Just taste-tested a slew of perfectly good dramas to then start the one I’ve been forgetting to watch forever (OK, like 2-3 years)

Skate Into Love

It’s funny because this one is actually the one I have the most critical eye for, but it has the right mix for me right now of silly humor, fun conflict, and a sense of escape.

So I just acknowledge my criticisms of the skating/rink scenes and move on, lol

It’s painting college both as the fun sleep-away-camp world that it can feel like and yet puts some veritas in the way a campus world is very small and you end up around miscellaneous people by circumstance rather than choice. Very light, but having the two vet school students rooming with a philosophy major is a kind of grounding touch that helps this show feel a little more connected to reality.

Not that its connection to reality is a major concern or even a feature. I’m glad that the trailer’s overplayed the “figure skater vs. hockey player vs. speed skater” rivalry element of this, at least so far.

Janice (Qian) Wu is great again in this role as charismatic and spunky in a way that can be a bit domineering. Zhang Xicheng gives enough glimmers of affection to it that the lead’s revenge scheme always has that sense of turning to something more.

One of the side characters is a bit of a scene stealer for me, and though it feels like the rhetoric becomes a little heavy handed at times, I can also acknowledge that and keep enjoying the general storyline. I like most of the side characters so far, which is also nice in a series that does a lot of ensemble scenes.

Not gonna lie, I am a little concerned now I see that it’s 40 episodes long, since I’m not sure what the storyline has to offer at that length (and I saw a still from an episode deep in that made me go ‘hmmm’) but for now this strikes the right tone of engaging but not too taxing emotionally.

And also, it’s not dubbed, in that occasionally I notice ADR. Which I prefer even if it’s not as clean.

like we get it he's our pathetic little meow meow baby sheep emo boy we know and we also knew he never had a chance with Tang Xue in the first place

but then suddenly in the middle of this very normal college sport rom com we get this dream sequence like representation of his emotional state that just gets more and more dramatic culminating in pretty intense under water shots

... and then we just go back to like a regular college sport rom com drama

like out of nowhere the director just went balls. to. the. wall. for like ten minutes then said nevermind we're good I got it out of my system back to your regularly scheduled programming

Yuri on Ice was such a life changing anime, especially to have experienced in real time waiting for those episodes to drop every week. It was an open acknowledgment and love letter to queerness, to valuing and creating art, to loving yourself and loving those around you and it’s no surprise that it had such a large impact on those who watched it. Not to mention how stunning it was to be presented with an open letter to queer love during a time where same sex marriage and gender equality was still a very hot and controversial topic. It’s, in its own way, nestled itself into history.

It may not be in the way we all expected or hoped, but see you next level.
