This happened on Sunday afternoon on the way to a gig at @greenoasisnyc in the East Village with @ericpaulinjazz. It was quite the schlep: the usual walk to 177th, then A to L to M14A. (The M14D would’ve put me closer, but the 14A was there and the driver was letting me on, which is never a guarantee.) I took the bus to 10th St and Ave A and then made the walk over to Ave C. The left wheel of the cart had been wobbling from the start, but as I went on, the cart became progressively harder and harder to push. It was hot outside and I had to put my whole body into every step. A few days later and it still feels like I went to a glutebusters class. I made the left onto 8th street, exhausted and relieved that I was in the final stretch. But then, with the garden in sight, the cart would not go any further. The wheel had finally given out. Luckily, I got to within 50 yards of the gate before it finally happened. So I got a year out of these wheels, which endured hundreds of stairs and a few jumps off buses. Fortunately, I had ordered a replacement cart months ago, which had just been waiting in my room, still in the shipping box. So I assembled it that night and was still able to partake in a crazy Memorial Day rooftop jam. (Assembling the new cart had actually been on my to-do list for a couple weeks, out of my worry that I would get stuck somewhere with my vibes when the wheel busted.
