Title: Shadow the Hedgehog: The Ultimate Love Triangle?

Dear Readers,

I've been neglecting you all by reporting on other, less interesting celebrities instead of the antihero you've been asking for! You can take complaints about the lack of Shadow news up with the editor. Anyway, I have big news for you! Via the most trustworthy source available, tumblr dot com, I have discovered new information that points to the most eligible emo hedgehog bachelor being eligible no longer. Surprisingly, he seems to now be romantically involved with none other than fellow celeb and hero of the world, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!

You might be wondering how this unlikely pairing of near identical hedgehogs came to be the newest superpowered power-couple. Did Shadow know more about mistletoe than he was letting on? It all began earlier this month, when our beloved hero followed our beloved antihero on Tumblr. How can I be so sure that this was the Sonic of our world, you may be thinking. After all, it's widely known that Tumblr is an excellent conduit for interdimentional communication. You see, among Shadow's numerous posts were some discussions with the Sonic user that implied the two had met in real life, so I can safely assume this is the Sonic you know and love! But I digress. While Sonic has been flirtatious with numerous alternate Shadows, Shadow has mostly interacted with this Sonic and has seemed to react jealously when Sonic has flirted with his alternate selves. I know, the edgy hedgy can be quite adorable when he wants to be! The events came to a climax yesterday, when our dearly beloved edgehog confessed his love to Sonic for all to see (if you have a Tumblr account).

Now what does this mean for you, dear reader? For one, it means some of you might need to change your New Years vision board a little bit. I mean, who would have suspected the potential evil starfish in disguise would go for the most likely person to thwart his hypothetically evil plans? But don't be too hasty, because there might already be trouble in paradise! Shadow might not be the only villainous character our hero's been eyeing.

While flirting with the hedgehog version of Avril Lavigne's "Sk8tr Boi", Sonic has also taken to admiring the confirmed (take that, editor!) evil personality, Infinite the Jackel! You might remember Infinite from when he almost took over the world with Doctor Eggman a while back. Indeed he was one of the captors of our beloved hero when he was missing for several months during the war. However, the hedgehog has been remarking lately on the jackel's beauty. And who can blame him, really? Who can resist a mysterious guy with an incredibly angular mask. Polygons anywhere on the body are very in right now, or so I've heard from our fashion and gemstone correspondent. Overall, this whole situation seems like a scene straight out of a Dollar Chao romance novel! However, Shadow doesn't seem quite so enthused. Immediately after Sonic interacted with the Jackel in question, Shadow immediately discouraged it. He seemed very invested on Sonic's wellbeing, not to mention that he's the jealous type from what I've seen.

Only time will tell where this romance will lead. Will it last, or was Shadow's confession part of a more sinister plan? Will Sonic be forced to choose between the Hedgehog and the Jackel, like Bella the Swan with Edward and Jacob? We'll have to wait and see! Until next time!

SO! I saw the sweet @rxincarnatxd‘s follower appreciation post, and I decided that since I had some artwork lying around on my iPad, that I could use it for this 80 90 (!!!) FOLLOWERS APPRECIATION POST! AND OMGOSH LET ME JUST SAY THAT THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE RESPONSE TO AN OC OF MINE! I’ve been roleplaying for a very long time myself across a variety of different places, and Howl’s only been around for a little over A MONTH and there’s already like NINETY OF YOU! I know that I’m not following like each and every one of you (and I’m honestly following a bunch of blogs at the moment!), but I really appreciate you guys none the less. I’m just super happy that you guys like this guy, and man, I’ve just had quite a few OCs, but they never quite stuck. Howl feels very different though, and he’s certainly wormed his way into my little heart and I don’t think he’ll be leaving any time soon. SO THANKS!! She’s Not There Part 2

THIS IS A SMALL UPDATE!  PLEASE READ MY NOTE.

Summary:  After returning to the States you struggle to understand Arthur’s book as much as he struggles to let you go.

A/N: I got more requests for small updates than a large one.  Goal is to have this done by Friday! Also, this was for a challenge I signed up for and then the host left tumblr because of hate.  I miss her, and please be nice to each other. This is based on The Zombie’s She’s Not There

To say the book was weird would be an understatement.  You never read Chuck Shurley before, but you thought his work had more…plot.  The thing read like a user manual or a report.  That didn’t mean it was bad though, in fact once you were done with the first read you started again.  

It had to have been a companion, for the super fans.  But you didn’t think those novels were popular enough, or had super fans.  There was no way the suave Brit was running around in his free time going to fan conventions, he was way too uptight for that sort of thing.  

When you landed your car was at the airport, all your possessions still in your trunk.  You drove straight to a cheap motel and got a room for the week. The way back meant flying against the time change and it was actually earlier in the day than it had been when you left, but sun-up or not you were exhausted.

Once you were in your room you plopped down on the bed.  You reached into the bag on the floor and pulled out Arthur’s book. Right now you were regretting not getting a way to contact the man.  You wanted to tease him about his super fan status and a smile came to your face imagining his response.

“A man needs a hobby darling.” You tried your best British accent. “Or: I said I worked with monsters.”

The smile fell off your face and you opened the book again.  No.  He couldn’t have been literal, besides, monsters didn’t exist.  You rolled your eyes, certain now that you were much to tired to think clearly.  You wondered what the British man was doing at the moment, your heart hurting at the thought of ditching him the way you had.

Of course it was for the best. He was getting too attached, and who knows? Maybe you would have caved and made a mistake by staying in England with a complete stranger?  America was where you belonged and you were far to level headed to change your entire life for a man.  

The memory of his tongue on yours, his hands running up your sides brought the smile back to your face as you drifted off to a sleep, clutching the only memento of the man who gave you one of the best week’s of your life.

It was almost ten o’clock on a Sunday, long quitting time, but Ketch had no plans on leaving as he continued to flip through the photos of every single American hunter.  There had to be some connection to his Amy. Some would call him an obsessive man, but he saw it more as drive.  

“What are you doing here?” Mick walked into the library with a book in hand.

“Research.” Ketch did not look up from the computer.

“I’ve said it before, but don’t bother trying to find her.” Mick put away his book and went to the table Ketch was at. “The girl is a ghost.” “Except for she isn’t.”  Another female who looked nothing like Amy was on the screen. He was long passed the point of searching for her.  Now he was looking for parents, or a siblings, or even a cousin.  Anyone that shared a feature was being added to a list.  

“It’s been three months.” Mick looked concerned. “We’ve tried every angle.  She’s not there.”

Arthur glared at Mick. Right now he wanted to hate his colleague, but the man had  assisted in the search.   “With out a town or a state it’s impossible.”  Mick shook his head. “There’s no mention of her on any research involving hunters. Until Dr. Hess wants to invade America our hands are tied.”  

“She has let them run rampant over there.  It will happen soon.” Ketch knew Mick agreed.

“The country has over thirty million people. Even when that happens how likely are you to find your Amy?” Mick raised his eyes brows. “There are plenty of birds over here.  We could go that pub you like near your place, maybe one will wander in.”

Ketch clenched his fist. Of course Mick had no clue that was how he met his Amy, but the suggestion was rubbing salt in his wounds.  Maybe Mick was on to something though.  Three months was the longest Ketch had been celibate since losing his virginity.  It might be nice to find some release.  

Of course his mind wet to Amy and who she may have fucked over the past three months.  A rage ignited inside him at the idea of anyone touching her.  He would rip them to shreds with bare hands and make her pay for letting another person near what belonged to him.  Amy was his possession, she may have stole herself away but that did not relinquish his ownership.  Of course any punishment she received would only happen if Ketch could control his anger upon seeing her again.  Sometimes he fantasized about squeezing her beautiful neck until the life vanished from her eyes.  She deserved it for what she was putting him through.

“Are you alright mate?” Mick broke his concentration.

“Let’s get that drink.” Ketch flipped off the computer and stood up to his colleague’s surprise. “Not that pub though. I want to head to the tourist area. One of those clubs has to be open.”  

Mick nodded and turned to leave the room.  Ketch followed behind him.  He would never give up.  She had taken something more important than the book, something Ketch hadn’t meant to hand out to her.  His heart.  The first woman to ever do so, and what did she do with such a precious gift? Destroyed it.  Oh she would pay, one way or another, she would get what was coming to her.  Ketch would never let her get away with such disrespect.

The economy sucked and that meant ending up in a crappy job that had nothing to do with your major.  The plus side of not having a family and living out of motel rooms meant it was easy to pack up and leave.  And so you did, cruising across America until you found another crappy job you got sick of.

You arrived in Denver and took as an assistant manager doing retail.  It was stupid, your first day you knew it would be like every other job you worked the past six months.  You gave it six weeks tops before you left the store.  There was an urge inside you to do something that mattered, but you couldn’t figure out what that was yet  

In your free time you read every Supernatural book you could get your hands on.  There was no Amazon prime available for those bad boys though.  You were right, they were not that popular which meant checking out used book shops, eBay, and the occasional comic book shop.  Of course your newest occupation was right next to one of those and, lucky for you, they were open late.

The bell to the store rang when you pushed open the door.  You made a bee line to the clerk behind the desk.  

“Hi.” You gave him your biggest smile. “Do you carry any Supernatural books?  And not just books about the Supernatural, but a specific series called Supernatural by…”

“Chuck Shurley!”  The man said the name at the same time as you.

“No.” The man examined the fancy binding before opening it up.  “Someone put a lot of time into this.”  

You tapped your fingers on the counter,  not enjoying how long the man held your book for.  In fact you found yourself starring at his hands, unsure how long it had been since he washed them.  That was Arthur’s book.  Nobody else should be touching it.  You went to grab it back, but stopped yourself.  You were sounding like a crazy person.

“Someone took a lot of time to make this.” He looked up and turned the book around towards you. “But these pictures of Sam and Dean are ridiculous.  Sam isn’t that tall.  And they’re hunters, not models.  I’ll still throw you a bone, how about two hundred for it?”

“Excuse me?”  You wouldn’t part with the book for a million.  

“Fine, you called my bluff.  Five hundred.” The man went blank faced.  

“It’s not for sale.”  You shook your head. “I just wanted to know if you had seen a copy before.”

“This isn’t a copy.”  The man leaned forward and flipped to the front. “There’s no source information.”

You had noticed that before.  He flipped to a random page and ran his fingers down.

“This ink is high quality.  Not what would be used on a Supernatural paperback.”  He went to the end. “This stuff about a bunker?  It’s not in the books.  To me, this is high quality fan fiction.”  

He ran his fingertips down the page.  

“And from a quick scan it contains no smut.”  He shut the book and set it on the counter. “A very rare find.  Did you make this?  Because if you want to mass produce this, we can go 50/50. I’ll make copies and distribute through my channels.  We could sell them for a thousand a pop.”

You picked up the book, wanting it out of the man’s grasp.  He tensed and went for it.  

“Like I said, it’s not for sale.”  You put the book back in your bag and clutched it to your side, happy you trusted your initial instinct not to scan the pages and put them online.

You didn’t respond as you kept walking to your car.  His footsteps picked up again and you took off sprinting.  There was enough distance between the two of you for you to dive into your front seat and hit the lock button before he made it to the window.  

“Ten thousand dollars.  I will mortgage my house.”  The man was on the other side of the glass.

You didn’t look at him as you turned over the engine and sped out of the parking lot.  In the rear view window you saw the look of pure frustration on his face.  It shook you to your core.  If he was that frantic about it, that meant one thing.  He was asking himself the same question you were.  Was it real?

The idea had been eating away at you for some time.  To the point you were debating on buying a plane ticket back to England, ready to sit in that damn pub every night until Arthur showed up.  If a credit card company would have approved you you would have by now. Arthur.  Even thinking his name made your heart ache.  

It had been six months since you left England, and not a day went by you weren’t thinking about the man.  Were you too harsh?  Did you not realize what was in front of you, too distracted by logic to open your heart to the possibility that what you had was real?  

The memory of him filling you up, your wrists in his hand as he rocked inside of you.  So many nights you had tried to find him online.  Even making a Facebook page with a whopping 23 friends.  All you had to go on was Arthur in London.  How could you not think to ask his last name?  Imagining the primal look in his eyes made you moan out loud in your car.  If you didn’t have the resources to get back to him you had to do the next best thing.  

Denver was another bust.  You were going to head back to the motel to grab your stuff, but you wouldn’t be staying the night there.  You were fighting the inevitable.  If you couldn’t get to Arthur to answer your questions you were going to the next best place. Lebanon Kansas.  Maybe the bunker would be there or maybe you would find nothing and get some closure as to whether Arthur’s world was real or not.  

If Sam and Dean Winchester existed maybe they knew how to get in contact with Arthur.  But was that what you wanted?  Arthur back?  His smiling face at the pub your final night in London flashed in front of your eyes.  He was a man of many sides, maybe you had given up on him too soon.

I know this isn’t a fan fiction book, and I normally keep this blog strictly to that genre, but my writer friend, Rose, is not only a fan fiction writer, but she has a few books out there in the world for sale. This is her newest, just released yesterday, Feb. 20th.

Rose was sweet enough to gift me an ARC of this book for my birthday last week, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE this story! It’s not like others I’ve read before, and that’s just one of the things that makes it intriguing to me. Throw in all the twists and turns, and the mystery, and it has me wanting more!! I’m excited for the next book to be released, which is set to be in October 2020.

There are traditional fashion models, and then there’s Leomie Anderson. “All my young girls reading this, know that you don’t have to do anything that you aren’t fully comfortable with, and that your no means something,” she wrote. It wasn’t long before Anderson was invited to speak at schools, meeting young women trying to navigate these murky waters, and hearing that they didn’t know where to turn in these situations. “That’s basically what sparked LAPP,” she tells Refinery29. “ I want to create an open, safe space on the internet for women from all walks of life to be able to share their perspectives.”

Needless to say, building an empire is never without its hurdles. Behind the scenes, there have been long hours, serious hustle, and unexpected shifts in plans. On Anderson’s Twitter page, you’ll find a pinned tweet from June 2019, in which she announced that an ex-investor was withholding her LAPP The Brand stock. “I’m sharing my story because I don’t want anyone else making the same mistakes I did, especially young women who men try and take advantage of in business,” Anderson wrote. 

Setbacks aside, Anderson kept moving forward. The next milestone came last year when Anderson was named one of the newest of Victoria’s Secret Angels, landing one of the most coveted jobs in the business after four consecutive years walking in the show. 

As she tells me about 2020’s big projects over the phone from a London salon — she needs to get her hair and brows done before heading on a last-minute trip to Paris the following day — it’s hard not to be impressed by the scale and breadth of her achievements, but also the cool, assured manner with which she describes the last few years spent carving out her own space in history.

As such, she’s extremely busy. We’d had a tricky day of missed calls while she attended to other commitments before finally pinning down a time chat in the early evening. A couple of days before we speak, Anderson had been living it up in Ghana where (as confirmed by committed Instagram stalking) she’d been hanging out with friend and singer Bree Runway. When she’s finished at the hairdressers, she has to rush home and pack before jetting off in the early hours. Yes, it sounds super stressful, but for the most part, Anderson is unphased, clearly used to juggling the demands of running a business, advocating for change in the fashion industry, securing work as an in-demand model and chatting to excited journalists on the phone.

When she’s not tweeting about the new season of Love Island (last we checked, she’s a fan of friend-zone magnet Nas) Anderson is asking her 35 thousand followers for their thoughts and recommendations. In early January, she put a call out for examples of black women being used as “banter” online. It’s a compliment to an upcoming TED Talk at England’s Warwick University, Anderson explains. “The theme they wanted me to speak about was my experience in the modelling industry and how social media has changed society’s beauty standards.”

“I had to make sure that everyone in the room knew I was coming from the perspective of a black woman and that my experiences have been so shaped and defined by the colour of my skin that it would be impossible to speak about the modelling industry or social media without reminding everybody that these experiences are inflicted upon all black women, not just myself,” she says.

It’s a frustrating but crucial topic that Anderson is well-versed in. The model made headlines in February 2016 when she tweeted about the overwhelming number of makeup artists at London Fashion Week who were ill-equipped to work on dark skin. The following year she shared an infuriating story about being turned away from a model casting, apparently because the designer had already cast one model of colour. “Social media has become a way to protect minorities within creative industries because it allows us to unify, which people don’t want. The way Anderson sees it, people being vocal about not seeing themselves in campaigns and calling out organisations for discriminatory practices is really what’s pushing the brands to do something about it. “And I think the fact that so many people like Naomi Campbell and Iman continue to unify and speak up every season about the lack of diversity seen on the runways. I think a lot of brands and people felt pressure… Off the back of that, I feel that so many more black creatives have been given really poignant roles,” she adds, citing British Vogue’s  Editor in Chief Edward Enniful and Virgil Abloh becoming artistic director at Louis Vuitton. “It’s inspirational and shows people that black does sell because that used to be the excuse they used to stop us being on the cover of magazines.”

Victoria’s Secret has frequently been criticised for its lack of inclusivity. As someone at the forefront of the industry’s conversation about diversity, I ask how Anderson feels about where the lingerie company stands, having now secured a permanent role as an Angel. I was just saying what’s on my mind. But I realised that it was just important. It didn’t feel like pressure, especially not in the beginning because I felt silenced for so long and I felt the silence wasn’t helping anybody in the [same] situation. The silence wasn’t making my job easier for myself. I was still crying in the toilets and I was still experiencing [the] ignorance of racism.”

In short, it sucked. Not speaking meant that more young models were going to go through the same experiences and Anderson is doing what she can to make sure that doesn’t happen. Anderson explains that she does adamantly enjoy, to use her words, “being able to use my platform for something other than posting pictures of myself.” Speaking out means that she can make an impact for women, not just in fashion but across many different industries, who are undoubtedly experiencing similar issues.

Coconut Whisk Baking Co.: Since Myles and I are equal partners in this, the challenge that we both continue to face is creating barriers around our work and personal life. I’ve heard the positive concept of work/life integration (incorporating both so that you don’t feel guilty when one is out of balance), but we still do our best to not allow our business to consume everything! We might make it look easy but there’s a lot of work behind the scenes that we don’t talk about. We are still figuring our roles and how to ensure that our relationship thrives from this business and not crumble from it. But overall, it’s been something that is putting so much passion and energy into our relationship and that’s something that I’m really grateful for. 

 Q: What are your biggest accomplishments with your business thus far?

Coconut Whisk Baking Co.: It was really cool to win 1st place at the Big Ideas Challenge in the Ag/Food/Bev category and winning overall favorite company in the Youth Entrepreneurship Fair at MSU- Mankato. But truthfully, I am most proud of our ability to bring the vision for Coconut Whisk to life. Seeing an idea that I had turn into reality and then received well by our community has been THE most rewarding accomplishment. 

 Q: How do you think you impact others with your business?

Coconut Whisk Baking Co.: Ahhh. I might have to humble brag for this answer. So here goes nothing. 

I think I impact others by showing them that you can literally do whatever you set your heart and intentions on. 

I don’t have culinary baking experience. I don’t have a business degree. I’m a 22 year old gal who believes in her big dreams. 

That’s it. So if my story inspires someone else to chase their big ideas. That’s all the impact that I need to make with this business. 

Also, contributing to the animal sanctuaries that we pledge is how our business also makes an impact on the community. 

 Q: In general, how do you think small businesses impact individuals and society?

Coconut Whisk Baking Co.: Humans are community centered. At the heart of everything is an entrepreneurial individual who create something out of nothing so that they can share it with their tribe. 

Small businesses are all about people and that is what society is all about. Connecting with people and building something magnificent, together. 

 Q: Do you think shopping in or with small businesses is becoming more of a trend? Why or why not?

Coconut Whisk Baking Co.: Oh yes! I think that more and more people are becoming more conscious and aware of where their products come from. Why support the faceless big brands, when you can support local and have the community that comes along with it?

It’s a no-brainer!

 Q: Why do you think it is important for individuals to shop small businesses?

Coconut Whisk Baking Co.: I have a conversation the other day with a mentor and he told me the reasons why he buys all his supplies locally is that with by buying from local, you are supporting a family directly. 

You are part of their story. You have their backs and they’ll have yours. There’s no better deal than that. 

 Q: Overall, if you had any advice for upcoming entrepreneurs about starting their own business, what would it be? 

Coconut Whisk Baking Co.: If it feels right. If you get that tingly feeling in your body at the sheer thought of the idea. Say “YES” and move forward with it. Write out big goals then break it down into actionable steps. There’s people out there who are willing and ready to help you. It starts with you first though so take that leap of faith and chase your dreams, my friend.

Smackdown Content Marketing Secrets From the WWE

My colleague and I first noticed the pattern a year and a half ago. Every day, almost without fail, an article from WWE, with its sweat-soaked professional wrestlers in various poses, would hit the trending chart created from our BuzzSumo data.

To appear on the trending content chart, the content must have been shared very quickly. It’s prime real estate for viral content.

Neither of us is a professional wrestling fan, so we noted the phenomenon and moved on. But, WWE.com content continued to trend, and I decided to dig into the share data for sports and entertainment content.

I discovered that WWE is the legit boss of the sports entertainment content marketing arena, no matter who is in the ring. WWE.com has:

More average and median shares than the NFL, MLB, UFC, and other sports leagues

More pins on Pinterest than the NFL

More average shares than sports broadcast network ESPN.com

More average shares than content about Game of Thrones

As famed wrestler (and Hefty trash bag spokesman) John Cena might say, WWE content marketing has earned respect.

To determine the tactic types contributing to the WWE’s success, I analyzed 482,000 sports and entertainment headlines, and compared the top sports league sites to WWE. (As WWE is a scripted sport, it made sense to evaluate both the sports and entertainment industries. WWE’s corporate site identifies it as an “integrated media organization,” while its Facebook page refers to it as a “sports league.”

Key differentiators WWE uses to encourage phenomenal audience engagement include:

Social share button placement

Masterful storytelling

Female characters

Importance of images

Emotional attachment with fans

Less-is-more content strategy

Content length that works best for WWE

Headline words and phrases that drive shares for WWE

WWE dominates shares

WWE’s content has more shares than huge sports leagues with significant fan bases, more shares than content about HBO powerhouse Game of Thrones, and more shares than ESPN.com, which houses content that appeals to fans of a variety of sports.

During 2016, WWE dominated NFL.com and MLB.com in both average and median shares per post:

In 2017, WWE not only dominated the NFL and MLB, but UFC and ESPN as well.

Compared to a purely entertainment segment, WWE also performed incredibly well. During 2016, WWE’s average and median shares were 6,447 and 68 respectively – 17 times and 11 times greater than content about Game of Thrones, which had an average of 380 shares and a median of six. 

WWE commands Pinterest

One thing that intrigued me was the level of engagement with WWE content on Pinterest.

During 2016, WWE.com racked up 57,749 pins, an average of 3.4 per article; NFL.com had 4,604 total pins. The average number of pins for content about Game of Thrones in 2016 was 2.88, and during the first six months of 2017, ESPN.com had an average of 0.18 pins per article.

I asked Alisa Meredith, content marketing manager for Tailwind and a Pinterest marketing specialist, to compare the Pinterest presence of both WWE and the NFL.

The NFL feed is dominated by product photos, Alisa points out. But when you look at the NFL content that fans have pinned, the top pins are game recap videos and an article about New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bündchen.

So, there’s a disconnect between what people are pinning from NFL and what the NFL shares. Pinners are interested in human-interest stories, news, and the individuals involved in the game. But that isn’t what the NFL pins on its boards.

In what could be described as the missed Pinterest opportunity of the century, the NFL has the rights to use the term “Super Bowl,” but it doesn’t have Pinterest boards for things like Super Bowl party planning, decor, snacks, desserts, drinks, etc., a natural fit for the Pinterest audience. This deficit is a huge missed opportunity for traffic from Pinterest, and from Google, which indexes pins and boards, Alisa says.

The top WWE pins were for women wrestlers in bikinis, but those pics don’t fully account for the shares of content from wwe.com. Instead, Alisa says, a lot of boards are created by women and named for WWE characters, both male and female.

“It appears the emotional attachment to the sport and its athletes is strong,” Alisa concludes.

I would argue that the WWE actively courts emotional attachment, giving their fans articles that not only describe what happened in a wrestling matchup, but also how the wrestlers felt about it, what motivated them, and how they reacted to the situation.

The top shares to Pinterest from WWE almost invariably include the word “photo” in the title, which is not the case with the content most shared to Facebook. “People on Pinterest are absolutely in the mood for browsing lots of photos,” Alisa says. “They’re happy to click through to your site to see more – if they know they’ll be good.”

WWE lesson: Craft headlines that draw shares

When I realized how well WWE’s content performed, I dug a little deeper looking for clues to the content formula. The most-shared headlines from WWE have three key themes: 

Driven by personality

Keep fans informed about events and storylines

Promise exclusive access to information

Superstars like John Cena, the Undertaker, Seth Rollins, Alexa Bliss, and the Bella Twins dominate the most-shared content for the WWE.

The site is also the go-to source for content about the WWE. To keep track of a favorite wrestler’s activities online, fans must follow WWE. The site provides updates on league events, as evidenced by terminology like “moments,” “highlights,” and “clips,” as well as in content that summarizes what happened on a day, month, or year.

WWE also promises exclusive content. The word “exclusive” occurs frequently in the most-shared headlines. The images on the site also position WWE.com as a unique media outlet. Even fans who attend a WWE event are unlikely to get the up-close-and-personal look at wrestlers that WWE.com provides in its content.

You can apply the successful WWE themes to your own content marketing program:

Develop a network of influencers who can amplify your content.

Pay attention to the personalities (and topics) your audience is interested in. Look for ways to feature them in your content.

Be the first, the best, and the most reliable source for news about your subject area.

WWE lesson: Make sharing appealing and easy

Like the other networks I reviewed, WWE’s front page is an index of its newest content. What makes WWE stand out is the share button beside the index listing, and the consistent use of images – at least one per article.

In other words, WWE encourages site visitors to share based on headline and image alone – before they even see the article.

MLB.com and NFL.com don’t include share buttons for their content on the index page. ESPN.com includes share buttons under some of the video content on its home page but not for all articles. These networks also include text-only listings for content on their home pages.

WWE’s share-button placement is unique even outside the world of sports and entertainment. Content marketing industry sites such as Content Marketing Institute and Social Media Examiner, Neil Patel, and Top Rank Blog don’t include share buttons on their index pages.

Share buttons on the WWE home page are mobile friendly. If I am logged on to WWE.com on my phone, I don’t have to click through to the article to share it. I can appreciate the title and image, and share the content with a minimum number of clicks.

WWE’s mobile version also includes an image for each piece of content on its home page, making the site and articles much more visually appealing. MLB, NFL, and ESPN don’t do this. Mobile readers would need to click on a text-only link and wait for the page to load to share content or view the image of a piece of content.

WWE lesson: Write long-form content

Earlier research has consistently shown that long-form content is more heavily shared than short content. I confess to a biased preconception that WWE and other sports sites would be an exception.

They aren’t. Across the board, content longer than 1,000 words got more shares than shorter content. This chart displays average shares by article length in 2016 for WWE, NFL, and MLB.

The preference for sharing longer-form content continues in 2017. ESPN and UFC’s 2017 content followed the same pattern. Long-form posts also got markedly more median shares. Interestingly, all the sites that I looked at produce much more short-form content than long-form.

It’s not clear if a steady diet of long-form content would lead to reduced shares of longer posts. It’s possible that scarcity makes longer posts more valuable.

But, based on this look at WWE and other research, long-form content should be a regular part of content marketers’ tool kits.

WWE lesson: Experiment before committing to video content

I was surprised video content did not, with the exception of ESPN, perform better than non-video content on the sports sites.

The content marketing world seems especially enamored with video content. In June 2017, HubSpot reported that demand for video content is “growing at an impressively rapid pace,” and that “51.9% of marketing professionals worldwide name video as the type of content with the best ROI.”

Of course, there are many types of ROI, but in evaluating number of shares, the sports sites do not generate as many shares for their video content as they do for other content.

More research is needed to see whether video preference is more context-specific before a generalization can be made.

WWE lesson: Think less is more

WWE publishes far less content than the sites I compared it to. The data does not tell if the fact that it has less content produces more shares, but it is worth noting that, for some audiences, less-frequent but higher-quality content can produce as many or more shares than more prolific sites in the same industry.

WWE has theater and storylines built into their events. The content published at WWE.com takes full advantage of this. The site not only tells the story of the competitions by reporting on winners and losers, it also tells the backstory.

Theater aside, the site has a more consistently personal feel than the other sports sites I looked at. It invites the audience to connect with WWE wrestlers on a deeper level.

For example, on a recent visit to WWE.com, the top headline was “Jeff Hardy reveals the meaning behind his most personal tattoo.” Another read, “Hideo Itami reveals why he attacked Kassius Ohno.” And, “Nakamura reacts to the announcement of his dream match with Cena.”

WWE.com is full of reactions and revelations, meaning, and aspiration. It has all the feels.

By telling its audience how the participants in its events felt and how they think, WWE invites the audience to share the emotional experience.

People like to feel connected to the stars who entertain them. They like being “in the know” about actors, actresses, and sports figures. WWE makes this easy.

WWE.com has male and female superstars. This gender mix allows the network to tell different, more complex stories. MLB and NFL are male-participant sports, which limits their ability to broaden the leagues’ narrative range.

With ESPN.com the situation is a little less clear. Female professional athletes aren’t heavily featured on the ESPN site. This could be simply because women’s professional sports aren’t as popular as men’s. It could be a missed opportunity to increase social shares.

Content marketers need to keep an eye on the characters and points of view they use to tell brand stories. My guess is that variety will help to attract a larger audience.

My interest in WWE’s content marketing began with curiosity as I realized how consistently the site’s content trends. But, my interest has grown into admiration for all the components the network consistently applies:

High-quality, engaging images

Superb storytelling

I would argue that the WWE actively courts emotional attachment, giving their fans articles that not only describe what happened in a wrestling matchup, but also how the wrestlers felt about it, what motivated them, and how they reacted to the situation.

The top shares to Pinterest from WWE almost invariably include the word “photo” in the title, which is not the case with the content most shared to Facebook. “People on Pinterest are absolutely in the mood for browsing lots of photos,” Alisa says. “They’re happy to click through to your site to see more – if they know they’ll be good.”

WWE lesson: Craft headlines that draw shares

When I realized how well WWE’s content performed, I dug a little deeper looking for clues to the content formula. The most-shared headlines from WWE have three key themes: 

Driven by personality

Keep fans informed about events and storylines

Promise exclusive access to information

Superstars like John Cena, the Undertaker, Seth Rollins, Alexa Bliss, and the Bella Twins dominate the most-shared content for the WWE.

The site is also the go-to source for content about the WWE. To keep track of a favorite wrestler’s activities online, fans must follow WWE. The site provides updates on league events, as evidenced by terminology like “moments,” “highlights,” and “clips,” as well as in content that summarizes what happened on a day, month, or year.

WWE also promises exclusive content. The word “exclusive” occurs frequently in the most-shared headlines. The images on the site also position WWE.com as a unique media outlet. Even fans who attend a WWE event are unlikely to get the up-close-and-personal look at wrestlers that WWE.com provides in its content.

You can apply the successful WWE themes to your own content marketing program:

Develop a network of influencers who can amplify your content.

Pay attention to the personalities (and topics) your audience is interested in. Look for ways to feature them in your content.

Be the first, the best, and the most reliable source for news about your subject area.

WWE lesson: Make sharing appealing and easy

Like the other networks I reviewed, WWE’s front page is an index of its newest content. What makes WWE stand out is the share button beside the index listing, and the consistent use of images – at least one per article.

In other words, WWE encourages site visitors to share based on headline and image alone – before they even see the article.

MLB.com and NFL.com don’t include share buttons for their content on the index page. ESPN.com includes share buttons under some of the video content on its home page but not for all articles. These networks also include text-only listings for content on their home pages.

WWE’s share-button placement is unique even outside the world of sports and entertainment. Content marketing industry sites such as Content Marketing Institute and Social Media Examiner, Neil Patel, and Top Rank Blog don’t include share buttons on their index pages.

Share buttons on the WWE home page are mobile friendly. If I am logged on to WWE.com on my phone, I don’t have to click through to the article to share it. I can appreciate the title and image, and share the content with a minimum number of clicks.

WWE’s mobile version also includes an image for each piece of content on its home page, making the site and articles much more visually appealing. MLB, NFL, and ESPN don’t do this. Mobile readers would need to click on a text-only link and wait for the page to load to share content or view the image of a piece of content.

WWE lesson: Write long-form content

Earlier research has consistently shown that long-form content is more heavily shared than short content. I confess to a biased preconception that WWE and other sports sites would be an exception.

They aren’t. Across the board, content longer than 1,000 words got more shares than shorter content. This chart displays average shares by article length in 2016 for WWE, NFL, and MLB.

The preference for sharing longer-form content continues in 2017. ESPN and UFC’s 2017 content followed the same pattern. Long-form posts also got markedly more median shares. Interestingly, all the sites that I looked at produce much more short-form content than long-form.

It’s not clear if a steady diet of long-form content would lead to reduced shares of longer posts. It’s possible that scarcity makes longer posts more valuable.

But, based on this look at WWE and other research, long-form content should be a regular part of content marketers’ tool kits.

WWE lesson: Experiment before committing to video content

I was surprised video content did not, with the exception of ESPN, perform better than non-video content on the sports sites.

The content marketing world seems especially enamored with video content. In June 2017, HubSpot reported that demand for video content is “growing at an impressively rapid pace,” and that “51.9% of marketing professionals worldwide name video as the type of content with the best ROI.”

Of course, there are many types of ROI, but in evaluating number of shares, the sports sites do not generate as many shares for their video content as they do for other content.

More research is needed to see whether video preference is more context-specific before a generalization can be made.

WWE lesson: Think less is more

WWE publishes far less content than the sites I compared it to. The data does not tell if the fact that it has less content produces more shares, but it is worth noting that, for some audiences, less-frequent but higher-quality content can produce as many or more shares than more prolific sites in the same industry.

WWE has theater and storylines built into their events. The content published at WWE.com takes full advantage of this. The site not only tells the story of the competitions by reporting on winners and losers, it also tells the backstory.

Theater aside, the site has a more consistently personal feel than the other sports sites I looked at. It invites the audience to connect with WWE wrestlers on a deeper level.

For example, on a recent visit to WWE.com, the top headline was “Jeff Hardy reveals the meaning behind his most personal tattoo.” Another read, “Hideo Itami reveals why he attacked Kassius Ohno.” And, “Nakamura reacts to the announcement of his dream match with Cena.”

WWE.com is full of reactions and revelations, meaning, and aspiration. It has all the feels.

By telling its audience how the participants in its events felt and how they think, WWE invites the audience to share the emotional experience.

People like to feel connected to the stars who entertain them. They like being “in the know” about actors, actresses, and sports figures. WWE makes this easy.

WWE lesson: Broaden your character base

WWE.com has male and female superstars. This gender mix allows the network to tell different, more complex stories. MLB and NFL are male-participant sports, which limits their ability to broaden the leagues’ narrative range.

With ESPN.com the situation is a little less clear. Female professional athletes aren’t heavily featured on the ESPN site. This could be simply because women’s professional sports aren’t as popular as men’s. It could be a missed opportunity to increase social shares.

Content marketers need to keep an eye on the characters and points of view they use to tell brand stories. My guess is that variety will help to attract a larger audience.

Conclusion

My interest in WWE’s content marketing began with curiosity as I realized how consistently the site’s content trends. But, my interest has grown into admiration for all the components the network consistently applies:

High-quality, engaging images

Emotional connection with fans

Superb storytelling

Wide range of characters

Ingenious social share-button placement

It's August Soul Mate Tree Time!

The August release in the Soul Mate Tree collection is available today. Once Upon an Lady is a regency historical by Addie Jo Ryleigh, so we'll hand this blog over to her. 

 My new release, Once Upon a Lady, is book eight of The Soul Mate Tree Series and I couldn’t be prouder to share in a venture that showcases the talents of so many amazing romance authors across a variety of genres. When I was first approached by Char Chaffin asking if I’d be interested in joining the project, my first thought was ‘I’ve never written a novella before.’ **gulp** After convincing myself that I could indeed capture an entire story in the length of a novella, I jumped on board. Taking a break from my debut Regency series, Men of Circumstance, I started to toss around ideas and quickly stumbled upon Kate and Jackson.

Kate felt his approach before she saw him. Which wasn’t all that surprising since her body had remained mindful of his presence. Fighting the impulse proved fruitless.

When his tall frame blocked the sun and cast her in shadow, she knew besides giving him a direct cut, she had no escape. If only she hadn’t ventured from her sister’s side. At the time, abandoning Helena had been her singular option since their slow stroll through the gathering had traveled too close to the very man standing beside her. She’d been delaying the inevitable.

Kate was now alone, as she tried to keep her attention on the lawn activities before her, hoping no one would witness what was about to happen.

“Aren’t sprites confined to the trees?” His deep voice washed over her.

She didn’t turn to acknowledge him. “How nice to see you properly dressed for once.”

His chuckle warmed her. “Are you following me?”

An unladylike snort refused to be repressed. “Hardly. You are rather difficult to overlook, being the only unknown face here.”

“That’s not true. You’ve seen my face . . . as well as other, more interesting parts.”

Kate wished she’d listened to her sister and worn a bonnet. Anything to mask the heat flaring in her cheeks.

Thankfully he remained at her side and hadn’t a clear view of her face. “We have not been introduced. I can’t be seen speaking to you.”

“Then let us go where we can't be seen.”

Her heart raced at his boldness. Why was this man so tempting? She was spoken for, though still unofficially. Proper ladies didn’t follow strange men to private locations, regardless of their marital status. “Absolutely not.”

“Even if I have something of yours?”

Blast! Her ring. Given her luck lately, she would have lost it in the grove of all places. Her aunt would toss in her grave knowing Kate had misplaced her gift.

“A true gentleman would return it.”

His deep laugh caused her pulse to flutter. “I'm no gentleman. Or haven't you heard?”
