Iris Van Herpen - Artist Research

Iris Van Herpen is a Dutch Designer who pushes the boundaries in Fashion.Creating these hypnotic garments she uses 3D printing and transparent fabric and her high level of craftsmanship.
I take inspiration with many of her collections and âsensory seasâ being one of the three. With taking ideas from animals of the deep she was able to create these garments with beautiful colour palettes and silhouette.
âRoots of Rebirth â focuses on nature itself and I absolutely adore with the warm colour palette in this collection and her use of organza silk has got me very interested to where I would love to work with that type of fabric
âSyntopiaâ, intertwining relationships between the organic and inorganic. Again with herpen using organza i was definitely sold into using that fabric into my own experiments.Birds were her main source of inspiration by collaborating with Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta they provided a glass bird for the inorganic aspect of the collection.
I am very excited to use Herpen as one of my artist research as this designer was able to push boundaries and created her collection that has never been done before and having her clothes of the catwalk and seeing how it moves is so mesmerising and with my project that an aspect that I want to take and use that to my advantage.

And finally for #cosmerefashionweek some actual couture... and in that case a robe from the Valentino Couture Spring Collection 2021 and the other from Iris Van Herpenâs Syntopia runway collection. Especially Van Herpenâs designs fit so nicely into a fantastical setting... it was challenging to translate the texture of her crazy creations and I am not sure how satisfied I am with this one overall, buuuut I definitly want to put some singers and fused into some of her designs... at some point.

Artist Research - Iris Van Herpen
Iris Van Herpen is a Dutch fashion designer born in 1984 and known for fusing technology with traditional haute couture craftsmanship. She opened her own label Iris Van Herpen in 2007 and has since continuously exhibited her new collections at Paris Fashion Week as well as being included in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
Herpen is an inspiration of mine because of how her pieces appear to bend reality, transforming the human form into abstract flowing shapes (similar to how Dorothea Tanning depicts her subjects after 1955). In particular I am a fan of her 2018 collection âSyntopiaâ based on âthe new worlds that arise within synthetic biology and the intertwining relationships between the organic and the inorganic.â By building up her clothing in intricate ways such as thousands of individual laser cut pieces, she can create movement that appears liquid-like and flowing.

(Two garments from her collection âSyntopiaâ)
Here is a mask also made as part of the above collection which reminds me of my own painting and collages exploring layering of faces:

Fashion Worshop
In our fashion workshop on Monday we were asked to:
Pick a designer we admire and find out more about them.
Pick two collections from any designer that we love/ find inspiration from.
Claire Waight Keller
I really admire designer Claire Waight Keller. She has worked as artistic director for many different luxury brands including Pringle of Scotland, Chloé and Givenchy.
She started her career in New York as a stylist for Calvin Klein then moved to Ralph Lauren. She was hired by Tom Ford for Gucci responsible for womenâs ready to wear and accessories. From there she became artistic director in her whatever new job she came across.
Her most famous piece of work in my opinion would have to be the wedding dress she designed for Meghan Markle.

Iris Van Herpen Collections
Roots of Rebirth
Syntopia
Roots of Rebirth
Roots of rebirth is her most recent collection (s/s 2021). She explores a symbiosis of high technology and the craftsmanship of couture. Her collection showcases the intricacy of fungi and the life that lives under our feet.

Syntopia
Syntopia is Van Herpens Fall 2018 collection. She explores the worlds that arise in a future that bridges utopian and dystopian ideals. The collection acknowledges the current scientific shift in which biology converges with technology.

I really admire how sheâs not afraid of experimenting with different materials. Her pieces are real works of art.

Iris Van Herpen -Â Haute couture Avant-gardiste
Skeleton
Syntopia
Morphogenesis
.

These are some of the inspiration pictures of Brienneâs parade look in Games to Play. A lot of Brienneâs clothes in this fic will be inspired by Iris Van Herpen, specifically her Sensory Seas, Hypnosis, Shift Souls, and Syntopia collections. (The above photo is from her Fall 2017 Collection)Â

Iris van herpen is a highly inspirational designer when it comes to a multitude of topics. She is innovative in every which was she designs. Her collections are many-a-time inspired by nature and its processes but also its relation to us and translate these processes and relations in a poetic way in which silhouettes and materials are equally ground and breath taking. The collections which have inspired me in the process of my concept creation are Syntopia, Between the Lines and Escapism. All three collections show natures and/or our relationship juxtaposed with physicality, digital, and the (in)organic. Even though I feel highly inspired by her designs, I want to bring a more functional aspect to my designs. I adore her poetic approach and material innovation but in order for my collection to have the intended effect I am searching for it needs to be more than only beautiful innovation, it needs to be meaningful!

Iris van Herpen
Fashion designer Iris van Herpen has created a series of dresses that replicate the feathers and soundwave patterns of birds in flight, and showcased them alongside a kinetic lighting installation by Studio Drift.
Amsterdam-based Van Herpen studied the movement of birds' wings to create her Syntopia collection, which she presented at Le Trianon on 2 July, for Paris Haute Couture fashion week.
To accompany them, Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta of Studio Drift created an installation of moving glass tubes that also capture the motion of bird flight.
Each of Van Herpen's 17 designs combine both organic and inorganic forms, to highlight the convergence of natural biology and manmade technology.
Traditional weaving techniques are combined with high-tech digital fabrication, resulting in a series of garments featuring complex parametric patterns. These range from pleated dresses made from liquid-coated silk organza, to wool coats made using laser cutting.
"As a former dancer, the transformation within movement has hypnotised me," said Van Herpen. "For this collection I looked closely at the minutiae of bird flight and the intricate echoing forms within avian motion."

Designer Research - Iris Van Herpen
A designer that we had previously looked at is Iris Van Herpen.
I actually went and did some research on her other projects and looking at her meta morphism collection there was a garment that was actually pretty similar to my idea of the waves.
on her garment they are quite big but I would have it smaller and just placed on the centre of the front.

Another one of her garments had the wave look to it but it was in a way more flat but still quite sculptural. I actually found this garment really nice and went really well with my idea for my garment.

Phantom Syntopia - Exterior coachwork: iridescent magnetism To create the stunning, shimmering exterior, the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective developed a one-off Liquid Noir paint. Iridescent in sunlight, it reveals Purple, Blue, Magenta and Gold undertones when viewed at different angles. To achieve this effect, the marqueâs darkest solid-black paint is overlaid with a finish incorporating a mirror-like pigment, selected for its colour-shifting properties. To add a subtle, elegant shimmer, the team developed a brand-new technique for applying pigment to the clearcoat â a process that took several months, including over 3,000 hours of testing and validation alone. On closer inspection, the motor carâs bonnet is seen to feature a subtle rendering of the Weaving Water motif that appears throughout the interior, produced by carefully redistributing the pigment during the finishing process. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpr7iVeLo9P/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
