i am alone in my domestic Amber/Zelkov fortress. you all simply do not understand the sheer potential of a man knitting another man a sweater and the recipient actually knowing how difficult it is and gushing over how it’s even better than his own family’s handiwork. and then Amber invites Zelkov to move into his hamlet. like. i feel like it’s one conversation short of Amber’s mother demanding he make an honest man out of Zelkov.

“No,” Zelkov laments, frowning up at him. “I was enjoying the quiet.”

Undeterred, Kagetsu secures a seat next to his fellow retainer on the grass. He shuffles closer, leaving space, and makes direct eye contact. “I have a question for you.”

“I do not like the light in your eyes.”

Kagetsu grins – finds he can’t help it. He leans a little closer, happy for the bothered frown that spreads across Zelkov’s face. Happy to have been the cause of it. “What do you know about love?”

“I am knitting.”

I’ve been consumed by thoughts of louis/zelkov since I got all of their supports and now would like to share some silly little thoughts <3

- since louis is always trying to take care of him, zelkov ends up picking up needlework as a hobby to help ‘repay’ louis with mended clothes

- whenever zelkov has trouble sleeping he ends up going to louis for louis’s soothing tea, which eventually leads to him falling asleep on one of louis’s chairs. louis lets him sleep and wakes him up with a morning cup of tea of course.

Zelkov: *Thank* you, for sparring the other day.

Roy: Oh! Any time. What's this?

Zelkov: I have *prepared* tea for us. Do you have a *moment?*

Roy: For refreshments and company? Absolutely. Really, though, I don't need such thanks just for training with you.

Zelkov: Hm. How is it?

Roy: Delicious and refreshing.

Zelkov: I am... glad.

Roy: Hey, you alright?

Zelkov: *Forgive* me. Even a moment as seemingly *mundane* as this is... special. That you are *enjoying* something I made for you is touching. I must sound like a *fool.*

Roy: No, not at all.

Roy: Listen, I may not know much about how you knew me, but I feel like we're friends already. I value every minute with my friends.

Zelkov: You are so quick to *bond* with others. So *young*, yet so appreciative of *time.*

Roy: Well... not to be a bit of a downer, but I've been through some things. It makes you really cherish what you have.

Zelkov: Yes, it is a *lesson* which took me longer to learn.

Roy: There's no use worrying that you're too late. We just have to make the most of now. Um, what was that line you'd said?

Roy: Emblem, engage!

Zelkov: Hah, it doesn't work *quite* like that, but I admire your *spirit.*

i fucking love kagetsu hes soo funny because why the fuck did he just run into the elusian palace and just start beating the shit out of everyone?? who let him in?? did he just knock out the guards (probably actually)??? how did he get so far in without any of the royal family saying anything?? why was hyacinth cool with this?? i have so many questions and he answers none of them and honestly? slay king! beat up more randos for shits and giggles hell yeah!!

SETTING: Several Years Pre-game

Zelkov kept his hood up and his face down around the eldest princess. Around everyone, really. His job was to serve her, to defend her, to stain his hands so she would not need to. He was efficient, above all else.

He landed beside her, dropping down from a rooftop, barely visible but for the glint of blades that dripped red. If he hadn't wanted her to notice his return, he wouldn't have been seen or heard at all. However, he allowed her to with a singular nod.

She thanked him, there was a brief sensation of lips on his cheek, perhaps the thanks was even warm, but he did not feel it. He was no longer a creature who deserved such things, and he needed no trivial, empty words as payment for doing his duty. His most prized currency was time, the time to do what he wanted, to run himself so ragged that his inner shadows did not stir.

He turned his head from her, stowing away his knives.

"You owe me *nothing.*"

There was no doubt in his mind that she had heard you are nothing. But a duty. A job. He did not care to clarify. He did not care for Elusia as he once had as a home, and he no longer fell with reverence before the Fell Dragon, his spirit as empty as the tundras, his only hope to pursue lifetimes of work within his singular one.

He escorted her as her shadow, as a pursuit that came with orders which he craved.

Anything but idleness.

And I have to say...

Best decision I’ve ever made

This Marth did not know him. Zelkov had made a blunder or two with the living lords he’d met as Emblems. The urge to rush to him, to spill his heart out, had to be paused. He would give context for this encounter. Marth deserved it.

Zelkov bowed slightly, a hand on his chest. “Your Majesty— I know you, some small *part* of you, yet I know we meet as strangers.”

Oh, it was harder than he thought it’d be.

“Even so, I must give you my thanks. Your spirit, a friend to mine. Your words, sweet but far from nothing. Though I am unsure I want to spring exactly what I am thankful for on you on a first meeting… I needed to express my sentiments anyway.”

Lost families, a black hole stuck inside their souls that vengeance could not force closed. No, no he could not dress that wound there in the sunny afternoon of this greeting.

“I am glad to see you again. You are someone worth getting to know *twice.*”

                Another arrival from Elyos, a population with little rarity yet so many unique individuals to make up for it. Marth straightens with the recollection of a freshly minted faculty member- cranes his neck, really, for the other is considerably tall. New names may float on the periphery of knowledge for some; painlessly pushed aside minutiae, much too easily forgotten until they earn their relevance; but not to this king who prides in those around him. Faces and names even never before crossed held value. The potential to evolve into something more just as a stranger might bloom into a friend or an ally on a choice bit of sunlight, a little spritz of water, a kindly exchange just like so.

               "Zelkov, is it? You have a way with words that stirs the heart. That makes a stranger feel that he is worth something." He is not the spirit Zelkov speaks of, the very first words shed from Marth's mouth express this, but such tenderhearted speech could nevertheless honor anyone and humble them in the same stride. "...Though, I suppose in your case stranger is not truly the right word."

               A sheepish quality tinges him on the note. The emotions splayed out to him with the unbolted honesty of an open palm are not new. Similar encounters have lined his week without seeming end. It troubles the heart in some ticklish way- though his ignorance by no means deems him responsible, a compassionate man cannot help but to feel helpless at the things he cannot recall. For these happy, sad, or bitter reunions Marth can offer no recourse except a new path they might walk together. But... for the passionately spoken Zelkov, there is at least one thing more:

               "I cannot speak for the other one- the Hero-King of your land. But hearing your fond admissions, I am certain the feelings within them reached him as well. He must have treasured your friendship just the same." Fingers press into a light perch against his heart. With the sensitivity of one who does not wish to dishonor a memory, the present Hero-King forms his words carefully. He is little known to the fact they leave him with surprising ease, a familiar warmth and gesture of equality.

                "It brings me to say that I wish to know you as he did. But to that perhaps there is one deterrent." A play performed by different actors, even traveling at an oblique, will still conform so long as it follows the same script; falling within bounds of the same fatebound song and dance. Such forces march him onward to the same kind statements, the same destination and smile, with an inexorable nature that even a king cannot undo. "You called me 'Your Majesty', but I will accept no offer nor implication of service. Let us enjoy this time together, Zelkov. As equals. Simply Marth will do."
