what is ur guys thoughts on issue 2 of robin & batman: jason todd

cause uhh...

idk if i hate or am apathetic towards this alfred portrayal ngl. mainly just bc i swear there were classist elements in his dynamic with 70s-80s jason but also they were never this bad.

the wraith pisses me off. jason doesnt need to be fed ideals or anything like he's gone through enough shit as a child that his beliefs are foundational to his being. some of the stuff the wraith says is like bar for bar (not really but also kinda) what jason as red hood says. also some of the lines feel so on the nose?? like "we're soldiers. this is a war" right. right. so would this have anything at all to do with the "a good soldier" thing or no. "i used to look up to you" man who are you. this shit has no impact on me bc i do not know who this person is.

dont make this into a "jason picks between which path he wants to follow; batman, wraith, or nightwing" thing. idk like let red hood be formed from jason's own ideology bc that shit hits harder.

who even is this guy. if hes just a random robber idk if jason would fw wraith after he shot a guy that for all we know, hasnt done shit yet. "what am i?" "a weapon" nnnnnnh. ok so i really didnt like that.

discowing made an appearance and we all cheered.

there are parallels between jason and damian but this is doing too much. wait there lowkey better be some time travel shit or whatever going on bc thats the only wraith i will minimally accept. and also the only explanation for jason having like prophetic dreams or smth in issue 1.

idk how i feel abt violent robin jason but ultimately i think it makes sense if hes like a little too violent ykwim. like he shouldnt be killing anyone yet but he can break like 8 bones. as a treat. jokes aside yall want me to think anger is so bad like no jason is angry and hes (imo) not wrong for it. i think a major part of being robin is pushing against batman, like its a whole balancing act kind of thing. sure they're partners but at the end of the day, robin is a kid with vastly different life experiences, which makes for a fundamental difference in ideals. these can be major differences or smaller but always always, robin is not gonna gaf what batman says, robin does what robin does. but also i do think jason's anger should be in response to something, like this portrayal does feel like he gets easily ragebaited or smth. which could be fine could be okay, but they arent really doing anything new with it. "this jason is three dimensional" is he really. or is he just three adjacent diamonds giving off the illusion of a cube bc im not seeing shit rn. 80s jason and jason - bruce -bday gift - watch after giving me more depth of character.

an "i can fix him" mentality in this economy from all parties is actually killing me.

wraith design aint even that cool i thought it was a ghostmaker redesign for like 5 panels and was reading that shit like it was him until batman said "i dont know who he is."

best believe im gonna keep reading in hopes that the final issue does the impossible and pulls it all together.

Okay theory time because I'm delusional

I believe that Wraith from the new Jaybin comics is Jason from the future/alternative universe (or at least one of the Robins, I'm open to suggestions but Jason makes most sense to me) if this was already confirmed either to be true or false, please ignore me🥀

Firstly, we have Jason saying in his narration about being a mascot (1) which Wraith later repeats (2). It would make sense that he repeats what he used to think about as a kid. It's Jason's first year as Robin and he clearly can't find his place in this dynamic with Bruce. He's just lost because he's what, 13 here? So he doesn't know if he's supposed to be a son, because the parent-son relationship he already had was completely different with an addict mother (obviously the syringe in 1) and imprisoned/dead father (from issue #1). And so if Jason has to wonder and ponder who he is to Bruce then it's clearly a problem with communication between them. Because Jason is a kid who doesn't know if he's supposed to be a son to a billionaire, a mascot to Batman or a soldier to a vigilante. Alfred in this situation is completely useless and I'm not even sorry. He's awful in this run and there's no justification for any of his words about Jason. I would even go as far as to say that Alfred just makes the situation worse because he's clearly negatively biased when it comes to Jason and I believe that it only escalates Jason's hesitance about his role in this new life.

Then we have Wraith that we don't know anything about except that he's an adult dude who apparently doesn't mind killing and who believes in permanent solutions (4). It sounds awfully familiar if you ask me. Anyway, he mentions being a soldier and we all remember the 'good soldier' case. He also mentions it twice, to Robin (2) and to Batman (3). Hell of a coincidence for a completely random new villain with no personal connection to Batman. Not to mention the fact that he says 'we' instead of 'I'. He clearly takes all of this personally (3-5).

Would he really say that if it wasn't personal to him?

And lastly, Wraith making an offer to Jason. If he is an older version of him, it would make sense that he wants to ensure that his younger self becomes self sufficient and capable of defending himself in any way possible, including killing in self defense. He calls Robin a weapon (6) because this is what he believes he is when he grows up. In issue #1 Jason said the same thing. 'I'm a weapon.' He offers to help Jason because he needs to make sure Jason won't die. Because after all, Jaybin is just a kid who needs guidance. If he can make him gullibly follow his ideas instead of Batman's, he has a better chance of ensuring his future survival. Because he understands what needs to be done and he knows that neither Bruce nor Alfred gets it.

On a random side note, Wraith's mask resembles a skull. Like a dead man's skull, a dead Robin's.

To conclude this delusional theory, I fully believe that Jason and Wraith are just the same person, only on a different stage of life. Please don't bully me if I'm wrong😔🥀
