wait okay. puzzling through this out loud, i'm so sorry for the discourseposting yet again. not maintagged, but you're welcome to weigh in here and check my work; math is not my strong suit and this is likely is far from perfect.

so misadv is using the same LLM-based NPC system as Pirates, right? meaning that, regardless of whether or not the system is installed on a server, the cost of training and fine-tuning that LLM is already sunk -- it got paid when it was being made for the first time. and yes, it sucks ass how much power and electricity was drained there, but the point is. whether or not misadv uses those NPCs, that power still gets used on Pirates. so the only cost we're actually looking at is the cost of sending queries, maybe some fine-tuning but likely not as much as the first time the system was made.

let's estimate this super generously -- here's an article i'm using that goes into LLM power usage. there's precious little on cost total when it comes to only sending requests to an already existing model, this article lists 0.1 MWh per million queries, and that's what i'll be going with for the time being.

so: if the players talk to the NPCs a grand total of one million times, they will use 0.1 MWh of energy, or 100 kWh. that's not nothing! that's a pretty high cost, right?

except, uh. hey, how much in kWh does it cost to run a minecraft server 24/7?

well, this is a bit hard to calculate. a lot of the estimates come from, like. people on forums, or on reddit, or similar people self-hosting. couldn't find any info on professional server hosts. but what i've read estimates that keeping a minecraft server up for a month seems to cost about anywhere from 50 to 75 kWh.

in other words: in order to consume the same amount of energy that just keeping the server running would take, the players on misadv would have to send messages to the NPCs a grand total of 500,000 times a month.

if you're still opposed to misadv using LLM-based NPCs on principle, that's fine! if your issue is with the people behind Pirates having created the LLM systems in the first place, sure, be mad about that too, i certainly don't think it's great! if your issue is generally with the popularization and normalization of overall LLM usage, yeah, i get that, it's a fair argument!

but in this specific case using an existing system where the vast majority of energy costs would have already been used no matter if misadv had these NPCs or not, i don't think it's fair to say that continuing to use the pre-existing NPC system from another server is destroying the environment unless you also want to go after, like. every minecraft server host ever.

i post that kind of thing because it's fun for me to pick apart (and yes to make fun of) and i frequently learn something in the process, even if it's just something about the way that the people i disagree with think and what exactly are the differences between my point of view and theirs. it can be something of an exercise, or some sort of whetstone for me to make sure that i both know what my rebuttals to the points in the screenshot are and whether i can articulate them in a way that i think is satisfactory. ideally this is what i would consider an ethical haterism--if i don't like a take i see, i want to be sure that i can say why i don't like it. i consider myself a rather competitive, argumentative person irl, not over petty things (...usually), but in the sense that i like to start/engage in long political debates. sometimes this is a bad thing and the other person gets stressed and starts thinking i'm mad at them when i'm under the impression we're both having a great time.

however--i can't deny that sometimes i do get a cheap adrenaline rush out of arguing online, and sometimes this makes me go overboard with it. this has been true of me historically and still is. sometimes i go too far and say something mean cause i think it's witty and that's not cool. i'm very sorry if i made you uncomfortable with the discourseposting and will try to be mindful of my own motives in the future, and i will tag it in the future with something--does #hall of shame sound good to you? please message me if it would or wouldn't.

Hm, thinking about some stuff in the confessions acc again...Sorry to discoursepost a bit I think there's a difference between "people in fandom having a negative score in reading comprehension" and "people in fandom having a different opinion" and sometimes it's helpful to check yourself just in case your acting like an ass.

I guess it's just going back to my thoughts on how people can act like having the correct opinion on a character or topic means that your smart and everyone else are just dumb and stupid for not getting it and how that can create a really hostile environment for analysis, which sucks I think.

I wonder if this is why I sometimes see people talk about how they think their analysis isn't good enough or how they're only to think surface level...like if analysis really isn't your thing, then it isn't your thing but it also really sucks when people who Do Like it, don't do it or believe their stuff is stupid because they aren't "thinking as much as everyone else."

Which would be an understandable reaction to have if they kept on seeing people get given shit for feeling a different way about a piece of media.

My point is we should really try to Not Be Like Fuuta.
