WoL Spotlight: Etienne Vernoux-Livreau de Guillemette
Etienne Vernoux-Livreau (de Guillemette)
Etienne's mother, Marianne Vernoux, worked as a barmaid at the Forgotten Knight in Ishgard. She had a one-night stand with Ser Pierre Livreau, a Holy See lancer from House Guillemette. Marianne kept Etienne's existence a secret from Pierre.
He spent his early childhood living with his mother in the Brume. He helped in the tavern by waiting tables and running errands. Etienne knew his way around Ishgard's dark alleys and streets. Whenever adventurers came to the Forgotten Knight, he begged them for stories about their travels.
Marianne fell ill and died when Etienne was 11. Pierre went to her bedside and was dumbstruck that she never told him that he had a son. Pierre decided to give his son a better life and took him to be trained as a squire.
Unfortunately, Etienne discovered that he was a strong talent for magecraft. During a skirmish with bandits, he defended his father and a group of trainees with offensive magic. The Inquisitors of the Holy See found out about this and took his to be trained as an Inquisitor over his father's objections.
His time with the Inquisitors scarred him, and left him with a cynical attitude towards magic in general and odd habits and phobias. Etienne escaped to Gridania when he was 16, and became an adventurer and a lancer-for-hire.
He didn't return to Ishgard until Heavensward. Count Edmont had known his father. (Pierre had conveniently 'sought Halone's Halls' during a skirmish with dragons. Edmont suspected the Inquisitors had arranged Pierre's demise, though he couldn't prove it.) It was that (and Haurchefant's good word) that convinced him to take him as a ward. Etienne met Ser Alberic Bale, the former Azure Dragoon, who helped train him as a Dragoon.
Later he met and married his wife, a Xaela named Bess Dotharl, who is a cousin of Sadu. During their courtship, they sparred, and she kicked his arse. He married her anyway. They went to work for Captain Lear Dzamael's mercenary company in Ishgard.

NO ROBES! (apologies to Edna Mode, Etienne Vernoux)
Etienne has this thing with robes. He won't wear them, even if he's in a healing or casting job. No matter how simple or elaborate or even if he would look good in them. He usually plays it off as being comfortable and practical in combat. His usual go-to outfit is the Falconer's Shirt and Pants. It just happens to come with an extra small dagger on the belt, which suits him just fine. Think Edna Mode and "NO CAPES." Many people in the Astrologicum, the Thamaturges and the Arcanists' Guild think it's a strange habit, even a bit unhinged, since he's almost militant about it. Especially since he had no problem with armor as a Warrior or a Dragoon. Why have an issue with big, funny hats when you can't see a damn thing wearing a Dragoon helmet? In fact, Etienne has a reason for his dislike of robes. The Holy See Inquisitors learned about his talent for magecraft close to his 12th nameday. They took him from his father, who had been training him as a squire, without Pierre's consent. He spent the next five years under the thumb of the Inquisitors. Etienne still doesn't tell people about that time of his life (even his wife Bess and his Arcanist Mentor, Morroyo), but he endured all sorts of trauma: mental, physical, emotional and spiritual. He does get nightmares from time to time, and they often manifest in an Inquisitor wearing robes. So he refuses to wear elaborate robes, even though he is a powerful spellcaster, and people notice and ridicule him for it.

Morroyo as a Job Mentor/Guildmaster
Morroyo's questline would go more into the various Primals and the history of the Allagan summoner, but it's more showing than just TELLING them. He'd take them to various Allagan ruins, like the ones near Carteneau and the Crystal Tower. Also the ones connected with Mhach. Instead of just lecturing about them, he'd get his students actively in the field, taking readings, making observations, etc. Morroyo is very much the hands-on type. He would also ask learned scholars to help as well. G'raha Tia, first and foremost. Y'mithra and Rammbroes and the researchers in Mor Dhona. K'rhid Tia and Guildmistress Thurbygeim of the Arcanists' Guild. Surito Carito and Alka Zolka of the Nymian Scholars. Finally, he'd also introduce non-Eorzean traditions as well, like Geomancy, Hannish Alchemy and Ishgardian Astrology. Just because it's 'different' doesn't mean it's 'backwards'. (That attitude rankled him in both the WHM and AST storylines). The student would think him a cool professor type, but a bit weird compared to typical mentors/guildmasters. He expects a lot from his students and will not hesitate to tell his students if they're not performing to expectations.

The Master Becomes the Student Again

Morroyo decides to do Blue Mage (aka Morroyo No Longer Has Low Level Magic Stuff and Has to Get Some xD). "I remember this ugly gear..." And to be honest, he and Martyn are like oil and water. The seasoned Summoner and the Charlatan Blue Mage...he's not exactly thrilled about being under Martyn's tutelage. Morroyo's been in the Arcanist Guild long enough, so there's a chance that he was there (or teaching there) when Martyn was, before Martyn went to the New World. He's only at level 25, so this will be interesting.

Morroyo in the Future (~30+ years post Endwalker)

Morroyo in his 80's or so. His hair is all white, but he's more dignified as a Scholar (in that older Obi-Wan Kenobi way). He may have finally earned his Scion tattoo, and if he has, he has it on the back of his right hand. Morroyo would never be a member of the Forum, even in the Sharlayan AU. True to Azem, he doesn't want to be tied down to the island or deal with Forum procedure and politics. Now Cat(Great?)Grandpa, but still offers tea and advice. He owns a tea shop in Limsa and one in Kugane. His husband Lethe takes care of the chess sets in the corner. Of all the accolades he's earned, his students and his tea houses are probably his proudest. Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn asked him if he wanted any reward for his service to the Maelstrom as an officer and as the Warrior of Light. Morroyo only asked for continued support for his endeavors for peace on Etheriys, and a place of his own. Now he's retired from active duty, He's slowed down a bit, doesn't travel as often anymore, but still the same. He has several biological children, including his eldest son Rique. Rique trained as a shaman for the M tribe, eventually earning his grandfather's (Morroyo's father's) position as First Shaman. Morroyo also has several adopted children and his circle of students and friends. At the end of his life, Morroyo has few regrets, but he's glad that he's seen and experienced so much. He's more than willing to leave the future to the younger ones.

Morroyo's First Echo
The question originally posted by sasslett
Technically, Morroyo first manifested the Echo at the very beginning of ARR. (His story doesn’t strictly follow in-game timeline or job quests) He was on the boat to Limsa. After the boat pulled into dock after the intro scene, he was about to disembark and talk to the first Roegadyn NPC, when the Echo hit him. (The whole “Hear...Feel...Think...” thing.) It disoriented him so badly he fell off the gangplank and into the ocean. And since he’s originally from the Sagolii Desert...he was a lousy swimmer at the time. Luckily for him, his Arcanist mentor (whom he was supposed to meet at the dock) saw him go overboard and dove in after him. Another man--a Moon Keeper--saw what was happening and went to go assist. Together they saved Morroyo before he drowned. The Arcanist mentor? Master Rafael Baquiran, who eventually taught Morroyo all about arcanima. After Rafael died, Morroyo took his surname in his honor. The Moon Keeper? Lethe Tavoss, the man Morroyo eventually married.

What’s Up with Cid’s Goggles? (A Realm Reborn)
I'm a little confused by this (it's on the way to the Garuda fight). Lilene sees Cid’s history through the Echo, and Cid talks about his privileged childhood and training as an engineer in Garlemald. Then how he fled to Eorzea with Biggs and Wedge. It's implied that it's the *WoL* who gave Cid the goggles to hid his third eye. When did this happen? It has to be before Carteneau because Cid had ended up in Thanalan with memory loss afterwards. Some WoLs were at Carteneau as “The Warriors of Light” and were time shifted 5 years in the future by Louisoix Levilleur’s magic (from the original 1.0). Lilene was not one of these. A few intrepid souls from Lilene’s Enclave in Gridania did fight at Carteneau, but none of them survived, and the effects from the Calamity did adversely Lilene’s life after that. So why did Cid see Lilene? He mentioned his third eye gives him special awareness as a pureblood Garlean. He can’t use aether, but it doesn’t mean he can’t detect it. I don’t think it was the specific Warrior of Light per se that he saw that night. Cid didn’t even know what they *looked* like until he met them as Marques. I think it was Hydalyn. The WoL is wreathed in light as they hand Cid the goggles. I think Hydalyn showed up to let him know that he was on the right path, that going to Eorzea was fulfilling his destiny. Since the WoL has Her blessing, Cid’s third eye picked up on it, and he even said he ‘recognized’ her. In Endwalker, we find out just why the Warrior of Light always seems to find allies when they need them. Maybe Hydalyn was already lining things up for them even before ARR?

A Long Flight Back...Maybe? (FFXIV, Heavensward)

Lilene’s first reaction to riding back to Foundation with Haurchefant. “Oh...dear.” Not because she doesn’t want his company, of course. Far from it. He’s not like the other Ishgardians she’s met. He’s openminded and not one to harbor secrets like ammunition. Lilene actually finds it rather refreshing. But for the first time, she also finds that she doesn’t want to leave his company. Oh, dear, indeed.

An Unexpected Welcome (FFXIV, Heavensward)
Lilene meets her adoptive dad and brothers, but she doesn’t know it yet. XD She lost most of her family in the Calamity, and she and her older brother had lost contact with each other when he went to the Far East. Ishgard is not very welcoming of outsiders, but she’s used to that kind of mindset from her upbringing in Gridania. Plus the circumstances after the Bloody Banquet and having to flee north has done a number on her mental state. So Count Edmont's kind hospitality stuns her almost to speechlessness. Lilene expected a grudging welcome and an attitude of ‘since my son insisted, I’ll allow you to stay here only for a short while.’ Granted, she also expected that she needs to be useful to House Fortemps during her stay. And she's VERY aware of Haurchefant's presence in the room. The one man in Ishgard who championed her cause, from finding Cid’s Enterprise to arranging for sanctuary with his family. Lilene is very grateful to him, though she’s still confused over WHY he would do it for someone he’s only known for a short time. It also doesn’t help that she realizes she has feelings for him, but she’d never admit it to Alphinaud or Tataru, much less herself.

Lilene and Haurchefant (FFXIV, A Realm Reborn)
Lilene and Haurchefant fight back to back... For the first time, she feels like she can trusts someone enough to even WATCH her back. And frankly, it's a rather odd, but welcome feeling. Definitely NOT what she expected when she came to Ishgard, especially dealing with the likes of Forlemont (Lilene is NOT very charitable to that old goat of an Astrologian). The fact that the commander of Camp Dragonhead values her opinion, trusts that she will get the job done, and even helps her in combat is a big plus. When she talks to one of Haurchefant’s informants, her reaction is "Uh...what? Quite fond of ME?!" Apparently word travels fast in Camp Dragonhead. She's used to gossip in small communities (she's FROM one) but she's not used to being the subject of it. If anything, she’s used to keeping her head down and not garner too much attention. Being a Duskwight in Gridania is a hazard just for EXISTING, so she’s learned to avoid the spotlight. And she may be getting fond of a certain Ishgardian knight herself...though she denies it to herself. After all, after they find the Enterprise, she’ll never see him again. Right?

The Calm Before the Storm (FFXIV, Lilene Asterneau, Heavensward)
The calm before the storm... She feels that she can smile again when he's there. The only thing that they need to do is to let everyone know they are together. It’s no big secret at this point; in fact, everyone in Fortemps manor know, including Alphinaud and Tataru. Of course, once they take care of the crisis at the Vault and rescue Ser Aymeric, it will be a new chapter in their lives, despite the shadow of trouble in Ishgard.

Politics and Sacrificial Pawns (FFXIV, Lilene Asterneau, Heavensward)
Politics be damned, Lilene wanted to punt Lolorito to Kugane and back. Just hearing Lolorito's smarmy bragging about having the Crystal Braves in his pocket and threatening Raubahn...Lilene's mad as hell. She HATES the Monetarists. Lolorito is damn lucky he's protected. Lilene's come a long way from being a shy wallflower in Gridania, but after the Bloody Banquet and dealing with politics from the Eorzean nations, she's not exactly happy with the lot of them. One thing that doesn't sit well with me in MSQ is how the WoL keeps getting shafted big time...with no consequences to the big players like Lolorito. Even the Eorzean leaders seem to consider her expendable, as seen here. Lilene's simmering with resentment at this point, and not knowing what's ahead (Vault spoilers), she's a ticking time bomb. Things will come to a head for her, very soon.

Sharlayan Snobbery
Well, after dumping the Hingan geomancy student on Lewin, then calling geomancy a ‘backwards belief’... Lewin’s not exactly keen on that, especially after he had JUST helped Leveva deal with a Sharlayan who wanted to hoard knowledge from the ‘uneducated masses’. He’s been to Kugane and Yanxia and has met people there with other beliefs, like Yugiri, Hien and Obero. Oh, Leveva, honey, your Sharlayan snobbery is showing. :-/
