surely there is balance to be found between acknowledgement of harmful amatonormativity and the fact that stories with no romance are worth telling and that not everyone needs to date or have sex or get married and recognition that romance is a historically derided genre specifically because of its association with women and an understanding that romance is as capable of literary merit as any other genre. surely you can have both

#I love romance stories and always have not gonna be embarrassed about it #I love stories that center interpersonal relationships! I love platonic bonds between friends!#and I like shipping it's fun! we can enjoy a bond that's platonic in one context and romantic in another!#god I do not understand the absolutism that exists in fandom. “can't they just be friends instead of lovers??” can we not enjoy both???#genuinely this attitude makes no sense to me. what's the point in limiting character dynamics to only be one thing #when I see other people shipping characters whose bond I firmly interpret as platonic my reaction is not “can we leave them alone?#does everything have to be romantic?“ because I have the magical power to scroll away #and on the opposite side romance can be equally “limiting”. it's really sad when people aren't able to get invested in platonic dynamics #as if that makes them less interesting. friendships in fiction are so worth talking about and they certainly aren't inferior to romances #the point is that the hierarchy is unnecessary. no kind of relationship is superior or more worth striving for than the other #and lastly there is the magical in-between of “not platonic not romantic but a secret third thing”. very very fun I eat that shit up #idk. maybe I'm the one with the weird attitude on shipping but I guess the point (like always) is We can have nuance! as a treat #I've always really really loved danganronpa's approach to romance. they're hinted at heavily but they're soooo not the main thing.#with some exceptions they're generally quite peripheral and I think that's great. wish more series were like that #baye.txt

I know I have not been very active on tumblr of late, but I saw something that has angered me enough that I feel compelled to say something.

Empathy is NOT a sin.

Let me repeat that for those who didn't understand me the first time.

Empathy is NOT a sin.

Empathy leads to compassion. When you show someone compassion, what they do with that compassion is not your burden to bear.

Empathy is what allows a person to see a stranger struggling with something heavy and imagine ourselves in their place. Doing so allows us to realize that they might want help lifting it, because we would if the roles were reversed.

Compassion is what moves us to actually go over and help them.

And mercy? Mercy is what stays our hand when a person makes a mistake or does something we don't agree with. Mercy is recognizing that we have the capacity to be cruel, but that we DON'T HAVE TO EXERCISE THAT ABILITY.

Mercy is not laughable, or worthy of disdain. Compassion is absolutely necessary if we are to remain human beings. And empathy is never a sin.
