You tell yourself, you’ve faced worse. The first time you fought death was the first breath you took, into lungs that weren’t ready, in a body too small and fragile to survive on its own. You struggled for days in a vessel adrift between our stars, an insignificant speck of heat in our cold universe, determined to burn as bright as a sun. When your mother finally held you for the first time, she showed you to us and asked if we were what you were in such a hurry to see for yourself. You have always been ours. You were ours when your father sang you to sleep while we gleamed through the shutters. You were ours when you rose for the first time on unsteady legs because you wanted to see us. You were ours when you felt our power come to life under your skin and understood that we are part of you in ways you’d never imagined. How many times did you palm the glow of dark matter in your hand and imagine you were one of us? But no matter how bright you burn now, it won’t be enough to save you. There is fear, now, but you swallow it back.    The second time you fought death it wasn’t your life you were fighting for. Back in June, I was doing the hug ask game, and @flyingwolf29 gave me a prompt with a panicked "I'm glad you're okay" hug, and I don't know what the fuck happened and how it happened, but that story grew to 8k+ words, and so here we are, 2.5 months later. Hope you like it, friend! 😅 Huge, huge thanks to @shepards-space-oddessy for editing and @unfair-water-plane & @gemsbokk for reading this thing, you guys are the nicest and deserve your own Star of Terra award.

"I don't like this," Kaidan says and hears Cortez sigh. 

It annoys him of course, but Kaidan is far more concerned with Shepard and the look on his face that Kaidan reads as "Of course you are": tenderness hidden between the layers of sarcasm in which he cocoons himself as usual. 

"It's at least fifty years old!" Kaidan continues. "We can't be sure it works properly!" 

"Well, let's find out." Shepard shrugs and, unsurprisingly, it looks nonchalant. It also makes Kaidan want to strangle him, but instead he pulls out the big guns. 

"I'm not letting you go in there without backup," he adds and hears his voice wobble a bit. 

Fuck if it sounds pathetic and unprofessional, and something he definitely shouldn't do in front of Cortez, but at least he's rewarded with the fascinating sight of Shepard's defenses cracking. For a brief moment, the look on his face is of pure tenderness, and Kaidan feels that change with his whole body. The triumph of knowing he is the cause of it rolls through him, but it's short-lived.

"Don't think we have a choice," Shepard says, back to business. "I'm the only one who knows how to pilot this piece of junk. And if we don't find whatever fried our engines and is still jamming our signals, we'd better start looking for food. Because, you know, after a week or so without it, you gentlemen might start to look very tasty."

"Shepard..." Kaidan sighs. 

"What?" There is a shadow in the left corner of Shepard's mouth, the dimple begins to show, and Kaidan is weak for his dimples. He sighs again. This is exactly why you shouldn't sleep with your crewmates.

"I know how to fish!" Cortez suddenly interjects.

"That's the spirit, Lieutenant!" Shepard claps him on the shoulder and looks back at Kaidan. "Come on, Alenko, you're one of the best engineers I know. I'm sure we can fix this thing. Just tell me and Cortez what to do."

"This is about your life…" Kaidan says, knowing full well that he has already lost. 

"And I trust you with it," Shepard says in his private 'John' voice, because that's how he is, even Kaidan's complete defeat is not enough for him.

Mass Effect confession

I'm a bit of a Talibrations shipper

I can already hear rabid Garrus Fangirls smashing away at their keyboards, but IDC. I mean, yeah the confession comes outta nowhere and I didn't really like it that much at first. But over the years, it's kinda really grown on me. Not sure why, I just really like the appeal. Besides, I never really did their romances that much anyway. I like them, but I'm more of a MShenko and FShiara guy myself. Tali and Garrus are my bros, not my hoes.

And no, I don't wanna hear about how Garrus can 'kill her with a cough'. So could Shepard, and Tali only came outta that with just a fever. And it doesn't even have to be sexual. It's perfectly okay to just have a romantic relationship. I also don't wanna hear anything about Cannon Romances. There are none. The only cannon Mass Effect pairing (when it comes to Shepard anyway) is the pairing you want in your own story. Who gives a shit what I'm doing in my playthroughs? Just do your own FFS.

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

sorry lads i just can't get into talibrations (or shalibrations, on the same vein). talibrations feels very pair-the-spares and "a guy and a girl can't just be friends" to me, and no you can't point at citadel dlc as proof of it when it released a good ways after the main game and bioware had already gotten to hear fan reaction to it. and then adding shepard to the mix just. idk dude i just can't see it. neither garrus nor tali feels like the type to be down for poly to me (and tbf most of the fic i see for it writes neither one very ic but especially not garrus. he would not talk like that.) and it just ends up feeling shoehorned

6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?

okay tbh ive gone back and forth on both shenko and shakarian due to the fans, i started out generally enjoying both, fans being nucking futs made me hate them, found some mutuals and friends who are sane abt them and made me like them again, then went into a big fandom server and oh BOY that was a mistake. swung around to liking them again tho (left the server and listened to my Good Taste Mutuals. never join fandom servers lads) so we're doing okay on that front i think, even if i still prefer to put garrus with other characters.

on a different fandom note tho over in transformers land fandom won me over on starscream/wheeljack. wheeljack is the only person in post-war cybertron who's actually fucking nice to starscream and genuinely wants to work with him and help him succeed and make things better and pull him out of the cycle of abuse megatron and later windblade were putting him through. and starscream himself says wheeljack is different and he can actually be honest and himself with him. i was prying myself out of [REDACTED] at the time and also camping on starscream/metalhawk rarepair hill so i was kinda Ah, No abt starjack and fandom managed to talk me around. tho i think many of them should also perhaps consider the very big brain move of starscream/wheeljack/metalhawk just hear me out okay--

12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

mmm i know leviathan dlc isn't popular for both "ruining" the mystery of the reapers and i think also the gameplay, but i really enjoy it for exactly those reasons, i really like what the leviathans add and i thought the atmosphere was really well done plus actually getting to investigate and follow clues and not just "go here shoot this" felt like what spectre work is supposed to be

also frankly i know the virmire survivor not following you in me2 is suuuuper unpopular among the type of fans who are active in large fandom servers (and especially among a specific brand of mshenko shipper, usually 40+yo women who brag about only making gay men ocs and are very yaoi brained despite thinking they're too good and woke to use the word yaoi) but it makes sense and it's a good reality check for shepard. shepard needs MORE people to tell them "dude what the fuck is wrong with you, no i absolutely won't help you" for working with cerberus actually

23. Unpopular character you love?

i suspect my brand gives me away here so pivoting away from the obvious, [gently tucks sparky and des into bed with a lil kiss]

honestly i actually. really enjoy balak. yes yes genocidal maniac yes he's evil and i enjoy fucking up his day but i dont like him in a "he did nothing wrong he deserves to live and join shepard uwu" kinda way, i like him for the alternate perspective on the batarians he presents, i like what he has to say and how he's kind of the only one putting forward the other side of the alliance-hegemony argument. yes he's doing it by pointing an asteroid at a planet and hitting it with a bat but that's bioware

like he makes a really solid fucking argument, we otherwise NEVER hear anything from the batarian perspective, it's all from the alliance's perspective and how meeeaaaan the hegemony are for attacking them for noooo reaaasoooon. when then you look at the galaxy map and oh the alliance is literally setting up shop not just on the hegemony's front lawn but practically inside the damn house. the batarians were already living in a lot of the space the alliance is trying to claim! they do have a right to defend their colonies! yes they do war crimes but so does the alliance, neither side is wholly innocent and pure (tho yes the guys who do slavery are definitely More Guilty) despite literally every other aspect of the narrative telling us the alliance are just innocent little babies who've never hurt anybody and everyone's so mean to them

unfortunately this perspective IS given to us by a genocidal maniac launching an asteroid at a large colony so we're primed to dismiss everything he says, and what he tells shepard is never discussed again or examined in any real way. because the original trilogy is ultimately still military propaganda and a power fantasy. and also every time i say "the batarians have a right to be upset actually" i get accused of supporting human trafficking and shit (not joking). so y'know. anyway balak does makes some points 2k25

N7 Month, 2023 - Day 18: Pack

Was stumped. A thin little angsty pre-relationship mshenko drabble about a mourning Kaidan after Alchera.

The debrief with the Citadel Council had been bad enough, but the debriefing under Admiral Hackett on Arcturus had completely wrung out the last of Kaidan’s patience. He and Joker had been the last to see Council Spectre and Alliance Commander Shepard alive. As ranking officer, Kaidan was getting most of the attention.

Search and survey missions above Alchera had come back negative for any other survivors. Many of the deceased crew had not been recovered, and neither had Shepard.

A burial in space. Kaidan wondered if that would be what Shepard would have wanted. He’d been in and out of meetings for the last 9 hours, telling the same story again and again. He wasn’t allowed to speak with Joker, or anyone from the Normandy. The isolation had galvanized his grief into such a thin point, he wasn’t even aware he still felt the prick of it. How many times could you describe the last moment of your Commander’s life before it became just another story, no added emotional weight. Just recounting the facts.

The small apartment he kept for himself on Arcturus Station felt foreign to him when he finally got back that evening. The Normandy, it’s claustrophobic sleeper pods, had begun to feel like home. He stripped off his uniform and lifted his shirt over his head, sat on the stiff foam mattress and sighed. He’d had friends on the Normandy, pretty good friends who he’d been through hard times with, and they were dead now. Too cold and too small in space to be recovered.

That was one thing he hadn’t gotten a chance to say in all the debriefs: he had lost friends. He had lost Shepard. And the loss was killing him. In a dim corner of the room sat Kaidan’s old brown pack: one of the straps sewn on haphazardly, numerous patches covering holes in the canvas. The sight of it forced a heavy huff out of him.

He walked over, picked up the pack carefully. The zipper stuck, but Kaidan knew how to pull it open anyway. There were civilian clothes inside: just a couple t-shirts, some slacks. There was a pair of swim trunks, sandals. In a separate bag was a menagerie of toiletries—cologne, hair products,--things he didn’t get to use aboard a starship.

The bag was packed for vacation. For shore leave, with Shepard. The two had agreed to spend shore leave on the Citadel together, and Kaidan—ever the boy scout—had packed ahead of their sweep of Alchera, it was supposed to be their final engagement before the well-earned break. Kaidan realized only now, looking at his ready pack, how excited he had been for the opportunity.

At the bottom of the pack was a data-pad: books Shepard had asked Kaidan to recommend to him. It was a task Kaidan had thrown himself at with unexpected fervor. Now that Shepard was dead… he couldn’t remember why.

He pulled the zipper back around, dropped the pack with a thud onto the deck, and returned to the bed. He didn’t need anything out of the pack. Didn’t want to smell like fine cologne, couldn’t stomach the soft civilian clothes, didn’t need to style his hair. All of that could wait, maybe forever.

He lay back in bed, telling himself “not forever.” The grief would pass away some day soon, and he’d be back to everything-as-usual.

The pack sat there in the corner for years.

Throw-Back Thursday: Falling Together 1/1, mShenko for Shenko Summer 2023

Going through stuff and realising - I never posted my gift for the incedible @atoastbw here on tumblr XD My bad.

Title: Falling Together 1/1 Fandom: Mass Effect Pairing: John Shepard / Kaidan Alenko Rating: NC-17 Summary: All Shepard wanted to do was explain himself to Kaidan after the war and hang out with some beer, dinner and a movie. Kaidan, on the other hand, has a very different idea.

Shepard tried to ignore the little flip his stomach did when he heard the customary swoosh of the front door to his apartment on the Citadel opening. It had been almost two years since he and Kaidan had last seen each other, and they hadn’t parted on the friendliest of terms. Staring at each other down the barrel of a gun didn’t leave much room for affection, and sending Kaidan away after he’d stated quite clearly that he’d like to serve on the Normandy again also hadn’t done anything to improve their relationship. In fact, it probably did the exact opposite, and the longer Shepard didn’t hear anything from his former lieutenant, the more he started to believe that he’d managed to piss Kaidan off for good.

The message Kaidan had sent him before they took Cerberus HQ had managed to put his mind at ease a little, but not completely.

To every other person who would’ve read that message, it might’ve seemed innocent enough, but Shepard wasn’t every other person.

I just wanted to say that, no matter what went down between us, I still consider my time on the Normandy to be one of the most important experiences of my life.

No matter what went down between them. Most people would think that Kaidan was solely talking about Horizon and the accusations that he flung at Shepard without thinking about it; maybe about the slow rebuilding of trust between them after he’d been injured on Mars.

Deep down, though, Shepard knew that Kaidan hadn’t just written about Horizon or Mars.

The entire time Liara speaks, Shepard watches her through steepled fingers from a seat on the couch in the apartment she still hasn’t called home. The apartment itself had belonged to Benezia, though none of her things remain. They few that had personal significance she’d packed in boxes that are now stacked neatly in the back of the spare bedroom while she decides what to do with them. In the meantime, the man who’d shot her sits in her living room as an invited guest.

She sits across from him in an oversized chair. The tea she poured him slowly grows cold, the plate of luxed muscle drops remains untouched. She never had been able to convince Shepard to give asari cuisine a fair shot.

She tells him everything.

It depends. I have in past, I do on occasion these days, but it's very rare because I'm just not that comfortable writing it. I tend to stress a lot more when writing smut, too.

Several, actually. Most of mine are crossovers with historical time periods rather than fandoms (though there are a couple) ME/World of Darkness, ME/WWII, ME/ME Andromeda, a couple of ME/Celtic Ireland, and a new ME/American Revolution idea. I have a couple ideas for ME/DAO crossovers, but have yet to start them.

A couple small, old ones.

Translated, no. Podcasted, yes.

Yes. In 2022, @happychica and I began writing Caleb Shepard in her Modern ME series, The Town of Norman in the story, As Luck Would Have It

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

mshenko and femshenko. Okay, who am I kidding, anyone and Kaidan - Alenkoats (with Coats), Reylenko (with Reyes Vidal), Parasenko (with Gianna Parasini). Another very high fave of mine (because of Caleb and Kaidan) is Abboats - Abby Williams/Major Coats.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I would love to bring all the hundreds of ideas I have drabbled on (but not shared), or started but haven't gotten back to, but it probably won't happen. For now, I just take it a day at a time and hope the muses will keep inspiring me so I can get more done.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Plotting.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Just about everything else. I have moments where I sort of go 'zen' and can get good things going, but it isn't consistent for me, and I wish it was. Still, I'm constantly working on them, so I hope I have at least improved them somewhat over the years and will continue to do so.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I have done, to a point, with fics, but not usually more than an expression here or there. If I do, it's usually French because I have the most experience with it.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

This is like asking me to pick which of my children is my favorite!!!

(Okay, so I only have one kid - but I have TONS of stories!!!)

For now I will say anything with Caleb Shepard. He has been such a wonderful learning experience for me and continues to be, and I love how his world has been turning out - past, present and future. Can't wait to share it all!

Eeeeeee, I am so glad you like it!! I had so much fun laying this out and putting it together. Every time I make a book I discover a new set of skills I need to acquire in order to do what I want to do, and this was no exception. As a result I have now developed an obsession with metallic paper. XD

Kaidan, Miranda, Legion, and Tali (and mShenko and fShawson) are all characters and pairings I adore, so it was such a treat to make this.

I laughed seeing this truly cute OTT (One True Tank - so real, I love the Mako do much) zip bag, having opened that first after the card. Then I was completely blown away by the absolutely stunning sketchbook you bound for me as part of the @masseffectholidaycheer exchange! What an incredible and fun craft. My partner and I were flipping through it just going, "Whoa, no way! A custom, handmade book! Unreal!" And the Renegade / Paragon interrupt symbols in the corners of the internal pages? SO good.

 “And who the fuck are you to care?” Patriarch grunted, crossing his arms. His armor was a similar style to Wrex’s, Kaidan noted - he was pretty sure that meant this Patriarch was similarly old. It wasn’t as popular a style with relatively younger krogans.

 Shep crossed her arms in mirror to him, eyes glinting in the lackluster light of the back room. “Someone willing to be associated with an old bastard like you.”

 Kaidan’s eyes snapped to Shep, equal measures horrified, frustrated, and baffled. This was starting to feel like a worse alternative to nursing a drink at the poison bar.
