I grew up listening to music that my dad listened to in school in the 1960s and 70s and sometimes you listen to music from then and now and you’re like huh the deeply American sense of loneliness and discontent with the state of this country that’s always just beneath the surface that wells up in you like a slow familiar but no less deadly flood when you’re alone at a bus station or driving alone at night on a country road has existed for a long time huh

cried my eyes out while making this edit. set it in paul’s pov. i tried to imply many things here - how paul’s religion and his love tie together (aka art and his voice being an “angel” or “angelic”, usual descriptors by paul), plus many more themes that are subtly laced.

i also did my best to root out every song writing lyric that the two could’ve written about the other or picked out lyrics that fit the imagery of the two. considered putting art’s poetry in, but decided not to.
