Sometimes, during practice, his eyes linger a little too long on the other court, where the doubles are playing. Something about her pulls him. Makes him want to look at her. There was much unsaid in these glances exchanged in silence – much that would never be said, too. But he makes a point of letting her know he is watching.

Edward does not let it hinder his focus, of course. Competitive as only a Morrison can be, nothing can ever distract him from the one and only true goal – victory. But he catches himself almost missing a ball or two every now and then, whenever their gazes meet.

When the coaches blow their whistles and the crowd starts to disperse, Edward goes in the opposite direction, to the court where Sassa is, her teammate and the other duo already on their way out. With a little nod, he indicates that he is coming to her, that she should stay behind. “It’s been a while since we last played.” He says as he reaches her, the other players already out of earshot. He throws a ball in the air and catches it before he hits the ground. Although both have their rackets, Edward’s words sound less objective in nature. A match doesn’t sound too bad, though, he will admit.

Bibi’s heart almost jumps out of his chest when the sharp complaint reaches his ears. He tries to skid out of the way but overcompensates for the sudden change in momentum and ends up falling onto his hand. Bibiano hisses in pain, realizing he skinned his palms and knees in his attempt to soften his fall. He hears his SAE brothers ask if he’s okay so he waves them off with a single smarting hand.

Twisting around to sit heavily on the floor, his gaze is pulled to the person he had nearly collided into. He stares up at Astrid Fiske in surprise, the adrenaline slowly waning out of his system. “Oh shit, Sassa, my bad! I was distracted and I didn’t see you, I’m so sorry,” Bibi utters in a flurry, registering how bad things could have turned out had they actually collided into each to each other.

“It’s a good thing you managed to get out of the say,” he tried to smile, but his mind was still caught up with the tone of her voice from moments ago. It had caught him so off guard. While it wasn’t like he hadn’t noticed that they had grown more and more apart over the years, he didn’t expect the vitriol.

“Is everything okay, Sass?” He asked from where he sat on the floor.

Sassa had no interest in trying to dunk people in the dunk tank at the carnival, glancing towards the line waiting in front of it with a roll of her eyes as she continued past the horde of frat boys making a scene. She may have been in a sorority, but she hardly found any of them to be worth her time. Even if they deserved to be taken down a few pegs, which she quickly realized the person exiting the tank was someone who certainly did. 

But she’d play the long game, not be fooled into believing that knocking them into some icey water was any sort of real revenge. 

She kept walking by, taking a large loop around to get to the booth she had planned on visiting, just passing the dunk tank as Bibi had apparently exited, the tall male nearly knocking her over in the process. Her upper lip curled up, the invisible feeling far too familiar, especially in the presence of someone like him. “Watch out,” she said in a low voice, daintily stepping out of his path so she wouldn’t get taken down.

And legend has it that Pope Celestine V was crowned here in 1294.⁣ ⁣ In addition, the Basilica is located at the point of arrival and departure of the Great Trail between L’Aquila and Foggia, which over the centuries has been traversed by thousands of flocks of sheep during the period of transhumance.⁣ ⁣ Inside the Basilica there are frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries that have been carefully restored (I'll put them up on a future post!). And at the side of the altar there is a precious richly decorated marble temple which preserves the remains of Pope Celestine V. The remains of the pope were stolen repeatedly in 1528, in 1799 and most recently in 1998 before the tomb was secured.⁣ ⁣ The floor of the Basilica’s white and pink  geometric shapes enchant visitors, outlining the majesty of this building of worship. More than 3.5 million unemployed apply for R350 Sassa grant

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has acquired extra than 3.5 million functions for the particular Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant since going live on Monday.

Depois do herdeiro nascer prematuro, a atriz enfim pôde levá-lo para casa neste domingo (19). Em seu perfil oficial no Instagram, ela apareceu ao lado do marido, Ramón Velázquez, e fez um desabafo sobre os dias exaustivos que passou vendo o filho naquela situação.

Ubuntu: “I am because we are”. An ideology that paints Southern Africa as a picture of unity, peace, and selflessness. A concept that recognizes our unconscious binding to each other, and the revelation that every success is through the sharing of ourselves within ourselves. It is an affirmation that being human is not an isolated concept, rather, it is generosity as a domino effect.

However, through the lens of a citizen the busy roads have traffic lights which are often affected by load shedding and inundated with countless beggars which threaten and curse when money isn’t given to them, open spaces which are now being invaded and decreasing property value which is accompanied by high petty and organized crime rates. These challenges which lie within the beauty of the architecture, nature and the history of our country, are indicative of a glaring reality that we are in a recession, and our current economic growth is a mere 0.7%.

This economy which is crippled by corruption and unemployment (Muchara, 2019) engenders the inhumane conditions in which people are born into, grow up, work and age in (Pinkney-Atkinson, 2018). The catastrophe of unemployment hits 37% of the South African population, making it the sixth highest unemployment rate in the world. This number is expected to increase with the retrenchment threats from Eskom, the mines, SABC, Standard Bank and potentially SAA and Edcon. Further, a horrifying 55% of the population live in abject poverty, while 6 million children live below the poverty line (Vavi, 2019).

The approximately 17 million SASSA grants which are issued monthly (Kwach, 2019) to the underprivileged are, to a large extent, the only source of income for families. Consequently, the poor living conditions and abundance of starch-based diets result in malnutrition, a condition that negatively affects individuals both physically and mentally. Developmental delay, muscle weakness, learning difficulties, decreased reaction time and reduced immune system are some of the effects of an unbalanced diet (Weiss, 2016). These effects then result in limited working opportunities in the future (Nordqvist, 2017).

It is no fault of the parents whose children suffer because of our broken system, but naturally they carry the burden of guilt. The naivety and ignorance are far too often the reason people receive help too late, when the progression is far along and the chances of attaining normalcy is decreased.

Often I think ‘What if she came in sooner?’, ‘What if we had known just a little earlier’, ‘what if … ?’ and then I tell myself ‘at least he’s here now, we can help now’  and then focus on the present and future. But, what if it doesn’t have to be that way? What if we can do something from within, that will not only reduce the guilt but make therapy much more effective? What if we can change this cycle of ignorance, and eternal guilt?

Looking through the lens of an occupational therapy student whose focus is on assisting people throughout their lifespan to participate in valued occupations to promote health and prevent, or live with the injury, illness or disability; we can break the cycle – financial constraints need not be an isolated reason for poor health and uninformed choices. Using creative thinking, recycling, education and combined efforts, money management and sanitation skills can be taught, community support groups can be formed and tasked with projects, sustainable gardens can be started, budget-friendly recipes can be invented, and the communities may begin to flourish. Education, promotion and prevention can be from within, direct and relatable. The health of the community, through the radical change in the diet and living conditions, will improve.

These efforts will not necessarily upturn the economy or eradicate any past challenges, but cross-community communication will increase, individual participation will rise, and together human, financial, natural and personal resources will be shared. This sharing will build a strong sense of community, rooted in compassion, togetherness, and resilience.

Afterall, we are the people of Ubuntu. The question is, are we patriotic?

Atriz da Globo, Sabrina Petraglia revela momento difícil com o filho em UTI e desabafa: “Dias exaustivos”

A atriz da Globo Sabrina Petraglia deixou a UTI de hospital em São Paulo após passar momento difícil com o filho, que nasceu prematuro e ficou 19 dias internado.

Depois do herdeiro nascer prematuro, a atriz enfim pôde levá-lo para casa neste domingo (19). Em seu perfil oficial no Instagram, ela apareceu ao lado do marido, Ramón Velázquez, e fez um desabafo sobre os dias exaustivos que passou vendo o filho naquela situação.

“Hoje, 19/05/2019, renascemos. Depois de 19 dias exaustivos de UTI Neonatal, recebemos alta e estamos finalmente indo pra casa. Não foi nada fácil, mas passamos por isso juntos, nós 3, nesse teste de fé, perseverança e amor. Vamos aproveitar o nosso gorducho nesse finzinho de domingo, tomar fôlego, e sentir um primeiro gostinho de como será a vida a partir de agora. Obrigada por cada oração e palavra de carinho que recebemos todos esses dias”, escreveu Sabrina Petraglia.

Na publicação, a atriz da Globo recebeu o apoio de vários amigos famosos. “Que felicidade! Bem-vindo Gael!!!! Você tem uma família linda e uma super mãezona, que é um ser humano de um coração gigante e de muita luz! Parabéns papais!”, escreveu Vitoria Strada.

ATRIZ PRESERVOU NASCIMENTO DO FILHO

Gael nasceu dia 01º de maio, com oito meses de gestação, no Hospital São Luiz, na zona sul de São Paulo. Sabrina Petraglia, no entanto, anunciou o acontecimento somente no dia 09 de maio, em meio ao momento de dificuldade com o filho internado na UTI após o parto prematuro.

An unexpected but strangely welcome gravity clouded their conversation as Sassa mentioned her own distrust for Lincoln. Initially, Edward had brought up emo-grunge-Y2k-Dracula as a joke, kind of as a flirting mechanism to imply to Sassa that she had been in his mind and that he was starting to feel almost a bit jealous – even if he considered himself immune to jealousy – that they were spending too little time together. He knew Sassa enjoyed being reminded that he paid attention to her... But the sudden emotional charge in her voice – the cynicism and the disdain – made him realize there was a lot that he did not know about their relationship.  

So, when he went to answer her question, he just offered her a kind of unbothered shrug that silently said, ‘Beats me…’ because he honestly didn’t know why she might trust Lincoln Crawford – or why anyone would. To him, Lincoln Crawford was about as trustworthy as a piece of cheese on a mousetrap – with his impossibly convenient presence and the endless insincere flatteries. So Sassa, being even better than he was at spotting liars and narcissists, logically would have no reason to trust him either. But the weight of her words, the tenacity in her voice, made him wonder if, maybe, she had made the mistake of believing them in the past and was left high and dry…

The sun began to set. Light orange skies dyed a deep purple pink. Shadows growing on the sides of their faces like poison ivy. And under the dim light, her siren’s song lured him in. You do know me better than they do. She serenaded him, and he compliantly danced to it.

But then came a bucket of cold water – the revelation that made him halt abruptly in stark disappointment. Greer was being blackmailed. Greer? Blackmailed? An absurd suggestion, but not an impossible one. She, who generally had the upper hand on everything, who generally had leverage on everyone, suddenly forced to taste her own medicine? If Edward already had his reservations about Lincoln, Sassa had given him all the more reason not to like them… “Please,” He scoffed, “I wouldn’t trust anything he had to say about you…” But the little skeptical devil on his left shoulder couldn’t help but question her reasons for telling him about Lincoln and Greer’s complicated relationship at that exact moment and for asking, so vehemently, that he didn’t trust them. “But… What do you mean they were blackmailing my sister?”

"Why would I?" Sassa said in a low voice, eyes not having moved from Edward's face the entire time he bounced the ball, serving it across the court, leaving her hanging while her plea had sat between them, heavy in the thick air of contemplation. Her eyebrows raised up as she stared at him, the corners of her mouth twitching up ever so slightly. Why would she trust Link enough to be friends with him? Why would she trust anyone who had been close, who potentially still was close with Greer?

Edward Morrison included.

Sassa's expression immediately shifted, the smile that had been close to playing on her lips falling immediately into a pout, eyebrows drawing ever so closely together. She wasn't a saint. She knew that. Link definitely knew that. That's what she was scared of - she had always wanted Eddie to think of her more highly than that, and him being aware of her negatives - oh, Sassa couldn't help but fixate on which negatives he was referring to, exactly. What he had put together on his own, what had potentially been said to him - which, yes, Link was a concern, but her mind always went back to Greer. Understandably, considering the golden girl's sway on her brother, the ability she had already had to get in between them.

"You do know me better than they do. Of course you do," she murmured, finally breaking the piercing eye contact she had been holding, looking away with a soft sigh - put on, of course. Sassa wasn't entirely sure that was true, not really. But Edward knew the her she wanted to be, knew the her she wanted him to. And that's what was important. The side of her Link knew was one she'd never admit to to anyone else. "He was probably blackmailing your sister, Edward," Sassa said, her tone returning to pleading as she looked back up towards Eddie, eyes wide with her attempt to get him to believe her, reaching out and gently laying a hand on his forearm. "Who knows what he would say in an attempt to get you on his side now that she's....gone," she said, letting out another sigh. A weaving of truth and lies, Sassa's specialty, as she tried her best to make him doubt anything that came from Link's mouth.

Her initial rebuttal caught him off guard, creased eyebrows and a confused stare denouncing his evident surprise. Had he misread Sassa and Crawford’s relationship all along? Were they nothing but acquaintances that he eventually saw exchanging a few polite words? Or maybe worse, were they foes? Like he considered Lincoln to be? And then she hit him with the her strange request… Whatever he said to you about me… I hope you wouldn’t believe it. His countenance changed. The once perplexed stare was replaced by a curious, contemplating gaze, eyes narrowing inquisitively, lips turning upward in a questioning smirk. Edward had his own reasons not to trust Lincoln Crawford, but why would she think they would say anything to him about her?

He said nothing for a moment. Took the ball in his hand, threw it on the ground with some force, and waited for it to bounce back. When it did, it rose just a few inches over the top of his head, tall enough for him to shoot it to the other side of the court with a perfect overhead serve. As the ball bounced away, he turned back to her and said finally, “Now, why would I trust Lincoln Crawford out of all people?” His voice sounded almost snarky at the mention of their name. He wanted her to know he trusted her. Well, more than he did Lincoln anyway. And even though his feelings towards Ogden's resident Jason Dean had been complicated lately, he felt she might like to know he would favor the devil he knew over the devil he didn’t any day...

“I mean, I know you're not a saint." Regardless of how he felt about her, with all his unconfessed affection, and repressed desire, he still held a bit of a grudge towards her over his falling out with his best friend. He knew their dramatic break-up wasn’t entirely her fault, but she had been a pivotal factor. And for that, he still felt that, despite his genuine liking of her, he couldn’t bring himself to trust her. His words didn’t come from a hurtful place, though. They were more like a tease. They had long talked it over and sorted it out. On their end, at least. With Roman, on the other hand, things were much more complicated. “But… I like to think I know you better than Crawford does…” Maybe he didn’t, but he sure liked to believe. “So even if he had said anything to me, which he didn’t, I wouldn’t have believed a word of it…” But curiosity gnawed at him, so he couldn't resist asking, “Tell me, though… What could he possibly say that has got you worried about me trusting him?”

Sassa let a small flicker of a smile play across her lips, her arms staying crossed her chest as she watched Edward carefully. It worked - it would always work when it came to him. But she couldn't admit that so quickly, so easily - she wanted him to work for it. To work for her. "I haven't decided yet," Sassa answered, an innocent expression on her face as she let him approach a bit more, her own racquet tucked up underneath her arm as she swayed her weight back and forth, pretending to deliberate still.

Her eyes stayed on his face as his eyes traced over her features, teeth catching her lower lip, tugging on it as she debated what to propose - she had several ideas, covering a whole range of propositions for Edward. But she didn't get to deliver any of them, the mention of Link like a bucket of ice water, Sassa fighting back the scowl that threatened to darken her expression. "Link Crawford and I aren't friends," she said softly, a flutter of her lashes accompanying the words, hiding the flash of anger she felt that Link had to get in the middle of this. Link may have been on her mind when Eddie had approached, but becoming the topic at hand certainly took away from the validation of him having approached her in the first place.

With a tilt of her head, Sassa's gaze swept downwards, frowning for a moment before she looked back up at Edward, a hint of a hurt on her features. "Whatever he said to you about me...I hope you wouldn't believe it," she said softly. She knew Link was prone to lying about her - as proven with the whole Milo and G situation - but she also knew, if their past was any indication....Eddie would listen to someone else over her. Had once upon a time listened to Greer, over her. His sister may be a bit different from Link, but...still. The concern remained.
