Planet of the Apps: Gary Vaynerchuk and… some other people you saw in other stuff once.

I feel I need to add a comment on Apple’s pilot, Apple Music based, TV show.  I was seriously looking forward to shredding it.  Alba.  Paltrow.  Whatever William’s last name is.  It seemed too ridiculous to contemplate these people trying to teach about app development.  Yet more of the unpalatable modern misconception that being a celebrity assigns them some kind of authority on things.

But, as I hoped, Gary carried the show.  It was immediately clear he understood apps, app development and the app marketplace.  He provided genuine mentoring and guidance to his team.  He helped them react to the market and adapt their ideas quickly - and he did so with, let’s call it, direct language.  In contrast, Jessica Alba showed the knowledge an experience you might expect of someone who’s qualifications for judging apps include playing and The Invisible Woman.  In fact, when she and her AR app developer stood before actual venture capitalists, she did indeed look like she wanted desperately to disappear.

Episode two and it’s William and Gwyneth’s turn.  With our Gary chipping in with real world technology-type questions (thanks G), the others seemed to be able to participate a little more if they were capable of relating directly to the product.  William is a notorious gadget aficionado and, whilst his own experiments have met mixed success, he was quick to into the idea of a pet-based exercise motivation app.  Having been picked for it, he then descended upon it with all of the enthusiasm and structure of a four year old after a fuck-ton of chocolate buttons.  “Hey what if it fought?”, “Hey what if they had armour?”, “Hey what if I could talk to it”, “Hey can I have more candy?”.   You could actually see the developer guy realising that men who wear gold shoes are a little bit off the wall.  That said… funded.

Gwyneth opted for an app that brought together mainstream shops into a single app and kept the experience tight even through point of sale.  That was a great app before she arrived.  Gwyneth provided little or no input (or the show didn’t give her the coverage, which is possible) and then was greatly moved when the app got funding - in fact to the point of tears.  Seemed the tiniest bit over the top, if I’m honest.  Perhaps she was acting.  She acts you know.

So projecting the structure forward, Jessica and Gwyneth will be taking anything related to shopping or family products,  William will be going for quirky and shiny and Gary will be picking up the credible and the plausible.

Indeed I can sound all sarcastic and cynical about the whole thing… but… I’m watching it.

Discussing the actual programme as a foray, I have to say that Apple execution on it was pretty good.  The TV show was served seamlessly within the Music app.  In exactly the format as listening to an album.  You can add the series and stream or download the content.  Under the new TV & Films tab, I can see Planet of the Apps there under TV Programmes, but I can also see an “Unknown Episode” which is “2010 The Year We Make Contact” which is a film I bought ages ago.  Under Films it says “Films you add to your Library or purchase from the iTunes Store will appear here” but my current purchases are not present.  Perhaps this is work in progress?

Appearing on Planet of the Apps was a life-changing experience, presenting to Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gary Vaynerchuk and Will.i.am is an adventure I would not even of fathomed when we started App Press. 

The show can be viewed on demand anytime on Apple Music streaming service. As part of the show, App Press is on the homepage of the App Store, under the Planet of The Apps central brick.

My team was the real superstars in this experience. Without them, I would not have been setup for the success we experienced.
