One of the most delightful pieces of information I learned from world war 1 pilots’ memoirs and diaries is that they liberally referred to close guys as their “boyfriend” which could both literally mean a boy who was a friend (though intended to mean a closer relationship than acquaintance) but also was used as quite literally the modern term which is clear from contexts where pilots would tease a flight leader about his “boyfriend” when it was clear he was showing favoritism etc. But all this and MUCHH more was considered perfectly normal socially despite the fact modern viewers would be convinced squadrons were giant harems lol.

This is not the least of delightful things from WWI pilot circles if you wonder why no movies have been made of them it’s because the levels of gay are off the ever-loving charts lol

LIFE OF AN AIRLINE PILOT

I have been leaving for so long, I have forgotten how to stay.

The sky calls, and I go—always, without hesitation,

without promises, without goodbyes that mean anything at all.

Man, was my last life update a week and a half ago? Lots has happened

Im out in northern manitoba with a flying job! I'm flying a float plane for a small company and living with three other pilots in a two story house. I've done about 4 flights so far but already took passengers today!

It's been a ton of fun. Everyone I work with is awesome and my days aren't too demanding. I've been trying to be ready by 9am but I probably dont have to be ready quite so early, and we're done by 5pm most of the time. A couple evenings we've gone out fishing after work and had trout for dinner

I've learned to drive an ATV and a golf cart and I've flown a shocking amount of cargo around. I'm determined to catch a fish this summer.

We'll see how crazy the flying gets but I was also told it should be quiet during the summer and it'll really pick up in the fall when the moose hunts happen. Hopefully that just means I'm somewhat experienced by then and have a better understanding of the local places we fly into.

Aircraft can actually have their own ‘personalities’!

While all planes under the same category are obviously designed and engineered to be the same, some factors like age, maintenance upkeep and overall performance can change that (primarily because not all planes are doing the same thing/have had the same life, even if they’re the same models..)

When I flew 7CG, (a C172) he actually had a yoke that, upon landing, would shake around.. it didn’t affect the movement for some reason and it just couldn’t be fixed by maintenance.

The plane I currently fly, 50J (A C150) has weird fuel gages. Every so often her fuel gauges ( that indicate temperature and pressure) spin around wildly, especially on takeoff. Since she has a manual panel you can just give them a thump with your fist and it fixes it. She also has a slightly larger air intake than most 150s due to age, so she has a distinct engine scream.

Definitions:

Yoke - The ‘steering wheel’ of an airplane, controls the ailerons of the aircraft and allows the plane to go left and right.

Gauges - Instruments on the console of the aircraft that reads information, in this case, fuel to the pilot. A manual panel are instruments that have mechanical bits and parts rather than a glass, or an electronic console.

Air intake - An opening, usually on the fronts or the sides of a plane that allow air to cool the engine whilst in flight. With most small aircraft, they’re right behind and underneath the propeller.

I love making mech pilots who have something fundamentally wrong with them. Pilots who stare at you for too long without blinking because they forget they aren't hidden behind layers of metal. Pilots that twitch and flinch at any sound outside of the cockpit. Pilots who refuse to talk to anyone apart from their beloved Handler. Pilots who instinctively curl their hands as if touching controls that aren't there. Pilots who will do anything to get back into their mech - their real body.

Pilots who will never be anything other than a pilot because the bond with their mech and their constant exposure to combat has shattered their mind.

As of the end of my shift, I currently have no work. We wrote me out of the upcoming schedule because we weren't sure if I was about to be called out to my next job suddenly but that job also hasn't called me out yet. So I have two jobs and no work.

Which is mostly fine as long as something happens at some point. I do fully believe they will need a pilot before the end of the season so I think I will get called out eventually. Plus, I can take any extra shifts from my current job in the meantime. It all just means Im gonna be on a limited budget for a while.

Im still anxious about the next job, gonna be strongly paranoid that I'll get sent home after a month again. Im glad Ive had this break in between to chill though, I think that's helped me mentally recover from the last whirlwind situation.
