4.0, I've gotten better over the years, especially with just sharing over two ish years ago. I'd like to go back and brush up some descriptions but other than that I say it's good! 

What do you think makes your writing stand out from other works?

I say the characters I decide to make each one of my characters are their own person that I can see being real. They are definitely my favorite part of my stories.

Are there any writers that inspire you?

Right now, Brandon Sanderson. I'm reading through his first novels now. The way he uses descriptions to worldbuild is amazing! And I love his characters

And all my friends on the server, the people over there write some incredible stuff!

What’s the fic you’re most proud of?

Stella Archer, I wrote that story in college it's a decade old & I never thought I'd finish it let alone share it! Stella's been with me the longest so you can see how I used to write then vs. now all in one series. 

Which character(s) do you find easiest to write and which do you find most difficult to write?

Easiest to write: George Weasley cause anything goes with him. He's goofy, sweet, confident and a wildcard. That's really fun to play with. 

Hardest/Challenging: Neville Longbottom & Druig. These two are my heads & tails. They are complete opposites. Druig's is inquisitive and there's a depth to him that I can relate too, and hes smart mouth, my favorite kind of guy lol. 

Neville is soft, confident, brave & empathic. There are things i can have Druig do that i can’t do with Neville and vice versa. I could talk about their differences forever but they are still a fun challenge to write. 

Who or what do you find yourself writing about most?

Usually whatever idea I haven't done yet or I want to try. I write a lot about superheroes or powered individuals. Often with my own spin 😏. Friends to lovers mostly. 

Tell us about a WIP you’re excited about!

im working on the ending of Bloom, it's the last character arch for Neville. His eldest will be looking at school brochures and some of his past students will make a groundbreaking medicine for people who have pain caused from curses & his parents being among the ones able to get the medicine. Meaningful things happen & I'm excited to write it!!!

Harry Potter; 😂 nothing has changed I still love the universe.

I dont feel guilty about them their all pleasures; so Soulmate AUs, soft dark, Coffee Shop AUs, threesomes, genderbending.

Wildest fic you’ve ever written?

Never Too Late, I put as many of my favorite tropes in there as I could. Soulmate AU, Coffeeshop AU, gross loving couple, old married couple, Tall boi, short girl…etc. And they fucked for a hobby. It was so nuts I made a game out of it in that universe had it's own rules & everything 😂 So much unhinged stuff happens in that fic & I don't regret any of it 😂. 

Favorite pairing to write for? (platonic or romantic!)

OCs x main character. Which is usually an extension of me somehow cause i said so. Even the very few readers stuff i have i always pictured myself.

I have a playlist for each story i have & i cycle through thoes whenever i need the vibes

My ficts are day dreams haha. Hmmm I have a bunch of daydreams about Daphne & Charlie spending time with their parents as a family in some of the places they have traveled to when they didn't have kids. That and the adventures of Daphne & Lottie growing up. But I'm really stubborn about aging my OCs kids so most of them stop at a certain age.

16. Is there anything you’ve wanted to write, but you’ve been too scared to try?

Not scared, I just don’t know how to write it. I want to make my own villain somehow but i gotta figure out so many things first. Or the villain's spouse or something, it’s still on the drawing board. I don't do many dark things so it would be a challenge for me. 

What’s the nicest comment you’ve ever received?

All the comments on my first dark oneshot, Sweet Dreams. It was just me playing around with Druig’s powers to a higher level then flooring it. It was fun & the ones of my first series Stella Archer that story is a decade old. So to get comments on that was special 

Have you ever gone outside of your comfort zone for a fic? How did it turn out?

For Between the Shadows I did cause i was trying to portray my OC for that a certain way without making her sound boring. That was a hard fic for me in many, many ways. But it turned out great! I’ve never introduced an OC in a more profound way than I did with Juni and it was refreshing to experiment with that OC.

I have 13 fully developed ones and the rest are side ones. But here are some of my favorites!  

Stella Archer-Asgardian Demi-god think of Gaia with all the powers of the elements. She has 4 kids. And married her highschool sweetheart George Weasley. 

Flower- a nymph of mythology origins. Her power is growing flowers and plants from anywhere as long as she has a water source. She carries a pouch of soil around with her for such an occasion. She stayed with her love even though he was cursed by the flying dutchman. 

Ruby Morgan- Charms professor, classic style of dress, her magic specialty is levitation she can make anything levitate with a snap of her fingers. She grew up in France raised by her Dad and her Grandmother. She can read Latin, speak French and loves cats.  

Angus Kohler- Scottish, loves to drink. His magic specialty is tracking. He teaches Care of Magical Creatures. Head of Hufflepuff house. Werewolf, he’s Neville’s best friend and Ruby’s too. Plays the bagpipes at every graduation in full kilt attire that matches Hufflepuff.

I’d enter Never Too Late cause that OC is the closest to me irl and I basically gave her everything I wanted and didn't skip any details lol. I would gladly love to be in that universe.

Thanks to feedback from some PTR-syncing HDD users, the new siblings update code, most importantly in step 407->408, takes way too long for them - perhaps more than 24 hours. I have written a little yes/no dialog popup into the update step that talks about this and optionally activates a 'lite' mode that does not apply siblings. This still requires some basic cache copying work, but it is significantly less. If you are still on 407 or before and have been waiting to update, please give this a go and let me know how it works for you.

The 'manage where tag siblings apply' dialog now has some red text to warn about the high CPU/HDD of applying many siblings to a large number of tags. I am still not happy with the 'monolithic' way this db work goes, so when I get stuck into the parents cache, I will write an asynchronous system that does this work in the background, pause/resumable, without interrupting browsing and so on, much like I did with repository processing.

Some things were working slow since siblings (e.g. in a search, mixing wildcard tags with regular tags), but I went through every instance of my new optimisation code, fixing bugs, testing it at large scale, and smoothing spikes out further. Tag, namespace, wildcard, tag presence/count, known url, and file note searches should all be more reasonable. A neat new tag search pre-optimisation routine that checks autocomplete counts for expected result size before deciding how to search now works for more sorts of tags and also kicks in for namespace and wildcard searches, which now break their work into smaller and simpler pieces. I also added and reshaped some database indices, which will ensure that more unusual search types and general operations can still run efficiently. Extended Validation Certificates are the most secured as they are only provided when the company’s website meets all the requirements and are identified with the company’s name with a padlock sign in the address bar.

Organization Validated certificates also include the company’s information but are not displayed and users need to view certificate details to view this.

Domain Validated Certificates are the most common type of SSL with the least amount of information in the certificate, but it also means that users can get the impression that the domain is not owned by the company itself although it is verified with a registered domain. Domain Validated SSLs are not suggested for business websites. With the increasing number of phishing attacks happening. It becomes more important for companies to use and promote the use of identified domains (OV or EV) for better security and gain your end user’s reliability.

There are majorly three types of SSL- Single-Domain SSL, Multi-Domain SSL, Wildcard SSL.

Single Domain SSL Certificate secures only the specific hostname on which it gets issued. E.g., if it gets issued on login.abc.com, it will cover login.abc.com only.

A Multidomain SSL Certificate secures all the domains/subdomains which are added to the certificate. There is no restriction on the number of domains or subdomains you want to add to the single certificate, but there may be additional cost involved. E.g., in a Multidomain SSL certificate, you can add www.abc.com, login.abc.com (Subdomain of abc.com), crm.xyz.in (different domain), etc.

I had a good week. I continued last week's server work and have a macOS Big Sur build available for testing.

new macOS build

This was delayed far longer than I wanted, but I think I have it figured out now. Thanks to work from Suika and ReAnzu on github figuring out the script, the macOS build is now put together on github itself, on Catalina. This new build thus works on Big Sur, and should generally have less compatibility jank on any newer macOS machine. I have included my old 10.12-built release as well today, just in case I messed something up, but if you are a macOS person, please give the new one a try and let me know how you get on.

Assuming this works out ok for the majority of people, I'll be moving to it as the official macOS build. Anyone who is still on an old macOS will have to run from source to stay updated with hydrus. The new release is just out of testing, so I'll clean up the filename and add the readme.rtf and so on so it looks prettier. I will also explore reducing the size (300MB vs 137MB wew), but I am told this may be unavoidable due to some new macOS thing that bundles both old and new versions of libraries in the App.

editable repository update periods

Just in case, it is probably a good idea to back up your server before you try this!

Hydrus repositories now have an editable update period! This was an oft-requested feature for users running a server on a LAN or between just a few friends, so if this is you, please give it a go. There is a new 'edit options' permission for accounts, which any account with 'manage account types' (admins basically) will inherit on update. If you have this, the 'admin services' menu will have a new 'edit update period' entry, which launches a simple time delta widget where you can change it.

Changes occur immediately. The server will create any updates that are now due, and your client will do a resync to keep up to date with the new numbers, so if you have 'review services' open when you make the change, you should see everything update in realtime. Other clients that sync with the server will catch up with the new check times when they next do their normal sync, unless they too force a resync with the new 'review services' button I added last week.

You can change the update several times, up or down, and it shouldn't be a big deal--the client no longer cares if one set of updates were short or long--so please feel free to play around with this a bit, just don't go crazy with super short or long times. The minimum is 10 minutes, but I recommend you only go down to about 60 minutes if you really want to be that fast, at least as we experiment with this. The system was originally built with 100,000 seconds in mind, so I think super short periods will add overhead bloat over time (not to mention, you only see content after processing, which atm only happens in idle time anyway).

I had another go at multi column list 'last column' resizing. Dialogs shouldn't judder around so much when you resize them, and more instances of dialogs growing or shrinking slightly on the every re-open ''should'' be mitigated.

Tag upload to a repository has a new safety check for a particular error state. I know one user got stuck with some pending mappings that wouldn't clear--in fact it lead to an endless cycle of uploading!--which is now caught, and a new maintenance routine can fix it.

The Client API's file search now converts tags with asterisks into wildcard or 'namespace' search terms. Its version is now 16. Also added to the Client API help page is a link to https://ififfy.github.io/flipflip/#/ , an advanced slideshow engine that now supports hydrus as a source.

a new macOS build that should run on Big Sur is now ready, it should be attached to this release. it is built on github automatically, and is thanks to hard work from Suika and ReAnzu. I am attaching my old release as well, just in case I messed up somewhere on my end. if you are a macOS user, please try the new App! it will not work on very old macOS like 10.12, but if this works out today for the majority of macOS users, I will be moving to just putting this new build out going forward. I'll add some polish like the readme.rtf and harmonise the filename etc.. too. I'd love to cut the filesize down, but this may not be possible (it is apparently some modern macOS thing where it bundles old and new versions of libraries in the same App so you basically get it twice)

the infamous multi-column list 'last column' width calculations are improved: first, dialogs with multi-column lists should no longer judder back and forth a single character's width as you expand the parent window. also, the last column saved size (which is used in dialog relaunch width initialisation) is now snapped to rounded 5-character intervals, which should mitigate various 'fuzzy' reasons for some dialogs to remember a larger or smaller size and grow or shrink one or more characters' width on the next launch

the _help->debug->gui actions_ menu has a new entry to reset all multi-column list saved widths back to default

the 'edit OR predicate' panel when you shift+double-click an OR predicate now expands horizontally and vertically with the window

the 'edit search predicates' list in the 'edit favourite search' panel now expands vertically with the window

the client now detects some invalid tag mapping states on tag upload--when a mapping is both current & pending or when it is both deleted and petitioned. these pair-states are mutually exclusive, normally impossible to get to, but one user who nonetheless ended up in this situation encountered an infinite uploading loop to a tag repository (since the tag was already current/deleted, the pending/petitioned status was not clearing correctly on upload commit). now, the upload will be abandoned and an info message put up with the fix

added a new maintenance routine to _database->check and repair_ that fixes logically inconsistent mappings. it has a popup dialog when it works and forces a pending count refresh and shows a summary afterwards

the routine that counts up total current or pending mappings on a service when the cached number has been reset is now massively faster (from a 30-60s down to less than a second in my dev tests). it now sums the tag autocomplete cache, rather than counting raw tables

fixed the BUGFIX option in 'connections' that allows you to disable ssl verification. this will also be extended at a later date to be domain-specific

new server stuff:

a new permission is added to hydrus service accounts--'manage options'. any account with 'manage account types' will get this by default on update

any account on a repository with 'manage options' permission will now see 'change update period' in the admin services menu! it launches a time delta control with the current update period and will send the new one up to the server. the client will resync account, options, and metadata immediately, and the server will generate any now-due updates immediately, so you should be able to watch changes occur in 'review services' and the server terminal live. other users will catch up to the new time when they next hit an update. various hardcoded check periods (like how often due updates are checked for and delay-buffered clientside and serverside) are shrunk significantly. the whole system should react to changes better

the minimum settable update time is now 10 minutes (the default value remains 100,000 seconds), but I recommend you try larger, say an hour minimum, at least to start. the network generally works more efficiently with higher numbers, and be warned, if you are adding 144 updates a day, there may be bloat problems after a year
