if y’all don’t know. Rock of Ages has a junior edition. That’s right, an originally Rated R musical because of its illicit sexual nature, questionable amount of drinking, and strong coarse language has a Junior version.
if that wasn’t bad enough, I got to witness this first hand. Because my school preformed it. And as someone who was apart of tech crew, I. Saw. Everything. That. They. Changed.
the worst part is that our drama and choir teacher thought we wouldn’t look at the original musical. Plus it’s pretty obvious that the Dupree Room was VERY CLEARLY a strip club.
so here are some things that they changed from this lovely musical:
They changed the name of the Bourbon Room to “The Dupree Room” after Dennis’ last name. Because an alcoholic reference is a no no
I genuinely thought that Hilda was a real person in the musical. She’s not. She’s just Hertz, she’s just Hertz but a female-
Stacee Jaxx loses his hair and flees to Uruguay because he’s an old man apparently
LONNY AND DENNIS??? NON EXISTENT. We barely even get to see their relationship as owners of the club. Also Can’t fight this feeling is peak and should have been in the real musical
we never got to know that Arsenal absolutely hated Stacee
Stacee owes Dennis for a trip to Tijuana to visit ‘Dr. Hairplugs’ instead of the llama and cool whip incident in the hotel room. (alright that’s probably for the best that they changed that-)
I don’t know what I’m saying anymore
The mayor is still an incompetent little bitch who gets bribed by money
Sherrie rejects Stacee hard when he makes a move on her.
Ja’Keith is not a scammy person, he’s just a rock hater
Drew almost became apart of a boyband.
Justice is just an old lady who houses homeless people in her apartment. we know absolutely nothing else about her. Only that she’s called the Den Mother of the Sunset Strip, and stole Sherrie off of the street.
Drew’s from Detroit (MICHIGAN!)
literally at the end, the finale song is dont stop believing, and at the “He’s just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit.” It’s in the script that they have to say Michigan. Which is pointless, we know where Detroit is.
our sets were peak though even though most of our set crew dropped out lol
I rest my case. Thank you.
P.S.: This has been in my drafts for about a month now. I think I started writing this around the beginning of May-just when we premiered the show. I think I just forgot about it, but I wanted to share this with y’all!!
#rock of ages#Mel’s rants#Junior musicals#They’re insane sometimes#But I mean they had to change things??#Ack

Say Anything Interview: Intentional Is My Default

BY JORDAN MAINZER
I'm waiting back stage at Riot Fest for Say Anything's Max Bemis to finish a photoshoot, one that sees him lie in the grass in various positions that make it look like he's stretching after a tough workout. Despite the fact that he hasn't yet gotten his real workout in yet--his newly reformed band would go on stage in a few hours--and that this photoshoot is full of capital-p Poses, I'm taken by how at ease Bemis seems with everything. When we speak, he reveals to me that, yes, while he did in fact feel awkward during the photoshoot--most of us do--he's learning to lean into his feelings much more naturally.
Five years ago, the legendary emo band disbanded, with their 2019 album Oliver Appropriate billed as their final LP for the moment. A purported sequel to their beloved sophomore record ...Is A Real Boy, the album was publicized in conjunction with a nine-page letter from Bemis, in which came out as bisexual and admitted to struggles with drug use. (The frontman has long been open about his diagnosed bipolar disorder, previous self-medication through drugs, and manic episodes.) During the pandemic, Bemis stayed busy, performing livestreams of older material, but there was always lingering doubt the band's hiatus would become permanent.
It wasn't until late last year that Bemis dropped that the band would be reuniting for festivals in 2023. In typical nonchalant fashion, he shared that the reunion would include past members drummer Coby Linder and bassist Alex Kent by replying to someone's comment on a Facebook post. In April, the band released their first new material since Oliver Appropriate, the maximally stream-of-consciousness rant "Psyche!". The song sees Bemis laying out those same struggles for everyone to bear witness to, blaming himself for his personal, marital, and familial problems atop a bevy of references to the band's older material, Titanic, and Riot Fest itself. "By Riot Fest '24, I'll be coughing up corks if you supply the Malörk," he sings, a line that's instantly iconic and bound to be infamous for its satiric misspelling of Chicago's shot of choice. In August, the band followed it up with "Are You (In) There?", which also establishes itself within our emo universe, with mentions of Sunny Day Real Estate and mewithoutYou, but a more personal ode to Bemis' wife and the love they have for each other despite his past actions and shortcomings. And just this morning, Say Anything annouced ...Is Committed (Dine Alone), their new record, along with a single entitled "Carrie & Lowell & Cody (Pendent)", Bemis placing his "mommy issues" in conversation with those of indie folk luminary Sufjan Stevens. The song is musically heavier and more complex and full-throated, while also containing gorgeous choral harmonies from Bemis' wife, Sherri Dupree-Bemis.
At one point, the future of the band was a mystery to everyone, Bemis included. But with some newfound perspectives, the musical and personal influence of new band member Brian Warren of Weatherbox, and therapy, it seemed from just the short conversation I had with Bemis and Kent that they're in a good place, ready to embrace their new chapter. Read my interview below, conducted last month before I knew about their new album, edited for length and clarity. Catch the band three nights next week at The Regent Theater in LA and at When We Were Young in Las Vegas next weekend.

Since I Left You: How does it feel to be back?
Max Bemis: It feels great. I don't think I would have decided to write the songs again if I didn't aspire to how this feels now, which is very different than our experience as little kids being in a punk band, which was very intense and an experience I wouldn't trade for anything. But this is comfortable, and it feels like having the best job ever, in the words of Piebald. It could have been a stress fest, anxious, or bad, but the only reason I wanted to write again was to reach for this thing that we never got to settle into, being dads approaching 40. The bands we looked up to were doing it at that age and still making inventive music but still seeming to chill and not base their entire personas and aspirations around being in a band. I think I appreciate it more now that I'm not trying to be "a guy in a band" as hard as I was.
Alex Kent: Something we've been talking about since getting back up and running was the transition from utilizing it as an escape versus a form of healing. Because we've been through so much traumatic shit in our lives, most of the time Max and I talk, we talk about therapy. It's fucking weird going from 18 years old on a tour bus to having that self-awareness and reflection.
MB: I didn't need it like that for many years because our entire life cycle was keyed in to being on tour. I wasn't living a normal person life. I'm not saying I ever have really or ever will--I wrote comic books for five years. That's still weird. We're still weirdo guys. Having a family, coming out of that kind of circus, I feel more like my 14-year-old self who needed this music for that reason.
SILY: The new songs have a self-aware quality.
MB: More than ever.
SILY: How do you include the self-awareness in a set at a festival or concert, where you're literally referring to other songs you're playing in the setlist?
MB: We refer to Riot Fest itself!
SILY: And Malörk [sic]
MB: And Malörk. It's incredibly self-referential and ironic, but because the band started that way, it's come full circle and is no longer ironic at the same time. There's still a lot of exaggeration and bullshit, but it's closer to me saying actual things that are happening. As you age, everyone's life becomes a circus, more surreal. The world has been very surreal, with COVID and Trump. You kind of have to say your inner experience now. It's an emotional, crazy, surreal thing anyway. It's not like before, when I said, "I have to think about my ex-girlfriend, but I'm thinking about my wife, and what the fuck is this about?" Now, this is about being at Riot Fest. And I am at Riot Fest.
SILY: There is a song about your wife, though.
MB: Yes. Also quite literal. So many emotions are certainly exaggerated, but the sincerity isn't. The love for my wife is very real. But even there, if you're in any successful relationship, it goes through the most intense rebirths and reformations, and you're adjusting to each other, especially after having kids. It's more potent to me to say what's happening or what my emotions are than do what we did on In Defense of the Genre, where I was literally forcing drama into my life on a regular basis. Now, I have no room. I'm tired. I have children to look after. The drama just happens from kids, life, everything. It's real and heartfelt, but a seasoned emotion and not so adolescent. I still love those songs, and I relate to them, but they all speak to a certain side of me I can't live out anymore.
SILY: Do the new songs more than ever exemplify the idea that the more personal you are, the more universal the songs can be?
MB: Yeah. But probably by being a little too hyper-specific. That's why I fell in love with this kind of music. Saves The Day got me into wanting to be in a band. What wowed me was when he was talking about the names of the other band members in song, like, "Ted's drooling on his sleeve." He's just saying he's in this New Jersey bar and he misses his girlfriend. He's not cloaking anything. Our thing has been a kind of parody of that, but now I don't have to stretch anything for it to be a parody.

SILY: What do you think Brian Warren brings to the table on the new songs?
AK: I've known Brian since we were 9 years old. Our very first band, we were in together.
MB: I wouldn't know about Weatherbox if it wasn't for Alex.
AK: He brings this calming energy. Humble is a weird word to describe him.
MB: It's accurate.
AK: Weatherbox is fucking amazing.
MB: He has more impostor syndrome than even me.
AK: He can play everything, and he writes cool shit.
MB: He's a virtuoso. The cool thing about Brian is that there's always been a connection between our bands. It's similar to me playing music with [Chris] Conley [in Two Tongues] back in the day. It's surreal, but it makes so much sense that you don't have to think about where he fits into the sonic picture or personality picture because we're friends.
AK: It's very cool how much sense it makes.
SILY: Has your relationship changed to your old songs?
MB: I like them more. Over the break from the band, I would listen to Say Anything, with my kids or in my car, alone. The way I severed it was so intentional. I wasn't saying, "The band was over." I was saying, "We're probably going to get back together, but I have to sever this incarnation." I was listening to [old Say Anything songs] and thinking, "I like Alex's bass part. I like the production. I even like my voice." It was like listening to another band, because of the space. I've grown to like them. I definitely know people in bands that are not what they listen to, but Say Anything has always been a conglomeration of the type of thing we listen to. If I'm going to listen to The Get Up Kids, I might as well listen to Say Anything.
SILY: Moving forward, are you trying to continue to be more intentional, or do what feels best?
MB: Both. I know that's cliché to say, and it does and doesn't make sense. I find that intentional is my default, and before, I would second-guess myself constantly. Now, I allow myself to make mistakes, and I let other people give me advice that before were such cerebral trips. There was a lot that weighed on me. If the lyrics are super intentional and literal, I'm just going to do it. If I feel awkward in a photo shoot like right now, I'm just going to be awkward in the photo shoot. That is, of course, my safe and happy place in life.

Who/what is ur main style inspo?
hey hiii hellooooo !!!
I love this question thank u sm for sending it :3
My style and what/who inspires it has fluctuated a lot over the last few years, but only now do I feel like all the things that have previously inspired me from influential years are merging into one thing that feels like it's just me.
The particular "aesthetics"/subcultures/styles I mainly pull from are twee (mainly inspired by the way the artists who made twee pop music dressed in the late 80s/early 90s! Not so much the 2010s version of it although Zooey Deschanel has some cute outfits), 90s emo/"midwest emo" (this is mainly what I look like when I want to wear a cool outfit but I feel too overwhelmed sensory wise to wear my more fem leaning outfits! Essentially it's just me doing the hair, putting on my little fake red-framed nerd glasses, wearing any t-shirt, long sleeve, and scarf ever with my bootcut jeans, and then I feel slay) and general kitsch! I like colour and I like warmth!
Someone on Pinterest/Flickr who I see a lot and absolutely adore the style of is this alternative model called Zoetica Ebb who definitely has that whimsical kitsch vibe but with a gothic twist sometimes. I see her old pics from the 2000s a lot and just love everything about them.
Other people/things who I get a lot in my Pinterest boards rn are Sherri Dupree-Bemis from the band Eisley, Z-Berg, the other members of The Like, all the girls from Skins but mainly Cassie, Emily, Naomi, and Pandora, Hayley Williams, a lot of nameless scene queens, Helena Bonham-Carter, Blythe dolls, the members of Dolly Mixture, Clementine from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Amelia Fletcher, Alison Harvard, Cory Kennedy, a bunch of other nameless mori kei/emo/twee/hipster girls from flickr..., a few 60s fashion icons because I had a 60s dolly girl/mod phase... yeah a melting pot of vibes!!!
I also am heavily influenced by what I listen to and right now this album feels deeply like me.
#edie TxT#answers#thank you once again for sending thissss!!! I like talking abt stuff like this#edie mp3

Beyond the Gates Recap for Friday, May 2, 2025: Leslie broke off cold, hard truths for the Duprees – and Eva
ByAdam-Michael James
Here's what went down Friday, May 2, 2025 on Beyond the Gates, when Leslie went nuclear and everyone else was left to deal with the fallout.
What happened on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Doug came to check on Vanessa, who had been admitted to the hospital with nausea that may or may not have been caused by bean sprouts. Vanessa wanted to be sure Doug had expressed to Nicole and Ted why they couldn't make it to their party. Mrs. McBride was sure that Mrs. Richardson was having the night of her life.
Bill was just as happy to have skipped the Richardson shindig, but Hayley figured he'd have been there if it hadn't been for her. She noted that Bill and Ted used to be friends, and that she felt guilty for how much Bill had had to give up to be with her. Bill scoffed that Ted was no better than the rest of the Duprees. Hayley was curious and started guessing what Bill had meant; he maintained a poker face, but only until Hayley suggested that Ted had cheated on his wife. Hayley couldn't believe it.
Ted told “Dana” – in front of the Richardsons and their stunned party guests – that she was supposed to have left town, making Nicole realize that her husband knew the woman whom she recognized as “Sherry.” When Eva beseeched “Leslie” to back off, Nicole exclaimed, “How many names does she have?” Leslie made fun of how much shock Nicole was going to be in when she found out who she was. “Are you going to tell wifey who I am to you, or should I?” Leslie put to Ted.
Eva screamed for help, saying Leslie had been targeting Ted and Nicole and that the woman had locked her in the supply room. Martin and Smitty grabbed Leslie while Eva begged Ted to escort Nicole out. Nicole instructed the Richardson-Smiths to let Leslie go and demanded to know what was going on. Ted promised to tell Nicole everything, just not in front of everybody. Leslie yelled that Ted wouldn't tell Nicole the truth – but she would. She wanted everyone to know who Ted was.
While the guests became animated, and Dani barked for the “lunatic” to be removed, Nicole asked Ted if it were true that “Sherry” had been threatening him. “Not physically,” he replied sheepishly. Nicole insisted that Leslie was “Sherry,” and that Ted had only placed her as the woman from the hospital roof – but Leslie purred that “Sherry” was “one of my better get-ups.” Kat piped up that she had met her as “Anna,” and Martin added that he and Vernon had encountered her at Orphey Gene's. Naomi, who had arrived late and in the middle of the fracas, told Chelsea to stop filming, or that video would go viral like her “Gunslinger Dani” clip had after Bill and Hayley's wedding. “Word,” Chelsea agreed.
Kat revealed that the multi-named woman was a friend of Mona's, and had been the one to recommend hiring Eva as Laura's replacement. When Kat scowled that the woman and Eva had been working on the showdown together, Eva cried that she had tried to stop Leslie, only to be locked in the closet by her. The Richardsons' friend Carleton, who had freed Eva, vouched for her. “Don't worry, Your Highness,” Leslie cooed to a flummoxed Nicole. “You will hear the whole sordid story.” She told Ted that he was no longer in control.
Mona, never having seen Leslie behaving in this fashion, asked Leslie if she were out of her mind. Kat wanted Mona to confirm the revelation that Leslie and Eva shared a living space. “I didn't know they had hidden motives,” Mona apologized. Naomi desperately tried to reach Jacob while the elder Duprees sprung into action: Anita flew to Nicole's side and Vernon told the non-family guests that they intended to get help for the intruding woman, who was obviously in the middle of a medical crisis, and advised the partygoers to leave. Leslie countered that Vernon was expertly trying to gaslight them and noticed that they had stayed put, because they wanted to know what the Duprees were hiding.
Ted gave Leslie one more chance to stand down, but she vowed that his sidelining her was “not gonna work anymore...lover.” Nicole burst into tears. Ted and Dani suggested that Nicole leave, but the psychiatrist insisted upon staying, and Leslie reiterated that she had been Ted's “hanky panky lover.” Kat told Eva that if she really wanted to stop Leslie, Eva needed to tell everyone that Leslie was lying. Leslie assured Kat that she hadn't even been born when she was with Ted, but asked Martin if he remembered the nice waitress who used to give him brownies when Ted took the young boy to a coffee shop. Martin did.
Ted wanted his family kept out of the ambush, but Leslie announced that Ted had been ready to leave that family for her. “That is a lie!” Ted shouted; Leslie replied that Ted sure had been convincing back in the day, and because of that, she'd thought that he'd be thrilled when she gave him the news that she was pregnant. Nicole nearly wilted. Ted denied Leslie's claim that he'd told her he was staying with Nicole because she was pregnant as well; Leslie explained how Ted had made her leave town and get an abortion, appealing to Nicole to understand how she had felt. The Duprees blanched when Leslie revealed that Ted had called Bill, who had dared Leslie to have her baby anyway and threatened to have the child kidnapped and sold to the black market if she did.
Leslie was sure Ted had known to what lengths Bill would go, and so she had given in – to a point. She had taken Ted's money, gone to Chicago, and given birth in secret. Leslie introduced Eva to Ted as his daughter, causing Kat to yelp, “No...no!” and clutch her brother Martin. Eva had been crying quietly, but expressed dismay that Leslie had told Ted she'd had an abortion – Eva had grown up thinking her father hadn't wanted anything to do with her. Kat called the whole thing a con. Andre and Ted suggested that the Richardsons' talk about the revelation in private. And Nicole, sobbing, ran out of the room. Kat followed.
Vernon ordered Ted to explain himself, but Ted – and Martin – gave chase to Nicole. When Leslie called after Martin, reminding him that Eva was his half-sister, Smitty commanded her to be quiet. Dani wanted to confront Leslie, but her parents stopped her. Chelsea and Naomi were sick at the thought of how vicious their father had apparently been with Leslie.
In the country club lobby, Martin stopped Ted; the congressman had put together the timing. Martin now realized what his parents would whisper about when they thought he wasn't listening. He remembered how distraught Nicole had been recovering from her miscarriages – and that was the time Ted had gotten another woman pregnant? Ted tried to defuse the confrontation, but Martin fathomed that Ted had only taken him to the diner as a boy as a smokescreen so Ted could see Leslie. “You're despicable!” Martin roared, shoving his father hard. Smitty ran up and urged the furious Martin to breathe, escorting his husband out.
Eva timidly approached Ted, who didn't want to talk to her. He kicked himself for not listening to Kat, who had been right all along that Eva had been up to no good. Eva conceded that Kat had seen through her, but asserted that, all her life, Leslie had drilled it into her about how Ted had abandoned her, and now she didn't know what to think. “That makes two of us,” Ted granted. Eva pleaded with Ted to understand how she had tried to stop Leslie and implored Ted for forgiveness.
Leslie entered, sneering that Eva should be asking for her forgiveness after painting her as crazy to everyone. Ted left to find Nicole, and Leslie reinforced her position that Ted couldn't be counted on, seething that Eva had made the wrong choice. With that, Leslie left Eva alone, weeping.
Anita swore to Mona that she bore no responsibility for letting Leslie recommend Eva as Nicole's assistant. Vernon looked forward to taking Ted's “narrow behind” to task for bringing Leslie into their lives. When Dani came by, Anita told her to bring Naomi and Chelsea to the house so they could figure out how to do damage control.
Vanessa wrapped up a call from Nicole, telling Doug how the Richardsons had been blindsided at their party. Doug agreed that Nicole was wonderful and hadn't deserved what Ted had done to her, but he also pointed out to Vanessa that they didn't know the whole story, and therefore shouldn't make judgments. “People do stray,” Doug commented. “I wouldn't think I'd need to tell you that.” Vanessa tried to weave around the subject, but Doug remembered how Vanessa hadn't been upset when Bill cheated on Dani. “Some couples have...understandings,” Vanessa said cryptically, pivoting to how that hadn't been the case with Ted and Nicole.
Andre understood that Dani needed to beg off their date and couldn't believe what he had just witnessed. Dani humphed that, for once, the chaos didn't revolve around her; Andre didn't want Dani beating up on herself. Dani's heart hurt for her daughters, the way they'd had to hear how their father had menaced Leslie. It was Andre's observation that Leslie wasn't all there, and therefore, what she'd said about Bill wasn't necessarily true. Dani felt that if even part of the story had merit, it was a bridge too far, especially given Bill's “ethical blind spots.”
Turning back to the subject of Ted, Andre noted that his uncle had been faithful for the twenty-plus years following his indiscretion, but Dani couldn't be sure what further secrets her brother-in-law was hiding. Dani thought that Andre was unusually calm about the skeletons that had just come out; Andre merely said he was unshockable, then looked around quickly to make sure no one saw him giving Dani a kiss.
Ted ran into his house, calling for Nicole. He found Kat instead; she told him that, because Nicole wanted to be left alone, that had to mean that Nicole considered Leslie's story to be true. Kat needed Ted to assure her it wasn't, but Ted could only say that he didn't know if Leslie had had her baby, or if Eva was that baby. Ted tried to impress upon Kat that his selfish affair had happened before she was born, but she didn't want to hear it, and walked out on him.
Andre saw Eva sitting alone in the lobby. She nodded when he asked if she were really his Uncle Ted's daughter. Andre deduced that fact made them cousins. Eva wished she'd known sooner that Ted wasn't a deadbeat dad, as Leslie had wanted her to believe. Andre defended Ted and admitted that, like Eva, he could also have stopped Leslie...because Ted had told him about the affair. Yet Andre had convinced Ted not to confess to Nicole. Eva felt bad for Andre.
Leslie returned to the empty banquet room and poured herself a glass of Ted and Nicole's champagne. Unexpectedly, Nicole entered, and Leslie advised her to say her piece and leave so she could continue enjoying “the good stuff.” Nicole refused to compete with Leslie for Ted's affections; Nicole remarked how Ted had changed, becoming more carefree and spontaneous – but she had thought that had happened because the birth of Kat had set right their marriage. Nicole divulged that Ted's “light” had dimmed a few years afterwards, and when Leslie presumed that Ted had gotten boring, Nicole didn't disagree. Nicole deemed Leslie vivacious and bold and surmised that Ted needed someone like her. Leslie praised Nicole for being woman enough to let Ted walk away...but Leslie had only been imagining her nemesis.
At the Dupree manse, Dani and Anita were worried that they hadn't been able to reach Nicole, but Chelsea and Naomi reported that they had gotten a text from Kat stating that Nicole and come home and headed for the shower. Vernon and Dani wished they could write off Leslie's admissions as the rantings of a crazy woman; the raging Martin didn't know if the part about Eva being Ted's daughter was true, but he had confirmed Ted's affair. Vernon was disappointed in Ted and exchanged glances with Martin when Bill's daughters asked if Bill could really have been so cruel to Leslie. “Ask him point blank!” Martin growled.
As Bill massaged Hayley's foot, he got a text from Naomi. “Holy hell,” he exclaimed upon reading it. Bill detailed how Ted's secret had been exposed and how Bill's daughters were adamant that they learn exactly what part Bill had played in everything. Bill disagreed with Hayley that Naomi and Chelsea would simply see Bill as someone trying to protect his brother-in-law's marriage.
Kat returned to the country club to retrieve her purse and ran into Eva, who repeated to Kat that she was right all along.
At the Richardson home, Ted stood in the dark, and Nicole entered. Ted apologized, but all Nicole could do was shake her head.
Beyond the Gates Recap for Monday, May 12, 2025: Leslie admitted her love for Ted and Mona read the Thomas' beads
Beyond the Gates Daily YAPP Recap, May 12: Vanessa does right by Doug, Doug does right by none
The family discussed “that awful child,” Eva, working for Nicole and spying on her, and how Kat seemed to have a sixth sense about Eva that no one else did. Chelsea wondered if Kat had picked up on the fact that Eva was her half-sister. “No,” Dani spouted. “Kat probably sensed that Eva is actually a lying little bitch!” The doorbell rang, confusing everybody considering the late hour – their visitor was Leslie.
Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS and streams on Paramount Plus.

Eisley – Room Noises / Combinations
Because I’ve been a music fan for so long, I tend to forget how I come across most bands and artists. A lot of them are through word of mouth, or I find them on a website or blog, but there are those bands I won’t forget how I found, even after almost two decades of being a music fan. One of those bands is Eisley; I got into them around the summer of 2007, and I was getting into a lot of music at the time, but it was a case of watching a late night TV show and sticking around to watch a musical guest. I was watching Late Night With Conan O’Brien, and the band performed the song “Invasion,” which was from their upcoming sophomore album, entitled Combinations. I loved what I heard, because it was this weird, off-putting, and strange-sounding indie-pop song that was still very catchy and pleasant. I was surprised that the rest of the album wasn’t like that, but more so a mixture of indie-rock, alt-rock, alt-country, and folk-rock. Their debut album, 2005’s Room Noises, was also a bit of an interesting album, having an indie-pop / indie-rock sound. I picked that up right afterwards, which is something I did back then a lot; if there was a band or artist I found that I really liked, I would listen to their new album, and then I’d pick up anything else they had the following week if I really liked what I heard. Back then, I was able to find a lot of stuff in stores, as CDs were pretty common, but I can just stream something nowadays. Being that it was May the Fourth recently, and this band is named after a Star Wars reference (the city of Mos Eisley on the planet Tatooine), now’s the best time to do it. Eisley is one of my favorite bands, and they’re also an extremely underrated one, because I don’t hear anybody talk about this band. Maybe it’s partially because their last album came out in 2017, and from what I remember, it wasn’t anything too great. I don’t remember the band putting anything outright awful, but even back then, I wasn’t as enthralled with their last couple of albums as I was with their first few. Their first two albums are the ones that I would easily recommend (their third album is pretty good, too, in all fairness), as their last couple of albums would move more into dream-pop and more straightforward indie-pop / rock. Their first two albums, however, were more of a baroque-pop and indie-pop sound that were also incredibly fun and whimsical. They had a Beatles-esque quality to them, mainly for its weird, strange, and surreal lyricism that doesn’t make sense. Their debut, 2005’s Room Noises, really has that, and the follow-up, 2007’s Combinations, kind of does, too, but it’s a bit more played down. 2011’s The Valley would be a more straightforward indie-rock album, and I remember it was pretty good, but it was a little less interesting or unique than their last couple of albums. Even between Room Noises and Combinations, there was a bit of a shift in sound, but it wasn’t a bad one. They still had that whimsical indie-pop sound, but they added more elements to it. There are songs with folk, alt-country, and a bit of new wave and synth-pop, so there was some variety there. Their debut has some variety, too, but it mainly floats around between an indie-pop and rock album. What makes it work extremely well, however, are its hooks, and this band is rife with catchy melodies and hooks.
That’s kind of because of their vocalists, and this band had multiple vocalists at one point, especially on their first couple of albums. The band was comprised of the DuPree siblings, including Sherri, Chauntelle, and Stacy, and they all contributed vocals, as well as played instruments, but part of the charm of their first couple of albums is that the vocal harmonies were utterly gorgeous. All three sisters could sing very well, even though Sherri was the lead vocalist, which she still is today. Room Noises isn’t particularly a perfect record, as the lyrics are a bit too nonsensical sometimes, and they do sound like word salad a lot of the time, but the melodies are really nice, so I can’t complain too much. Combinations is a better record overall, both because the songwriting is more interesting and diverse, but the lyrics are better written, more cohesive, and coherent, versus just being borderline gibberish (other than that the lyrics provide some interesting imagery). I tend to look at both albums as being complementary to each other, though, because you can hear the shift in sound and the improvement from Room Noises to Combinations. The latter album is also a lot shorter, only being 34 minutes, whereas Room Noises is 41, but it does feel a little longer, only because the album gets slightly boring in the latter half. It’s not that it’s bad, or the songs aren’t any good, but a lot of the record sounds the same. A lot of the songs feature the same formula, including a very nice chorus, whimsical lyrics and instrumentation, as well as wonderful vocal harmonies, and an indie-rock / pop backbone to drive it all home, but it all sounds the same. It sounds great, and it holds up very well after twenty years, but Combinations is a better record. If you want to listen to this band, which I would encourage it, that’s the album to start off with, but Room Noises is a pretty cool album, too, and it has some solid stuff in it.

Liner Notes (April 5th, 2025)
It’s a relatively short one this week. This week’s supporter Q&A post can be found here. If you’d like this newsletter delivered to your inbox each week (it’s free and available to everyone), you can sign up here. A Few Things * This week marked the ninth anniversary of Chorus.fm. I wanted to extend my thanks to those that subscribe and read this newsletter as well as everyone that continues to visit the website on a regular basis. * I had the first couple of days off work this week and then returned on Wednesday to an overflowing inbox. The rest of the week was playing catchup and I didn’t have a whole lot of time to listen to music on Friday. So, I’ve been trying to get caught up on new releases this weekend. In Case You Missed It * My Life In 35 Songs, Track 2: “Hanging By A Moment” by Lifehouse * Review: Underoath – The Place After This One * Review: Mumford and Sons – Rushmere * “Why Jesse Lacey and Brand New Should Not Be Touring” * Sherri Dupree and Max Bemis Announce Separation * FORAGER – “Hello To The Kiddies” (Song Premiere) * Mark Hoppus Interview With the New York Times * Albums in Stores – Apr 4th, 2025 Music Thoughts * The weather was strange this week, it was starting to warm up a little, and then got rainy again, then some more sun, then rainy. It led to it being a pretty heavy The Gaslight Anthem and Brian Fallon music week. Basically perfect for any weather, right? Blue jeans and white t-shirts forever. * I’ve had the time to check out two new things this week so far: I thought the new Wet album Two Lives was a solid indie-pop listen. I loved the debut, and found some good stuff in the last two, but neither really stuck with me long term. This one feels like it has a good chance. I also gave the that Knox album a couple spins and I understand there’s a level of cheesiness to it, but enjoyed the pop of it all. It’s catchy, has some clear pop-punk influences on it, but it’s totally saccharine fun. I can see this sitting in rotation over the summer. * I have heard good things about that new Momma album, so that’s next on my list to check out. The Stats: Over the past week, I listened to 26 different artists, 34 different albums, and 349 different tracks (370 scrobbles). Here is my Top 9 from last week, and you can follow me on Apple Music and/or Last.fm. Entertainment Thoughts * We started the second season of Severance. It’s as good as advertised so far. Loved the first season and it doesn’t look like they’ve missed a step. Random and Personal Stuff * The stock market chaos and uncertainty was difficult to stomach all week. This is now the second massive collapse I’ve witnessed in my lifetime. (The first being 2008.) I don’t really have words to describe any of it. We’re all being pulled along by the whims of a madman. A very good portion of my life has now been Republicans causing economic crashes and Democrats coming in and it taking years to clean it up. Then it repeats. It’s indescribably depressing. Each Saturday I sit down and do a weekly review of finances, just to make sure we’re looking good on budget for the month, categorize transactions in Copilot (still my favorite budget/finance app), and get an overview of the landscape. This morning was just brutal and depressing. I know the math. I know the high probability of a rebound over the long term. I know the reasons that by the time I retire this will hopefully be a blip. But watching the drop and seeing the loss and going to work feeling like it’s for “free,” can only be described as: soul crushing. * March was pretty fun though. Ten Songs Here are ten songs that I listened to and loved this week. Some may be new, some may be old, but they all found their way into my life during the past seven days. * Knox – All American Tragedy * Wet – Rosy * Grayscale – Kept Me Alive * Origami Angel – Underneath My Skin * MxPx – Let it Happen * Brian Fallon – Honey Magnolia * HAIM – Everybody’s… https://chorus.fm/features/articles/liner-notes-april-5th-2025/
