Cassandra Lin may not have been born with a silver spoon in her mouth, but the one she was raised with was gilded. A newborn Jane Doe left in the hospital she was born in, she was only a few months old when the Lin's adopted her. Liwei and Elizabeth Lin were New England old money, both from respectable families and looking to expand their own. They’d been trying for years, but it became apparent that Mrs. Lin was unable to conceive. After exhausting every avenue, they eventually turned to adoption, and upon meeting the doe-eyed baby they immediately fell in love, thus bringing home the newest edition to the Lin family: Cassandra.

The youngest Lin was a precocious child, becoming adept at nearly anything she set her mind to, and had the endearing charisma only possessed by children willing and eager to talk the ear off anyone who would listen. She was well liked among her peers and got along with just about anyone, as was her charm.

With the resources afforded by the Lin name, Cassandra was allowed to pursue any interests her heart desired, as her parents were loath to tell her “no”. Toys, games, a puppy for her eighth Christmas; she quickly learned that virtually anything she asked for she got. Though she wasn’t necessarily a demanding child, it wasn’t difficult for such overindulgence to spoil her. As novel as that was as a child, such coddling quickly fostered a level of apathy that grew to abandoned hobbies and interests—she was constantly chasing a feeling of wholeness that seemed always just out of reach.

In private school, she threw herself into her studies and extracurriculars. Sports, clubs, and the school paper, theater one year and debate team the next. As always, Cassandra was a bit of a jack of all trades, but it never stopped her from putting her all into whatever she set her mind to. Even with a full schedule in school and out, she always managed to find time to attend parties with her friends—some that tended to get more out of hand than most. With the lax nature of her parents’ authority, she was never reprimanded for staying out too late or coming home inebriated. Most times, they didn’t even seem to notice.

That isn’t to say her parents were entirely neglectful. They proudly attended every school show and sports event, bragging about their star daughter to their friends and colleagues. They had even more to brag about when Cassandra graduated at the top of her class with acceptance to Harvard, the school in which her alumni parents had first met.

The first years were fine, fun even. University was certainly more of a workload than high school had been, but Cassandra thrived under the pressure. She still had the reputation for being a partier, going out with friends at least once a week whenever she could put off her studies.

All it took was one night for her entire life to change. She can still remember the awful screech of metal and the flash of high beams reflected in dark animal eyes. Usually parties were close enough to walk to, but with the venue being just outside of town and the calm of a winter snowstorm settled on the streets, she and her friends had decided it would be better to drive. For once, Cassandra agreed to be designated driver, and at the end of the night as the party wound down, the group of friends had giggled and stumbled their way to Cassandra’s car, her footing only barely more steady than the rest given fresh ice along the ground. They’d laughed and blasted music on the drive home, enjoying the end to a successful night, but it took only a moment to shatter. A sideways glance to remind her friend to fasten her seatbelt, missing the deer that stepped out into the darkened road. By the time Cassandra looked up it was too late—she swerved to avoid the oblivious animal, but the icy road caused the car to spin out, and everything went black. When Cass woke up, she was in a hospital room full of flowers with her parents sitting by her side. The car had slid into a bank and wrapped itself around a tree; two of her friends were in critical condition, and the other had died on impact.

One might think the worst passed, but it seemed all of Cassandra’s luck had run out with the approaching full moon. She’d only been discharged a week and was staying with her parents when she found herself in the middle of a body horror nightmare; bones breaking and resetting in inhuman angles, hair sprouting across her body and teeth lengthening in an elongating muzzle. She was horrified and panicked, crashing through her childhood home like the near-feral creature she’d become. The only saving grace was that her parents were out of town on business, leaving nothing but herself and the items in their home to hurt. When she came to the next morning, the house was trashed, but Cassandra remembered every detailed moment of what she had done.

Immediately, she began cleaning the evidence of her lupine rampage from top to bottom, and reported the incident to her parents as a break in. While they were adamant on filing a police report, nothing had been stolen and there were no leads, and Cassandra was insistent that all she wanted to do was forget everything and move on, so her parents eventually dropped it. Things, after all, could be easily replaced.

Over the course of the following weeks, Cassandra retreated into herself. She took a break from school and grew distant from both friends and family, much to the dismay of both. The rapidly approaching full moon was instilling a sense of dread, leaving her scrambling to find somewhere isolated to wait out the night. Ultimately, she found the most realistic idea for such last minute planning would be to drive out to the wilderness, far enough away from any campers she may come across, and spend the night there. For the first few months, this worked out well enough, and soon enough she had begun enough of a routine that she felt comfortable returning to her classes, where the months began to bleed into a year. and then a year into two, and so on.

As much as she gained control over herself during her monthly shifts—she all but refused to shift outside of the full moon, still unable to reconcile the truth of her own nature—the toll the lies took weighed heavily on her. She still kept her friends (those she still had) and her family at arms’ length, not wanting them close enough to hurt again. She’d rented a small townhouse—with a soundproofed basement, just in case—and had taken to drinking most nights to avoid confronting both the memories and newly gained instincts that plagued her. Her grades took a nosedive at the worst of it, and Cassandra only managed to graduate by the skin of her teeth, so unlike the overachieving girl she had once been.

Her parents began to believe that her change in behavior was due to inner turmoil over her lack of knowledge of her birth parents. Though they did not have much information to provide, their worry pushed them to inform her that the only thing they knew of her biological parentage was that her mother was from a tiny town called Lunar Cove, not too far from their home. While in truth Cassandra was not overly concerned with this, it did bring her to think that perhaps she could learn more about her affliction if she traced her biological roots. Not too soon after, she made the decision to move to Lunar Cove, desperate to learn more.

THE AARONS 2024 - Best TV Show

The 2015 Aarons for Best TV Show had many winners that were never renominated in subsequent years - some, like Hannibal, because they ended far too soon, and some because their quality was gone in a Flash. Here are The Aarons for Best TV Show:

#10. Superman & Lois (Season 4) - CW

It clearly takes more than budget cuts to drag the Man of Steel down; in fact, Superman & Lois seemed revitalized in the wake of a battle with Doomsday. The sole remaining CW superhero series pulled no punches in its final season, which saw its heroic family go toe-to-toe with a vengeful Lex Luthor, shaking up the status quo with unexpected deaths and the reveal of significant secrets. The show’s heart was as strong as ever, grounded by the chemistry between stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch. The next person gunning for a romantic, inspirational adaptation of the character will have a high bar to clear.

#9. Batman: Caped Crusader (Season 1) - Amazon Prime

For decades, every piece of Batman media has lived in the shadows of Batman: The Animated Series; the cartoon’s noir influences and pitch-perfect voice cast are for many the definitive interpretation of the character. Caped Crusader is the closest anyone’s come to matching that greatness. The influence of Bruce Timm, a producer on both shows, is unmistakable in the show’s dark psychological tone. A 1930’s setting, reinvented villains, and more serialized storytelling create riveting differences from his original work. Hamish Linklater commendably fills the shoes of the late Kevin Conroy while making the role his own; that’s one of many ways Batman is more than just an echo of its past.

#8. Ted (Season 1) - Peacock

I can barely believe it myself, but Seth MacFarlane’s prequel to his film series of the same name is delightful. With no expense spared in bringing its star to life, every episode of the nostalgic 90s-set sitcom is stuffed with hilarious hijinks and surprising soul. The talking teddy bear certainly wasn’t softened at all by the switch to the small screen, but he is now propped up by a lovably dysfunctional family adding pathos to every irreverent antic. Finding the right mix between juvenile humor and meaningful character growth made Ted into a source of comfort last year.

#7. Interior Chinatown (Season 1) - Hulu

Interior Chinatown turned television inside out last year. The streaming series could perhaps be seen as the spiritual successor to previous Aarons-winner Kevin Can F**k Himself, poking fun at police procedurals in the same way the latter skewered sitcoms. The meta humor is amusing on its own, but Interior Chinatown uses it in service of a larger mission: calling attention to the types of characters that are often relegated to the margins by the media we consume. In contrast, with Jimmy O. Yang, Chloe Bennet, Ronny Chieng, and Diana Lin sharing its spotlight, Interior packs itself with as much talent as it can contain.  

#6. Smiling Friends (Season 2) - Adult Swim

Like all the bizarre shows with which Adult Swim floods the airways, Smiling Friends will really only be welcomed by viewers on the same wavelength. Those who appreciate its surreal narratives and mis-matched animation styles however will find the characters readily fulfilling their stated goal of spreading happiness. Despite the short episode lengths, the frenetic pacing of its absurdist jokes means viewers have plenty to sink their teeth into. Whether the Friends were helping a 64-bit video game icon find his second act or a stop-motion snowman overcome an existential crisis, every episode ended with its considered audience grinning from ear to ear. 

#5. The Penguin (Miniseries) - HBO

From Kraven the Hunter to Joker: Folie à Deux, many supervillain spin-offs failed to take flight in 2024; they would have been wise to take a lesson from The Penguin. The spinoff of The Batman continued the grim and gritty mood of its predecessor, earning rightful comparisons to fellow HBO hit The Sopranos with its character-driven mob story. The feather in its cap was letting its villain be a villain; the series effectively waddled a line between generating sympathy for The Penguin and disgust at his decisions. The miniseries works as a standalone tale, but will make it all the more gratifying if those actions come home to roost in future Batman sequels.

#4. Shōgun (Season 1) - FX

Shōgun has been conquering the award circuit since its release for good reason. The scale of the historical epic, which follows rival factions vying for power in an accurately recreated 17th century Japan, is one not commonly seen on the small screen outside of Game of Thrones. The extravagant sets and costumes are a beauty to behold, but Shōgun’s secret weapon is matching the scope of its production with the magnitude of its intimate moments. One couldn’t ask for finer actors than Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, and Anna Sawai for a war waged as much in words as on the battlefield.

#3. My Adventures with Superman (Season 2) - Adult Swim

It’s not a bird, not a plane, but another Superman show soaring into the top ten. My Adventures with Superman improved by leaps and bounds from an already astonishing first season through strengthening its supporting cast and uniting them against an imposing enemy. The anime-inspired series, which has always worn its heart on its sleeve, propelled its stunning action sequences with those pure emotions; each punch was empowered by the camaraderie of its cast. Superman and Lois’s continuing relationship was as cute as always, but the second season spread the love further with an adorable courtship between Supergirl and Jimmy Olsen; you will believe that sparks can fly.

#2. The Sympathizer (Miniseries) - HBO

It may sound counterintuitive, but The Sympathizer made for agreeable television by challenging its audience’s compassion. Acclaimed Oldboy director Park Chan-wook sets the tone in the first few episodes: the saga of a North Vietnamese spy living in America, adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer-Prize winning novel, may be tongue-in-cheek, but it doesn’t hide from heavier themes of trauma, war, and identity. Hoa Xuande as The Captain is a compelling lead; his charm and commitment to his cause keeps audiences second-guessing. Robert Downey Jr. also stars in multiple roles; that may be the hook that gets viewers watching, but it’s the observations on courage and cultural assimilation that will earn their loyalty. 

AND THE BEST TV SHOW OF 2024 IS...

#1. Evil (Season 4) - Paramount+

It brings me no pleasure to report that Evil’s reign is over, but all good things must come to an end. With enough warning and an extended episode count, creators Robert and Michelle King were able to bring their series to a divine denouement. The final season reaped the benefits of seeds sowed throughout its run, paying off plotlines like the birth of the Antichrist and the simmering romantic tension between Dr. Kristen Bouchard and Father David Acosta. The show no doubt deserved to go on for many more seasons, but by keeping its focus on its character arcs, Evil allowed viewers to depart in peace.

SwynWrimo: Character #Inspo

Or: 5 characters I've RPed as in the past that have become part of Martin's muse here in SwynRP Warning: I have mostly been in Marauders Era HP RPs!

1. Remus "Moony" Lupin (Andrew Garfield FC): Remus Lupin was one of those characters that has stuck with me over many many years. He's a character I returned to because I loved how studious yet rebellious he could be. He had this big secret about him (werewolf) and a smaller one that he didn't know how to share (gay). I think that this resonated a lot with me as a queer individual. Martin is also very studious (he had to be with the family he came from) and has to keep a vital part of his existence a secret (Mundus) and he was in the closet for the majority of his life. My Remus muse also came from a family where the father was a strict person insisting on perfection and hiding away any imperfection that Martin also holds. Thankfully, much like Remus did, Martin has been able to find a core group of people upon which he can rely and truly be himself.

2. Edward "Ted" Tonks (Brett Dalton FC): Ended up in a romance that was greatly looked down upon by their families! Family-Oriented (Hi little baby Tonks)! Liked to bake/cook/be a house husband for those he could provide for. He was also supplementary for those who were actually in the thick of the fight. Martin was brought in to play a part in the Knights plot but he was not strictly a Knight himself. No, he joined up to play a part in Merlin's legacy so he was there supplying mostly potions and his ability to research. He knew how to fight, could defend himself if need be, but he was more focused on what this was doing to keep his family (Mim) safe. And since then his focus has been on what he deems his family (Mim, Ren, Ian, Elsa, Isaac, Amity, Sorrel).

3. Dorcas "Doe" Meadowes (Chloe Bennet FC): Doe was one of those characters who was always stronger than she thought she could be. A bit of a damsel in distress until put under the wire. She eventually grew to be so strong that Voldemort himself had to find and kill her, though, so she grew into her own and I was so proud of getting her to that strength I knew she could hold. Martin isn't entirely there yet but he's grown into himself so much since I first picked him up. Between coming out, standing against his father, working with his sister to stand against the whole Coven (piece by piece), and even marrying the one he loves without fear of what that will say for them. I just adore his strength (and know Ren does 😉) and I'm proud of how far he's come.

4. Peter "Piglet" Jones (Tarjei Sandvik Moe FC): Piglet was my softest of boys. This child was always knitting, crocheting, baking, and even loved to play piano. Piglet wanted nothing more than to help take care of everyone around him. He started his own bakery to bring smiles to everyone in town's faces (and sold his knitwear/crochet pieces on the side). It wasn't always easy, many hurdles were always thrown his way, but ultimately it didn't matter how many times he was knocked down because he would pick himself back up and keep being kind. Martin has all the reason in the world to be unkind but isn't. Martin has all the reason in the world to be arrogant but isn't. Martin has had every chance for the world to turn him bitter and cold and yet he continues to choose grace and forgiveness and warmth to a world that has rarely been kind in return. He bakes because it makes people smile. He started his shoppe to help people who may not have access to the supplies they needed, to educate those around him, and make tourists' faces light up in excitement. He is soft, but not without prior pain.

5. Peter "Wormtail" Pettigrew (Jesse Eisenberg FC): Okay, this one might seem like an odd pull but hear me out! Peter was cunning in the ways he pulled people together. He didn't like to stand out in the pack but he was always calculating something. Whether that was the danger of a prank he'd pull with his friends or how to best avoid detection in the war he was so smart that it could be deadly. Peter was good with people in a way that most of my characters haven't been: he was a hustler. Playing Wormtail was always a chess game and Peter wanted to come out on top, even if that meant others would suffer for it. Now, again, this seems like it doesn't have anything to do with Martin, but listen. Martin's been taught how to lead a coven since the moment he entered the world. His head has been filled with knowledge of magic and the world around him. His father is a politician, as his was before him and so on and so forth. Martin, if he didn't care so much about those around him, could absolutely be that person. He is even willing to be so cutthroat if the situation arose that threatened those he loves. It's lucky for everyone that Martin turned out kind or he would have been Peter.
