Episode 2 To Be Hero X Liveblog

For context on my knowledge going into the show, check here. The gist is I'm going in relatively blind minus a few specific points.

Now, onwards

Oh, okay, the pre-credits has a lot of info in the space of maybe five seconds

aha. The Incident. we meet again.

New person framed between Nice and Moon as it talks of their relationship. Empty cans to the forefront, the healthiest of character intros. That mole on the face should hopefully help me identify them anyway (I say as though this show doesn't have people change physical traits).

"If I can't have something, neither can anyone else." alright, yandere type.

2d backstory this time resembles a kid's comic. Thinking stuff like the start of Look Back, aspects of TBH. Fantasy-like, essentially. Annnd swivels into the 3d as 'reality' hits.

"Thank goodness. Everything's okay." x doubt.

Distance!

oh- you know, I was going to keep screenshotting the distance between them but I think if I do that, I'll have to capture the entire episode

Marketing + branding again. Power is gained through it, as we already knew. The influencer backstory to Moon just backs that up. Being seen as a commodity rather than a person. Moon being saddled as the girlfriend role against her will. The fact she was glad Nice was dead (unclear at this stage whether it was because og Nice sucked or if it was simply a case of two people being forced to be together creating resentment).

"So we have to make sure Nice exists forever, no matter what." Hm, okay, horrifying. That tracks.

"I'll give you some time to think it over." <- well now that's just sus-- oh she's locking them in until they agree. Fair enough

The music can't be the same but why does the background music here whilst LL is blushing sound like that Squid Game OST.

Wasn't warned about the crimes against pianos. I can't look :pensive:

"He can't stand any imperfections or uncleanliness." Noting down for if/when Lin Ling goes that way--

Thinking of the choice of fruits being red on their white clothes + the flash of Moon's body with blood on it.

My guess about her being unable to portal away had been that she had lost the ability as her fame became more attached to Nice's. That she became sidelined as she became only known in association with. The actual answer is... well, the logic follows, but the end result is worse than I'd considered.

Whoa, one month. Didn't think they'd let it take that long considering you'd presumably want to keep content being created for them to not lose their Trust etc.

Not sure what I make of this in the context of og Nice committing suicide.

"It was my job to turn black into white. To make the impossible possible."

Oof, everyone on their phones streaming/taking photos and the prominent drone. Really capturing the whole aspect of them putting on a show.

Wreck as a parasocial fan, I see. Okay, so the whole "I object" thing being an act makes sense, but Wreck said the same thing as the start of the episode about "if I can't have something then no one can" so... same person or no? The villains are also cast by the same people as the heroes, makes sense, given it's all a marketing thing. You only get strong heroes with strong villains.

"Speak. Where is Nice?" So the ramble about not answering messages etc was legit then :V. Mask off, yes, same guy as pre-credits.

"What's going on with him?" I wonder :V.

Into 2d as Lin Ling quotes a thing that was never said to him about making the impossible possible. 2d is indeed fantasy/the 'idealistic' world.

Finger tutting.... wait, sorry, getting distracted. But yeah, wanting an excuse to see Nice so badly that he'll fight him if it means he gets to see him.

Neither Lin Ling nor Moon fully recognising why they're sad because she's not "dead" so why should they be? It's the fact they're parting that's upsetting.

Also yiiikes, everyone back with their phones out, part of what is ostensibly a private moment, and yet, it never would be.

Back to distance between them, with Nice in the middle, immediately followed by the news confirming Lin Ling is in it for the long run. Yay visual metaphors ig.

"People will only believe things they want to believe, even if it's a lie."

People can't lie to themselves about fear -> trust vs fear back on the menu. See, I'm presuming for now that Spotlight's actually a different organisation from Nice's, but at the same time, I don't want to rule out that they're secretly the same given we already have one confirmed 'setup villain'. That said, Fear breaking Trust would presumably take down the Trust system, so in theory, there's no motivation for Lin Ling's marketing body to want this. Will keep them as an outside organisation, then. Though, possibly involving former heroes/villains who've turned against the system due to their own experiences.

Misc:

This is the first time I've realised the ending song is actually supposed to be in full English. I always presumed it was just specific lines until I saw the subs there, oops.

We never actually got an explanation for Moon's body covered in blood. I know Lin Ling thought it was a dream, but if that is the case, it's a pretty weird one to have.

Also, wondering when we'll get more crumbs about the Incident. Both episodes have referenced it thus far as a turning point for Nice.

Genuinely surprised the final shot of Lin Ling before we turned to the arc plot wasn't him looking small in the midst of the huge room. Shows love to do that stuff

gonna have a go at a tbhx liveblog. tbh, idk if I'll keep this up or if it'll fade away, but let's have a go.

context in terms of my current knowledge of the series going in:

superheroes? something about public perception dictating how they're seen and some kind of 'trust' rating

3d/2d animation - given how the other to be hero series operate I'm going to guess this is dependent on world but idk fully

I've seen 'to be hero' and 'to be heroine' so that'll also be informing some stuff here. oh! also, I'll be watching in chinese, though not sure in this case whether the japanese release gets edited down as it did for the previous series in this collection

unsubtle visuals my beloved. anyway, starting themes of the show are "everyone can be a hero" vs "the only path is to accept reality and work hard".

oooh okay nice episode title card. again, on the nose, but it's not like it *needs* to be subtle. also "41 years after commission", iseeisee.

"one day you'll be replaced by someone else" - okay, so. given one of the only spoilers I do know for this series, that's. well.

two seconds later. fingerguns out. wasn't expecting it *quite* that quickly, but comedic timing on point

"who you are is of no importance" - same thing as he was saying himself earlier, but context makes it come off pretty differently

"nice has been doing poorly ever since 'that incident'" taking notes taking notes. that'll definitely come back later

ah, belief system is largely how I'd thought it'd be? belief makes reality, essentially. "as long as we package you flawlessly" and they're having an ad guy do this. fitting.

this question is more fitting to be posed to an obsessive fan than a romantic partner ngl. oh nice, glasses blonde agrees with me

oof rip he actually knows the answer right down to the runtime. that's... kinda embarrassing. obsessive fan it is.

oh. right. okay, I forgot he'd been involved in making a load (all?) of these ads. he gets a pass but he's on thin ice

oooh the comboing 2d with 3d for the liquid and smokey effects. reminds me of arcane.

trust vs fear. another theme, methinks

so, the villains will represent a fear - in this case, being fired? makes sense. it's presented as though it's a general fear, but I expect that each fear will be relevant to lin ling in some way or another and become increasingly close to his personal fears as the show goes on....?

2d replay of 3d scene. backdrop is somewhat different now though. or rather, the lighting emphasises the poster with the shattered face and saturates out nice almost completely

not the falling imagery. I wasn't gonna make any of this about link click and I know link click doesn't have the monopoly on falling off buildings but. creator footprint.

"I hope that someday I'll be able to protect those worth protecting" noting down as more arc relevant words even if I suspect the first time around will Not go well

moon pulling lin ling out of his fear, not through any actions of her own, but through the marketable version of her he remembers

interesting how he carries through the final attack still in 2d

visual contradiction. neat.

discussing nice choosing to throw himself off a building as they're heading up to the very top of another building. topical.

yeaaah. wasn't sure exactly how it'd happen but the crimes against women discourse had me thinking she'd die. I'm... not sure if it sticks or if she "comes back" then dies again? I was kinda trying to avoid spoilers but also vaguely curious. I guess I'll find out

Some misc thoughts overall:

Visually, this show seems really strong thus far. Imagery, how it combines the different art styles, how it switches between them for emphasis. Really works

Tonally... kinda all over the place. A lot of this is presented comedically with dark undertones so it's hard to know how seriously you're *meant* to be taking things

The ending (opening) sequence is incredibly focused on a guy we've not met yet, but with visual similarities to Nice. I've managed to avoid most of the promo stuff so I don't actually have a clue who this guy is, though the chess pieces make me think potential "chessmaster" archetype?

oh right. The part about the belief system that struck me the most was the way that Lin Ling's eye colour physically changed. Currently, we're getting all the mirror visuals and seeing Lin Ling's thoughts with him as "himself". I'm curious as to how far his "becoming" Nice will go and whether he'll be able to "return". There's also been a lack so far of information whatsoever about his life prior to this. Whether he has (had?) friends or family. He didn't seem to be calling anyone when he was at the top of the tower but that doesn't mean he *doesn't* have anyone.

Lin Ling's profession as an advertising guy in the context of the trust system. He tended to be on the back end of the marketing work rather than the forefront before this, sure, but it seems super relevant to me that his job was all about public perception. Also, the sheer number of advertising posters/video ads in the backdrop at all times was overwhelming but intentional. Weirdly, am being reminded of Go Go Loser Ranger with some of it

this is actually a hard one to talk about - because, i have to say. i really don't care when it comes to other people. in fact, i LOVE hearing what other muns are up to, i love hearing small details about their day, i never mind if i see a lot of posts from the blogs i'm following. at the end of the day, i followed them for a reason.

THEN COMES ME. i worry so, so consistently about being annoying. about oversharing, about being a pain in the ass all around. i have a neurotic sense of how my blog has to be kept. i cannot have too many aesthetic posts / ooc posts without having some writing between them. i hold myself to these weird standards that i would never, ever hold other people to. it's not really healthy how much that i overthink my own presence & how i go about things, and i totally know that. at the end of the day, this is just a hobby.

i assume that this is not only referring to ooc posts, but also just posts in general. and i just have to say: i'll never complain about seeing someone too much. i just enjoy having a noisy dash & seeing posts flowing. i never care too deeply about the contents of those posts ( as long as they are not bullying or drama ). but if someone is having a fun little day out & they are liveblogging it? good for them & i am excited to hear about it. i really am just not someone who gets annoyed about the little stuff. i respect other's opinions about not wanting to see lots of posts that are not related to roleplaying & that is so valid of them !! i am just not the same.

Um. Hey, names Rin. I use they/he. Im a pokemon trainer currently living in a cabin out near Nimbasa City. My (adopted) sister Faye bullied me into making a blog to “be social” on, so here I am.

I dont really know what all to put here honestly? Im very new to all this. Im.. about 20ish? And currently live with 7 pokemon. My hobbies include training pokemon and researching their behaviors and natural habitats.

I am a Hisuian Zoroark Hybrid. Im honestly kinda scared to just put this out there, but, here we are. I dont know my exact age, and dont know whether to go by the age I was when I died or not. I was in Hisui at one point, but it’s been about a year since I’ve returned to the present.
