I recently posted the original cover for Toughest Dungeon, but didn’t know at the time that Steven Crompton and Ken St Andre have a Kickstarter live right now to reprint it and Monsters! Monsters!, the Tunnels & Trolls spin-off that first let players be the monsters as early as 1976 (h/t @lost-carcosa )

Continuing the city theme, this week I am looking at Flying Buffalo’s Citybook series. Launched in 1982 as part of the Catalyst series of toolkit style, system- and setting-agnostic supplements, there are seven or so Citybooks.
The idea here is to, well, give you ideas. And not for making big, bustling cities feel vibrant, but for breathing life into specific locations. At most, in 1982, a fictional business in a fictional city would get a couple paragraphs of details — and that would feel generous! Citybook entries, on the other hand, dedicated several pages to each establishment, its owners, its patrons and its dark and secret history, because there is almost always an adventure hook, even at the fishmonger’s stand (maybe especially there, because PUNS). Some of these places and people are good for a single serving of story, but others are potentially places your players will frequent, their proprietor future friends and allies. It’s nice to have a pub to frequent!
Citybook I, appropriately subtitled “Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker, is a potpourri. It has a little bit of everything, mostly focus on trade and shops, but there’s a jail, a barracks, a cemetery, a mortuary, a news bureau of sorts and a spooky clock tower as well. Plenty of the sort of establishments that A. Make a city feel more lived in and B. A city sourcebook like Lankhmar or City of Splendors just doesn’t have the room to detail — space is at a premium for the buildings that define a city. These could be in any city. And that’s their beauty!
Liz Danforth and Steven Crompton on illustration duties, both acquit themselves well. The cartography is quite nice too. Interestingly, Larry DiTillio (He-Man, Masks of Nyarlathotep) edited the book.

Sunday 23 February 1834: SH:7/ML/E/16/0172
7 50
12 20
Damp small rainy morning and F51° at 9 5 at which hour breakfast and staid talking to Marian & then my father till 10 25 - the former seems quite prepared for Miss W-‘s being here, makes no objection, on the contrary, I could bring no one my father would like better - thinks Miss W- very right to keep the Lidgate land in her own hand that she may have it ready to let with the house – from 10 ½ to 11 10 skimming over last night’s papers with my aunt - wrote 1 page to M- some time with my aunt then read prayers and sermon 2 volume 1 Mr Knight - the handle of anteroom door came off - obliged to send for Charles H- before I could get in - wrote 2 more pages and ends and finished my letter to M- - Had Washington at 5 ½ for an hour – he brought 3 letters for Miss Walker, one with money from the bank – dinner at 6 ¾ and reading till 7 ¾ -
SH:7/ML/E/16/0173
cried over my letter to π- my eyes red when I went down to Washington and the thought of her filled my eyes with tears during dinner  she will of course think the concluding lines a take-leave of all love between us – ‘Shibden Hall Sunday 23 February 1834. I have now, my dearest Mary, two letters to thank you for- I congratulate you on the éclat of your ball – the newspaper paragraph was very proper, many things of [small] desert are trumpeted, and I do not see why you should not have your due’ ......... then sorry for the business of Miss Eliza Lawton and her love-concern and being sent home from school by Miss Connell - should have written immediately had I known what to advise - hope little Mariana will be the gainer - ‘Miss Connell will be doubly kind and careful, and laying sufficient stress upon air and exercise, I am sanguine in the persuasion that all will go well - I always dwell with pleasure on the hope, and belief that Mariana will be a great comfort to you’ - ......... why not take her with them in some their tours? ‘With respect to her, as with respect to those others for whom you are interested, I incessantly hope, and  pray that the happiness of the future may be assured – think not of clouds and shadowiness – I speak from experience when I say, the great step towards being happy is the determination to be so -  I see you are not quite satisfied of the truth of some of my positions - ‘to plunge headlong into we know not what, and then say ‘I will make it answer’, is but the courage of despair, for tho’ you have mind and resolution to do so, it might not be the case with number two’ ....... Take my own quaint statement, and then judge -  I merely say to myself ‘choose right, if you can, if not, let your own exertions make up the difference : and it is confidence in these exertions, not the courage of despair, that makes me brace up every nerve, and say, if I do it (whatever that it may be) I will make it answer - Mary! with mindless schooled and heart like mine, what chance were there of happiness for me? and, if the fair visions of my youth clung round me years too long, I had less time for vain regret, and greater need of vigorous effort. Perhaps (alluding to one particular instance) you dwell upon my saying, had it been yes, I should have been happy - it was no, and I was still happy. From me this was no proof of indifference - it was merely a trait of character. Let me but know my doom, and my own mind (under heaven) will manage it. How often have you heard me mention the conduct of David on the loss of his child! Yet that he loved it, none could doubt. But thank you again and again, my dearest Mary, for all your anxiety about me -  I hope we shall still live to see each other as happy as your gipsy promised you should be, and as happy as I myself or care, or wish to me - I count upon your friendship and esteem, because I feel to deserve them, and because you may find me, at least, one of the steadiest and best friends you have - I am glad you like the Camerons and think they like you - you would like Lady Vere too if you knew her.’....... promise me the address of Madame Calès who made her last Paris stays so well etc etc.  ‘It amused me to find the curiosity of good people of York on the alert about my going over can I do anything for you there? I am going on Tuesday to stay till Monday-week. Stevens gives me very good accounts of Miss W---- and I really hope he will be able to do her all the service required - I half promised a visit to go to Cromptons; but Micklegate is rather too much out of the way - besides tho’ the lodging is rather too small,  there is a room for myself and Eugenie and I shall put Thomas as near as I can. For my own sake, I only wish Steph lived anywhere but in York - but it matters not much -  I shall be glad to escape the publicity of Black Swan. Do not be very long in writing - tho’ you tell me you are but in health, I am always anxious about you. I have always considered your happiness before my own and no wish of mine has ever been put in competition with what you yourself deemed your welfare. Cheer up, my dearest Mary - if gypsy ever did tell truth, may yours have done so! As I told you I have no fault to find in one particular quarter, and no feeling which could be uncomfortable to any of us. Let the veil of charity hide whatever faults there may have been on any side, and let the memory of our bygone days be but the record of their pleasures.  God bless you my dearest Mary, ever very especially yours AL.’ I have not time just now to look for the address - you shall have it in my next letter - wrote all but the 1st 3 lines of today, and sent off at 8 50 my letter 3 pages and ends to ‘Mrs. Lawton Claremont House Leamington Warwickshire’ - an hour with my aunt -reading till 11 ½ - having read now and before during the day from 170 to 312 Fairholme’s scripture geology - damp and small rain when I got up this morning and afterwards rainy morning till between 1 and 2 - then finish afternoon and evening - F53° now at 11 ¾ pm.

Terry Pratchett: "There's a lot of Terry Pratchett in there," David Tennant said. You can find Pratchett's scarf and signature fedora hanging on a coat-and-hat rack in Aziraphale's bookshop.
"We never focus on it," said cinematographer Gavin Finney. "It's just there, and the camera goes past the hat and scarf. It was cool not to foreground it, but just to have it in the background."
An eagle eye might also spot a display of Pratchett's books as well. And a careful listener might hear a voice that sounds suspiciously like Pratchett's, although it's actually actor Paul Kaye. Kaye had previously played Pratchett in a documentary for the BBC, and so Gaiman and Mackinnon recruited Kaye to portray the author once again for a little voiceover work in Episode 4.
"There's a tiny scene where there is a radio conversation, and a guy who is supposed to be the PR guy for the nuclear power station is talking," Mackinnon told SYFY WIRE. They thought the voice should be Pratchett's, "because Terry used to be that very man," Mackinnon said, referring to the author's former career as a press office for the Central Electricity Governing Board in an area that covered four nuclear power stations.
Neil Gaiman: Pratchett and Gaiman had planned to do cameo roles together, appearing in the background while Aziraphale ate sushi in a restaurant (and Gabriel interrupted him) in Episode 1. "We would be eating all the sushi we wanted," Gaiman said. Without Pratchett to join him, Gaiman didn't feel quite right to appear in the sushi scene, so he asked Mackinnon to find him another part.
When they were talking about the movie theater scene in Episode 4, Mackinnon asked what sort of extras they should have in the background. "I said, 'We should have a couple making out in the back corner, and probably a drunk asleep,'" Gaiman recalled. "And an expression of pure joy grew on Douglas' face. And he said, 'I think we found your part.'"
"I said, 'An asleep drunk might just measure up to your acting ability,'" Mackinnon said with a laugh. (You can find Gaiman slouched in the front of the cinema.) The director cast the showrunner in another part — as the voices of the bunnies in the animation being screened at the cinema — so essentially Gaiman (as the drunk) is watching Gaiman (as the bunnies).
"All the noises of the bunnies are me," Gaiman said. "And I'm also the frog. When the animated head frog makes a weird little noise, that's me." Gaiman gets one more nod in the show. When unexpected visitors arrive at the U.S. airbase in Episode 5, the soldier at guard duty is reading American Gods.
Doctor Who: This might be one of the biggest areas of easter eggs, especially if you count the fact that Crowley is played by the Tenth Doctor, Aziraphale is played by House (from Gaiman's episode "The Doctor's Wife"), and the Metatron is played by the Master.
Beyond that, the rest are "all factored into the texture" of Good Omens, Tennant said. Adam's father Mr. Young drives a car with a license plate that reads "SID RAT" (TARDIS backwards). Mr. Young first addresses Crowley — again, the Tenth Doctor — as "Doctor" when he encounters the demon at the Satanic nuns' hospital, mistaking him for an OB/GYN in Episode 1. A child named Brian says "Exterminate!" when hanging with friends in Episode 4.
In that same episode, Crowley wonders where in the universe he might go, and one of the papers circulating around his head reads "Gallifrey." And an awkward character named Newton Pulsifer wears the Fourth Doctor's scarf as a necktie on his first day to work in Episode 2. "It's something a grown-up man might not do," costume designer Claire Anderson said. "But they thought the character would rather like Doctor Who."
Sherlock: Mackinnon, who had worked on Sherlock, was also eager to plant some easter eggs relating to the books and the show, although they might be the hard to spot (other than Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss, who appears during a World War II flashback, and Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, who provides the voice of Satan).
In Episode 1, Crowley meets Aziraphale in a park, and then they walk out to Crowley's Bentley, parked in the street. In the background of the shot is the Diogenes Club, where Mycroft Holmes likes to hang. They then go to eat crepes at the Ritz (where they will return in Episode 6), but it's not quite the Ritz — it's actually the Criterion, which is famed in both Sherlock lore (as the place where Sherlock and Watson meet for the first time, in the books) and in behind-the-scenes Sherlock history.
"When Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat, and Stephen Thompson signed up to do Sherlock, they went to the Criterion to celebrate," Mackinnon said. "But they never got to film there. We did. And so on the day we were filming there, I was texting them going, 'Guess where I'm filming!'"
Random bits: Richmal Crompton's Just William book series -- which inspired Good Omens -- appear in Aziraphale's bookshop. As a nod to Terry Gilliam, who once tried to do a movie version of Good Omens, Gaiman and Mackinnon threw in a little reference to Gilliam's origins doing animation for Monty Python.
"The license plate of Crowley's Bentley is 'Curtain' backwards," Gaiman said, because of the writing on the mausoleum in the suicidal leaves section of Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. "Curtain backwards, like it's the final curtain," Mackinnon explained. The part of the Internal Express delivery man is played by Simon Merrells, who worked with Mackinnon on Knightfall, playing the character Tancrede. And so in the end credits, his character's name here is listed as Lesley Tancrede.
The Isle of Skye: Mackinnon is very proud of being from Scotland's Isle of Skye, and inserted references to his home area wherever he could. An Isle of Skye shop is near Aziraphale's Soho bookshop, called Skye Suits. Crowley's drink of choice to drown his sorrows in Episode 5 is the Isle of Skye's most famous brand, Talisker Whisky. When turning on the radio in his Bentley, Crowley hears the "Just a Minute" host present an upcoming topic, the Isle of Skye, before a demon hijacks the broadcast. And so on.
"There are so many more easter eggs that I don't think we could just casually list them all," Gaiman said. "But the lovely thing about all of these things is that you can miss them, and you won't mind.
Big thanks to @lavellington for showing me the link to the article. You have no idea how happy I am about knowing the explanation for Crowley’s Bentley plate!

Summary, Week 3
Lecture 3
Industrial Revolution -Existing, often ancient, technologies were updated by adding power, and a whole new era began. Steam and water power were harnessed, and cast iron was used to create machines of a size not seen before, allowing the ability to do things in repeat, on large scales. - Fixed steam engines allowed better manufacturing, and steam engines on wheels (TRAINS!) allowed a new kind of transportation to revolutionize travel and distribution. - A new era of extreme engineering (bridges, tunnels) was required to assist the advance of trains.
Power and Transportation: Huge technological advances brought to you by: - Abraham Darby at Coalbrookdale - cast iron (the folks I mentioned who got steam power going but don’t really get to be part of the story in any significant way are Christiaan Huygens, Denis Papin, Thomas Savery, and Gottfried Leibniz) - Thomas Newcomen/James Watts - steam engine - George Stephensen/John Stevens - trains - Marc Brunel - tunnels (and Portsmouth Block Mills before that) - I.K. Brunel - bridges and tunnels
Textiles: More evidence of extreme advances in technology and manufacturing as a result of combining technologies and adding power sources: - John Kay - flying shuttle - Eli Whitney - cotton gin - James Hargreaves - spinning jenny - Richard Arkwright - water frame - Samuel Crompton - spinning mule - Elias Howe/Isaac Singer - sewing machines
Farming: Advances in farming began turning food into a consumable commodity. Centuries-old methods were reexamined and improved with modern machinery and power. - Cyrus McCormick - mechanical reaper - Andrew Meikle, threshing machine (horse powered) - Jerome Case - mechanical thresher (steam powered)
Design: The new ability to manufacture in repeat, to create surplus, and to distribute goods lead to an increased opportunity to use design to make things that would satisfy the growing demand.
- The Crystal Palace/Great Exhibition of 1851 helped disseminate information, inspire designers, and introduce design to the world. It was a total confusion of manufactured goods, with no clear logic behind the decisions made in their creation. Machinery was also on view to help promote technological advances. And some remarkable things were mixed in as well (Michael Thonet’s steam bent wooden chairs!!) - Joseph Paxton - Michael Thonet - August Thonet
Arts and Crafts: The philosophers, writers, and artisans of the Arts and Crafts movement believed that industry and machine manufacturing created a world focused on consumption, which could not coexist with acceptable quality of life for the people involved in manufacturing consumer goods. They promoted a return to pre-industrial methods of making things, which celebrated craftsmanship and offered more satisfying work to laborers.
As the Arts and Crafts movement spread from England to other industrialized countries, it morphed into a style that still celebrated material integrity and honesty of construction and decoration, but had less and less to do with the ideals of the movement.
• You should know these folks: – William Morris – Charles Eastlake – the Wiener Werkstatte – Josef Hoffman – Gustav Stickley
• You might like these folks: – Koloman Moser – Charles Rennie Mackintosh (and Margaret Macdonald!) – Grueby pottery (and Teco, Rookwood, Roseville)
• You totally don’t need to know these folks but maybe you want to: – A.W. Pugin – C.R. Ashbee – Lewis Hine – Philip Webb – C.F.A. Voysey
Christopher Dresser: Working at the same time as all this but making things that were completely unique. Contract designer working in many materials for many manufacturers. Brought botany and Japanese influence into Victorian manufacturing.

Hikeba from the Satellite of Love, I’m Drew, your host, as we walk through the worst wins in Auburn history that I have video of in my collection. So far on the countdown, we’ve been to Columbia, South Carolina where Auburn took down a solid Steven Garcia led Gamecock team and we watched last week as Auburn gave The Hat his final blow at LSU and saved Gus Malzahan’s coaching tenure at Auburn. This week though? This week the Mads have given us a win that really meant nothing…Thus we begin the…
Tumblr media
part of the count down. From here on, there is not much redeeming about these wins. On top of that, they are tough games to watch, where there’s no offense…no defense…or a sick combination of both, SOMETIMES EVEN IN THE SAME PLAY, as we will get to in this stink burger…the 2008 Tennessee @ Auburn game!
THE PREGAME
Both teams came in to this one with rustled fanbases to say the least. Tennessee had started the season ranked 18th in the country, coming off an SEC Eastern Division Championship in 2007, but had found the going rough so far as they entered with a 1-2 record. A win over UAB had done little to quite the fans after a loss in the Rose Bowl against UCLA in overtime to start the season and a very poor effort in a home loss to #4 Florida the week prior. The star of the Vols show was safety Eric Berry. Yup, that Eric Berry.
On offense though…well…
Tumblr media
Yeah, definitely not a player like Eric Berry. I feel like Jonathan Crompton’s music video would be done by that Wal Mart yodeling kid from a few years ago.
Auburn knew what the Vols were going through offensively at least. Auburn was 3-1 on the season and entered the contest at #15 in the country. The week prior, Auburn had lost a late lead and given up a game against #6 LSU 26-21 at home and were trying to find themselves offensively under new offensive coordinator Tony Franklin. Franklin would switch between quarterbacks Chris Todd and Kodi Burns, though he had stuck with Todd the previous 2 weeks (against Mississippi State and LSU). The defense, on the other hand, was one of Tuberville’s best products. Paul Rhodes headed up a group that led the nation in most categories and looked to keep that trend going until the offense found itself. Mix all of this together, along with CBS betting that Tennessee would beat Florida and Auburn would beat LSU as both teams were at home the prior week, AND WE HAVE OURSELVES A SLOBBER KNOCKER OF A PILLOW FIGHT!
THE GAME
Leading us on our tour of this one are some familiar faces
Tumblr media
Uncle Vern and Cousin Garry
While they aren’t the best , at least they aren’t Rod Gilmore.
And there’s the kick as Tennessee would start off from their own 25 yard line and 3 plays later they were punting to Auburn, who would start off in great field position at their own 45. Chris Todd would get the nod and the Tigers would get a first down and then would think about some trickery.
On the first look, you would say, ‘Wow, that’s some stellar defense by Tennessee to get pressure like that and snuff out the trick play.’ And you would be right, the defensive line did their job. But later, Gary had time to break down what happened on the back end and we see how close to the sun the Vols flew on that play.
MAN! If Dunn had been able to pull the trigger, that would have been the Tennessee we’ve known and loved since…well since 2008. So Auburn would punt and give it back to Mr. Crompton and Tennessee.
MAN! And Crompton could have had his first completion of the game if he would have caught his own pass there! JC wanted nooo part of that as he would have had to have taken a shot from that Auburn defensive line. No shame here, I would have ran from that one like a nest of bees were that football. Tennessee would punt it back to Auburn after that play and the Tigers would go on their best (only) offensive drive of the day, as they covered 69 (nice) yards in 11 plays, capped off by this beauty to Robert Dunn.
Tennessee would take the ball and look to begin a march to answer the Tiger TD.
Ok, so don’t do that.
Actually, JC would complete his first pass of the game on this drive. It didn’t look like this play later in the drive.
DAMN GARY! CHANNELING HIS INNER HATIN’ ASS SPURRIER AND BRINGING THE HEAT!! With that being 3rd down, Tennessee would bring out the FG unit to cut in to Auburn’s lead.
So it’s 7-3 Auburn.
Auburn would take the kick out to the 36 and look to build upon their success in the last drive.
SO that meant a punt in 3 plays. Tennessee would take it from their own 21 and with the help of some big runs, the Vols would be set up for another big 3rd down deep in Auburn territory.
No, that is not the same clip from earlier. That’s a completely different play. I don’t know who Crompton knows on that sideline but he really wants to give them a ball to take home as a souvenir. So again, the Vols would send out the Field Goal unit. I will spare you from another FG clip, it was good, and its now 7-6 Auburn. Auburn would then take the kickoff to the 27 and would get it to just short of the 5 before they were forced to punt and were able to pin the Vols back to their own 5 yard line. That’s were JC and a name that Fantasy Football owners would come to love in later years, combined to make magic.
Lost in this clip is that yes…
Tumblr media
Peyton is in the building to take this one in. And no, thank God, he didn’t have any eligibility left. I mean, don’t get me wrong, as Gary called it ‘as easy a play as you can get’, but how do you not look the ball in to the basket of the Running Back’s stomach when you are at the 5 yard line, in the student section end of the field (meaning it’s really really loud), when you’ve already had fumble troubles with that running back and yourself. So, Auburn takes a 14-6 lead.
Tennessee would take the ball from the 25 and look to just get back on track.
So that was 2nd and 2. The Vols would punt after 3rd down. Auburn would take it from the 36 and KODI IS ALIVE! The crowd loses its collective minds and, this is the stuff they wanted to see.
AUBURN’S GONNA WIN THIS ONE PAWL!! In all seriousness, that’s a Cam Newton sorta play in that everything just worked out. Auburn would get down to the Tennessee 18 where ol’ Wes Byrum would extend Auburn’s lead.
Should have said ‘try to’. SO…its 14-6 Auburn. Tennessee would take it from the 20 and try to get some points before the half.
And that’s how the half would end at 14-6.
Auburn would get the second half kick and go from the 20. Before we get to the clip, Uncle Vern and Cousin Gary will take a look at the 1st half. I warn you about this because the Red Cross is making me…avoid the stats and just know its bad. It’s real bad.
So after that Auburn would punt in 3 plays. Tennessee would answer that punt with a punt of their own and would pin Auburn at the 4 as Todd comes back in. The Tigers would look to break out of the bad position on a 3rd down play.
SO A 3 AND OUT PUNT IT IS! Tennessee, not to be out down, would get the ball from the 44.
SO A 3 AND OUT PUNT IT IS! This time Auburn would get it at the 2…
*big gulp of bourbon*
I know how this game ends and Chris Todd still has me nervous…HOW WAS THAT NOT PICKED OFF?! Good Lord, he might as well could have handed it off to the Tennessee secondary and that would have been that! Todd would lead the Tigers out of the bad position and would get to the Vol 44 before he flew too close to the sun.
JC and the Vols would begin their best drive of the day from the Auburn 37, though it would take them 9 plays to finally find paydirt.
So with the failed 2 point try, its Auburn’s lead 14-12 as we are early in the 4th quarter. The Tigers would get the kick from the 20 and would grab a 1st down before the drive stalled out and were forced to punt.
At this point, I’m not sure if Auburn really wins this game. The Vols have it at the Auburn 38 and are down just 2 points.
OH YEAH! Jonathan Crompton is the quarterback for Tennessee and they call a QB Draw on 3rd and 10! That’s right! For some reason, Tennessee punts, praying Auburn will make another mistake deep in their own territory. Auburn takes it from the 11 and punts 3 plays later. Tennessee would get it from the 42 and would be forced into a 3rd and 4 to keep the drive going.
I mean, Gary is doing my work for me. Not sure what’s happening there, but JC just wants to get to the bus ASAP.
The Tigers would get it from the 20 this time…lose 8 yards and punt. Tennessee would not take such generosity and give it back to Auburn after 3 plays. Auburn, from the 20 again, would put back in Kodi and would only lose 2 yards on this drive before punting and would give it back to Tennessee with time winding down. Once again, it would be put on the shoulders of Jonathan Crompton for a big 3rd down play.
I mean, at least JC made a smart decision and had a 30-70 chance of his guy catching it or getting a PI bailout call. However, Tennessee would punt down to the Auburn 5 where Kodi Burns would look to ice this one away.
Tennessee would use the rest of their Time Outs but it was for naught as Auburn, who gained only 77 yards in the second half, who went 3 & out 5 of the 8 times they touched the ball in the second half, who went 3 & out 7 of the 13 times they touched the ball in the game(!), held on for a 14-12 win.
THE AFTERGLOW
So, after this one, Tennessee would continue to struggle to find themselves, the lowest point of the season, a Homecoming loss to the Cowboys of Wyoming. Even finishing the season with back to back wins over Vandy and Kentucky weren’t enough to save head coach Phillip Fulmer and would pave the way for the Lane Train to pull in to Knoxville.
Auburn followed a similar path to the Vols. The following week was the debacle in Nashville where Gameday came for a Top 20 clash between Auburn and Vandy that would see the Dores beat Auburn 14-13 and the spiral began. Auburn would close out the year dropping every contest save for a homecoming win against UT-Martin. Auburn and Tommy Tuberville would part ways and would make way for Gene Chizik to make his way back to Auburn.
Well that does it for another installment of Auburn Football Theater 2020. Tune in again next week as we hit the 7th toughest victory to watch in my library…till then… hit the button Frank

Clawson’s now pulled off 4-year rebuilds at 4 different levels of CFB
Tumblr media
And his 2018 Demon Deacons should be solid once again.
Bill C’s annual preview series of every FBS team in college football continues. Catch up here!
Each week before we record Podcast Ain’t Played Nobody, Steven Godfrey and I solicit for “#AskPAPN” questions on Twitter. We always get more solid questions than we can actually use, but I saved one for this Wake Forest preview. It blew my mind a little bit.
Are PJ Fleck & Dave Clawson the same coach with completely different approaches to hype? #AskPAPN
— JP Swain (@TwoPintsJP) July 18, 2018
Fleck’s first impression was that of an impossibly energetic program builder. He went 1-11 in his first season at Western Michigan but recruited his tail off and took the Broncos to 13-0 with a Cotton Bowl bid three years later. That rebuild earned him the Minnesota job, where he’s attempting a similar house-flip.
Clawson, however, has done this a few times now. He just needs four years to win anywhere.
Fordham: 0-11 in year one, 10-3 in year four
Richmond: 3-8 in year one, 11-3 in year four
Bowling Green: 2-10 in year two, 10-3 in year five
Wake Forest: 3-9 in year one, 8-5 in year four
Clawson has done nearly identical refurbishing jobs in non-scholarship FCS, scholarship FCS, a Group of Five conference, and a power conference. That’s astounding.
As I wrote last year, that’s not the way this is supposed to work.
We like to think improvement is linear, that when our new coach takes over, he generates improvement, then more and more. Taking steps backward is no fun. Constantly getting better: very fun.
It’s also almost impossible. First, you can only rise for so long. Second, everybody else is also trying to improve. What sounds beautiful and logical on paper is rarely so in real life. Unless you’re Clawson.
Over the last three seasons, Wake has improved by 19, 28, and 23 spots, respectively, in S&P+. After that first-year tear-down, Wake has improved and improved and improved.
Tumblr media
For the first time in nine seasons, Wake Forest, the smallest school and hardest job (Duke aside, perhaps) in the ACC, played at a level above the conference average. For just the eighth time ever, they played at a top-40 level. The offense, 128th in Off. S&P+ three years earlier, was 22nd. What an absolutely masterful job by Clawson. Again.
So why doesn’t he carry the same name recognition as Fleck, who has been at this a shorter amount of time and hasn’t accomplished as much? Clawson doesn’t have Fleck’s social media game and doesn’t seem to care to. He’s just interested in coaching well, and that’s fine.
I do wonder about those first impressions, though. The first time most fans, especially in the Southeast, took notice of Clawson’s name was when he was brought to Knoxville to succeed Dave Cutcliffe as Phil Fulmer’s offensive coordinator. Quarterbacks Jonathan Crompton and Nick Stephens failed to grasp the “Clawfense,” and the Vols fell from 10th to 108th in Off. S&P+. Fulmer was pushed out after the season. The problem, I guess, is that he wasn’t there four years.
So what happens now? We don’t have much of a sample for what happens in year five and beyond. Clawson hasn’t yet stayed more than five at one stop. But his fifth Wake team has a good news, bad news situation.
Bad news first: the Demon Deacons have to replace their longtime starting quarterback, leading receiver, and five of last year’s top havoc defenders (tackles for loss, passes defensed, forced fumbles).
Good news, though: their leading rusher and entire offensive line are back, there’s still tons of experience in the front seven, and some key pieces at receiver and defensive back are now way more experienced.
Clawson has built depth that is hard to attain in Winston-Salem, but we’ll see just how much the loss of a couple of stars hurts. One thing we know for sure: doubting Clawson doesn’t get you very far.
Offense
Tumblr media
One thing Wake has going for it, when it comes to replacing quarterback John Wolford, is that junior Kendall Hinton has already done it. Hinton briefly overtook Wolford early in 2016 before he got hurt, and over parts of three seasons he has thrown for 1,502 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed for 705 more yards and 10 scores. If healthy, he’s got a decent amount going for him.
He was suspended for the first three games of the season. Either sophomore Jamie Newman or true freshman Sam Hartman will start against Tulane, Towson, and BC.
Despite past demotions, Wolford set a pretty high bar. Despite being an overwhelmed freshman in 2014, he threw for 8,794 yards and 59 touchdowns in his career, and almost half of that came last year. Spreading the ball around to four primary targets, Wolford commanded a passing game that ranked second in Passing S&P+. That’s a pretty incredible end to his story.
Tumblr media
Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports
Kendall Hinton
Two of those four targets are back. Tabari Hines used a graduate transfer to Oregon, and tight end Cam Serigne graduated, but sophomore slot man Greg Dortch and 6’5 junior Scotty Washington return after combining for 101 catches, 1,463 yards, and 12 touchdowns.
In terms of marginal efficiency, Dortch was the most efficient high-usage receiver in the league last year. Washington wasn’t far behind.
Top 10 ACC wide receivers, per marginal efficiency (min: 75 targets)
Dortch (plus-18.3 percent)
Hunter Renfrow, Clemson (plus-16.3 percent)
Jaylen Smith, Louisville (plus-15.8 percent)
Jakobi Meyers, NC State (plus-14.8 percent)
Dez Fitzpatrick, Louisville (plus-13.7 percent)
Washington (plus-12.7 percent)
Kelvin Harmon, NC State (plus-10.9 percent)
Deon Cain, Clemson (plus-10.7 percent)
Hines (plus-10.2 percent)
Ervin Phillips, Syracuse (plus-9.1 percent)
Wolford had a lot to do with those players’ efficiency levels, but there are worse things in the world than a new QB having a couple of really nice possession receivers.
The new QB will also have Matt Colburn II. Wake had lost three games in a row last fall before he took over as the primary rusher. The Deacs finished 4-2, and after rushing 48 times for 183 yards (3.8 per carry) through seven games, Colburn rushed 118 times for 721 yards (6.1) thereafter.
He had 237 yards in the 64-43 shootout win over Syracuse, and he rushed for 150 in the 55-52 bowl win over Texas A&M. The more the Wake defense struggled, the more coordinator Warren Ruggiero leaned on Colburn. The RB unit is unproven after him.
Tumblr media
Matt Colburn II
The line will also be an asset. Ruggiero’s system tends to get the ball out of the QB’s hands pretty quickly, and combined with a solid line, Wake ranked 18th in Adj. Sack Rate. The run-blocking stats weren’t amazing (56th in Adj. Line Yards, 72nd in stuff rate, 78th in power success rate), but they all improved with Colburn carrying the load, and returning every starter — including all-conference center Ryan Anderson and two third-teamers (tackle Justin Herron and guard Phil Haynes) — is a good thing.
Ruggiero’s system is designed to keep the QB out of trouble. Not only are there lots of quick passes, but there’s also quite a “zig when they think you’ll zag” element: Wake ran 55 percent of the time on standard downs (5 percentage points below the national average) but 45 percent on passing downs (10 percentage points above).
The QB situation is going to be awkward, but everything else should help as much as possible.
Defense
Tumblr media
In its first year after losing coordinator Mike Elko to Notre Dame, Wake’s defense was ... contradictory. Former Minnesota coordinator Jay Sawvel inherited a young secondary and still produced a No. 29 ranking in Passing S&P+; the Deacs also disrupted opponents’ run games as well as just about anybody, ranking 13th in stuff rate (run stops at or behind the line). That’ll help you force a lot of passing downs.
Yet Wake struggled to force passing downs. The Deacs ranked just 76th in standard-downs success rate; opponents found they could take advantage of conservative pass coverage, completing 60 percent of their passes on first and second down.
The strengths and weaknesses could flip this year. Wake will be missing four starters in the front seven (ends Wendell Dunn and Duke Ejiofor and linebackers Grant Dawson and Jaboree Williams), and the quartet combined for 47 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, and nine passes defensed. Each of them took part in at least 12 run stuffs, too, and only one returnee (tackle Zeek Rodney, with 16) could match that.

Justin Strnad (23)
The hope is that the pass defense improves enough to offset the run defense’s regression. It’s possible. First, you’ve still got some potentially strong pass rushing options in buck linebacker Justin Strnad and lineman Willie Yarbary. And while end is awfully young, sophomore Carlos Basham Jr. saw plenty of playing time last year, and redshirt freshman Mike Allen was one of the most touted recruits on the roster.
More importantly, you’ve got experience in the secondary this time. Among last year’s top seven tacklers in the secondary were three freshmen and two sophomores. Only safeties Cameron Glenn and Jessie Bates III were upperclassmen, and Glenn (3.5 TFLs, nine passes defense) is back.
Corners Essang Bassey and Amari Henderson are juniors and could be ready for star turns after combining for five interceptions and 28 breakups. Bassey might already be a star; he combined 19 of those passes defensed with six tackles for loss, rare territory for a cornerback. Throw in sophomore Ja’Sir Taylor, and you’ve got not only an aggressive CB tandem in 2018, you also have potentially one of the league’s best in 2019. If a sophomore safety — either Luke Masterson or Coby Davis — steps up to replace Bates, this unit could improve pretty dramatically.

Special Teams
Wake Forest’s Special Teams S&P+ rating in 2017 was plus-0.0, meaning it provided neither positive nor negative overall value. The return game, led by Dortch and safety Chuck Wade Jr., should remain solid, but awesome place-kicker Mike Weaver is gone.
Punter Dom Maggio has a booming leg (44.1 yards per punt), but the Deacs ranked just 101st in punt efficiency because Maggio out-kicked his coverage. Add a little more height to his kicks, and this could be a solid unit again, but losing Weaver hurts.

Though Wake’s trajectory under Clawson has been predictably upward, the Deacs’ strengths and weaknesses flipped from 2016 (110th in Off. S&P+ and 22nd in Def. S&P+) to 2017 (22nd in Off. S&P+ and 65th in Def. S&P+).
That paints a picture of a team with both significant upside — a team with 2016’s defense and 2017’s offense would have ranked in the S&P+ top 15 — and a steep downside — combining 2016’s offense and 2017’s defense would have barely ranked in the top 100.
With the loss of Wolford, it also suggests a large set of unknowns. Does the defense still have 2016’s upside? Can anyone match the rhythm that Wolford established with Hines, Dortch, and company, especially with the projected starting QB missing nearly the first month of the year? What’s the real Wake Forest?
The climb is hard to ignore, and S&P+ is pretty confident in the Deacs’ upside. They are projected 34th overall — 24th on offense, 59th on defense — and even in a brutal ACC, they are projected to make their third straight bowl, a feat they’ve only managed on one other occasion (2006-08). There are four likely wins (two of which come during Hinton’s suspension), two likely losses, and six games with a projected margin of seven or fewer points.
I’m pretty confident in Clawson’s ability to replace key pieces. Maybe he doesn’t care about the fanfare, but Clawson has become one of football’s most impressive builders. I’m interested to see how he performs as a maintainer.

Plans going in for £250m Bolton shopping centre revamp
Plans to redevelop the Crompton Place Shopping Centre in Bolton are set to be submitted to the council following the thumbs-up from local residents.
Public consultation events and an online social media campaign detailing the £250m project provoked an”overwhelmingly positive response”.
The project is being developed by Bolton Regeneration Limited – a partnership between Beijing Construction Engineering Group International (BCEGI) and Midia.
It will include an improved retail and dining experience, new pedestrian streets and public realm, new ‘A Grade’ office space, high quality homes and a hotel.
The scheme, which has the working title of ‘Bolton Victoria Square’, is a strategically important step in Bolton Council’s £1bn masterplan for the city.
Steven Turner, Director of Bolton regeneration Limited, said: “We would like to thank all of the people who came along to visit the public consultation events to share their views on our exciting plans for Bolton Victoria Square.
“We received an overwhelmingly positive response from the public and believe this development meets the needs of the local community and visitors alike whilst stimulating long-term economic growth for the town centre and wider borough.”
Justin Cove, Director at Hive Land and Planning said:“This is an exciting time for Bolton.
“Bolton Victoria Square sits right in the heart of the town centre and aligns with the wider aspirations for the town and if approved it will completely transform Bolton.
“It is a huge investment into the local economy, creating new working, living and social spaces which will kick-start the regeneration of the town and build momentum for delivering long-term change.”
Councillor David Greenhalgh, Leader of Bolton Council said: “We are committed to making Bolton town centre a great place to live, work, shop and visit.
“The council’s £100m fund has resulted in significant developer and investor confidence in Bolton, and it’s great to see such an exciting scheme coming forward with the aim of transforming the heart of the town centre.”
