Hey y'all, I should've posted this before but if you're interested, the Rosenbach Museum and Library is doing Sherlock Mondays from today until the end of April, every Monday at 7pm EST, with a story per episode (going until The Empty House) except for novellas, which get two weeks. You can register for it at the previous link to receive all the information in emails. They describe it as a "verbal annotation" with a special Sherlockian guest each week, and the emails also include a cocktail recipe to go with each story. It streams on YouTube and will also be available a few days later as a podcast on all major podcast places. If you're interested I encourage y'all to check it out! It's totally free, but there will be extra paid episodes available afterwards.

What's really funny about the below post regarding Leslie Klinger's "firm belief" that Holmes and Watson's relationship was "free from homoerotic content" is that. While in the course of annotating and collating scholarship about Sign of Four and Valley of Fear he never once alluded to it ever occurring to anyone that Holmes and Watson could have something queer going on. He did, however, report the following theories:
That Mary came to Baker Street with the intent to try and marry Holmes, then shifted to Watson upon discovering him to be a more likely prospect
That in the course of their marriage Mary was jealously convinced she was second in Watson's heart to the true great love of his life ... Helen Stoner from Speckled Band
That Holmes also fell in love with Mary, and was heartbroken that Watson beat him to the proposal
And, my personal favourite: That Watson had an on-again-off-again affair with Irene Adler, culminating in marriage when the both of them left their spouses for one another.
#i'm pretty sure there were others from Vall that i've forgotten#and presumably more in the many other stories i haven't read his annotations for#in fairness to klinger#he's just reporting these theories#not necessarily agreeing with them#but he did find them worth mentioning#unlike other romantic theories ... for some reason ...#i am glad he reported them though#they are very funny#acd canon#sherlock holmes#john watson#acd holmes

Some of my sillier SH annotations.
#Ignore any spelling mistakes and the fact that my Is look like Zs when I’m not careful.#Looking back like half of my annotations are “yay” or “uhoh” which says something about my vernacular that I’m not sure I’m ready to accept#acd holmes#sherlock holmes

Do you know. DO YOU KNOW. I read the Sherlock Holmes books in Romanian, right, cuz my mom got them for me and I wanna use them. So anyway I was very excited to finally reach The Dying Detective. Cause I'm on Tumblr a lot, I knew what happens. And I knew about "Quick, man, if you love me". So I'm approaching that part in the book. Omg yayy here we go. I turn the page.
"Quick, man, if you care about me!"
Ehem.
What.
My dude that does NOT convey the same thing and you KNOW it.
"Love" is a pretty easy word to translate, I mean you learn it pretty early on. Earlier than "coward" and certainly earlier than "spineless", which is what you are.
What, did you think it was weird? Were you so afraid that it would sound gay that you chose to translate incorrectly???
Literally the first fucking thing they teach you in a translation class is DON'T BE AFRAID TO TRANSLATE!! LIKE ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?? And it wasn't.. There were no rude words involved cuz that's usually what this is referring to but No it was just SOMEONE SAYING "IF YOU LOVE ME".TO HIS FRIEND OF MANY YEARS!
Look at me. Someone who doesn't know English reading your translation will never know that he said "if you love me". Does that seem fair? It was your job to convey the same message, but in another language. And you. Didn't.
"Dacă ții la mine"
Gabriel when I fucking catch you
#for the curious “If you love me” = “Dacă mă iubești”#and yeah “dacă ții la mine” = “if you care about me”#I'm so angry rn#..I actually read this story months ago but i only wrote my thoughts on the book#( like annotations )#but another post reminded me of this#and uh#yeah#sherlock holmes#acd canon#the dying detective#romanian#translation

A fun thing about reorganizing my bookshelves is that I've been reminded of various books that I own that either I never got around to reading, or that I haven't read in a long time. (eg, 15 years ago, I collected copies of all of Margery Allingham's Campion novels and only read about half of them, out of order - now I'm inspired to read the whole series!)
And a thing about reorganizing my bookshelves that I have indescribable feelings about is realizing that I own seven separate copies of Dracula.
#one is my original paperback from childhood#two i bought because of illustrations#one is an annotated version (leslie s klinger)#one is a comic book adapation#one is a portuguese translation (because why not practice a new language with a book you already know well?)#and the last is an ebook copy#because you never know when you're going to need to read dracula and only have your phone with you#this tally is leaving out audiobooks radio dramas and films#(i also have three different copies of the complete sherlock holmes canon#and two copies of phantom of the opera#and i am a nonsense)

I think it's pretty safe to say that one of Holmes's special intrests is the mediæval era. Not only did he study the music, in the Sign of Four during his dinner time infodump, he also talks about 'miracle-plays and mediæval pottery'. I love my autistic guy.

This is from Leslie Klinger's The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes. Bear in mind, aside from this, I greatly admire Klinger and his work. HOWEVER, I don't understand how a prominent Sherlockian scholar could even think about writing down one of the most slanderous and ill-informed sentences I've ever read. Thus, let me pull some quotes from "The Empty House" and defend Sherlock Holmes along with his and Watson's friendship.
When Holmes reveals himself to Watson in Watson's study:
"When I turned again Sherlock Holmes was standing smiling at me across my study table. I rose to my feet, stared at him for some seconds in utter amazement, and it appears I must have fainted....When it cleared I found my collar-ends undone and the tingling after-taste of brandy on my lips. Holmes was bending over my chair, his flask in hand. "My dear Watson," said the well-remembered voice, "I owe you a thousand apologies. I had no idea that you would be so affected."
"Can it indeed be that you're alive? Is it possible that you succeeded in climbing out of that awful abyss?" [Watson] "Wait a moment!" said [Holmes]. "Are you sure that you are really fit to discuss things? I have given you a serious shock by my unnecessarily dramatic appearance."
Holmes discussing his financial logistics with Mycroft during the hiatus:
"I had only one confidant--my brother Mycroft. I owe you many apologies, my dear Watson, but it was all-important that it should be thought I was dead, and it is quite certain that you would not have written so convincing an account of my unhappy end had you not yourself thought that it was true. Several times during the last three years I have taken up my pen to write to you, but always I feared lest your affectionate regard for me should tempt you to some indiscretion which would betray my secret."
When Holmes returns to 221b Baker St for the first time (sans Watson):
"So it was, my dear Watson, that at two o'clock to-day I found myself in my old arm-chair in my own old room, and only wishing that I could have seen my old friend Watson in the other chair which he has so often adorned."
It is widely thought this next quote is said in regards to the death of Mary Morstan Watson, but it is still up for debate among Sherlockians/Holmesians:
"In some manner he had learned of my own sad bereavement, and his sympathy was shown in manner rather than in his words. 'Work is the best antidote to sorrow, my dear Watson,' said he, 'and I have a piece of work for us tonight.'"
Now to cap off the night:
"And now, Watson, if you can endure the draught from a broken window, I think half an hour in my study over a cigar may afford you some profitable amusement."
Yes, Sherlock Holmes can be a calculating, logical "machine" (other's words not mine), but the canon shows time and time again how devoted Holmes and Watson are to each other. Holmes highly values and respects Watson as a person and as a friend. It genuinely upsets me at the thought of someone dismissing that and giving such a mis-guided view of how Holmes behaves to Watson when he returns. Holmes is fully conscious of how deeply affected Watson was by his "death" and does not try to diminish that pain in any way. Holmes even tells Watson how much he missed him and just wanted to be back home at Baker St with him. Their friendship is the guiding light through these stories, which if absent, would not have gathered the following and community that has existed for the last 100+ years.

Details about Aziraphale's name are in the second note if you go to the L-space annotations for the book. - [p. vii] "[...] the angel, whose name was Aziraphale."
On the subject of the correct pronunciation of the name, Terry says:
"It should be Azz-ear-raf-AE-el, but we got into the habit of pronouncing it Azz-ear-raf-ail, so I guess that's the right way now."
And about the name's origin:
"It was made up but... er... from real ingredients. [The name] Aziraphale could be shoved in a list of 'real' angels and would fit right in..."
For instance, Islam recognizes the Archangels Jibril, Mikhail, Azrael (see also the annotation for p. 9 of Reaper Man ), and Israfel (the subject of Edgar Allan Poe's well-known poem of the same name), whereas from Christianity we get such names as Raphael, Gabriel, Michael, and Uriel.
neil, is there any particular reason why most angels' names end with -ael or -iel? with the exceptions of metatron, sandalphon, and aziraphale of course.
Angelic names tend to discuss the relationship of the angel to god, or be a description of an aspect of god. The "El" at the end of angelic names means "God" (or more precisely "god" because it can refer to lots of different gods).
Iirc Michael means "who is like God?", Gabriel means "my strength comes from God", Uriel means "light of God", Saraqael means "beloved by God" and Muriel means "smells like God".
#L space is an old work of love for PTerry's writing#I remember it from when I started using the web - maybe in the 90s? definitely the 00s#but I do love annotated texts#get the annotated dracula and sherlock holmes#they are excellent#esp for all the stuff you might miss because - hey turns out you have different cultural references to the author(s)
