Emerging Practices
EDIT: This paper is NOT purely a theory paper and will include hands-on work. I have since revisited my analysis of this paper so stay tuned for more!
Since our initial introduction to the Emerging Practices paper, I have quickly realised that this paper is extremely different from what I was anticipating. The paper is centered around up and coming practices in the industry of social robotics. The paper is entirely theoretical and based around investigation, therefore, I need to understand exactly what emerging practices are and how they relate to social robotics.
Emergent change is change that follows no big upfront plan. For example, the Internet largely emerged without much of a central plan as the result of networks connecting to networks in an open way that followed a minimum set of shared standards. Emergent change occurs both naturally and as a strategy of continuous delivery designed to be responsive to business needs and strategic conditions (Spacey, 2016).
Planned change is the practice of creating and implementing long term strategies with a planned architecture and design, (Spacey, 2016).
I really like this diagram that Ricardo showed us about the design process. Projects pivot, change and develop and I believe that many emerging practices come out of times of confusion and conflict rather than from a perfectly planned, straight line.
A social robot is an autonomous robot that interacts and communicates with humans or other autonomous physical agents by following social behaviors and rules attached to its role. Like other robots, a social robot is physically embodied (avatars or on-screen synthetic social characters are not embodied and thus distinct). Some synthetic social agents are designed with a screen to represent the head or 'face' to dynamically communicate with users. In these cases, the status as a social robot depends on the form of the 'body' of the social agent; if the body has and uses some physical motors and sensor abilities, then the system could be considered a robot (”Social Robotics”, 2018).
This is going to be a challenging paper as ‘social robotics’ (autonomous robots that communicate with people) have not been a very big interest of mine in the past. I feel oblivious to the realities around artificially intelligent robots and I hope to discover more clarity over the course of this paper.

Emerging Practises Post 1
What is the theme of this paper? (Emerging Practises) To discover this I investigated the meaning of the word ‘emerging’. After a few google searches I came to understand the word emerging to mean “Just beginning to exist or be noticed”. After just the first class I have come to an understanding that we will be investigating emerging technologies surrounding the topic of ‘Social Robots’ and how they will be apparent and prominent.
What is a social Robot?
C-3PO from Star Wars was the first though which came to mind

This is a difficult question to answer, as I learnt in class that many manmade objects which we use every day can be classified as a robot. Ricardo put it in broad terms that a robot is basically something with a sensor and which communicates in some fashion e.g. information.
A quick Wikipedia search of What is a social robot gave me this information.
A social robot is an autonomous robot that interacts and communicates with humans or other autonomous physical agents by following social behaviours and rules attached to its role. Like other robots, a social robot is physically embodied (avatars or on-screen synthetic social characters are not embodied and thus distinct). Some synthetic social agents are designed with a screen to represent the head or 'face' to dynamically communicate with users. In these cases, the status as a social robot depends on the form of the 'body' of the social agent; if the body has and uses some physical motors and sensor abilities, then the system could be considered a robot.
Brooks essay
Brooks’ essay begins with a short history of his experience with robots, including his experience with space exploration and disaster situations such as the devastating 2011 Japan earthquake. Brooks talks of how essential robots were and are in the continuing clean-up of the Fukushima nuclear power plant and surrounding area. A mixture of manually controlled robots as well as robots bearing AI operating systems were sent in. The AI robots had the ability to build maps, plan optimal paths, right themselves should they tumble down a slope, and to retrace their path when they lost contact with their human operators.
Brooks talks of how the publics view of what robots could then currently achieve, had been skewed by corporates false marketing of their robots and their abilities which were actually tightly controlled by many people at a time when on show to the public. They made them look ‘sexy’, which meant they were no use In the case of a disaster such as fukushima.
The average person holds unattainable expectations of what an AI robot can achieve. In reality AI robots need to be treated somewhat like children as they need human guidance in filling in the blanks of what they yet cannot comprehend.
