How Wi-Fi Locks Enhance Security for North Reading Residents ?
In an era where home security is more advanced and accessible than ever, Wi-Fi lock are revolutionizing the way North Reading residents protect their homes. Unlike traditional locks, which can be prone to lost keys and lock-picking, Wi-Fi locks offer a smarter, more convenient approach to security. Here’s how installing a Wi-Fi lock can provide enhanced safety, control, and peace of mind for homeowners in North Reading.

1. Real-Time Access Control from Anywhere
One of the standout benefits of Wi-Fi locks is their ability to give homeowners control over their locks remotely. Whether you're at work, on vacation, or simply out running errands, you can lock and unlock your doors from anywhere using a smartphone app. For North Reading residents with busy schedules, this added convenience ensures that your home is secure even when you’re not there.
The ability to check your lock status in real-time means you never have to worry about forgetting to lock the door when you leave. And, if a family member or trusted friend needs to enter your home while you're away, you can unlock the door remotely or provide temporary access codes.
2. Customizable Access Codes for Enhanced Security
Wi-Fi locks eliminate the need for traditional keys, which can easily be lost, stolen, or copied. Instead, you can assign unique PIN codes to family members, guests, or service professionals who need access to your home. With the ability to create and delete codes instantly, North Reading residents can maintain tight control over who enters their property.
For example, if you're expecting a delivery or need to let in a contractor for a repair, you can issue a temporary access code that expires after a set period. This feature ensures that your home remains secure after the task is completed, without needing to exchange physical keys.
3. Increased Protection Against Break-Ins
Traditional locks can be vulnerable to lock-picking or bumping techniques used by burglars. Wi-Fi locks, however, come with advanced encryption technology that makes them much more difficult to tamper with. For North Reading homeowners, this extra layer of security helps prevent unauthorized entry and keeps your property safe.
Many Wi-Fi locks also include built-in alarms that trigger when someone tries to force entry. Some models will even send instant notifications to your smartphone if any suspicious activity is detected, giving you real-time updates on your home’s security.
4. Integration with Smart Home Systems
Wi-Fi locks can easily integrate with other smart home devices, creating a seamless and highly efficient home security system. North Reading residents who already have smart doorbells, security cameras, or alarm systems can connect their Wi-Fi locks to monitor all aspects of their home’s security from a single app.
For instance, if your Wi-Fi lock is integrated with a smart doorbell, you can receive a notification when someone approaches your door, view a live video feed, and unlock the door—all from your phone. This level of integration offers a complete home security solution that allows you to monitor, control, and protect your home from virtually anywhere.
5. Activity Logs for Monitoring Entry and Exit
Another valuable feature of Wi-Fi locks is the ability to keep track of who enters and exits your home. The app associated with your Wi-Fi lock typically logs all activity, showing you a detailed history of when each access code was used. For North Reading residents with children or elderly family members, this can offer peace of mind by ensuring that loved ones arrive home safely.
This log can also be beneficial for monitoring hired help, such as house cleaners or dog walkers. You’ll always know exactly when they entered and left your home, adding an extra layer of accountability.
6. Convenience Without Compromising Security
The convenience of keyless entry is undeniable, especially for North Reading homeowners who often juggle multiple responsibilities. With a Wi-Fi lock, there’s no need to carry around keys or worry about being locked out of your home. Whether you're returning from a run or bringing in groceries, you can unlock the door with a simple tap on your phone or by entering a PIN code.
More importantly, Wi-Fi locks ensure that convenience doesn’t come at the cost of security. Advanced encryption, customizable access codes, and real-time monitoring work together to provide an exceptionally secure solution that traditional locks simply can't match.
Conclusion
Wi-Fi locks offer North Reading residents a modern, convenient, and highly secure way to protect their homes. With features like remote access control, customizable PIN codes, and real-time monitoring, these smart locks provide peace of mind for homeowners who want to stay in control of their home’s security—no matter where they are.

Generations, chapter 4.
Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three
The shed was warm from the afternoon heat and dim enough to make them feel blind at first. It had been nearly a year since Anna-Lucia was last inside, and as she blinked sight back into her eyes, looked around curiously to see how much her dad's retreat had changed. In her childhood, Andrew's inner sanctum had always been a place of fascination and a touch of mystery.
The shed was smaller than it appeared from the outside. As a girl, she'd dreamed of a secret hidey-hole in the walls, but had never found one. There was only the old storm shelter underneath. The room was cleaner than she remembered. Andrew must have been dusting regularly; it was nearly as clean as the house. The back of the shed faced the east. The south wall was unremarkable, holding a series of antique farm implements. The north wall as taken up by a work bench, fastened directly into the wall. At the corners, drawers or storage boxes stood beneath, and in the middle, a row of swivel stools with cracking vinyl tops. The workbench was covered in electronic equipment, all powered down, dark and silent, and completely dust free. Radios, headphones, a few morse code keyers, coils of antenna cable and unassembled pieces of antenna frames like the one on the shed's roof, notepads, three ring binders peeling with age, laughably out of date laptops and their chargers, neatly coiled next to them. Every cord and wire and piece lay neatly coiled and stacked, silent. On one end stood a neat stack of equipment cases, leaning up against the corner. On the wall above the workbench hung maps of every size and description, of the world, the United States, Europe, Africa, a detailed hand-drawn layout of Vatican City and its surrounding streets. A few maps had bright plastic push pins stuck in them at apparently random points. There was a complete absence of labels, legends, or notes.
Dad had been busy. Anna-Lucia briefly, uneasily, wondered how, when one of the major dinner table gripes she had endured over the last ten years was about the increasingly restrictive laws and ever-more limited privileges for hams.
The trapdoor lay in the plain sight near the plain back wall, "Storm Shelter" emblazoned in tall black letter below the heavy pull handle. This was the old shelter, that no longer met official safety regulations.
Taking it all in had only taken a moment. "Hurry," Liz said at her elbow, rubbing her own eyes in the sudden gloom. Anna-Lucia strode forward and heaved the remarkably heavy trap door up. It clanged with a ringing thumb against the back wall, and down below, someone swore.
"Uncle George?" Liza called softly.
"Jehosaphat, kid, you scared the soup out of me. Get down here!"
"Close it behind you," Andrew grumbled, his voice muffled.
A stout wooden ladder was shoved up through the trapdoor hole and leaned against the edge. Liza went down first, unhesitating, swinging her messenger-style bag securely behind her, and Anna-Lucia, more cautious of the drop, followed gingerly.
Landing on the concrete floor, she squeezed her eyes against the sudden flare of lights as a long overhead flickered on with a twanging hum. A meaty hand clapped her on the shoulder, and she turned to see George, his other arm wrapping Liza in a tight hug. She squeezed him back and he let her go, just in time for her father to swoop in with a bear hug.
"Dad!" Liza choked, with not quite enough air to laugh. "You'll crush me!"
"Welcome home," Andrew said, releasing her, and their eyes were bright in the fluorescent light.
"I wish I was home," Liza said gently, reaching for her bag. "But I'm here on work."
Andrew stilled. His eyes flicked to Anna-Lucia, who tried to smile, but it came as a grimace, and then to George, who looked like an exuberant dancer who'd just run up against a wall.
Liza pulled the bundle of letters out of her bag. "It's Jude."
In silence, Andrew took them, slid off the rubber band, dropping it into a dish of them on the work table against the wall, and sat down heavily in the old metal folding chair behind him.
Liza turned away with a resolute air, giving him a semblance of privacy. "Uncle George, is Uncle Kevin here?"
"He's out at the pond. Should I call him?"
"Not yet. I need you first."
"What's the word?"
"Dark honey."
George nodded. "Messages?"
"Yes."
Anna-Lucia stared. Was this really happening right in front of her?
As if they'd heard her thoughts, Liza and George turned to her as one, still frozen at the foot of the ladder, Liza's hand halfway in her bag. "Are you ready for this?" Liza asked. She looked over her shoulder. "Dad? Is she ready?"
"She only got here last night. This is our first chance to really talk."
"I can't believe I didn't realize," Anna-Lucia said softly, self-recrimination building rapidly as pressurized magma. "My God. How did I not know?"
"You didn't want to see, so you didn't see," Liza said gently. "And as long as you were here, to stay, estate heir presumptive..." she trailed off. Of course. As long as Anna-Lucia was going to be the face of the family assets, she should be as clean as possible. She hadn't wanted to see, and they had protected her. Until six months ago.
"But now I'm in the city," she said slowly. "And there is no... clean face."
"That's about the size of it," George agreed. "Are you ready?"
"Do I have to take an oath or something?"
"You're family, Anna-Lucia," her father said heavily. "But you'll be speaking to Father Nicholas tonight anyway."
Anna-Lucia tried to process this, but she was all calm, blank waters inside. "What will I do?"
"Same as always. You went in to the nursing home prepared to save lives, if you could. And you'll go back to it. With your eyes open. And I have a contact for you."
Anna-Lucia looked at Liza, accusing in spite of herself. "You're not really a reporter."
A ghost of her sister's usual smile crossed her face. "Of course I'm a reporter. The question is who I'm reporting to. I'm also a courier."
"Messages?" George asked again.
"Oh, right." Recalled to herself, she pulled a thin manila envelope folded in half out of her bag and passed it to George. "What's the word?"
"Good harvest this year."
"Looks like it," Liza agreed, and let him take the packet.
Understanding continued to dawn. "You coordinate from the inside," she said to George. "The jailbreaks. The underground epistles."
He nodded, watching her.
"And Dad..." she trailed off, watched as he slowly stacked the letters Liza had delivered, tapping their edges smooth.
At that moment, there was a thud from up above, and they jumped. Racing footsteps across the narrow shed. Anna-Lucia darted away from the ladder without processing what she was doing. The trapdoor creaked open. "Lookout, below!" Kevin's hoarse whisper came down.
"The ladder," Andrew said, sagging relief in his voice, and Anna-Lucia hurried back to get it in place. Kevin's big bulk came down noisily, the trapdoor thumping closed behind him.
"George," he said breathlessly, mopping his red forehead with his sleeve, "where'd you last see Ashlynn?"
George paled under his stubble. "Fixing the kids breakfast."
"She just came out of the cornfield."
"Ashlynn in the corn?" Anna-Lucia said skeptically before she could stop herself.
"George, she finally did it. She contacted the VCC men."
"She can't have," George protested, but his eyes belied his words.
"We have to get out, now."
"Kill the furnace," Kevin ordered Andrew.
"Not even on yet," Andrew replied, and with a doubtful look at the stack of letters in his hand, he moved to back corner where a gas fireplace was incongruously installed. He turned it on, let it flare hot on the fuel, and set the letters inside. They burned, the heat whipping out across the cool of the underground room. He killed the flames and reached for a long-handled ash shovel, and moved them into the waiting bin. It seemed to take forever. George was busy reading his own missives, eyes skimming side to side, brow furrowed, large hands holding the thin sheets surprisingly gently. Liza buried her head in her bag, digging and shuffling.
Anna-Lucia took a good look around the shelter for the first time. It was nearly a mirror of the setup above, but more empty. Very few papers. No pins in the clean, pristine maps. No radios. No electronics at all, besides the lights, unless they were hidden in the drawers, each closed and with a lock on the front.
Memory, she realized. All memory and networking. All analog. Nothing trackable. No evidence. "Is this place bugged?"
"It's the only place we can keep free for certain," her father replied, finishing his job. "Let's go. Split up."
Behind the fireplace tools on their standing rack was a small door, what looked like a place to store supplies or tools. But when Andrew pulled the handle it, a tall section of wall moved, revealing a steep, narrow tunnel winding out of sight. "George, you here. Kevin, you'll have to come back the way you did." With a nod, Kevin turned and was gone.
"You'll come up from here?" George asked, striding swiftly forward towards the tunnel.
"The usual. Annual building inspection, even for not up to code shelters."
"Dad?" asked Liza, rearranging the last of her bag.
"You and Anna-Lucia are with me."
They climbed the ladder and settled the trapdoor shut. "Did she really betray us?" Anna-Lucia asked.
"Have to assume so," Andrew grunted, lowering the trap door.
"Where does that tunnel come up?" Anna-Lucia asked.
"In the timber. He came down from that way."
"I can't really believe she'd do that to George," Liza said. "Not really. I know I haven't been around lately, and they've always had their differences, but..."
"There's a lot you kids weren't told," Andrew said as they exited the shed. "I guess it's time we fixed that." He carefully latched the door, but deliberately let the padlock swing free as ever. "You go find your cousins. This is Addison reunion week, after all." He nodded them in the direction of the pond, which could just be seen from the rise where they stood; several small figures milled around in the shade.
"Just mind you watch your voices. Corn has ears, you know."
"But Dad, what--"
"I'll be up at the house," he interrupted, glancing down at the huge face of his analog workman's watch. "It's field manager conference time."

Tips to Save your life
I absolutely love those megaposts with helpful tips, so I wanted to make my own! These are tips that EVERYONE should know!
Click “keep reading” for ways to save your life in a dire situation!
TIPS:
-LEARN the Heimlich maneuver! Learn how to do it on yourself, on pregnant women, and on babies.
-In a crisis situation, remind yourself to pay attention to what’s going on around you. Prevent yourself from panicking by realizing what’s going on and trying to find a solution, but do not fall victim to normalcy bias, which is basically when you irrationally underestimate the dangerous circumstances. So stay calm, but not TOO calm, and DO NOT freeze in place.
-If you need to call 911 BUT: you don’t have a signal, don’t have money for a payphone, or are in a another country, DIAL 911 ANYWAY! American law says that ALL phones MUST be able to dial 911 no matter what. If you’re in another country, use what you’re familiar with and you will be directed to the correct emergency service line. Dialing 112 or 999 is a good option too.
-If you are approached by a brown bear, or see one near you, DO NOT RUN. You could NEVER outrun a bear. Instead, lay on the ground with your arms protecting your head. You can lay flat, or in a ball on your knees. Just play dead!
-If you are approached by a black bear, or see one near you, DO NOT PLAY DEAD! Black bears will see you as an easy treat if you lay down or act weak. If a black bear attacks you, fight back! They wont try to pursue prey that aggressively resists. Really, you can scream at a black bear to scare it off; they don’t like confrontation. They bluff and go for easy food.
-*If bitten by a snake, try to remember the snake’s appearance. This could help medical experts when trying to give you the correct anti-venom. Calm down and place the wound below your heart to slow down the spread of venom. Do not wash the wound! Just cover it with loose clothing or a clean bandage and call emergency services.
-**If you see a shark swimming nearby, or if you’ve just survived an attack from one, slowly swim backwards to the shore while keeping your eyes locked to the shark.
-If you encounter a mountain lion, DO NOT turn your back to it! Keep your eyes locked on it and slowly walk to safety.
-If a tornado seems stationary (not moving), it’s either moving away from you or TOWARDS you. Do NOT waste time by waiting to see if it’s coming or not! Tornadoes are faster than they look!
-In a housefire: stay low to the ground for breathable air and check doorknobs with the back of your hand. Every family should have a fire escape plan and should know the layout of their home!
-If you need to check something that could potentially shock you, touch it with the BACK of your hand. If you grab it and it electrifies you, your muscles with clamp onto the object and you will not be able to let go.
-(*)If you are grabbed by a stranger, scream for help and make as much noise as you can. If you can’t scream, do EVERYTHING you can to harm them. Gouge their eyes with your fingers, bite their ear off, punch their throat. DO not be kind to them!
-(*) If you are in the back of a stranger’s vehicle, do anything you can to get your DNA everywhere. Spit, pee/poop, tear out your hair, bleed---anything to get your DNA in their car!
- If you’re stuck in a trunk, try to kick out the back lights and wave your arm or leg out.
-Don’t slide into pins in a bowling alley, you could get crushed by the arms of the alleyway that clears out the knocked-over pins. (Seriously DO NOT do this)
-If you need to break open a car window, smash it from the sides/corners where it is the weakest.
-If you are on the beach and the water seems gone or far beyond the normal tide, RUN like hell. This is a sure sign of an upcoming tsunami.
-If someone or even some animal has ingested antifreeze or wiper fluid, drink alcohol (vodka works best), and get them to the hospital immediately. The alcohol will stop the toxic fluid from shredding their kidneys.
-If you’re in a pool and you can taste something metallic in the water, then it’s very likely an electrical short is somewhere in the water. Get out immediately. Ideally, taste the water before going into a pool (it’s gross, yes, but survival isn’t always delicious)
-The Morse code for SOS is: …---...--- (three short, three long, three short).
-If you are performing CPR on someone, DO NOT STOP IF YOU HEAR BONES CRACK. Bones can heal! A stopped heart cannot!
-If you are driving and a deer runs across the road, it’s better to hit it than to end up in a ditch. BUT!!! If a cow or a moose is in your way, SWERVE! Hitting cows or moose is just as impactful as hitting a brick wall.
CORRECTED SURVIVAL MYTHS:
-*DO NOT suck out snake venom! Do not tie a tourniquet around your leg to stop the venom either. Call emergency services instead.
-While abandoned in the wild, food should NOT be your first priority. CLEAN WATER is your first priority! You can survive up to three weeks without food, but only three days without water. Food should be your LAST priority.
-DO NOT EAT SNOW IN PLACE OF DRINKING WATER! If you’re stranded in a snowy area and need water, melt the snow first!
-Moss DOES NOT JUST grow on the North side of trees! If you plan on going on a trip, BRING A COMPASS.
-**DO NOT punch a shark to prevent them from attacking you! Poke out their eyes or gills.
-DO NOT DRINK YOUR OWN PEE! Urine contains your body’s waste, which could include salt. Consuming your own urine could dehydrate you even more. Put it through some kind of filter, or just find clean water.
-DO NOT SPLASH WATER ON OIL/GREASE/ELECTRICAL FIRES!
-DO NOT DRINK CACTUS WATER!
-SIMPLY BOILING WATER WON’T COMPLETELY CLEAN IT! Filter it through a cloth, and THEN boil it!

Ravished - Chapter Nine: Trickster
Author’s notes: I have to say I felt sorry for Harald in this chapter. To the Harald’s lovers, don’t kill me, but well, it was this or worst…
Warnings: mentions of murder and Ivar being Ivar…
Words: 2.565
To come into fishing boats was a good idea after all: Kattegat's horns weren't sounded until they landed at the docks.
But there wasn't anyone at the docks after all and it worried Harald. What was the plan of the three bastards in the end? To leave the city entirely abandoned? Who would do such a thing?
And who would close the market just because of a battle that isn't even near the capital?
"Be careful. I don't trust these three brats, not anymore" Harald said to his men.
They were stepping carefully and he didn't have taken too much man with him through the sea. The other groups would come through the woods, the roads, and the walls. His idea was to confuse Hvitserk because he could remember very well that the most intricate plans of his little brother had to be explained in parts or just not explained. Hvitserk couldn't take too many things at the same time and he would rather listen to what he had to do and period.
So multiple spots of attacking would confuse the boy and make it easy to overthrow him. However, something was wrong.
Unless their men had lost the time and attacked before he was planning at some spot, Kattegat's beach was too empty to his taste.
The horns finally sounded, but just to confirm Harald's suspicious: not the alarm sound, long and clear, but some fast sounds, as if they were counting something. He paid attention and soon he noticed the towers weren't touching the horns at the same time, but each tower was sounding at a time.
When he raised his eyes, they got widen with a fifth sound at the sequence.
Five sounds. Five spots he was intending to attack: the horns were telling them which spots were already being attacked, in which spots they had approached enough.
"It's a fucking ambush! RETRIEVE!!" he ordered, and so Ivar's men got out of everywhere.
There were men inside barrels, under the docks, around the tents, inside the abandoned boats, everywhere!
And when Harald's men reached the water, he heard another horn sounding from the beach tower and a barrier of long thorns was released, getting up from the bottom of the sea, locking their boats, destroying some of them on the process.
The fucking bastards locked him there. They were waiting for him. He heard the sound of the crutch and so everything made sense.
"You crippled bastard..."
It wasn't Hvitserk...
It was the damn bastard Ivar who stayed behind to lead Kattegat while the others were in the North biting the bait he had thrown for them.
The men that weren't killed were surrounded around him and Harald's eyes found those damn blues he hated so much looking at him with that air of victory that Ivar had mixed with sarcasm in his smile.
"Welcome back, King Harald!" he said, tilting his head aside, ironic "I'm sorry to say my brothers had a little problem to solve in the North, so they aren’t here to receive you as well. However, you know my crippled ass don't like cold places, so I try to keep my butt away from the snow, ya know?" Ivar was playing with him.
That sarcastic smile on his face causing Harald’s stomach to turn inside his belly.
The sound of screaming, the smell of fire and the sound of the road tower's horn called Harald’s attention and Ivar smiled in a victorious curve.
"What was that? What have you done?" Harald asked, almost hysterical when rolls of black smoke started to erupt from the road location and the sound of the second road tower's horn started to sound quite before smoke could be seen coming from there as well.
"Ah, this?" Ivar opened his arms, smiling "These are my welcoming gifts to your little parties on my doors. I thought I should prepare something to receive you, my old friend" Ivar's eyes became murderous and Harald heard the horn from the woods tower sounding.
Those sounds were the sign of his men, dying for he was stupid enough to fall on Ivar's traps once again.
"You fucking damn crippled! I will kill you!!" he growled, trying to advance, but a wall of shields was suddenly formed in front of Ivar, pushing him back to the center of his men's circle to see the boy laughing, dismissing the shields as if he was untouchable by himself.
"I admire you. I have to be honest, I admire your inner fire and the impetuous way you fight, Harald. But you have to admit it was kinda innocent of you to think I would leave Hvitserk taking care of everything without a single plan in mind..." Ivar said, looking at him with that despicable arrogance in his face and poking his own temple to indicate he had a brain inside that bony skull "And you really thought I would leave Vestfold and not to have a single man following your butt all the time? Oh, how sweet of you to trust me this way... I'm not stupid, Harald. I knew you would come for Kattegat just as you wanted to do before. And who can blame me for betraying our little pact: you entered on that war just because it was a good excuse to go over my father's crown for my father's lands. You always had eyes for Kattegat, greedy eyes, eager eyes that was just waiting for Ragnar to die so you could conquer what you could never take from my father's hands. Of from Björn's after him" he continued, causing Harald to clench his teeth on noticing how far that boy was able to read him. "You even killed your own brother for this goal, do you really think I don't know how far you could go for Kattegat? I killed my own brother as well, Harald, because I wanted the peace of his silence and I was able to do anything for it, so there is no man on the face of Midgard that knows your feelings better than me."
Ivar's expression became hard and Harald lowered his head.
The memory of Halfdan's betrayal and the way he had to kill his brother eating his heart inside.
"But we aren't here to remember the dead are we?" Ivar said, causing Harald to raise his eyes for him again "Instead of what you think, I'm not killing your men. At least not now".
Harald's eyes looked surprised and Ivar tilted his head softly once again.
"The smoke you're seeing is from traps indeed. And I see you got my little code of communication between my horn towers. You're right: they are sending signs to each other and now, all my tower guards are looking to us since, as you can see…" he pointed behind him, showing a line of his men with a pair of shields in their hands. "…I have to give them an order and you will be the one who will tell me what to say. Each warrior on that line has a red and a yellow shield. Depending on what will be your answer to my proposal, they will raise the yellow shield, allowing my tower guards to signalize my men to bring your men here, to the beach, where you all shall have a beautiful family reunion to departure together or..." he made a brief pause, causing Harald to swallow dry "they will raise the red shield and my towers will signalize my men to slaughter your men around my entire city, so you will be able to see a beautiful sea of burning boats tonight."
Harald knew he had to be careful with his choices because the murderous bastard in front of his eyes wasn't kidding. Ivar could kill everyone in a single strike with no remorse and he knew most of his men were fathers, brothers, husbands... They were all disposed to die for him, but if he could preserve their lives...
"What do you want, Ivar?"
"You will lower your head and accept to be an earl under the Three Crowns of Kattegat from today on. Vestfold will become one of our counties and you can keep ruling your fishermen's little village under my reign, being a good and meek ally and not ever again stepping on Kattegat without a really good reason or a formal invitation from your kings..." Ivar’s eyes shined on his and Harald felt his pride being pinned under Ivar's sharp crutch "Or I can kill your men, burn you on top of their funeral pyre, clean that filthy land you call your kingdom until I be sure that there is not a single peasant loyal to your damn name so I can start Vestfold from the zero and under my crown anyway." he grunted, harsh, looking right into Harald's eyes.
Remembering him all people of Vestfold was loyal to him and would die with the wrong choice since his best warriors were there with him and there will be no warriors enough to protect his city.
"Your choice... What will be: die as a king with your people or rule them as a loyal earl, Harald?"
Harald had no choice. He felt his sweaty hands shivering on the sword and shield.
A boy.
He who faced dozens of enemies was falling because of a boy. A damn son of Ragnar, favored by the gods, blessed by them...
He who faced dozens of enemies was falling because of a boy. A damn son of Ragnar, favored by the gods, blessed by them... His pride was destroyed, so why to sacrifice innocent people because of something that couldn't be restored?
At least, as an earl, he could keep his people safe from the bloody hands of that crippled and beside Kattegat, his merchants would grow faster. Vestfold would become majestic. It is not that he couldn't make Vestfold bigger than it was already, but he always has seen Kattegat as a powerful wind on his sails. And now the entire boat could have this wind if he could let go of the rudder.
He heard his men's words and mourns when his shield hit the ground and they saw their king bend to another man. Harald sunk his sword tip at the sand of Kattegat and over the land he swore would be his one day, he made a new oath.
"For the lives of my men and my people and the greater good of my kingdom, I accept your terms, Boneless." he grunted, clenched teeth to say the harder and bitterest words of his entire life "Vestfold bends under the Three Crowns in exchange of your benevolence, King Ivar".
Ivar smiled and leaned his body to look Harald in the eyes.
"Kingdoms don't bend under our crowns, Harald. They bloom," he said, motioning his fingers to the men.
Yellow shields were raised and the sound of the horns echoed through Kattegat.
His men were saved and still under his leadership, but he felt Ivar's fingers sliding through his face, pushing his metal crown from his head to the ground.
"Send your men back home, Earl Harald. Only the closes shall stay to testify your oath of loyalty and feast with us. The rest of them can safely go back to their families. Come. You're my guest tonight. But remember" he said; his blue eyes fiercely into Harald's. "Your kings have eyes everywhere. My brothers and I are like Odin and his crowns. What my eyes can't see, their eyes are seeing. Do not try to stab one of our backs or the two other pairs of hands will rip your heart out. Was I clear?"
"My king" one of Harald's men raised his voice looking at him "Is that what you want for real?"
"Yes." Ivar answered in his place, leaving clear who was the king walking around "Why do I should work so hard for something I don't want, my friend?" he said, almost ironically, seeing the man oscillating his gaze from him to Harald, who was getting up from the sand. "Now go, go back to your family. Your wife must be waiting. Go. There is no reason for you to remain here." Ivar motioned his fingers for the men to go and Harald sighed.
"You listened to your king. Go back to your homes and families. There is nothing more to be seen here".
Walking behind Ivar, Harald left behind men with heads low.
Their king was defeated and their dream, over.
Some of them simply couldn't accept such a fate and one of them, the one who was talking, growled in fury, advancing with his sword towards Ivar's back. A fast reaction that would cost him dear: he would be able to sink his sword into Ivar's shoulder before his men finished his life, but the man was disposed to go forward and die for his king's honor.
However, it wasn't an enemy sword that blocked the strike, but Harald's blade itself held the man's sword against his. And he placed his body between the man and Ivar, looking straight into the man's eyes.
"I said go back home. This is not our way and you know this. We don't backstab anyone for no reason. I gave my word of loyalty and it shall be respected."
"My king, what about your dream?!" he tried, but Harald pushed him back under the attentive blues of Ivar.
"A king shall sacrifice himself for the sake of our people! It is true I want to be the king of entire Norway, but more than this I want to see my lands grow. There is no meaning of being a king on a burning pyre from the ashes of my dreams! I much rather be the earl of growing families and fertile lands! Now go back to your lands, my friend. Go back to your wife. I know she's bearing your child. Go see your firstborn come into this world and don't worry. Any of you shall worry. Bright times will come."
Ivar just smiled behind Harald. It was wise words in his mouth and a good proof of what he already knew.
Harald could be brave and fierce, but he was wise. His loyalty would serve the crowns very well and he didn't intend to disturb Vestfold as long as Harald was able to keep his eager hands away from Kattegat.
In the hall, the terms were defined and Harald made his oath under a new armband. A feast was served and in the morning, the new earl left with his broken pride and promises of peace.
The deal between them wasn't that bad for Harald after all: the division of the docks left all the fisher boats with Vestfold and merchants on Kattegat, allowing the two docks to work together as he used to plan in his dreams. Vestfold would raise and grow as he wanted. It wasn't a bad deal after all.
It wasn't a bad deal after all...
It wasn't a bad deal after all...
His mind kept repeating it while his boat was going away from Kattegat's bay.
His eyes on the metal crown Ivar was holding in his hand, looking to the boats from the beach waving ironically while they were peacefully going away.
It wasn't a bad deal, after all.

What Did The Radical Republicans Stand For

Radical Republican Reconstruction Plan
Republicans need to ‘grow a back bone, stand up to corporate America: Sen. Cruz
The postwar Radical Republicans were motivated by three main factors:
Revenge a desire among some to punish the South for causing the war
Concern for the freedmen some believed that the federal government had a role to play in the transition of freedmen from slavery to freedom
Political concerns the Radicals wanted to keep the Republican Party in power in both the North and the South.
Liberal land policies for settlers
Federal aid for railroad development

Radical Republicans And Reconstruction
These policies were not severe enough for the Radical Republicans, a faction of the Republican Party that favored a stricter Reconstruction policy. They insisted on a dramatic expansion of the power of the federal government over the states as well as guarantees of black suffrage. The Radicals did consider the Southern states out of the Union. Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner spoke of the former Confederate states as having committed suicide. Congressman Thaddeus Stevens of Pennsylvania went further, describing the seceded states as conquered provinces. Such a mentality would go a long way in justifying the Radicals disregard of the rule of law in their treatment of these states.
President Johnsons Reconstruction plan had been proceeding well by the time Congress convened in late 1865. But Congress refused to seat the representatives from the Southern states even though they had organized governments according to the terms of Lincolns or Johnsons plan. Although Congress had the right to judge the qualifications of its members, this was a sweeping rejection of an entire class of representatives rather than the case-by-case evaluation assumed by the Constitution. When Tennessees Horace Maynard, who had never been anything but scrupulously loyal to the Union, was not seated, it was clear that no Southern representative would be.
What Northerns And Southerns Thought of the Civil War
This article is one of many of our educational resources on Reconstruction.
How Is The Democratic Party Different From The Republican Party
Democrats are generally considered liberal, while Republicans are seen as conservative. The Democratic Party typically supports a larger government role in economic issues, backing regulations and social welfare programs. The Republicans, however, typically want a smaller government that is less involved in the economy. This contrary view on the size of government is reflected in their positions on taxesDemocrats favour a progressive tax to finance governments expanded role, while Republicans support lower taxes for all. However, Republicans do support a large budget for the military, and they often aggressively pursue U.S. national security interests, even if that means acting unilaterally. Democrats, however, prefer multilateralism. On social issues, Democrats seek greater freedoms, while Republicans follow more traditional values, supporting government intervention in such matters. For example, Democrats generally back abortion rights, while Republicans dont. In terms of geography, Democrats typically dominate in large cities, while Republicans are especially popular in rural areas.

How Did This Switch Happen
Eric Rauchway, professor of American history at the University of California, Davis, pins the transition to the turn of the 20th century, when a highly influential Democrat named William Jennings Bryan blurred party lines by emphasizing the government’s role in ensuring social justice through expansions of federal power traditionally, a Republican stance.;
But Republicans didn’t immediately adopt the opposite position of favoring limited government.;

“Instead, for a couple of decades, both parties are promising an augmented federal government devoted in various ways to the cause of social justice,” Rauchway wrote in an archived 2010 blog post for the Chronicles of Higher Education. Only gradually did Republican rhetoric drift to the counterarguments. The party’s small-government platform cemented in the 1930s with its heated opposition to the New Deal.
But why did Bryan and other turn-of-the-century Democrats start advocating for big government?;
According to Rauchway, they, like Republicans, were trying to win the West. The admission of new western states to the union in the post-Civil War era created a new voting bloc, and both parties were vying for its attention.

Who Uses Radical Republicans

The Radical Republicans played an important role in US history, and they are widely referenced in formal discussions of the Civil War and Reconstruction.
Contemporary liberal and progressive American politicians who push strongly for reforms and champion racial equality may be compared to the Radical Republicans, despite the irony that historic Democrats variously opposed the empowerment of black Americans.
Alternatively, members of the modern conservative Republican Party who are particularly vehement about their political ideologies may be called Radical Republicans, though their positions may far from resemble their partys historic ones.
Outside of the United States, a Radical Republican Party existed in early 20th-century Spain, and is used in the context of Spanish history as well.

Eisenhower Goldwater And Nixon: 19521974
In 1952, Dwight D. Eisenhower, an internationalist allied with the Dewey wing, was drafted as a GOP candidate by a small group of Republicans led by Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. in order that he challenge Taft on foreign policy issues. The two men were not far apart on domestic issues. Eisenhower’s victory broke a twenty-year Democratic lock on the White House. Eisenhower did not try to roll back the New Deal, but he did expand the Social Security system and built the Interstate Highway System.
After 1945, the isolationists in the conservative wing opposed the United Nations and were half-hearted in opposition to the expansion of Cold War containment of communism around the world. A garrison state to fight communism, they believed, would mean regimentation and government controls at home. Eisenhower defeated Taft in 1952 on foreign policy issues.
Eisenhower was an exception to most Presidents in that he usually let Vice President Richard Nixon handle party affairs . Nixon was narrowly defeated by John F. Kennedy in the 1960 United States presidential election, weakening his moderate wing of the party.

Nixon defeated both Hubert Humphrey and George C. Wallace in 1968. When the Democratic left took over their party in 1972, Nixon won reelection by carrying 49 states.
What Was The Radical Plan Of Reconstruction
After the election of November 6, 1866, Congress imposes its own Reconstruction policies, referred to by historians as Radical Reconstruction. This re-empowers the Freedmans Bureau and sets reform efforts in motion that will lead to the 14th and 15th Amendments, which, respectively, grant citizenship to all

What Was The Difference Between Lincolns And Johnsons Reconstruction Plans
Johnsons plan wasnt as willing to give as much freedom to newly free slaves as Lincolns was. Johnson wanted to give the land back to the south unlike the RR. Johnsons plan gave less protection to freed slaves then the Radical Republicans plan. Unlike the 10% plan, the plan they had wanted to punish the south.
Andrew Johnson And Presidential Reconstruction
Rep. Cheney: The radical left have seized control of the Democrat Party
At the end of May 1865, President Andrew Johnson announced his plans for Reconstruction, which reflected both his staunch Unionism and his firm belief in states rights. In Johnsons view, the southern states had never given up their right to govern themselves, and the federal government had no right to determine voting requirements or other questions at the state level. Under Johnsons Presidential Reconstruction, all land that had been confiscated by the Union Army and distributed to the formerly enslaved people by the army or the Freedmens Bureau reverted to its prewar owners. Apart from being required to uphold the abolition of slavery , swear loyalty to the Union and pay off war debt, southern state governments were given free rein to rebuild themselves.
As a result of Johnsons leniency, many southern states in 1865 and 1866 successfully enacted a series of laws known as the black codes, which were designed to restrict freed Black peoples activity and ensure their availability as a labor force. These repressive codes enraged many in the North, including numerous members of Congress, which refused to seat congressmen and senators elected from the southern states.;

Why Did Radical Republicans Disagree With Lincoln
The Radical Republicans opposed Lincolns plan because they thought it too lenient toward the South. Radical Republicans believed that Lincolns plan for Reconstruction was not harsh enough because, from their point of view, the South was guilty of starting the war and deserved to be punished as such.
The Obama Years And The Rise Of The Tea Party: 20082016
Following the 2008 elections, the Republican Party, reeling from the loss of the presidency, Congress and key state governorships, was fractured and leaderless.Michael Steele became the first black chairman of the Republican National Committee, but was a poor fundraiser and was replaced after numerous gaffes and missteps. Republicans suffered an additional loss in the Senate in April 2009, when Arlen Specter switched to the Democratic Party, depriving the GOP of a critical 41st vote to block legislation in the Senate. The seating of Al Frankenseveral months later effectively handed the Democrats a filibuster-proof majority, but it was short-lived as the GOP took back its 41st vote when Scott Brown won a special election in Massachusetts in early 2010.
Republicans won back control of the House of Representatives in the , with a net gain of 63 seats, the largest gain for either party since 1948. The GOP also picked up six seats in the Senate, falling short of retaking control in that chamber, and posted additional gains in state governor and legislative races. Boehner became Speaker of the House while McConnell remained as the Senate Minority Leader. In an interview with National Journal magazine about congressional Republican priorities, McConnell explained that “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for Obama to be a one-term president”.

From Watergate To A New Millennium
From 1972 to 1988 the Democrats lost four of five presidential elections. In 1972 the party nominated antiwar candidate George S. McGovern, who lost to Nixon in one of the biggest landslides in U.S. electoral history. Two years later the Watergate scandal forced Nixons resignation, enabling Jimmy Carter, then the Democratic governor of Georgia, to defeat Gerald R. Ford, Nixons successor, in 1976. Although Carter orchestrated the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, his presidency was plagued by a sluggish economy and by the crisis over the kidnapping and prolonged captivity of U.S. diplomats in Iran following the Islamic revolution there in 1979. Carter was defeated in 1980 by conservative Republican Ronald W. Reagan, who was easily reelected in 1984 against Carters vice president, Walter F. Mondale. Mondales running mate, Geraldine A. Ferraro, was the first female candidate on a major-party ticket. Reagans vice president, George Bush, defeated Massachusetts Governor Michael S. Dukakis in 1988. Despite its losses in the presidential elections of the 1970s and 80s, the Democratic Party continued to control both houses of Congress for most of the period .
Making Black Demands Known
For now, the only leverage blacks could apply in making their demands was the threat of the continued presence of federal troops and agentsespecially of the Freedmens Bureau, which whites particularly hatedin the South. These demands included, first and foremost, the right to vote, to serve on juries, and to obtain education. Although economic issuesparticularly that of landownership, and whether the federal government would compensate the former slaves with free landwere of great concern to blacks, they generally avoided making demands in this area because they did not want to alarm whites. Their statements were sprinkled with the references to such popular nineteenth-century values as hard work, honesty, thrift, neatness, morality, and Christianity. They asked for civil and political rights but not for social equality with whites, emphasizing that they did not wish to socialize with whites if whites did not desire such contact.

Understanding The American Republican Party Of Reconstruction
We explain three;different types of Republicans found in America during Civil War Reconstruction: moderate, conservative, and radical Republicans.
Lincoln, the first Republican President,;was a moderate Republican like Ulysses S. Grant.;The moderate Republicans of Reconstruction took a centered stance on the South after the war. Meanwhile, Radical Republicans wanted stricter punishment of the Confederate ex-Democrat Rebels, and the Conservatives supported fewer reprimands;and quicker readmission into the Union for the South.
Progressive Era And The Great Depression
Because of the Republican Partys association with business interests, by the early 20th century it was increasingly seen as the party of the upper-class elite.
With the rise of the Progressive movement, which sought to improve life for working-class Americans and encourage Protestant values such as temperance , some Republicans championed progressive social, economic and labor reforms, including President Theodore Roosevelt, who split from the more conservative wing of the party after leaving office.
Republicans benefited from the prosperity of the 1920s, but after the stock market crash of 1929 ushered in the Great Depression, many Americans blamed them for the crisis and deplored their resistance to use direct government intervention to help people. This dissatisfaction allowed Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt to easily defeat the Republican incumbent, Herbert Hoover, in 1932.

The New Deal Coalition
The countrys third critical election, in 1932, took place in the wake of the stock market crash of 1929 and in the midst of the Great Depression. Led by Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Democrats not only regained the presidency but also replaced the Republicans as the majority party throughout the countryin the North as well as the South. Through his political skills and his sweeping New Deal social programs, such as social security and the statutory minimum wage, Roosevelt forged a broad coalitionincluding small farmers, Northern city dwellers, organized labour, European immigrants, liberals, intellectuals, and reformersthat enabled the Democratic Party to retain the presidency until 1952 and to control both houses of Congress for most of the period from the 1930s to the mid-1990s. Roosevelt was reelected in 1936, 1940, and 1944; he was the only president to be elected to more than two terms. Upon his death in 1945 he was succeeded by his vice president, Harry S. Truman, who was narrowly elected in 1948.
What Were The Goals Of Reconstruction For Radical Republicans
The Radical Left’s Agenda: Blow It All Up | Bill O’Reilly
They wanted to prevent the leaders of the confederacy from returning to power after the war, they wanted the republican party to become a powerful institution in the south, and they wanted the federal government to help african americans achieve political equality by guaranteeing their rights to vote in the south.

Reconstruction Comes To An End
After 1867, an increasing number of southern whites turned to violence in response to the revolutionary changes of Radical Reconstruction. The Ku Klux Klan and other white supremacist organizations targeted local Republican leaders, white and Black, and other African Americans who challenged white authority. Though federal legislation passed during the administration of President Ulysses S. Grant in 1871 took aim at the Klan and others who attempted to interfere with Black suffrage and other political rights, white supremacy gradually reasserted its hold on the South after the early 1870s as support for Reconstruction waned.;
Racism was still a potent force in both South and North, and Republicans became more conservative and less egalitarian as the decade continued. In 1874after an economic depression plunged much of the South into povertythe Democratic Party won control of the House of Representatives for the first time since the Civil War.
READ MORE: How the 1876 Election Effectively Ended Reconstruction
The Compromise of 1876 marked the end of Reconstruction as a distinct period, but the struggle to deal with the revolution ushered in by slaverys eradication would continue in the South and elsewhere long after that date. A century later, the legacy of Reconstruction would be revived during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, as African Americans fought for the political, economic and social equality that had long been denied them.

Stevens carried the resolutely determined spirit of a fighter with him throughout his life.
Illustration adapted from Matthew Brady photograph / The Granger Collection, New York
In 1813, a young Thaddeus Stevens was attending a small college in Vermont. This was well before the time when good fences made good neighbors. Free-roaming cows often strayed onto campus. Manure piled up. Odors lingered. Resentment among students festered. One spring ;day, Stevens ;and ;a friend borrowed an ax from another students room and killed one of the cows, and then slipped the bloody ;weapon back into the unsuspecting classmates room.;
When the farmer ;complained, the school refused to let the wrongly accused man graduate. Stevens, unable to stomach this injustice, contacted the farmer on his own, fessed up, and ;made arrangements to pay damages. The farmer ;withdrew his complaint, and, within a few years, Stevens paid the farmer back. In gratitude, the farmer sent Stevens a hogshead of cider.
The anecdote demonstrates early on in his life Stevenss basic characterhis rashness, his inconsistencies, his convictions, and his tenacity.
Future president James Buchanan worked with Stevens on a case being tried in York. During a break, Buchanan attempted to persuade the rising attorney to get involved in politicson the side of the Jacksonian Democrats. Stevens declined, as he was still in search of the political party that best matched his beliefs.

Next is doing well thanks to strong online and click-and-collect sales (or cold weather in November). Boots profit drop. Greggs sharing profit with staff. More Christmas retail winners and losers.
Retail is changing a lot as online shopping takes more market share, shopping habits change, and as high streets gradually reconfigure. There’s a sense that the middle ground (average products and services, average locations) is disappearing: products and services that rely on shoppers having poor information about price or product complexity are struggling because the internet is really good at ironing out information asymmetries like that. Product and services have to become clearer, more distinct.
Takeaway.com buys Just Eat
Dutch meal delivery co Takeaway.com is buying Just Eat for about £6 billion. It says the combined company will handle more orders than rivals Uber Eats, GrubHub and Delivery Hero, and will be second only to China’s Meituan. (Why does delivered prepared-food matter? 66% of shoppers buy prepared food items from a retail location at least three times a month.)
Elsewhere: supermarket Carrefour is buying Dejbox, whose thing is delivering lunches to office workers.
Cummings: “I don’t really know what I’m looking for”
A blog post written by the Prime Minister’s senior advisor says there are “some profound problems at the core of how the British state makes decisions” and calls for weirdos and misfits to apply for jobs. The civil service does need modernising. The landscape (digital, Brexit, ageing population, climate change etc) will need us to reset and re-make many things. So, leaving aside your political affiliations, problems at the core is reasonably correct.
However the post also feels a bit... technophilic, thrashy, a bit internet copy-paste-y, a bit performatively clever. It’s clear that Cummings and team are smart, that they admire parts of tech startup culture (it would have been interesting if Downing Street were saying things like this when GDS started.) But it’s not so clear that they understand how institutions and culture are (re)formed, and how people are central to it all. It looks like the general approach might be to tear everything down and rebuild. Possibly including the people they hire: “I’ll bin you within weeks if you don’t fit — don’t complain later because I made it clear now.” So the 2022 confessionals of ex-employees should be interesting.
Some interesting commentary about DC’s post, all of these smart and worth a read:

Scale: saving time with faster logins
GOV.UK: £40 million investment to reduce NHS staff login times:
“The investment will support projects similar to that seen at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, which implemented single sign-on technology and reduced time spent logging into multiple computer systems from 1 minute 45 seconds to just 10 seconds. With almost 5,000 logins a day, it saved over 130 hours of staff time and freed up their time to focus on patient care”
That’s 130 staff hours saved every day, in one hospital. Small improvements at scale can have big outcomes (when the Co-op introduced SmartGap to help shelf re-stocking in stores, it saved 15 minutes per store daily, which adds up to 27 years and 5,000 trees saved every year).
What if mobile phone hackers sold you good customer service?
“SIM swaps” are when a hacker calls your mobile phone company, persuades them that they’re you with some of your personal information, and then has the mobile phone co point your mobile number at a new SIM card. The hacker now receives your calls and text messages and all of the one-time passwords used in two factor authentication and “forgot password” features etc. (The usual way to protect yourself from this is to put a PIN on your mobile phone account.) But:
SIM swappers are escalating. Hackers now reaching directly into AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint systems to perform SIM swaps themselves. Seen screenshots of this in action with T-Mobile and AT&T; Sprint confirmed issue.
That raises the interesting prospect of hackers adding parallel business lines. If a hacker has access to a mobile phone company’s account and customer support systems, would you pay them a reasonable fee to get faster and higher quality customer support on your mobile phone account? (And if they were offering that, would you also buy their “we promise no hacking” insurance policy?)
Predictions: “A library of mouth feels”
It’s the season of predictions for the year and the decade. Food in 2050: bacon grown on blades of grass and bioreactor chicken nuggets. Mmm, if “we can make a library of mouth feels and texture at a nanoscale”... why don’t we just grow the food inside the mouth, or in the gut? (newsletter handwaves wildly)
Also: “I am getting worried that I was perhaps too optimistic” - self-driving cars and AI predictions (a scorecard after 2 years). And a good read from Exponential View: Preparing for 2030.
Other news
Travelex was hit by ransomware at the end of 2019, locking up some systems and data. Two weeks later, they’re still using pen and paper.
Global 5G wireless deal threatens weather forecasts. Great timing: not a great decade to be guessing what the weather’s going to be.
"Karie wants to get rid of the analytics people because she refuses to listen to polling - which she says is all slanted and biased - even though it's just been proven to be horrifically accurate" - is the Labour Party planning to bin its data analytics team?
Here’s some hiring very un-best practice. Newsletter advice: pay interns rather than ask them to pay you! And don’t use interviews to get code for free!
Oh dear, it is 20 years since Y2K (!) and it turns out that some of the “fixes” back then merely delayed the problem.

STOREFRONT AND WOODEN DOOR KEYPAD IN NORTH READING
Normal door locks are handily picked and compromised. The danger of somebody duplicating your key is ever-present when you are utilizing a regular lock. An intruder may even gain access to the key from a past tenant of your home. Keypad door locks are not effectively messed with. If the door is near the window that a burglar can break and reach to open the door from within, you can install cabinet door locks that requires a code to open the door whether all things considered or within. For much more tightly security, you can have distinctive pin codes for the two sides of the door. To know more please contact us at: 339-204-9155 or browse us now.

Humans are weird: The training grounds
*Quick note before I start: This is the 5th installment in a series I’ve called the Lost Colonies which is largely about human society adapting to the strange environments of other worlds. You can read the other installments here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed writing this series, but with my new work schedule I had to bring it to a close. If you’ve enjoyed this story follow me on here for my other writings. Thanks again to everyone who has reblogged, liked, replied, DMed, or otherwise shown their appreciation for this series. It means a lot to me that people enjoyed it and the love you’ve all shown me has really helped keep me going for these last few months.*
Alarms blared as Kiara ran through the maze of corridors. “SHITSHITSHIT! Where the FUCK is she?” Boots clanging off the steel floors nearby told her that troops were closing in. Kiara took a deep breath and focused on the noises around her and managed to pick out gunshots echoing down the hall to her right. Turning towards the shots she picked up speed and tore down the hallway. The hot, dry air stung her lungs as she fought to push herself even faster but still the boots closed in. Finally Kiara rounded another corner and almost ran straight into Jeanne.
Jeanne opened her mouth to say something and then she looked over Kiara’s shoulder and instead pinned her to the wall of the corridor. “Give me a second.” Jeanne grunted as she stuck her sidearm out around the corner and fired blindly down the corridor Kiara had just come from. There was the sound of a body hitting the ground and the boots screeched to a halt followed by the electrical hum of an energy barricade. A second later the air was filled with gunshots as the troops opened fire in their direction. Jeanne crouched to lower her profile and kept her back pressed to the wall and gestured for Kiara to follow suit. “So this is turning out more fun than I thought it’d be.” Jeanne yelled over the roar of the gunfire.
Kiara caught her breath as she huddled next to her friend. “FUN?!” Jeanne chuckled “Yeah, I’ve been waiting for these jackasses to do something worth a fight.” Kiara’s jaw dropped in disbelief. “YOU PUNCHED THEIR ENVOY!” Jeanne shrugged and reloaded. “Hold that thought.” Jeanne pulled a fist sized cylinder from her backpack, hit the trigger and threw it down the hallway. The cylinder didn’t even have time to hit the ground before it scanned the hallway, picked the targets and sent a hundred inch long missiles speeding around the energy barricade and into the troopers. Jeanne got up from the floor and helped Kiara to her feet. Jeanne adjusted her gear and handed Kiara a sidearm.
“We should get going. I’ve already signaled for extraction, we just need to make it to the North wall.” “Jeanne there is no ‘North’ here. The magnetic fields are chaotic because of the unstable core. It’s the reason this whole place is a fucking desert!” Jeanne stopped in her tracks. “Shit...” Suddenly bulkheads slammed shut cutting them off in the middle of the corridor. “OK, that could have gone better.” Kiara slumped against the wall. “I can’t fucking believe you sometimes.” Jeanne pulled a cigarette out of a case in her pocket, lit up and took a long drag. “Yeah, I fucked this one up. Sorry. I’ve got a plan though.”
Jeanne got to work setting up a series of devices around their section of the corridor and Kiara sighed. “It’s not entirely your fault. I wasn’t exactly trying too hard with this group.” Jeanne chuckled “I would have loved to have seen the Commander’s face when you told her that you were married to one of those ‘filthy furballs’.” Kiara smiled. “Yeah, I’m really not sure why the galactic council even wanted to try and reintegrate a faction of the EarthGov military that was still active after all this time.” Jeanne shrugged again and stubbed out her cigarette. “Gotta admit it’s been fun though. We haven’t done anything like this in a long time.”
Kiara shifted her weight as Jeanne leaned against the wall next to her. “Can’t help it really. You’re always off on deployment terraforming dangerous worlds and I’ve spent the better part of 20 sols jumping all over the galaxy. I know I should make more time for my friends.” Jeanne cocked an eyebrow at Kiara “Just friends? You don’t need to make more time for Mr Williams-Venn too?” Kiara shifted again. “It’s not like that. Turic cultures... They don’t exactly-” The sound of the bulkhead creaking open cut Kiara off.
Jeanne sprung up from the wall and hit an activation switch on her wrist, a powerful energy field sprung up in all directions shielding the pair from attack. The bulkhead finally retracted into the ceiling revealing several dozen soldiers outfitted in advanced armor with their weapons trained squarely on Jeanne. Jeanne held up a voice amplifier and yelled down the hall. “I INVOKE ARTICLE 317 OF MIL-SEC CODE AND DEMAND TRIAL BY SINGLE COMBAT!” The soldiers paused and looked at each other before one shouted back. “NAME AND RANK?” Jeanne squared her shoulders and bellowed back “STAFF SEARGENT JEANNE JETT. I AM CHALLENGING AS RANKING OFFICER FOR MY DEPLOYMENT GROUP FOR SAFE PASSAGE IN RETREAT OFFWORLD.”
Kiara held her breath as the soldiers were again silent before they finally shouted back their agreement to Jeanne’s terms. As the soldiers lowered their weapons and approached the shield Kiara whispered to Jeanne “Are you sure about this?” to which Jeanne only replied with her trademarked cocky grin and a wink. Jeanne lowered the shield and the soldiers parted to escort the pair out of the corridors. Despite the fact that there weren’t any identifiable markings and the electromagnetic fields scrambled most communications the soldiers led them through the maze of corridors with ease. Finally they were let out into the harsh blue light of the training yard.
This military outpost had been situated on a rocky, mostly barren world in long orbit around a dying blue supergiant. “Dying” was a relative term as it still had thousands, if not millions of sols before it finally collapsed and in the meantime the incredible heat of the star kept the base within habitable conditions even at such a distance. EarthGov had founded this outpost as a training site centuries earlier and the commander of the outpost had been so fanatical in his devotion to EarthGov that even after they had fallen he continued to train new generations of recruits until his eventual death. From what Kiara could tell, each successive commander had treated the outpost like their own personal fiefdom with each in turn making the decision to purposefully remain hidden from the rest of the galaxy.
The current commander Fortrix stood on a raised platform above the training grounds listening to one of her lieutenants. “So you wish to fight for your freedom? So be it, you’ll face me.” Commander Fortrix stepped down from the platform pulling her jacket and shirt off. At over 2 meters tall and nearly 120 KG the commander looked like wall of solid muscle. Fortrix stood in the harsh blue light, muscles rippling across her massive frame as she stretched and prepared for the fight. Jeanne followed suit, dropping her backpack and dozens of hidden weapons before peeling off her sweat drenched shirt and taking her place in the ceremonial fighting circle that had been hastily scratched into the dirt by the eager soldiers.
Jeanne and Fortrix locked stares and closed to the center of the circle where the height difference became readily apparent with Jeanne standing a full 30cm shorter than her opponent. Fortrix and Jeanne grasped each other’s forearms and slapped a closed fist to their bare chests to sign the verbal contract between the soldiers and they backed away to their respective sides of the ring. The lieutenant blew a horn and Fortrix lunged towards Jeanne. Kiara could barely follow the action as Jeanne pivoted, tried to drive a fist into Fortrix’s temple but Fortrix feinted at the last second and swept Jeanne’s legs out from under her dropping her to the ground. Jeanne rolled to the side avoiding Fortrix’s elbow as she smashed it into the dirt inches from her head and Jeanne countered by kicking off the ground and flipping into the air to drive a knee into Fortrix’s chest.
The soldier’s jeered at Jeanne scoring the first blow but cheered as Fortrix grabbed the knee and threw Jeanne clear to the other side of the ring. Jeanne twisted in midair and landed lightly on her feet and bolted back to the other side of the ring at a speed Kiara had never seen. Fortrix had just gotten back to her feet when Jeanne barreled into her heel first driving all of her momentum into the side of the commander’s knee. Fortrix howled in pain and crumpled to the ground as Jeanne spun using the momentum to her advantage and brought her fist around, slamming it into Fortrix’s temple knocking her senseless. The soldier’s fell silent as just that quickly the fight was over. Jeanne stood in the ring panting heavily as the sweat and blood streamed down her skin. Jeanne looked at Kiara and pointed to her voice amplifier which Kiara quickly tossed to her.
“LISTEN UP SHITLORDS! I HAVE DEFEATED YOUR COMMANDER IN SINGLE COMBAT! BY ARTICLE 317 OF MIL-SEC CODE YOU ARE NOW BOUND TO LET US RETURN TO OUR SHIP!” Kiara groaned to herself and wondered if Jeanne really had to call them “shitlords”. True to their word though, the crowd parted to allow Kiara and Jeanne to collect their equipment and leave as Fortrix was ushered off the field on a stretcher. The main door to the training ground slammed shut behind them and they heard a heavy bolt being slid in place. Diplomatically, this whole trip had been a disaster, but at least they had left alive.
Hours later Kiara was writing up her report back on the jumpship when Jeanne came to her quarters grinning and offering a bottle of Andarian wine. “Hey there. We never got to finish our conversation.” Kiara grabbed some glasses and within a few minutes the two of them were finally managing to relax for the first time in days. “I wasn’t joking earlier. What’s going on with you and Kit’cha?” Kiara sighed. “It’s a Turic thing. They don’t really do marriage the same way as humans. For them it’s weird to have emotional attachment to their mates. Kit’cha makes the effort and I appreciate it, but even after all this time it’s still weird for him so I don’t press it too much. There’s also sex...” Jeanne cocked an eyebrow “Oh?” “Human and Turic biology don’t exactly... mesh... that well. We’ve come to an agreement that if we can find another mate for ‘physical affection’ as he calls it, that as long as they’re OK with being part of this whole mess that neither of us have a problem with that.”
Jeanne coughed and gulped down her wine, her face rapidly turning a shade of crimson that Kiara had never seen on her. “So uh... have you uh... found any, umm, anyone to-” Jeanne trailed off. Kiara, grinning from ear to ear replied “Staff Sergeant Jett, are you asking me what I think you’re asking me?” Jeanne fumbled with her glass and mumbled “I mean, if you’re into that sort-” Jeanne wasn’t able to finish her sentence as Kiara was already kissing her, pressing both of their bodies into the couch. Maybe this mission hadn’t been a total disaster.

u wanted prompts: steve takes it upon himself to stand outside planned parenthood clinics and fight people who attack and harass pp
Listen, I see and observe your ‘Steve’ upthere, but I raise you Forty Percent of the Marvel Universe because I am bitterabout the current direction of the whole comics thing at the moment. *Max Rockatansky voice* I guarantee you, ahundred and sixty days out, there’s nothing but salt. Anyway, if you’ve read my Claire Temple AO3fic that may or may not get more stuff added to it when I feel inspired, thisis technically that universe, but prior knowledge IS NOT REQUIRED, okay goodlet’s do it. Also I believe that moviecanon only applies to me when I feel like it so everyone is in New York and theAvengers live in the Tower, no one is dead and everything is F I N E. I dunno, this is only like the first half ofa much longer thing that covers this whole day and, if I had my way, would be afull-blown elaborate media fic with tweets and Trish’s show andeverything. But here, it’s real long, soI left it alone. It’s on AO3.
Steve got the call pre-dawn, just as he was leaving the Tower for hisrun.
“Captain Rogers,” FRIDAY said politely from the ceiling, “you arereceiving a call from an unknown number with a New York City area code.”
“If it’s a reporter, let it ring out,” Steve said, knotting his runningshoes.
“Reporters do not have your personal cell number, Captain,” FRIDAY said, and there was a trace of genteel condescension in the artificial voice thistime that made Steve grin down at the floor.
“Where in the City?”
“Hell’s Kitchen.”
Steve frowned, straightening up. “That might be Daredevil in trouble. You better put it through to my phone. Thanks, FRIDAY.”
“Of course, Captain,” FRIDAY said. Steve’s top-of-the-line, not-on-the-open-market-yet, Jesus-Cap-does-your-shit-phone-even-text-here-let-me-replace-itStarkPhone rang, a jaunty tune that sounded distinctly like the NationalAnthem, and even more distinctly like the foreboding of Bucky getting his asskicked.
“Steve Rogers,” Steve answered, hitting the green button and raising thephone to his ear.
“Um…hi, Captain Rogers,” the voice on the other end saidhesitantly. “This is Claire Temple, Idon’t know if you remember me, but–”
“Of course I remember you, Miss Temple,” Steve said, grinning. “You pulled a piece of rebar out of my chest, hard to forget a first meeting like that.” She laughed, the same slightly worn chuckle he remembered from her. “And it’s just Steve, please, ma’am. I think once you’ve been up close andpersonal with someone’s lung tissue you can probably skip the ‘Captain.’”
“Fair enough, Steve. Then, Claireis fine,” she returned, a smile adding an audible lilt to her voice. “I got your number off Jessica, who I thinkgot it off Matt, I hope it’s okay that I called.”
Steve nodded, automatic and pointless. “Sure, Claire. D’you mind if I ask what fire’s burning down Hell’s Kitchen at,uh–” He twisted his watch and squintedthrough the dim dawn light streaming through the wide window occupying a wallof the penthouse entry way. “What, five-forty-eightin the morning on a weekend? I thought Iwas the only person who got up this early, ‘cept for Sam.”
“Oh, no, nothing urgent, I just.” Claire stopped and sighed, and Steve pictured her pinching the bridge ofher nose, brow furrowed and eyes closed as she ducked her head—he could tallythe number of hours he’d spent in the Night Nurse’s company on his fingers andstill have plenty left, but he knew the face she pulled when she was frustratedby the way her life was panning out. “Listen, I have a weird fucking request from an old friend of mine whocalled me at five in the A-M, and I don’t have the greatest decision-makingtrack record at that hour, so I called you.”
“We specialize in weird fucking requests here at Avengers Tower, ma’am,”Steve said dryly. “Unless you ask my PRteam, then we specialize in truth, justice, and the American Way, whatever thefuck that means these days.”
Claire barked a laugh and let out another huff of breath. “Well, you remember how you got arrestedalong with like twelve other people at that BLM protest a couple weeks back?”
“Sam got arrested too,” Steve said defensively. It had been a long talk with Nicole when she fished the pair of them out of theholding cell, mostly directed at Steve—Sam, she had said with supreme disinterest, was some other poor sucker’s problem. Nicole, the last surviving member of the PR team assigned to theAvengers right out of the gate, was now the captain of Steve’s personalpublicity squadron, or so she liked to call herself, and she had Opinions aboutthe sort of trouble he usually got into.
“Yeah, but nobody I know has the Falcon’s phone number,” Claire pointedout. “But so the point is—Jesus Christ,I can’t believe this is what my life is like now. Anyway. My old friend, she and I knew each other in college. We haven’t talked much, but it turns out thatshe’s helping to manage and run a women’s health clinic about an hour or sonorth of the City.”
Steve had a sneaking suspicion that this was about to become the nextthing Nicole was going to yell at him for. “Yeah?”
He heard Claire take a deep breath and hold it, followed by a couple ofhollow thudding sounds that he guessed were her head against the wall beforeshe blurted, “She’s been picketed for three days by the local pro-lifejackoffs, and yesterday they were scaring off the girls who came to gettreated. She needs a couple peoplewilling to play escort. I already askedLuke but he doesn’t have today free, and Matt wasn’t answering his phone soprobably he’s not back yet, so if you know anyone who can take the day…?”
Head tipped back against the wall, Steve grinned up at the ceiling. “I can think of one or two.”
“Steve,” Claire said, clearly warning him, “if your publicist comesafter me next–”
“Don’t worry about it, Claire,” Steve said easily. “Nicole knows what I’m like, and besides, FoxNews started trying to take cheap shots at Bucky again. Gotta give them something else to talkabout.”
“Jesus Christ,” Claire said again, sounding close to awestruck horror.
“Listen, you text the address of your friend’s place to this number andI’ll see what I can do.”
“This is the worst solution I could have come up with.”
“Cheer up,” Steve said, almost bouncing on his toes. “This is a win-win situation, your friendgets help and I get to do something more interesting than playing Hide ‘n Seekwith a bunch of fuckin’ spies.”
“Who the hell lets you peopleout in public?”
“I’ll talk to you later, Claire, I’m going to go ask around,” Stevesaid, and hung up on Claire’s inarticulate sound of distress.
Two hours later, a nondescript van spilled out a number of people ontothe asphalt between a line of sign-bearing protesters and the brick façade of alow-slung building bearing a sign that read LacksFamily Planning Institute. Steve wasthe one to walk up and knock on the still-locked front door of the building, dressed in a pearly grey shirt with #IStandWithPPin purple across his chest. The womanwho appeared was heavyset, quite pretty, with smooth dark skin and a round facethat was crinkled into a distracted frown.
“Sorry,” she called through the glass, absentminded. “We’re clo—what the fuck?” she blurted, hereyes snapping up to Steve’s face and the frown melting away into shock.
“Hi,” Steve said, grinning. “Clairecalled us, said you needed some escorts?”
“Who the hell–?”
“You’re Shauna, right, ma’am?”
“You’re…”
“Yes, ma’am, that’s me. Could youunlock the door, please?”
Shauna’s hand dropped to the lock and she blindly fumbled the door open, lips parted in confusion. “Listen,” shesaid as she dragged the door open, “is Claire fucking with me? I mean…”
“No, ma’am, I got the impression she was running out of options and shehad my number,” Steve said, offering his hand. “Steve Rogers, but you can call me Steve, it’s a pleasure.”
“Shauna Harrison,” she said, numbly shaking his hand, and there was along beat as she stared at Steve and he smiled at her. Steve, when she had released his fingers, folded his hands behind him in a tidy parade rest, waiting patiently for her tomuster up a sentence. “If you don’t mindme asking,” she finally asked, “how the fuckdoes Claire Temple have Captain America’s phone number and—is that the Black Widow?”
Steve glanced over his shoulder to where Natasha was smiling at aprotester whose sign read Adoption, NotAbortion. Natasha’s smile was verythin-lipped and very toothy, like a lioness lazily baring her teeth to a pinnedantelope, and the protester’s sign was trembling a little more than the lightbreeze could justify.
“Yeah, Nat has some opinions,” Steve said. “Claire did me a favor one time, she knowssome good folks. Some other people mightshow up later–”
“There are six of you,” Shauna interrupted flatly.
“Yeah, we picked up Kitty and Piotr on the way.” Steve raised a hand, and Kitty paused in herserious conversation with her teammate to wave excitedly at him, her hairpulled back into a neat ponytail. Allsix of them had opted for civvies—Pepper had helpfully pointed out that it wasprobably better to do this as private citizens—but nothing could make Piotr’ssix-three self look less intimidating. Bucky hadn’t even pretended to try for a disguise, dressed in a menacingexpression and a tank top that said Women’sRights are Human Rights in pink block letters, his arm whirring softly asthe plates shifted. Sam, standing besidehim and watching the protesters slowly evaluate the new arrivals, had droppedhis smile for an expression of outright disdain.
Steve pressed his lips together to hide a smug grin. “I’ll keep everyone out of trouble, ma’am.”
Shauna blinked at him in shock, and laughed, sounding baffled. “Okay.”
“And I think Miss Walker wanted to swing by around noon for an interview, should I direct her to you?”
“Miss—Trish Walker?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Shauna leaned back against the door, one hand pressed to her chest. “I mean. Sure thing.”
“Great,” Steve said, smiling. “Ifyou need any help with anything at all, you just grab one of us, all right, ma’am?”
“You know how to escort girls?”
“Yes, ma’am, Natasha has some experience.”
“Of course she does,” Shauna said, and glanced at her watch. “Well, it’s eight-oh-three, so the first onesshould start showing up soon. I’ll justgo…?” She jerked a thumb over hershoulder, trailing off.
Steve nodded, and rested a hand on her shoulder as he gave her his mostreassuring don’t-worry-really-I-know-what-I’m-doingsmile, silently appreciating that Bucky was too far away to offer commentary onit. “We can take care of ourselves, ma’am,and if you come out and don’t recognize someone working with us, don’t worryabout it. We’re expecting at very leastHawkeye within the next two hours, and probably some others later today.”
“Naturally,” Shauna said, dazed, turning on her heel to walk back into thebuilding as Steve turned back to the others.
“Are we good?” Sam asked, spreading his hands as if to say sometime today, Rogers.
Bucky, ever willing to call Steve out, just went ahead and drawled, “Wheneveryou’re ready, Stevie.”
“Yeah, we’re good,” Steve confirmed. “Nat, did you say you had Sue Storm’s number?”
“Well,” Natasha said consideringly, “I said I could get ahold of her, that’s… not the same thing, but yes. Sheand Ben might come give us a hand.”
“Oh, we know Johnny,” Kitty volunteered brightly, gesturing to Piotrbeside her. “Reed and Sue are out of thestate right now, but Johnny can probably bring Spidey with him, if you can getus in touch with the Baxter Building, Miss Romanoff.”
Steve grinned and nodded. “Great,go ahead and call them. I think Jessicais planning to show up with Trish at noon and—is that a car?” He shifted and looked past the crowd on thegrass and sidewalk. “I think they’reworried about hitting protesters,” he added, dry, and Bucky made a derisivenoise in the back of his throat.
“Oh, well, I can help with that,” Kitty said, all but bouncing on hertoes. “I’ll be back!” And she dove straight through the front rankof the sign-bearing protesters, slipping effortlessly through them as theyyelped in alarm.
“I like her,” Natasha said approvingly.
“Katya does not believe in tact,” Piotr remarked, dry, and Natashagrinned again, just as toothy as before.
“I really like her.”
Bucky drifted up beside Steve, his footsteps unnervingly silent on theasphalt, and said, “So you’re supposed to be keeping us out of trouble today, huh?”
“Well, listen, just don’t actually make physical contact with anyprotesters or cause them any actual injuries,” Steve said. “We’re here to help the people trying to goto the clinic, not pick a fight.”
“Quick, someone check him for a fever,” Sam called, and there was aburst of laughter that rippled warmly through the air as Natasha pulled out hercell phone. Kitty appeared on the road,a wide-eyed woman in her thirties holding her hand as Kitty drew them bothstraight through a sign and a set of hedges. Chapter 21: The Fenhallow Underground
Lana Lupova carried a ring of keys on the right arm of her motorized chair. Emery had only seen her remove it when she didn’t want to make noise, or for special occasions, like school fundraising events and important meetings.
There would be no special occasion today.
“It’s a fat ring of keys and Lana’s going to notice me taking it off her chair,” Emery said to Wes as they pushed their way through the doors of the Asha Gilani Sleep Research Center. They skirted the edge of the lobby, avoiding the gazes of the researchers coming in to start work for the day. “You’ll need to make a distraction. Lana’s office is in the north wing; her lab is in the south wing. She’ll have been in the lab all night, so she’s probably in her office now. The lab doors have tamper alerts—if someone tries to break into them, an alarm goes off.”
“So I need to tamper with the locks.”
“Exactly. I’ll go to her office and start talking to her.” Emery held up her phone. “When I message you, run down to her lab—it’s number three—and set off the alarm. When she hears it, I’ll take the key.”
“Don’t they have cameras? They’ll come after us when I do it.”
“Hide yourself.” She flicked the hood of his sweatshirt.
He pulled it up and glanced behind him, down the south hallway, turning his phone over in his pocket. “Make it quick,” he said.
They split up. Emery strode down the north hallway with quick but controlled steps, smiling at anyone she passed. She knew Dr. Lupova’s office by the cute little flower pinned to the nameplate outside the door. She knocked.
“Come in.”
Lana sat in front of a bank of monitors displaying high-resolution images of the human brain. The stark light washed her face and hair in a ghostly blue. Her keys, the group of them as thick as Emery’s fist, hung motionless from the chair arm. Attached to them was her school ID card.
Emery sidled up close to her. “What’s up, Lupova?”
“It’s impolite to read over someone’s shoulder, Emery.” Lana’s tone was pleasant, and she continued her work. The screen to her right flipped between images of a brain with different sections lit up in bright orange. At the corner of each image was a label, a date and time and the name Warwick. “What variety of trouble are you getting into today?”
Emery kept her phone in her hand turned toward her leg, her finger hovering over Send. “I really resent the assumption here, I want you to know.” Emery paused, looking down, and scuffed her foot on the floor. She made her voice small. “Actually…I was wondering, um…”
Lana looked around.
“So, Wes and I were in the Dream for a while. I know it’s not good for dreamhunters to spend a lot of time there. I was just wondering if, like…” Emery let her fingers play along the arm of the chair. The keys hung from a carabiner; she’d have to be quick. “Things have been weird since we got back. Time moves too slow, and I feel this weird weight on my chest. Does being in the Dream for that long really hurt you? Like, put you closer to your Insanity Prime?”
“Oh, Em.” Lana took her hands off the keyboard. “It’s certainly not good for you. I’ve known hunters who have spent longer in the Dream, but they were older than you, and much more experienced in how to handle themselves inside, not to mention more prepared. If you’re worried, we can run some tests—”
Emery hit Send. A heartbeat later, an alert siren blared from Lana’s computer, and a bright red indicator lit up on the top left of all her screens. She whipped around, eyes darting from one screen to the next, and snapped, “Oh, not again! But we caught him!”
As Lana turned to the door, Emery stepped out of her way, sliding behind her. She squeezed and unhooked the carabiner in the same smooth motion. The alert was too loud to hear the jangling of the keys. Lana disappeared into the hall.
Emery ran for it.
~
Wes met her in front of the administration building. They hustled up the long flight of steps, the quotes beneath their feet flashing in the morning sunlight.
“Someone definitely saw me” Wes said. His hood was still up. “We won’t have that long.”
“Lupova sounded like it had happened before. They might not know it was you if they didn’t see your face. And you didn’t actually go in, right? Maybe they thought you were just a student playing a prank.”
“You don’t think Dr. Lupova realized her keys are gone by now?”
“We’ll be downstairs by the time anyone gets to us.” Emery had already singled out several keys that looked like they would fit the size and age of the elevator lock. She held her fingers around the key ring to hold them separate.
Instead of going through the front doors and facing the threat of running into Grandpa Al, Emery pulled Wes around to the east side of the building, where an access door led to the maintenance room. The maintenance staff often left it propped open with a bucket when they were going in and out a lot for work on the buliding, and today they were bringing in new cleaning supplies in preparation for the winter.
Emery and Wes slipped into the maintenance room and immediately ducked behind a tall metal shelf of cleaning supplies. The room was long and rectangular, the door into the admin building set in the wall on the far end of the shelf, and a second after they hid, a set of maintenance workers tromped through carrying another roll of carpet. Emery and Wes crept parallel to them in the opposite direction, and when the workers went through the outside door, darted out of the maintenance room and into the back hallways of the administration building.
The hallway circled the perimeter of the first floor. Most of the rooms here were offices for other Hypnos State employees; Grandpa Al’s aides, the department heads, and the marketing department that made promotional material for the Hypnos Centers across the city.
The elevator was in the front of the building, near the receptionist’s desk. Emery kept the keys hidden behind her back as they walked, still smiling at everyone they came across. They stopped at the corner and peered into the lobby; empty except for David the receptionist and Sarah Stainer, who was standing in front of his desk in foul-smelling, wet clothing, arguing with him.
“Just set up the meeting, David, it’s not a hard thing to do!” She waved a sopping shoe at him. She was only wearing one now, and her dark sock was oozing onto the hardwood. “Someone around here needs to talk about preventative measures for childhood nightmares—this is the second time I’ve been to the Millers’ this month, and that girl is notorious for doubling up on nightmares when the first one has been taken care of. This is ridiculous—”
Moving slowly, Emery crept around the corner and hit the elevator button.
“I’ll see what I can do,” David stuttered, “but the dean is pretty busy right now. Have you tried one of the Center directors? Maybe they could help—”
“Oh yes, because the Center directors have as much pull as Aldrich Ashworth.” Stainer threw her hands up. “I just got covered in sewer water, put me on his schedule!”
The elevator dinged and slid open. Emery yanked Wes inside, hit the door close button, and began frantically trying keys in the lock beside the door for the basement level.
“She’ll definitely know they’re gone by now,” Wes said.
“Shut up,” Emery hissed.
One small and silver key slid into the lock. Emery cranked it sideways and slammed her fist on the basement button. The button remained lit, and the elevator shuddered and began to move down.
“Yes!”
The bright red 1 on the elevator display changed to XX. Wes crossed his arms over his chest, frowning.
“What’s the plan after we get out of the elevator?”
“No idea,” Emery said. “I know the place down here is big, like another building underground, but I’ve never been down here. Kind of winging it.”
Wes closed his eyes slowly, went very still, then opened them again. “I don’t know why that surprises me.”
“Look, I’m pretty sure no matter what happens, my Grandpa is going to find out I went down here. Even if we don’t run into anyone, they probably have security cameras. When I said I didn’t want to get you in trouble, I meant it—we are definitely getting reamed out after this.”
“As long as we get to talk to him,” Wes said.
“I agree.”
The elevator stopped. Opened. They looked down a long stone hallway lined with harsh overhead lights. At the far end was another door.
There was no point in playing it cool anymore, so they jogged to the far end. As they approached the door, it slid open, revealing a dark, square stairwell and a metal staircase that wrapped deep down inside it. The only sign of the bottom was a small red light casting a glow across the floor.
Wes made an unhappy noise. Emery started down the stairs.
Their footsteps clanged and echoed down the shaft. At the bottom as another thick door, but this one didn’t automatically slide open. To the left of the door was a scanner, the glowing red light. Emery fumbled for Lana’s ID card on the key ring and shoved its bar code under the scanner. The scanner beeped. The door opened.
The hallway beyond that door was bigger than the first, brighter, still paneled in stark grays. It opened up at the end into a circular hub where several other tunnel hallways met, some leading to more doors, others to stairwells that went up or down. Above each tunnel was a label etched into the stone.
Laboratories
Communication
Bunker
Containment
Control
“Containment.” Wes pointed
Emery looked around the room. “But…what are these others? Bunker? Communications? A bunker for what, is the world going to end? And communications with who? Who do they need to talk to that they can’t do it above ground?”
“I don’t know,” Wes said, “but I don’t want to stand here longer than we have to, because who knows how many people are down here and might come walking through.”
Emery let him pull her down the containment tunnel. At the end was another one of the stairwells. This one went down, like the first, but not as far; there were landings after every flight of stairs, a door or two at each one.
“How are we supposed to know where he is from here?” Wes asked. “It could be any one of these doors, they’re not labeled.”
“Always do the one that’s hardest to get through,” Emery said. At the bottom was another door with another scanner, and Emery went all the way down to it. Past it was a bright hallway, perfectly straight, longer than the hallway after the elevator and lined on one side with doors. The other wall was flat and blank. Emery had to put a hand up to shield her eyes until they adjusted. Each door was heavy and metal and windowless; each one had a small plaque to its right. Twenty or thirty doors, all identical.
And planted on a folding chair in front of the door at the very far end, flipping through an issue of Sports Illustrated, was Marcia.
As soon as the door opened, she looked up, saw them there, and nearly ripped her magazine in half.
“Wait!” Wes held his hands up. “Wait, Marcia. We came down here for answers because no one’s telling us anything.”
Marcia stood and threw the magazine onto the chair so hard the chair folded in on itself. She was still wearing her hunting armor, though she had no weapon out. About a hundred clips held back her riot of orange hair. “Why are you the one talking, Wes?” she snapped. “This was clearly Ashworth’s idea. How’d you get down here?” She glanced down. “Are those Lana’s keys?”
Emery shoved the keys behind her back and jabbed a finger toward the far door. “That guy had a drawing of my doppelgänger in his dream. That has to mean something. He was following me. He was coming after me. I need to know why. You must have spoken to him—hasn’t he said anything?”
Something in Emery’s voice seemed to knock the steam out of Marcia. She huffed, planting her hands on her hips and rolling her eyes. “Hypnos’s balls, Ashworth, he’s not coming after you. If he’d said anything to me about your doppelgänger, I would have told you—I’m not a complete monster. He’s not talking to any of us. Even me.”
“Then let me try,” Emery said. “He might talk to me.”
“He’ll talk circles around you is what he’ll do,” Marcia grumbled.
“Who is he?” Wes asked. “He used to go here, right? You knew him. Other people here must have, too, and the dean made it sound like he was really dangerous.”
“He was stealing sleeping sand from the research labs. That’s why they wanted him brought in. But he’s not—” Marcia’s cuff screen lit up. She glanced at it, eyebrow raised, then tapped it once. “Hey, Lupova.”
“Are they down there?” Lana’s voice echoed in the narrow hallway.
“Yeah, they’re here.”
“Those weaselly, snot-nosed, sticky-fingered little fu—”
Marcia tapped another button. The speaker cut off, and Marcia held the cuff to her ear with a cool look and another raised eyebrow. Lana’s staticky voice, now unintelligible, carried on for almost an entire minute before she petered out enough to let Marcia speak again.
“I’ll get you your keys,” Marcia said. “In the meantime, I’ve got control of them. I’ll report it to the dean, don’t worry. Yes. Yes. I don’t think it has anything to do with the cult. No, he still hasn’t. I don’t know, but I’ve thought about it.” She paused again. “Well, if you say it, L, it must work.”
Marcia hung up. “I have never heard her say that many curse words at one time. What did you do, hit her over the head and run off with the keys?”
“Played to her sympathy, actually,” Emery said.
Marcia nodded appreciatively. “Lupova agrees with you. You might be able to get him to talk. The dean had a few important conference calls this morning, so at most it’s going to be about fifteen minutes before he hears about an attempted break-in at the research center. Maybe less if someone’s watching the security footage down here and sees you.”
She motioned up, where a small security camera sat nestled in the corner of the wall and ceiling above the door.
“But—” Wes looked back around. “They’re going to know you helped us.”
Marcia shrugged. “If you can get him to talk, it’ll be worth it. Fifteen minutes.”
“That’s plenty,” Emery said.
“And you fork over those keys.”
Emery did, happily.
Marcia led them back down the hallway, kicked the collapsed chair out of the way, and started tapping in a code on a panel beside the door.
“Should we be wearing armor?” Wes asked.
“No.” Marcia waved an airy hand, scoffing. “He’s harmless.”
Harmless was not the word Emery would have given to either the Sandman or his dreams. Her knuckle throbbed in response.
“You still haven’t told us who he is,” Wes said.
“His name is Klaus Warwick. He was called the Sandman around campus when we were still in classes. He’s got a lot of dangerous skills, but he’d never hurt anyone.” Marcia leaned in close to a port above the keypad. It scanned her eye. Several locks inside the door clicked open, and she straightened up and sighed.
“He was my partner.”

How to Change A Door Lock
Changing a door lock is a challenging task, and we won't always advise a non-professional to do it. As if you are not careful, it can do permanent damage to your lock or the door. But it might be necessary for you to do it by own while moving into a new home or experience a burglary. If you do not want to replace the whole set, there are kit available for the same brand, which you can use to rekey the lock. It is also easy to repair the deadbolt if needed. Purchase a piece of equipment labeled for your lock's brand.
How to Replace Knob Lock:
The next step is to remove the latch. You need to unhitch the two screws that secure the latch plate in place.
There will be a cardboard template with instructions on how to fit the lock onto the door.
Put this template above the hole in your door and see if it matches. If it does not match exactly with the hole, then the lock you bought is wrong.
If the template matches precisely, use the new screws through the holes and secure the latch with the door. You should use the original screws that came with your kit.
The last step is to put the door locks together. Put the outside knob with the keyhole and the inside knob on their corresponding sides. Then slide them through the lock chamber toward each other. They will meet in the middle and connect. You don't need to force them together; they will slide together easily.
The first thing you need to do is purchasing a rekeying kit that is designated for your lock's brand. You can purchase online or from hardware and home improvement shops. But read the instructions thoroughly before you buy it.
The next step is to remove the exterior knobs. There will be a thin, wire-like tool that you can use to remove the knobs.
Unlock the door by inserting your key.
Use the wire-like tool on the interior doorknob to release the knobs and then pull the outside knob out of the lock.
After removing the exterior lock, check if any plastic or metal is holding the lock cylinder in place. Push them out and put pressure on the key - the lock cylinder will make pop from the back of the knob.
Use the wrench-like tool to remove the retainer ring. Then you can slide the device around the horseshoe-shaped ring. After that, turn the tool and pop off the ring.
The kit includes a cylinder follower or tube-shaped tool as well. You can use it to slide the plug out of the housing.to pop out the plug. You will have to push it through the cylinder housing from the side opposite the keyhole.
After that, remove the old pins from the cylinder plug. The instructions manual will show how to remove your plug's old pins thoroughly.
After removing the old lock pins, slide the new key into the keyhole. There will be colored or numbered pins in your new kit. The instructions will include a code. Insert the pins into the plug's slots using the tweezers included in the kit so that they match the code.
The final step is to reassemble the lock. After installing the pin, push the plug back into the cylinder housing. Slide the retainer ring back into place. Then pop the cylinder back into the doorknob and replace any plastic or metal sheets.
Push the exterior door back into its slot in the lock. Rotate the key till it the knob pops and secures into place.
The first step is to remove the faceplate of the old deadbolt. After removing the screws, either pull the interior faceplate out or rotate it counter-clockwise and remove it. Then pull out or twist to remove the outer plate.
The next step is to remove the set plate and bolt. The set plate and bolt are attached to the edge of the door with screws. Once you remove the screws, pull out the set plate and bolt to uninstall the old deadbolt.
After removing the deadbolt, pop out the cylinder housing from the exterior faceplate .then rekey it as you would a knob lock. If the key is lost, you can take the parts to a locksmith and have a new key made.
At last install, the new deadbolt's set plate and bolt to replace the entire lock, insert the bolt through the hole where the old bolt fit.
Finally, you need to attach the new faceplates and secure them with screws.
