More warmup painting exercises with acrylic inks, featuring some gen 2 fire types. Magby is just such a cute little goober, and I wanted to have some fun with adding lava textures to Magcargo and Slugma. It's still a tricky substance to paint but I think I'm getting there!

what is the weirdest enrichment you do thats normal for the pokemon? i have a dreepy who likes to launch herself out of a modified tennis launcher. worst thing that happened is that she phased through a few house

Mud rolling for phanphy that never got that opportunity. As in, theyre nervous around their own species because of isolation, and so YOU THE PROFESSOR have to get in the mud and teach them how to phanphy. Messy but fun, no one else likes to do it weirdly, I always rather enjoyed it.

furret tube enrichment. Grey sets up a bunch of pipes all connected in weird and wild ways like a janky jungle gym, we put small treats in there, and tie "prey" ie, toys, to strings and pull them at speed through the maze to get the furrets to chase and learn that behaviour if they never got to prior.

Murkrow are VERY smart, and we have a lot of them, so theres regular scavenger hunts (with a few rules to save guests grief) that we hold for them specifically. everyone gets participation rewards, but also its a great chance for them to sharpen their problem solving skills individually and as a group.

Tug of war with guests. we got this set up that lets the bigger mons hold one end, and visitors or other pokemon are encouraged to engage with the game and try to out pull the island residents. sometimes the little pokemon all join in, but we originally set it up for the bigger ones.

Theres a couple of Tauros and girafarig that like to roll own hills with the wooloo and odd mareep, we've set up sturdier wire nets for this now the heavy mons like to partake too, to catch them all safely so they can run back up and do it again. You can imagine the chaos we had when they started doing this and didnt have that net in place, mons rolling too far towards sea cliffs.

Slugma races. This needs no explination. The staff love this one.

Movie nights, sport teams, dance sessions, story time, arts and crafts, and even band practice are clubs we hold, be it a professor or another group of staff, and many mons can come and go as they see fit, theyre all optional but we try to encourage each resident to find the thing that makes them tick, and so trying out a bunch of things is there for all. Some may not like team sport with the staff so I also offer just gym time, a personal best system in place more than a group effort and score.

It really varies from one to the next. some big mons like dainty hobbies, some of the little ones are brawlers, and everything in between. We just have to cater to it!

A nice example is a Hitmonchan that came in a while back missing a leg, they fight with me and others in the gym of course, but they also partake in a tea and stories night, a couple dozen pokemon, a few staff all cosying up in one of the event barns with readings from books, and plenty of snacks. its a firm favorite as autumn creeps in, numbers spike.

Pokemon can be complex, so offering lots is alwasy the best choice when you can, never know what they'll like until they try it!

Who is “Floor Blob”, “Tiny Floor”?

The Floor when he was just born, and/or a baby was only just a blob of lava. He had that Goo look, but was different if you look carefully. (e.g. has small hands hidden under the water, slugma inspiration than goomy, stream of lava followed him while he crawled, cannot shapeshift/multiply into more floors)

His parents are The Ocean, and Volcano… like the literal ocean and a volcano- ok maybe not a literal volcano, but I’ll get there-

The Ocean is The Floors mom. Wherever you see ocean water, The Ocean resides; the world is The Ocean’s oyster. Her hair flows with the waves, collecting many shells as she explores the many waters. Though she can be anywhere, and everywhere, The Ocean prefers tropical climates. Objects on volcano’s island worship her greatly, even if interactions with her and objectkind are very few and far between. (she/her pronouns)

Volcano is The Floor’s dad. He is an active volcano… but he doesn’t mean any harm! He’s only a gentle giant. Fun fact, did you know he isn’t actually the volcano? He’s like his son and can move his face around the volcano part and back into his actual form; the lava! His sister is the object who causes eruptions around the island… she isn’t active anymore.

Volcano is a chatterbox! He is the first object that The Ocean met. One day, the Ocean was drifting by herself across the seas, there she stumbled across Volcano, drifting across his streams of lava, amen he took notice of her. There the two began to hit it off. He was nice to her not just because of who she was, but it was who HE was. They continued to meet up with each other, months, years, a millennium even, until the two gods fall in love for one another. (he/him pronouns)

King Flint: As for stories about my little girl, I have many! The time she got her head stuck in a bush, the time she almost fell into the volcano, that time she almost lost a race to a slugma. The tales I have about my little chic are endless.

King Flint: But the embarrassing ones make you, well, you. They're just as important as your successes. Every part of your life develops you into the Pokémon you are today.

Hope: Please spare me the embarrassment.

King Flint: Alright, alright.

King Flint: Oh? Coward, am I? Need I remind you that I'm in an alliance with your family? Or should I tell everyone here about the shower incident? The evolution party? The talent show? What about the-

King Flint: Let me tell you all about the moment I was most proud of her. It was when she first learned how to write. Now, you can probably see that Hope is one to struggle with certain things due to her lack of arms. To be honest, I never thought it'd be possible. She had to use a scribe for a lot of her younger schooling. You found it frustrating having to have someone write down absolutely everything. One day, she'd had enough. She spent time and effort writing and writing and writing, finding new and more comfortable ways to do it. There were many times you gave up, weren't there?

Hope: Kinda hard to write when you're so behind all of your peers and nobody knew what to do with you.

King Flint: Pretty much. I was told by many of her teachers that she probably would never be able to develop the skill. Legs and feet just aren't designed to do that. She persevered though. I think you were about, what, 12 when you wrote me my first father's day card all by yourself. I couldn't help but cry.

Hope: Cry? You were bawling your eyes out!

King Flint: Hahaha! I suppose I was! I was just proud my little girl had achieved something that no one else thought possible. Sure, your spelling is a bit wonky at times, but I'm still so proud of the progress you've made. Of course, you've still needed your scribe sometimes and we've had to make a lot of adaptations to make things easier for you, but I'm still so proud of how far you've come.

*Destino listened to the kind words Hope's dad said about her. Had they ever received any meaningful praise from their parents? Their dad was one that barely spoke at the best of times. When he did want to talk to them, it was usually about royal duties and doing what's right for the kingdom. Their mother babied them every second she saw them but there was never a time Destino had ever heard anything about how proud they were of them. Was the absol envious of what they were seeing? Maybe a little. What would life have been like if their parents were more supportive of them or even just there for them? For half of their childhood, Destino was mainly raised by the two Bisharps, Roy and Hershel. It was only when they were 10 that their parents decided to take some responsibility for raising them.

Their face turned to a small frown for a second before they quickly corrected themselves. They couldn't show this simple story affected them. Destino wouldn't show any emotions that would make it seem like they weren't in control of themselves and their emotions. Not again. These Pokémon had already seen enough.*

King Flint: Were you born like that?

*Destino moves in between the King and Rimi, looking at him*

Destino: You mean to tell me Rimbo over here is not supposed to look like that?

King Flint: Well, she certainly ain't like any lycanrocs here.

Destino: Wow, I knew you were weird, Rimbo, but this is on a whole nother level. I just assumed this is what your species looked like. No, turns out you're just some oddball. Couldn't be me. Thank goodness.

Hope: Is there anything wrong with Pokémon who are born looking different?

Destino: Of course not. I definitely don't look like your average Absol. In fact, I'm far better than the average. Flawless even. Definitely better than all of you. Guess I was just born perfect.

*Hope, breathing out a sigh of frustration, gives a small kick to Destino's legs. The absol lets out a little scream.*

Destino: How dare you?!

Hope: Oh, I'm sorry. Your incessant voice is just so unpleasant to my ears. I had to put an end to that. Nice scream by the way. Can't wait for that in the training grounds.

King Flint: Hey hey, now let's stop all that. No need to be fighting here. Save it for a more appropriate time. Hope, you know better. And Prime Destino, perhaps you should hold your tongue for now. You're funny but I don't wanna have anything start whilst I'm here, alright?

so since people have been asking a lot about which pokemon make good pets, how about which pokemon would make the worst pets?

it would be hard to pick the worst from every pokemon out there, but here are some general ideas:

any form of a so-called "pseudo-legendary" line. these pokemon often require specialized care, and if they evolve, they can become dangerous (if they weren't already)

any pokemon recognized by behaviorists to have naturally aggressive behavior (eg gyarados, sharpedo, tauros). these pokemon are hard to raise well, with some pretty bad consequences if trained improperly

pokemon with extremely specific environmental care needs (eg slugma, certain aquatic pokemon, several ice types). it's just super hard to provide a safe, comfortable environment for these guys, and unless you're an expert in their care and have the means to give them what they need, they're probably going to get sick. sometimes it can also be dangerous for you (how are you going to keep a slugma from burning down your house, for example)

that's just a few examples of kinds of pokemon that make bad pets, but it's always important to research and determine what pokemon best fits your lifestyle and ability to provide proper care!

Professor Oak's Challenge Update!

Hooookay, big update post time!

I mentioned in a previous post that I've been chipping away at a Prof. Oak's Challenge in Heart Gold!

As of the time of writing I'm just starting part 4 according to Mewlax's guide on the run. This post is only about the first part, i.e before Falkner! I'll post about the next parts when I'm done with part 4, something I expect to happen soon.

Now, let's begin.

I deleted my old save and named myself Prof. H! I took Totodile as my starter as it's a Johto fave of mine and I set off into the Johto region to catch 'em all!

I Made my way to Mr. Pokemon's house for the egg that begins the game's plot and along the way I bumped into my rival, a red-haired boy named Thesis, as I'm writing my honour's thesis while I play and I expect I'll still be chipping away at this file by the time I'm done with my thesis.

My experience with Part 1, pre-Falkner was interesting. trainer battles are incredibly poor for experience yield and as per Mewlax's recommendation I completely abstained from taking any numbers for potential rematches. So I found myself alternating between the pokemon on Route 32, with Bellsprout being the best, and the Gastly at Sprout tower at night!

I spent my morning and afternoon commutes to and from work, which currently has its facilities about an hour away from my home so I got plenty of time to play each day.

I took the optional Slugma which added another big level grind to this part of the challenge but by the time I got into the rhthym of swinging back and forth between grinding spots it went pretty quickly!

The time soon came for me to battle Falkner sneakily at work instead of doing my job! Here's how it went!

4. Are there any pokémon that live in your area that scare you / squick you out?

uh. i've said before i really don't want to run into any big predators out in the wild. so, to that end, stuff like salamence, serperior, and those fantail sceptiles are out. feraligatr. you know. stuff like that

6. Are there any pokémon that, upon first learning of them, you almost didn’t believe were real creatures?

so, this might sound silly, but i really didn't think slugma was a real thing. "but you're from johto and they have them in kanto" i know i know, i said it was silly. what i don't know about what happens in cinnabar can't hurt me or something. anyway, i didn't actually get to see one until i moved here. they're neat little guys

15. Do you catch a lot of pokémon, battle them, or just leave them be?

um, not really? i only have four pokémon and no resources to take care of any more, and that's with one of them being really self-sufficient. if i'm catching a pokémon, it's to send it to the professor i work with for study. as for battling, i only really battle pokémon that want to battle. most of the time for training my team battles each other

17. Do you prefer Pokémon Centers to heal up your team, or just a good night’s rest?

yeah, it depends on what's going on with them. if we've just been battling, resting is enough. having a more severe injury is the only reason i'd make a point to have them treated at a pokémon center. mostly i just use pokémon centers for the free food and showers

19. What’s your favorite bonding activity to take part in with your pokémon?

brutus and i usually just chill together. sometimes i'll read to him or just talk. aggron are surprisingly social pokémon and quality time is really good for them. uh, i kind of have this dream where i have my own place with space for a garden that he can help me tend, because aggron are really good at gardening, but, i don't know if that will ever happen. if i'm exploring, he's usually the pokémon i have out with me--aggron are kind of scarily smart and need a lot of mental stimulation, and figuring out stuff like terrain navigation and getting to see new areas is good for him. i need to talk to somebody about letting him pull a car apart to eat it or something. i bet he'd enjoy that.

ivy is a little more energetic and enjoys chasing after things. i have one of those feathery wand cat toys for her that she likes to pounce on. now that she's a sceptile she mostly just bats at it because she's so big. she also likes running after things i throw. i would call it fetch, but she's kind of bad at the "bring it back so may can throw it again" part.

for alluria, we've been working on training for contests, so holding certain poses has been what we've been doing lately. honestly, alluria's pretty simple as far as enrichment goes--as long as she gets to swim frequently and sit in the sun, she's happy. milotic are really patient and chill.

comet enjoys a wide variety of activity! mostly causing problems on purpose. 0/10, world's worst traveling partner.

Pokemon Card of the Day #3008: Magcargo-GX (Lost Thunder)

Magcargo-GX was one of those cards that had a few different options. There was the occasional Energy acceleration help, but in a form that was really unreliable and not really more than a prayer for that last Energy you needed. The damage potential was absurd if you could attach then discard a ton of Energy. The GX attack could even close out a game if you were trying to run the opponent out of cards. All of these things had needs to function well, yet the game seemed to keep giving help for them as sets got released. Magcargo-GX, as a result, took a bit of time to get into the competitive scene but had some spots for once it did.

210 HP was pretty standard for a Stage 1 Pokemon-GX, and was high enough that it would usually be enough to take a hit. In all honesty, this didn't matter much, as Magcargo-GX would likely be in the discard pile or the last thing you used before winning a game on that turn, but in case you wanted it earlier or on its own it was notable. Zacian V could hit it for those Prizes if it wanted to Prize trade, however. The Water Weakness wasn't the worst, though Keldeo-GX did show up sometimes. The Retreat Cost was 3, and while it was exceptionally rare for it to actually matter due to the card's role, it was still something to keep in mind if going for some different strategy.

Crushing Charge was an Ability that let you discard the top card of your deck. If that card was a Fire Energy, you attached it to 1 of your Pokemon instead. The odds of hitting a Fire Energy in most decks was rather low if used on its own, and using the other Magcargo to set a Fire Energy on top of your deck was basically required to get reliable acceleration out of this. Its main job was to get a single Energy for the last turn of the game for a mill deck, generally speaking, though you could make a gimmick deck out of this and a ton of Fire Energy if you wanted. Said gimmick wouldn't likely go too far, however.

Lava Flow was actually useful. The base cost was 2 Fire and a Colorless Energy, and while Crushing Charge wasn't getting you too far, Welder and the later Victini V could certainly help a lot. The attack started at just 50 damage, but you could also discard as many basic Energy from Magcargo-GX as you wanted to deal 50 more damage for each one you did. This could KO anything with enough Energy, though the cost of doing so against Tag Teams was incredibly high. Magcargo-GX, when included in a deck to use this, was almost exclusively tossed into the discard pile to let Mewtwo & Mew-GX access the attack when it absolutely needed to get 3 Prizes off of something while also being able to take attacks from other Pokemon such as Charizard-GX, Reshiram & Charizard-GX, Naganadel-GX, and a wide range of other Pokemon that could take Fire or Psychic Energy when Lava Flow wasn't the best play. This made great use of Magcargo being great in some spots but not so special in others.

Burning Magma GX required a single Fire Energy and, of course, your GX attack for the game. It simply discarded the top 5 cards of your opponent's deck. This was best saved for the end of the game, after you had been stalling the opponent out while using the other Magcargo to find cards you needed to do so. If the opponent had 5 or fewer cards remaining, you could evolve a Slugma to Magcargo-GX, attach a Fire Energy, and use the GX attack to win. That was the only real situation it was used for, but it was a strong play indeed.

Magcargo-GX had 2 directions to take, and both of them required wildly different decks. It was a pretty nice option in both Fire-focused Mewtwo & Mew-GX decks and Magcargo stall decks, and having a single copy in either was standard. Players tended to see Magcargo-GX reasonably often once all the supporting cards for Fire-types were released in Unbroken Bonds as a result, and in both cases it could cause a major turn in the game, though only if timed correctly. It was a rather good card thanks to the options around it.

Name: Meg Cromwell

Meaning of last name - English surname meaning 'crooked stream.'

Birthday: 1st of September

Appearance:

She's the Gila monster, is a species of venomous lizard, It is a heavy, slow-moving reptile, up to 56 centimetres (22 in) long, and it is the venomous lizard, Its venomous close relatives, the four beaded lizards (all former subspecies of Heloderma horridum.) The Gila monster is sluggish in nature.

Gila monsters appear strong in their body structure with a stout snout, massive head, and "little"-appearing eyes, which can be protected by a nictitating membrane.

The scales of the head, back, and tail contain little pearl-shaped bones (osteoderms) similar to those found in the beaded lizards from further south. The scales of the belly are free from osteoderms. The young seem to be in constant shed. Adults have more or less yellow to pink colors on a black surface. Hatchlings have a uniform, simple, and less colorful pattern. This drastically changes within the first 6 months of their lives. Meg has brown eyes, orange patterns on her black body and has a black tongue.

Personality: She's kind, funny, quiet and the other time she can be loud, she's supportive and caring, sometimes she's could get upset easily.

Backstory:

She's grew up hanging with Randall Boggs, they're becoming friends since they're were kids and having dreams to become scarers. They're bonded playing together and chatting with each other. Meg has a big family including her father, mother, her siblings and grandparents.

Got this both times. You guys really like hearing me go on rants about him, huh...?

Now that I'm back in Blueberry and actively in the league club again, I think he needs to pick his stuff up and whatever. Stop feeding The Slugma™ stale chips instead of the designated wood chips.

I don't doubt his battling abilities, nor have I ever said he was a bad battler. I think he just needs to step up to the plate a little more often, that's all. I also jab at him sometimes, but I think people take me too seriously. Whenever I say "I'm the president of a hate club" I promise it's all jokes. Do I dislike him? Yeah. Would I start an ACTUAL hate club? No.

Personality: Kotone in this AU is still very much an uncontrollable force of nature. She still climbs up to high places for the best vantage point, and drops in unexpectedly on other people.

However, the starkest contrast is in how she presents herself to others. She is abrasive, callous, and rude. She's quick to anger, quick to fight, quick to defend the only place she ever called home. Sometimes this energy goes too far when she thinks that someone might be trying to ruin Team Star. Her Magcargo is named Splash Zone for a reason. She and her Pokemon are an explosion that you will be caught up in, like it or not.

Of course she'd never overstep Mela's turf. Mela gave her a place to stay, a home to come back to, and if she says enough is enough, Kotone will back down without hesitation.

Background: In this version of events, shortly after Kotone's sister left for her Pokemon Journey, Kotone was moved to Paldea. She was six years old, and quickly enrolled into Uva Academy due to to her interest in becoming a trainer. Her very first Pokemon was a Shiny Slugma given to her by a family friend before she moved away. She nicknamed it Splash Zone.

Unfortunately for Kotone, she ended up caught in the middle of an ongoing bullying problem within the school. It seemed like every kid who didn't fit into some perceived standard was targeted. And Kotone, for all her enthusiasm, was considered something of a freak by her peers for her "odd" behavior. This went on for years with Kotone's natural personality retreating into herself, that is until a small group started banding together — Team Star. A surprising beacon in an otherwise hellish school. When she saw the way that they dressed, how they carried themselves, it was something of an inspiration to her.

Why should they just roll over and take the abuse?

While by no means the first to join them, she was among the many that followed their lead in standing up for themselves. And then everything went to hell...

Despite how poorly the school handled the situation, Kotone's mother was breathing down her neck to keep going to classes anyway. The pressure was beginning to crack her. The breaking point occurred when she managed to accidentally set the Home Ec room on fire and she was pulled out of class. While waiting for her mother to arrive, Kotone ended up booking it out of the school unable to face anymore lectures or disappointment. She was a fuck up. Always would be. That's how she saw it anyway.

She ran until she found herself at the Schedar Star Base. Mela let her into her crew with little convincing, and Kotone now stays on permanently at the base, unwilling to return home to her family.
