answering hum is all she receives as he slips back through the curtained room. She blinks, wondering if she is meant to follow before deciding she’s going regardless.

The shop is practically a museum and years in academia have taught her that the real wonders are rarely on display for the public. Sure enough, as she crosses the threshold to the private area, she’s transported back in time.

There’s a table that lines the back wall, neatly organized with materials for binding and handling and restorations. There are a handful more curios, each displaying different books and codexes and—

“Are those tabulas?” Helen asks, slipping past John to a pedestal glass table holding not one, not two, but three ancient Roman tablets. While they hadn’t originally been invented, or even perfected, in Rome but these were unmistakably of that era.

Precursors to slates and books and journals, the tabula was a double-edged diptych, hinged together in the middle with leather chords. Two were open to display the wax center and styluses used to write and scribe. The third is closed, the ornately-carved cover in astonishing condition.

A remarkable coincidence, she thinks.

“They are.”

“How on earth did you get your hands on these?” she breathes, bending to examine them.

“One I traded in Florence in exchange for assistance restoring works once belonging to the Medici family. Another was a gift. And one is a replica.”

Her eyes narrow, taking in the details. The state of the wood, the consistency of the wax, the bindings themselves.

“Is this one the replica?” she points to the second open copy.

“How could you tell?” He sounds almost amused.

“The wax looks less dense.” She looks up then. “Did you make this?”

He bows his head slightly in answer.

“It’s exquisite.”

“Thank you.” At that, he turns his head towards the back of the room and the table along it. “But I believe you came for this.”

Sure enough, the work in question is resting upon a cradle. Her heart skips a beat at the sight of it, fingers flexing, eager to explore but procedure must be followed.

“Where can I wash my hands?”

The bookbinder motions towards another door and she slips into the half-bathroom. She makes quick work of washing and is extra careful drying even as her heart thuds with anticipation.

It’s still a long shot, finding anything worth noting in the text. She resists the nervous habit to run her hand through her hair as she approaches the table, taking the seat that John indicates.

Her eyes trail to him once more.

His presence is almost impossibly quiet.

Men like him— undeniably attractive and lavishly wealthy— were rarely so resigned.

Not that she made a habit of giving her time to people of such stature but networking was a shadow upon academia. Research needed to be funded and that often meant schmoozing and politics.

And people who fit the bill tended to be loud and abrasive. There was no devotion to social niceties when they paraded as if they were all above it. They commanded attention and took liberties without apology.

They didn’t sit in silence, still as a statue.

But here is John Wick, doing just that.

And Helen can’t help but wonder what it is that she’s missing.

“You can put your things there,” he says, gesturing towards the end of the table where a wallet, car keys, and empty Tupperware sit.

She does, taking only her notepad and pencil before taking a seat next to him.

John reaches across towards the book.

She can’t help but notice his large hands. It’s always been a weakness of hers. There is something about hands in motion that makes her face warm, her stomach flip, and her imagination run wild.

And what an imagination she has. For the briefest of moments, she imagines that hand touching her face. It would surely engulf it. His eyes would soften as he looked down at her, his gaze falling to her lips…

His hands slip away as John opens the cover, revealing the Latin text below.

She refocuses her attention, pushing the fantasy exactly where it belongs: in the back of her mind to be spared no more than a fleeting thought.

There’s a thousand reasons why it isn’t worth exploring, not the least because he’s easily twenty years her senior. She may be used to being surrounded by older peers as the youngest person in her graduate cohort but the difference between a few years and decades may have well as been centuries.

And he has been kind enough to offer her time. Two hours, she recalls. The window Wick had offered her into this rare text.

Helen begins to read.

The girl’s brow is furrowed.

The glabellar lines don't fit on her youthful face. She's otherwise free of wrinkles but not quite clear of acne. Rounded cheeks of a child but the serious countenance of someone much older.

He can't quite place her age. Usually, he can clock a human at twenty paces but right now, he is uncertain.

Her clothes give nothing away, save for a nod to NYU with her zip-up sweatshirt draped over her plain, gray dress. But anyone in the city had access to school merchandise. Knock-offs could be found on dozens of street corners.

He’d thought that her experience might offer more insight in watching her use the text but she turns each page with the proficient hand of someone who had been doing so for years.

A youthful face and an experienced hand would usually make him think of his own kind but Helen Kingston’s heart beats with the harsh, vital need of a human.

Something doesn’t fit.

He isn't sure why it bothers him so much.

Well, perhaps that’s not true. Business has been slow lately. The only targets he’d been sent to kill had been like him and a vampire could not feed from their own kind.

Without human targets, he’s forced to hunt. And when a young graduate student offers herself on a platter, how can he refuse?

Except the girl who had shown up on his doorstep is young. He has rules about that. The Table doesn’t care where he gets his sustenance, so long as no one is the wiser, but John draws the line at children.

He supposes humans have those same concerns, too. Veal is still controversial, after all.

John is fairly certain she’s an adult but still…

“How long have you known Noel?” John asks as he runs a curved needle through aged pages.

Helen pauses and blinks in consideration. “Technically, seven years, I think?”

“Technically?”

“We met in person for the first time when I started at NYU. But we'd been talking online since I was eleven.” Helen stops and looks up before John can react. “I just realized how that probably sounds. I, uh, reached out to him to discuss his book, The Essential Latin when I was first learning the language. He gave me a lot of encouragement and advice over the years.”

“You started Latin at eleven?”

“My dad wanted me to be a doctor. A lot of anatomy is rooted in Latin and Greek.” She flushes and gestures to the work in front of her. “Which you know, obviously. I thought it would be helpful.”

There it is, he thinks and asks, “How old were you when you graduated high school?”

“Fourteen.” He doesn’t miss the way she’s stiffened under his scrutiny. “But I did concurrent enrollment for a little while at a local community college. Got a lot of the gen ed credits out of the way.”

Over the centuries, he’d met a handful like her. Gifted, in the truest sense of the world. Those who were born a little bit smarter or a little bit faster than those around them. They were typically either revered or killed.

Either way, such prowess screams of danger.

People like her had the habit of attracting dangerous people.

He can practically hear Ivan’s harsh drawl offering him money, land, and power, if only he shares his gift…

The cursed words disappear as Helen continues, “Took me a moment to get my bearings. I spent a year doing pre-med garbage before I put my foot down about wanting to major in Ancient Studies and Anthropology.”

The fields are respected enough, even in his world. Many factions still patronize such researchers to find evidence of their own ancestry.

Physicians have far less worth amongst the undead. They don’t hold the same life-saving connotation in his world, though. There is no such thing as a mortal injury for vampires. Either you were injured, and would heal with rest and time, or you were dead. No one can come back from dust.

“Quite a leap from that to this,” John comments, indicating his office and the various relics he’s collected over a long lifetime.

“It was the right leap,” she answers and she sounds confident about that, despite the faraway look in her eye.

After a moment she smiles to herself and John is forced to acknowledge, quite abruptly, that she really is quite pretty. All soft curves and doe-eyes. The very picture of innocence.

He’s willing to bet that even her blood would be sweet and his fangs lengthen at the thought. John resists the urge to test the theory. Some things are too pure to be tainted.

He lowers his attention back to the eighteenth-century diary he is rebinding and doesn’t allow himself to glance back until he hears the scratch of a pencil on her notepad. He’d spared it a glance a bit ago but her writing is in some form of shorthand that he can’t make out given the current angle.

There’s something about her, about this, that doesn’t quite fit.

She’s focused. So focused. She flips through the text as furiously as one can while still remaining utterly careful.

She's looking for something, he realizes. Something specific.

“Your interest in Dante— is it academic or personal?” John asks and Helen blinks, glancing up from the text briefly.

“Both, I suppose.”

“Is it related to your research?”

Her head dips to the side. “Not directly. Or maybe. Truthfully, I’m just following a hunch.” Wincing, she notes, “Sorry. That was super unclear. Are you familiar with Numa Pompilius?

Cocking his head to the side, “The second king of Rome was well before the Roman Republic.”

Helen sat up, biting her lip and nodding. “Yes, he was. But it’s connected. During his reign, Numa wrote a collection of books that detailed religious rituals and practices of early Rome. He did them all, himself, too, saying that he was told to record these divine teachings from the Muses themselves. Then, supposedly, demanded these books be buried with him.

“Flash forward hundreds of years, to the Republic, when a flood washes up two stone coffins,” she continues without so much as taking a breath. “One of them has Numa’s name written on it, but it is empty. There’s no body. The other claims to hold his sacred books. So word gets out that they’ve found these books that supposedly vanished and the local praetor reads them then declares they must be burned immediately and most legends state they were.”

“Most,” John repeats the word she had stressed.

“Most,” Helen agrees. “But an account from Lucius Cassius Maro, an apparitor, claims it was all staged. That the books that were recovered were taken by a local senator, Antonius Quintus Iunia, and put into his personal collection.”

“I’m following the history but not the connection with Dante.”

“There are two main ones. The first of which: Lucius was Virgil’s great-grandfather,” Helen fills in.

“As in…?”

“That Virgil, yeah. But, more importantly, Dante references to Numa in part one, praising his works as a leader, as well as commending his efforts as someone who ‘trained others’ well.”

It’s a longshot, John thinks. Even so, he follows her line of thinking. Any reference to the long-dead king would be worth the follow through.

He tries to recall any such reference from his own exploration of the text but what she’s looking for is so obscure. A throwaway sentence or two, that would likely offer little.

Truthfully, it sounds a little too much like a shot in the dark but she seems fairly certain she's on the right track so he leaves it alone.

“I don't have anything after this tonight,” he tells her. “Don't feel constrained by the two hours.”

“I don't want to keep you here too late…”

“I don't mind. I'd likely be here working on this,” he lifts his hands, showing the book, “anyway. Take your time.”

The smile she bestows on him is gut-wrenching.

“Thank you, John.”

There's a strange sensation in his chest.

It’s as if his lungs have exhaled, contracting around the emptiness that he is already so used to.

It’s a common misconception that vampires do not breathe at all. They do. Their heart still beats, albeit slower and less often. They don’t require the intense rate of breath that humans did.

Of course, when in company such as this, he forces the breaths to come a little quicker than they needed to so he can provide the illusion of humanity.

It was part of the earliest training a fledgling vamp went through. First, they learned to control the blood lust. Then, they learned to hide in plain sight.

Vampires might run the world, but there is safety and secrecy

Not knowing vampires exist effectively stops humans from learning how to truly kill them.

The High Table pays a great deal of money to ensure Hollywood perpetuates ideas of garlic, stakes, and sunlight.

John still isn’t certain who came up with the idea that holy water could burn vampires or a cross could ward off evil but that was quite possibly the biggest load that the High Table had ever come up with. Or maybe that was something the humans came up with on their own.

In reality, the only things that can kill him is the cessation of brain activity, typically by beheading or wood from the Yew tree to the heart.

In all likelihood, the young woman beside him would go to the grave without ever knowing the truth about the world she lived in. She would never learn that the laws of her people were carefully crafted to promote chaos from within. She’d never realize that her research in academia was likely funded by those under the Table for access to the relics of their past. She’d never know that she, and everyone else she knew, existed as a form of cattle for people like him.

At some point, beyond tonight, Helen would be used for her blood.

The thought raises something else within him. He shifts to ease the discomfort but it lingers in his spine.

The thought of fangs breaking her delicate skin, another feasting on her…

There is a sudden tightness in his throat, a spasm, as if his body is trying to expel something that just isn’t there. His lips purse and he looks down and tries to breathe through his nose.

Again, he feels his stomach lurch and his throat tense yet again, as if he might get sick.

He doesn’t.

The sensation passes and he lets the exhale course through his mouth slowly, his breath coming minutely faster of its own accord. He doesn’t even need to mimic the speed of human breath.

The next inhale is steady and purposeful as he focuses for a moment on what his body is doing.

It's been centuries since he's had to go back to the basics like this, reorienting himself to his body and being mindful of his actions so as not to expose himself for what he truly is: a predator.

He concentrates on his breath while he does his best to clear his mind and return to his conservation state, storing his energy so that he might use it later when it is most needed.

Winston had once described it as a survival response in the extremes. An elongated state of freeze so that he might fight or run with power and speed that the girl beside him would not be able to comprehend.

Strange, he thinks.

It’s as if his mind is registering the young human as if she is a threat.

The reality couldn't be farther from the truth. Helen is young and inexperienced. She’s full of life in a way that screams naivety.

He could be fang-deep before she could draw her next breath.

The thought should make him hunger, his mouth water. It had been days since he’d had a good meal.

It wouldn’t take long to subdue her. A touch is all it takes. A pressure point on the back of her neck that would effectively make her brain go foggy, her memory hazy. Suggestible.

And once he had taken his fill, he could send her on her way, none the wiser.

Helen gently turns the page, taking exceptional care of the book.

It would be a shame, he thinks, to tamper with such a mind.

There were no lasting effects from the occasional feed, but still.

The idea of the light leaving her eyes, even for a moment, has his fingers curling into claws. Its sacrilege, he thinks, to participate in the destruction of art. Even the idea of it feels intrusive, wrong.

So he remains in place and listens to the steady beat of her heart, the soft rush of each breath, the delicate scratch of graphite on paper. The rhythm is as comforting as her presence and it lulls him, finally, to relax.

Minutes tick by like seconds. She looks at him as it approaches six and he offers an encouraging nod to continue.

He swallows heavily at the grateful smile she flashes him before continuing.

They work in quiet tandem and he finds he doesn't hate sharing the space with someone else. Quite the opposite.

It's almost disappointing when carefully closes the book and sets it gently back on its cradle.

“I suppose I've taken enough of your time. I really can't thank you enough, John.”

“Not a problem.”

She turns, packing her belongings carefully in her bag.

He could strike now. She wouldn't even see him.

All he has to do is move. Launch forward and sink his fangs into her pale neck. His arms wrapped around her to hold her steady while he drank his fill.

She would never know, never remember.

“I'm going to be writing a brief summary of the content to post online. Would you like me to give you and your shop credit?”

“No,” he answers, a pang of hunger in his stomach. “Thank you, though.”

She shifts her bag up and over her shoulder. “If you change your mind, shoot me an email.”

Move, he thinks. Strike. Bite. Feed.

But he can't bring himself to move.

“Thank you,” she says and with a last smile, turns to leave.

The last chance.

Her hair shifts, bouncing as she steps towards the door. Helplessly oblivious.

John blinks and, in the moment his eyes close, can feel himself moving. Reaching out a hand to grab ahold of her neck, subduing her. She sinks into his grip, his arms slipping around her curves to keep her aloft as he shifts her body to leave her throat exposed. His fangs, piercing the skin.

Her blood, bursting into his mouth. Warm and sweet. Intoxicating.

He stops himself before he takes too much and sends her home with bleary eyes. Dazed and confused.

And by morning, she will have convinced herself it was only a dream. Only ever a dream.

John opens his eyes, mouth watering as he watches Helen Kingston open the door. She turns, one last time, and offers a little wave. “It was really great to meet you, John.”

“Likewise,” he murmurs, and lets her go.

The bell on the door tinkles as it closes behind her.

It looks like he’ll be hunting tonight, after all.
