Would anyone be interested in starting like a Women of Stranger Things server with me? I love all the male characters, but sometimes it feels like the gals get drowned out disproportionately in fandom spaces, and I think it could be fun to create a space where the girls can really shine. It would have spaces for headcanons, fanart and fanfic, just general chit chat about the girlies of Hawkins (and Lenora), etc. It would also have designated 18+ spaces for anything that might....find itself there...👀
Anyway hit me up if you're interested in starting that with me, joining, modding, any of that jazz!

Synopsis: It's Spring of 1985, 7 years after Ricky/Three and Marcy broke out of Hawkins Lab. Constantly on the move for fear of being caught, the duo attempt to find closure by locating any other special kids that might have also escaped the lab. When their search bring them to Kali/Eight and her gang, they discover a dark secret: Jamie/Nine, Marcy's sister, who was presumed dead, is actually alive and locked away in an institution where she has gone insane. As Nine's powers begin to reawaken after years of suppression, Ricky and Marcy must now find and rescue her before it's too late.......
Observations:
I'm in two minds about this comic.
On the one hand, it's a big improvement from Stranger Things SIX. The artwork is vibrant, the story is more focused, the characters and their motivations are better fleshed-out, and there's more of a personal stake here compared to its predecessor.
On the other hand, the main issue I had with SIX which prevented me from fully enjoying it is unfortunately present with Into the Fire as well.
I'll start with my thoughts on the story and characters.
Unlike with SIX, where I found myself indifferent to Francine/Six due to her lack of a distinct personality and her bare-bones backstory, I was a lot more interested in Ricky and Marcy during their journey here. I enjoyed their sibling dynamic, with Ricky acting as the protective big brother to Marcy while Marcy acted as the impulsive yet supportive younger sister. Their interactions during the comic were sweet.

The plot with Ricky and Marcy discovering Jamie/Nine's survival and trying to rescue her was emotionally investing. The story is personal and smaller-scaled compared to the overarching arc of Stranger Things, but it works better than what they tried to do in the previous comic where they shoehorned in huge mytharc pieces from the show (i.e. the Demogorgon, the Upside Down, Terry Ives failed attempt to rescue El from the lab, etc) which not only screwed with the show's continuity, but also was poorly tied-in to that comic's story. Neither Ricky, Marcy, nor Jamie know about the Upside Down, and even Francine/Six who had brief visions of the Demogorgon while at the lab died before she ever found out what it all truly meant. The clumsy way those plot elements were incorporated into that comic made it feel out-of-place for a story focusing on minor characters who were never going to have a major role on the show.
Here, it's a lot easier to care because Into The Fire does a better job focusing on the relationships between the characters and how much they mean to one another. It doesn't need pieces of the mytharc to be interesting or relevant. The ending especially with Jamie and Marcy's reunion was one of the best moments, both visually and story-wise:

The core theme of Stranger Things has been about the ties that bind and finding people who will accept you for who you are. Whatever my mixed feelings about this comic are, they captured that theme well with Jamie and Marcy's reunion.
Adding onto this, the artwork is beautiful, especially in regards to Jamie/Nine's hallucinations, which convey a creepy gothic mood:

Kali is present in this story (as indicated on the cover), but unlike the previous comic where she and El were glorified cameos, she actually has a plot-related reason for being here: It's revealed she (inadvertently) served as the catalyst for Nine/Jamie's descent into madness. When Jamie/Nine became depressed after believing Ricky and Marcy abandoned her at Hawkins Lab, Brenner forced Kali to use her powers on Nine to create a fantasy world as a way of distracting Nine from what happened. Unfortunately, it worked too well, and an already mentally/emotionally fragile Nine bought into the illusion to the point she believed it was real, and any attempt to snap her out of it was met with hostility:

There's a depressing theme in Kali's arc, both in this comic, the show, and the novel Suspicious Minds, of Kali being used by other people to further their own goals. Is it any wonder she became embittered and angry later on in her life?
I am curious where Kali is currently on the show. Last time she was seen was in season 2 when her gang ran from the cops in Chicago. This comic has them hiding out in a barn elsewhere while they continue to hunt government employees who worked at the lab. At one point, Kali even offers Ricky/Three the opportunity to join them on their revenge quest. While he initially refuses, the ending of the comic where he compels Dr. Morris (the doctor who hid Jamie/Nine at a different facility) to commit suicide suggests he might end up taking Kali on her offer:

But that's in the comic's continuity. In the show...........it's unclear where Kali's story is going.
Something I've wondered about since season 4 is whether Brenner ever found out what Kali had been doing since she escaped. He was likely aware she was alive, but did he have knowledge of Kali's revenge quest against him and his colleagues from Hawkins Lab? I'm assuming he did since Brenner knew some of the orderlies and other personnel from the lab that Kali targeted and killed. On top of that, Ray Carroll (the orderly from "The Lost Sister") told El and Kali under interrogation that Brenner was alive, implying he was still in contact with him at that time. It makes me believe the top-secret silo where Brenner and Dr. Owens housed the Nina Project wasn't just off-the-grid because they were hiding it from Colonel Sullivan and his cronies, but because they were also trying to evade Kali and her gang.
However, this is just speculation. Whether or not the Duffer Brothers are going to bring back Kali for season 5 is unclear. I've expressed before in previous posts that I hope she comes back and her story gets the closure its been lacking since season 2. She's an interesting character, and I'll be sad if the writing lets her go to waste.
Speaking of Kali's story in this comic vs the show..............let's talk about the deviations in the Hawkins Lab arc.
I have mixed feelings about the way Hawkins Lab has been handled on the show vs the comics. On the one hand, I'm disappointed the show never truly expanded on any of the other psychokinetic kids besides El, Kali, and Vecna. Part of the reason I took an interest in the comics was because they did this with characters like Ricky, Francine, and Jamie. It wasn't perfect, but it was nice seeing different characters with a variety of unique powers. While I wish Kali had been given a bigger role (or even her own comic/graphic novel with a story centered on her), I am happy she wasn't completely forgotten about in supplementary materials.
On the other hand, I prefer the set-up for Hawkins Lab on the show. The backstory of Henry/One/Vecna, his imprisonment at Hawkins Lab for 20 years, his subsequent massacre of the other special kids, and his banishment by El to the Upside Down is one of the best story arcs in season 4, if not the entire show. Even before the reveal of the massacre, there had been implications that the other kids were no longer at the lab by the time El escaped. I didn't even mind the backstory of El being bullied by the other special kids when she was growing up since it's hinted at in her conversation with Mike in season 1 when she confronts him about being harassed by Troy and James:
From "Holly, Jolly" (Season 1, Episode 3):
Mike: I was tripped by this mouth breather, Troy, okay? Eleven: Mouth breather? Mike: Yeah, you know…..a dumb person. A knucklehead. Eleven: Knucklehead? Mike: I don’t know why I just didn’t tell you. Everyone at school knows. I just didn’t want you to think I was such a wastoid, you know? Eleven: Mike… Mike: Yeah? Eleven: I understand.
There was foreshadowing in the early seasons for the big reveals in season 4, which is why I accepted them when they happened.
While I'm not happy about Kali's limited screentime on the show, I still believe the Duffer Brothers plan to bring her back for the final season. Maybe my faith is misplaced and I'll be eating these words later, but considering they specifically went out of their way to spare Kali from Vecna's massacre, as well as how the Stranger Things writers recommended a few days ago that fans rewatch season 2 in preparation for season 5, it's implied she still may play a role in the final battle against Vecna.
And finally, there's the way Brenner ran the lab on the show vs the comics:
In my previous review of SIX, I mentioned there was a strong possibility that said comic wouldn't count as canon due to the way season 4 was written (as well as some major continuity problems in the comic itself). This sequel all but confirms that with the way they wrote Jamie/Nine's backstory.
In the comics, Brenner decided that because of the progress Eleven showed during her time at the lab, the other participants in the program were redundant and were straining resources. As a result, he ordered the staff at Hawkins Lab to dispose of the other special kids. One of the faculty members, Dr. Morris, worked closely with Jamie/Nine, and in an act of consciousness, had Nine transferred off the books to an institution where she was kept under a strict drug regimen to suppress her pyrokinetic abilities.
As of season 4, we know this isn't what happened on the show: Vecna is the one who killed all the special kids. Brenner was a monster and wasn't above manipulating the kids under his care to get results, but he never considered them liabilities, and he didn't "put all of his eggs in one basket" (as Dr. Morris accused him of doing) just so he could focus on Eleven. It wasn't until Vecna slaughtered everyone else and El was the only special kid left that Brenner turned his attention exclusively to her. Even then, it's later revealed that Brenner was using El to try and locate Henry/One/Vecna in the dimension El banished him to.
Personally, if it's a choice between Brenner's motivations on the show vs the comics, I prefer the show since his motivations there make more sense given the circumstances. They were also pragmatic compared to his short-sided decision in the comics to get rid of the other test subjects for not living up to Eleven's potential.
While there are things that could have been improved, I will take the Hawkins Lab arc from the show over the comics.
Overall, I would recommend this comic with some asterisks: If you're looking for something with pretty artwork and an emotionally gripping story set in the Stranger Things universe, then Into the Fire will meet your expectations. However, for reasons I've just described, the comic likely isn't canon due to how parts of its mythology differentiate from the show, and it should possibly be viewed as an alternate continuity because of that.

“Must’ve Been Some Dragon”
M | wc 815 | CW: implied child abuse
@steddieangstyaugust Day 15: Childhood
“Must’ve been some dragon.”
Steve looked up across Eddie’s hospital bed at Wayne Munson. They have been sitting by Eddie’s bedside for almost 10 hours, and this was the first words Wayne has spoken.
“I’m sorry?” Steve asked, readjusting in his seat to look more towards Wayne. Wayne gestured at Eddie’s bandaged body. He was worse for wear. Lost a lot of blood. Steve spent way too long doing chest compressions before they could get his heart beating again. Steve still had Eddie’s dried blood on his fingernails.
“Must have been some dragon,” Wayne repeated. “He — uh — used to come over, scraped or bruised. Said it was a dragon. A dragon gave him those bruises or a dragon scraped his knee.” Wayne’s hand hovered over Eddie’s bandaged arm, wanting to touch him, but not wanting to cause any further harm. “Ego,” He settled his touch on Eddie’s bare hand. “Some dragon.”
Steve let out a soft laugh. “Yeah. It was some dragon.” Steve couldn’t help but turn his attention back to Eddie, peacefully still. “He was brave against the it. The dragon.”
“He always is,” Wayne said, his thumb running across the back of Eddie’s hand.
🐉 ⚔️
Steve was jolted awake. The body next to him — his boyfriend — jerked up, jostling Steve off his chest. Eddie inhaled sharply, burying his face into his hands, body shaking.
“Hey, hey,” Steve whispered, sitting up, his hand rubbing gentle circles on Eddie’s back. “Hey, you’re safe. We’re okay.”
Eddie jostled his head, nodding of some sorts. His head still buried in his hands, his breath still uneven. Steve leaned into Eddie, his head against his shoulder.
“We’re okay,” Steve said.
“W-we’re okay,” Eddie repeated, his breath still shaky.
Steve rubbed circles into Eddie’s back, pressing a kiss to Eddie’s bare shoulder. “Was it the bats?”
Eddie shook his head. “It was — uh — a dragon,” Eddie admitted. He leaned against Steve’s touch, closing his eyes and let out a soft sigh. “I haven’t — I haven’t had that nightmare since I was a kid.”
“You want to talk about it?”
Eddie shook his head, turning to bury himself in Steve’s arms. Steve wrapped his arms around Eddie, holding him securely. “It’s fine. It’s in the past. Don’t need to worry about it anymore.”
“The dragon?” Steve asked softly.
Eddie nodded.
“I’ll protect you,” Steve promised. “No matter the size of dragon, I’ll protect you from it.”
Eddie leaned back to look at Steve. “Any dragon?”
“Any dragon that dares to step in the Munson Kingdom,” Steve said. “I’ll fight for your honor.”
Eddie let out a wet laugh, pressing a quick kiss to Steve’s lips before leaning back into him. “My knight in shining armor.”
Steve pressed a kiss to the top of Eddie’s head, holding him tightly as they both fell back asleep, free from dragons.
🐉 ⚔️
Steve was in the middle of getting ready for his shift at Family Video when there was pounding at the door. Steve sighed, running his hand through his hair.
“Eddie, I swear to god,” he half shouted. Not sure if Eddie could even hear him. He made his way through the Munson’s new trailer — a 2-bedroom that Steve practically moved into, sharing Eddie’s space. “If you forgot your key again —“
Steve opened the front door. A man, slightly taller than him. Bigger too, but not bigger than Hopper. Dark hair, familiar brown eyes, and a soft grin that felt … wrong.
Steve instantly knew who this was.
“I’m looking for Wayne or Eddie,” Ricky Munson said, Steve assumed as politely as he could. Which wasn’t much.
“Wrong house,” Steve said, pushing the door shut. Ricky’s hand shot out, stopping the door. He pushed it open, keeping his arm stretched out.
“I think I’m at the right house,” Ricky said slowly. “You seen my son or brother lately?”
Steve’s eyes dropped to the arm in front of him, holding the door open. To the ink on Ricky’s forearm. A dragon tattoo on his right arm.
And suddenly, everything made sense.
Little Eddie coming to Wayne, bruised and battered by a dragon.
Eddie having nightmares about a dragon hurting him.
And Steve, who promised Eddie that he would protect him from dragons. Of any kind.
Steve reached beside the door, feeling the handle of his nail bat fit perfectly in the palm of his hand.
“Heard a lot about you, Ricky,” Steve said, stepping back, pulling the nail bat behind him. “They’ll be home shortly if you want to come in.”
Ricky gave a sly grin, one that looked innocent at face value but felt slimy. Ricky took the first step into the Munson’s trailer. Steve tightened his grip on his nail bat.
Any dragon, he told Eddie.
Any dragon that dares to step into the Munson kingdom.
Especially the dragon that haunted his childhood.

Just because I was curious, I tabulated the Time Quangle characters/settings. No one played all of their characters, but a few came close. And the only setting they didn't roll was Starstruck.
Brian Murphy played one character the times (Kugrash), one character twice (Big Barry Six), three characters once (Riz, Prince Gerard, and Cody), and didn't play one (Gumbar).
Emily Axford played two characters twice (Fig and Ylfa), and two once (Sofia and Sundry Sidney), and didn't play Jet or Saccharina.
Lou Wilson didn't play in some shows and only played Fabian and Pinocchio.
Zach Oyama played two characters twice (Gorgug and Ricky), and three characters once (Lapin, Skip and Puss in Boots). He didn't play Cumulus Rocks.
Ally Beardsley played two characters twice (Liam and Margaret), two characters once (Kristen and Pete), plus had a bonus cameo from Kristen and their backup character Amanda Maillard.
Siobhan Thompson played two characters twice (Adaine and Rowan**), two characters once (Ruby and Rosamund du Prix), and didn't play Riva, or Iga.
The only setting that had all PC's show up was Spyre. Neverafter was only missing Timothy Goose.
*Corrected a couple of mistakes that were pointed out
**Not actually sure if she has both Misty and Rowan in her bingo hopper, so there's some ambiguity here about whether they "count" as separate characters
#I think I got everything but it's entirely possible I fucked something up#i have no idea who this information is useful to but I wanted to know so#dimension 20#time quangle#d20

Wayne is twenty three. He’s in a bar with all his friends, dunk more beer than he can afford, and is laughing like the darkness of the world couldn’t possibly touch him.
Benny passes him a smoke, Wayne lights it and tosses his zippo across the table to Lonnie, inhales and lets his head feel spacey for a moment, tunes back into the conversation and makes a stupid joke about Ricky’s inability to get a girl in bed.
Piano Man starts playing, and the same thing happens as every other Friday night spent in this grimy bar; they all start to sing.
Half the boys jump up and put on a show, they’re all laughing and tossing used napkins and stubby lids at them, making fun. Hopper swings his arm over Wayne’s shoulder, leans in and points at the concert before them, tells them they look like a bunch of fags and laughs. Wayne laughs too, but his skin feels hot where Hoppers arm lays. His beer and cigarette stained breath is a cool summer breeze when he looks in Wayne’s direction.
Their proximity is nothing unusual, boys leaning on boys when pissed cause they can’t hold each other up, swaying together from the intoxication, brethren leaning in close to crack crude jokes or drunkenly tell each other how much they secretly care.
But to Wayne, it’s different. Hopper is close and it’s like standing beside a roaring flame with your feet nailed into the ground. He wants to run away but he cannot, he couldn’t if he tried.
Hopper looks at him, his laugh falls short and Wayne’s does too, and just as quickly as he leant forward, he pulls away like nothing happened. They go back to sitting beside one another, careful to let no one know of that filth stained secret they keep locked away in the bin of Wayne’s pickup truck, under the star studded sky in the dark of night, not a soul to be seen for miles.
But under the table, their knees touch through thick, dirt stained jeans. Wayne’s heart races, but he wills it not too. He can’t help it though, his heart is aflame.
They sing along to Piano Man with the rest of their friends, skull another pint, and pretend nothing ever happened. And from then on, as it has for months prior, Wayne cannot listen to Piano Man without tearing his heart apart.

Music in the EAH Universe and who listens to them Part 3.
This is just an excuse to try to make music puns and share music I think the characters would listen to. (Some of these are even canon by the books!) I don't even like a majority of these musicians but I am fully convinced of my choices here. I marked in colours the one that are canonically part of the EAH Universe.
Since Tumblr only allows 100 inline links for a post I have to make different parts.

The Ledge #669: Namedropping
Tonight's show features the debut of a new theme. It's a format that I've long considered trying out, and this week seemed like the perfect opportunity. Quite often, new albums that I've come across have included songs with a famous person in the title. Most are tributes to said person, but there are also plenty of these types of tunes that just utilize a name for a song that has nothing to do with that character.
So here we have over two hours of these types of songs. They're priarily new or recently released, but there are four segments devoted to individual artists. First off, we have The Replacements, along with a variety of songs devoted to members of the band. Then at the end we have lengthy sections full of songs about Joe Strummer and Joey Ramone.
I can see this format being utilized every few months. Just like the cover songs episodes, I'll set up a folder that I'll toss whatever songs I come across that would work for such a show. What do you think? Is this a worthy idea?

The Missing Poster

This image is making rounds on Twitter and having people arguing Eddie’s age again so I want to throw my head canon out
This is ignoring flight of Icarus because I haven’t read it.
T | wc 1,903 | tw: death/murder, abuse
Wayne had prayed he’d never have to make another missing poster again.
In 1984, Eddie went off on a bender. It was a series of unfortunate phone calls that fell like dominoes.
First, the school.
His grades were low. He’s failed too many classes. He wasn’t going to graduate.
Then, Eddie’s dad, Ricky.
He was in the Marion County jail. Waiting to be processed. He had two charges: manslaughter and second-degree murder. He had no bond. He was to be kept at Marion County until his court proceedings take place.
Then, the coroner’s office.
Ricky failed to mention to Wayne who was dead. Who he killed. If Wayne knew Ricky had strangled Elizabeth, he would’ve told Eddie not to answer anymore phone calls.
But the third call came, Eddie already on his breaking point. He picked it up, and was met with the terrible news, given to him by someone so mechanical with their words. As if they were telling him that there was a coupon for milk in the grocery’s ads.
His mom was dead.
The coroner’s office needed to know which funeral home to send the body to. Not her body. The body.
Eddie dropped the phone, taking off outside. Wayne was quick on his heels for someone who complained about how his knee ached.
“Eddie! Eddie!” Wayne called, following after him. “Eddie, boy! C’mon home.” Wayne reached out, gently touching Eddie’s arm to lead him back to the house. Eddie snatched his arm away, as if Wayne’s touch was hot like fire, turning around tears streaming down his face.
“She was supposed to be okay!” Eddie shouted. “She wasn’t supposed to be around him! She was supposed to get clean! She promised! She promised!”
“Eds —“ Wayne started, a soft sigh and he reached back out. Eddie took a step back, shaking his head.
“No — no, I —“ he shook his head again, running his fingers through his hair. “Fuck this. I gotta — I gotta go.”
“Go where?” Wayne asked, taking a step towards Eddie like a baby deer. Eddie shook his head, taking two steps back.
“I gotta get out of here —“
Gravel crunching under tires pulled both their attentions back to the trailer house. Wayne recognized the Chevy Blazer immediately. Chief Hopper has made stops to the Munson home a few times since Eddie moved in with Wayne in ‘79. Eddie always seemed to find trouble. Or trouble always seems to find the Munson’s.
“Eds, we should —“ Wayne turned to look back at Eddie, already taken off into the woods. Wayne sighed and approached Chief Hopper.
“Wayne,” Hopper said, taking off his hat and holding it to his chest. He nodded at where Eddie once stood. “I’m guessing Marion County called.”
“My boy answered the phone,” Wayne supplied. “So I’m not sure what was said, but the way he was talking ‘bout his momma, I can assume the earlier call from his daddy was related.”
Hopper nodded, glancing towards the forest where Eddie disappeared. “You know where he took off to?”
“Nope,” Wayne said. “He’s got friends in town, and a few spots near the lake ‘nd the quarry.”
“He take off like this before?”
Wayne let out a half laugh. “A few times. Usually back in the middle of the night or by mornin’. Never gone for a full day.”
Hopper let out a hum. “He ain’t back by sunset tomorrow, give me a call.”
Wayne gave a nod, looking out towards the forest. “He’ll be back by mornin’.”
Hopper nodded. “Sorry about Elizabeth. She was a kind soul.”
“Just kept findin’ that trouble named Ricky,” Wayne sighed. “Thanks, Jim.”
Hopper started back towards his car, stopping in his place. “Hey, uh, I wouldn’t … be surprised if they called your boy to testify.”
Wayne wrinkled his brow. “What do you mean? He was here.”
“Character witness,” Hopper supplied. “He — I remember those bruises and cuts he had when we dropped him off on your porch a few years back. The prosecutor might call ‘im up to recount Ricky’s abuse.”
Wayne let out a deep sigh. He remembered that night all too well. Eddie had always been tall for his age, even at 13. But scrawny teen looked small with his arms crossed over his chest, more purple bruising on his body than his pale skin, standing behind Jim Hopper. It didn’t take much for Wayne to connect the dots, and it didn’t take much convincing when he called Ricky a week later to let Eddie stay with him in Hawkins permanently. He watched that buzz cut kid grow into his larger than life personality, leaving his hard edges back in Indianapolis with his father. But now, Ricky came crashing back into Eddie’s life, knocking the walls of security down.
“Thanks Jim,” Wayne said. “We’ll keep that in mind.”
Hopper gave one more nod before climbing into the Blazer and driving off. Wayne sighed, walking back to the house and sitting on the couch outside. He pulled out his cigarette pack from his shirt pocket and lit a cigarette between his lips.
Wayne wasn’t sure how long he waited outside for Eddie. Longer than he should’ve. He finally moved inside when the sun started to blush the sky. He crashed on the couch, hardly sleeping as he waited for the sound of the trailer creaking with Eddie’s heavy footsteps.
But it never came.
The day came and went, and Eddie was no where to be found.
Wayne tried his friends, calling down the list of the guys who played Eddie’s dragons game with him. No one had seen him since yesterday. He tried the Library and the Hideout. No luck. Wayne went through Eddie’s little black book of phone numbers. Hell, he even tried a few places in Indy. The more numbers he called, the more he grew wary.
What felt like hours later, he called Hopper.
He told him to come down to the station, bring a recent photo. So Wayne grabbed the one off the fridge — the one he took at the beginning of the school year. It was way too hot for Eddie to be wearing his long sleeve under the t-shirt, but arguing with Eddie on what to wear was like arguing with a wall. The sun was in Eddie’s eyes. Eddie barely wanted to take the photo in the first place. Wayne made him. Said they would send the photo to his momma. To remember senior year.
Fucking hell.
When he got to the station, he was directed to one of the administrative ladies. She took the photo and took information about Eddie. His height. His weight. His age.
Shit.
He was turning 18 next week.
The woman finished making the flyer, using the Xerox in the back to add Eddie’s photo to it. She handed him a stack of copies and the photo back.
“What now?” Wayne asked.
“We wait,” she said. “He’s officially a missing person. Officers know to keep a look out. We’ll let other stations know as well.”
Wayne nodded, taking a step back. Her words echoed in his head. We wait.
He took the flyers and hung them around town. Taking them to every business, every office, posting them on telephone poles. A few passbyers took it out of politeness, barely looking at Eddie’s photo as they walked by. At least, the woman at Melvard’s was kind, looking at him with sympathy and promising him he would turn up. Her own boy turned up last year, even after he was pronounced dead. Maybe she had enough hope to bring Eddie back safe as well.
But days past and nobody heard from Eddie. Wayne grew more and more worried, feeling like his all efforts of searching were going to waste. Wayne found it harder and harder to sleep at night, worried about his boy.
It wasn’t until he got that faithful call from Hopper.
“They found him.”
Wayne can’t recall the details or where they found him or what drugs was in his system. All Wayne could remember was Eddie lying in that hospital bed, paler than the sheets looking at Wayne like Wayne was Ricky.
Wayne sat in the chair next to Eddie, slowly and gently placing his hand on top of Eddie’s, running his thumb against his skin. “What a way to spend your birthday, huh?”
Eddie let out a wet laugh, relaxing against Wayne’s touch. “Sorry, Wayne, didn’t mean t’scare ya.”
“Don’t do it again,” Wayne said, leaning up to press a kiss against Eddie’s hair. “Please.”
Wayne doesn’t blame Eddie for this time.
It’s that Munson trouble that found him. He knew Eddie didn’t kill that girl. It wasn’t his nature. He’s not like Ricky.
Eddie isn’t like his father.
It’s been almost a week since he heard from Eddie. A few days since the teens were around the trailer park asking about him. Nobody has heard from Eddie. He knows the police are looking for him, placing him at that girl’s murder.
But it wasn’t Eddie.
Wayne had just hung up that missing poster this morning at the gym, where the City had called for a shelter. He went to the library and Xeroxed a couple of copies of the missing poster he kept folded up in his wallet. There wasn’t enough resources or time to make another. A quick change to the missing date, thanks to the type writer at the front desk. Wayne folded up the original, placing it back in his wallet. It served as a reminder of to keep his boy close. To make sure he felt loved.
And someone took a damn marker to it, vandalizing his boy to hell. Wayne pulled down the destroyed flyer, trashing it. He replaced it with the new one, feeling his heart ache as he looked at young Eddie, beginning of his first senior year.
Now, he didn’t know where he was.
“Mr. Munson?”
Wayne turned around to see a boy with curly hair, the same boy who stopped by the trailer park with the other teens, now sporting crutches. Another boy, about Eddie’s age stood behind him, with a red ring around his neck. He stood strong, almost like a soldier, holding something gently in his hand, as if he was afraid he would crush it.
The younger boy leaned forward, the older boy nearly shot out his free hand, grabbing the other to stabilize him. The younger boy lowered his voice. “We know where Eddie is.”
The older boy extended his bandaged hand, opening it to reveal Eddie’s guitar pick necklace.
And that’s all it took for Wayne to follow them to the old Hawkins lab. Wayne nearly jumped out of his truck as he followed the boys into the lab, down the hall and into a makeshift hospital room.
There laid Eddie, like he did not even two years before. His hair matted and dirty, his face and arms bandaged like he went through hell and back. He looked up at Wayne, his eyes watered. “Wayne —“
Wayne leaned down and buried a kiss into Eddie’s hair. “You’re safe, son,” Wayne whispered. “You’re safe.”
“I didn’t — I didn’t mean t’scare ya,” Eddie said with a lopsided smile. Wayne let out a soft laugh, relieved his boy was alive.
“Don’t do it again,” Wayne whispered into his hair. “I mean it this time.”
