mary sue fics aren't inherently bad because they're self-inserts or wish-fulfillment or based on the author or whatever, they're generally bad because we all got told not to write them fairly early on so most of them are written by newbies who just haven't yet learned to write well, because those are the only people who haven't been scared off from the concept yet. that character is bad because the writer doesn't know how to write. that's most of it.
