Testing new environmental dataloggers: Pt. 1
Happy Preservation Week!
My name is Erin Fitterer and I am a third-year student at the Conservation Center at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, with a focus on objects and time-based media. Though I am now focusing on other materials, much of my pre-program experience before attending NYU was actually in paper conservation, and I’m excited to be able to work in a library again. This semester, I am working with Jessica Pace on a project involving the dataloggers used by the Barbara Goldsmith Preservation and Conservation Department to monitor collections storage spaces at Bobst Library.
Tumblr media
Dataloggers are an important tool when it comes to the care of collections. A datalogger is a device that records data about its surroundings at a regular interval, allowing conservators to monitor the environment of a given room or area over a long period of time. Depending on how they are made, a datalogger can record a wide range of information about a space, including monitoring vibrations and light levels. As conservators, we are most interested in monitoring the temperature and humidity levels in locations where collections are stored. Previously, conservators from the Preservation Department have been using PEM2 dataloggers. These devices monitor both temperature and relative humidity. To access the data, a USB device must be inserted into each logger. Unfortunately, the PEM2 device is no longer being supported by its manufacturer. To ensure continued access to loggers that can be calibrated and updated, we set out to find a replacement.
The first step for replacing PEM2 dataloggers was research. We wanted to find a datalogger that was able to record similar information as the PEM2 devices (namely relative humidity and temperature). Technology has changed since the introduction of the PEM2 to the market. While being able to capture the data from each device with a USB is a straightforward process, newer models enable the data to be accessed via the library’s WiFi network from any computer without needing to go to the location of each datalogger. This would allow our staff to monitor the collection in real-time, without needing to physically access each device.
When considering what we wanted in our new dataloggers, we looked for loggers that met several criteria, including: wireless capability, unlimited software storage, visible display, and the ability to send alarms to our computer/phone. Ultimately, we decided to test out: Dickson DWE DicksonOne Display, Lascar High Accuracy Wi-Fi (no picture yet as we are waiting for it to arrive),  and WirelessTag.  These loggers, with exception of the WirelessTag (which has no display) met all of the criteria that we had listed above. During testing, we will be evaluating the type of power source of the datalogger (whether it needed to be plugged in or not, the average battery life, and so forth), the accuracy of the recorded temperature and relative humidity, and the ease of use of both the loggers and their software.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We decided to use saturated salt chambers to test the accuracy of loggers’ ability to detect relative humidity because each type of saturated salt solution has its own relative humidity (you can see a table documenting each relative humidity for its respective salt here). There are a number of recorded relative humidities for saturated salt solutions. We chose three salts for our testing chambers: sodium chloride (NaCl), RH 75.3%; magnesium chloride (MgCl), RH 32.8%; lithium chloride (LiCl), RH 11.3% . These three salts represent a broad range of relative humidities that will allow us to see how the devices perform under a range of conditions. To create the saturated salt solution testing chambers, we followed instructions posted on the Conservation Wiki written by Samantha Alderson and Rachael Perkins Arenstein. The lithium chloride and magnesium chloride were purchased from a chemical supply company. For the sodium chloride, we used Kosher sea salt purchased at a nearby grocery store. To create the chambers, we cut windows into three plastic food storage containers. Over each window, we taped a piece of Gortex.
To prepare the salt solutions, we researched how much salt needed to be added to the water in order to create a saturated salt solution. We found a few publications that provided the ratios of water to salt used to achieve a saturated salt solution. Using these publications as a guide, for each salt solution, we measured 100 mL of water into a beaker. This water was heated on a hot plate, though not allowed to boil. For each of the salt solutions, salt was slowly added and allowed to dissolve. Once dissolved, more salt was added to the solution. Once the salt no longer dissolved (that is, it appeared on the bottom of the beaker), the solution was removed from the heat and allowed to cool. The result was a thick slurry mixture that was subsequently poured into the plastic food storage container. Each container and its salt solution were placed in a larger air-tight container. Within these larger containers, the datalogger devices will be placed. We will provide an update once we complete our testing.

Export Your Ubidots Data to Google Sheets:
In this, we can extract the data stored in the Ubidots cloud for further analysis. The possibilities are enormous; for instance, you could create an automatic report generator and send them to your customers every week.
Another application would be device provisioning; if you have thousands of devices to deploy, and their information is in a Google Sheet, you could create a script to read the sheet and create a Ubidots data source for every line on the file. Steps to do this-
Create a Google Sheet and add two sheets to it with these names:
 Variables
Values
From your Google Sheet, click on "Tools" then "Script Editor...", then "Blank Project".
Open the Script Editor.

Monitor Temperature Sensitive Products With Temperature Data Logger
Monitor temperature sensitive products throughout storage and transport with a single-use logger. You can include an internal sensor and a J, K or T thermocouple probe of your choice. Generate PDF reports and graphs with no software required.
Some medical devices, like vaccines, must be kept at a specific temperature to prevent degradation and loss of efficacy. Other industrial processes, like food canning, require proof that the product has reached a high temperature to destroy organisms such as botulism. Using a quality temperature data logger has many advantages.
High Temperature
In areas such as retort sterilization, autoclave validation and food processing, a high temperature data logger can help to protect product integrity. It can also record the temperature of critical vaccines and pharmaceutical products to ensure they have been stored at a high enough level to destroy organisms like legionella.
Many of these devices are small enough to fit inside a bottle, jar or pouch. They may have a small LCD display for viewing real time readings and alarm indication. They are designed to connect to a PC via USB, Bluetooth or wireless technology and can be downloaded for analysis.
Some loggers come with software that allows you to set the logging parameters, start and stop the device, and view historic readings in graph and table format. Some even allow you to export the information into Excel for more in-depth analysis. This makes it easy to generate reports that are compliant with regulatory guidelines.
Low Temperature
If you need to monitor a cold environment with a low temperature data logger, the EL-CC offers simplicity and accuracy. This easy-to-use, automated device eliminates the need for manual walk-around and logbook recording by instantly alerting you to critical areas of your operation.
The EL-CC loggers provide date and time stamped temperature readings to help you identify any excursion that may have occurred. Alarm limits can be set to notify you if temperatures approach unsafe levels, preventing the loss of priceless food items.
The EL-CC also features an on-site display that displays current readings, visual alarms and battery level. The logger is compatible with the latest Software for graphical and tabular viewing and easy data download. A unique feature of the logger is that it automatically pauses logging when unplugging the probe – reducing setup time and eliminating the possibility for missing an excursion or record. This also helps to maintain the integrity of the data when the logger is not in use.
Ambient Temperature
The quality temperature loggers work independently to record the ambient temperatures experienced in your supply chain. They provide valuable data that helps ensure that your products stay within acceptable tolerances for shipping and storage. They can be used as a replacement for manual monitoring using thermometers, and they can save you money by replacing the need to pay staff to perform frequent readings across large facilities.
Our mobile temperature loggers come in the shape of USB sticks and are easily transported between locations for recording, with no need to connect a computer. They store a large amount of data and are capable of providing high and low temperature alarms. They also generate reports for each measurement cycle. Our WiFi ambient hygrometer/temperature sensor is designed to remotely monitor the temperature and humidity of vaccines, pharmaceuticals, blood plasma, chilled foods and other medical goods in medical refrigerators and freezers. It can alert you via email or a sound alarm when it detects temperature excursions.
Temperature Sensitive Products
Many types of products must be kept within certain temperature ranges for safety and effectiveness reasons. For example, pharmaceuticals and vaccines need to be kept at a certain temperature or they can lose their potency. Whether you are shipping temperature sensitive products or you are storing them at your facility, having the ability to monitor these temperatures can help you avoid product damage or loss of efficacy and meet regulatory compliance standards.
A Few Words to Say
Temperature data loggers come in various forms to meet your needs. Some are designed to be portable and will work independently of a power source. They are able to sample ambient and external temperatures at a set interval, then transmit their measurements via WiFi or Bluetooth to your device. This can eliminate the need to travel out to the data logging location to recover measurements or alerts.
Some temperature loggers offer additional functions, such as the ability to record humidity along with temperature. This is especially useful for applications in manufacturing, transportation and storage where both temperature and humidity are critical factors.

Die Industrie 4.0 benötigt Gehäuse für smarte Sensoranwendungen
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Applikation Robuster UHF Reader

Refrigerator Calibration to Ensure Your Medical Refrigerator is Working Smooth
Tumblr media
Proper refrigerator calibration is essential to preserve the efficacy of your costly vaccines and other medications. The optimum temperature to store your vaccines in a medical refrigerator is between 2 to 8 degrees centigrade, as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The temperature range must be kept constant during the transportation and storage of your vaccine. Most medical refrigerators are equipped with sensitive temperature sensors and digital controllers to keep your medical refrigerator within the required temperature range. However, these temperature probes and digital controllers lose their accuracy with time.
The National Institute of Standards (NIST) records that 35% of wasted vaccines are due to uncalibrated medical refrigerators. It has prompted NIST to set up a calibration standard for all medical refrigerators. For you to be within the CDC and NIST calibration requirements, it is advisable to calibrate your medical refrigerator regularly. At Biotechnical Services Inc., we offer precise medical refrigerator calibration in San Francisco. We use the latest calibration technology and equipment to produce the most accurate and premier calibration and validation standards.
How to Keep Your Medical Refrigerator Calibrated
Use a Calibrated Medical Refrigerator
Most medical refrigerators come with pre-installed temperature probes and digital controllers. These controllers are often calibrated according to NIST standards and often accompanied by a calibration certificate lasting for a year or two. The calibration certificate act as proof that the temperature is within the standard range approved by the CDC. However, after the calibration period elapses, you need to recalibrate your refrigerator.
Use of Calibrated Thermal Recorder and Data Logger
A thermal recorder refers to an internal temperature probe that is mainly combined with a small digital thermometer, i.e. a data logger. The data logger is mostly NIST calibrated and has a different price range according to its features. You may purchase a data logger that is Bluetooth or WiFi-enabled, or one with sophisticated high-tech cloud-based notification and reporting software. Place your data logger inside your medical refrigerator next to your specimen. Ensure that you pass its connecting wires through the data loggers’ ports to the display or a monitor, mounted mainly on top of your medical refrigerator for easier temperature monitoring. If you want to install thermal recorders and data loggers in your medical refrigerator, Biotechnical Services Inc. has experienced and qualified technical staff. At Biotechnical Services Inc., we will install your data loggers and help you with refrigerator calibration in San Diego and its environs.
Recalibrate Your Medical Refrigerator
When choosing either a calibrated medical refrigerator or a data logger, consider the ease of recalibration for each option. Since most medical refrigerators lack NIST calibrated temperature controllers, adding a thermal recorder and a data logger for alarms and VFC reporting is advisable. Having both a temperature controller and a data logger provides dual reporting and eliminates the chances of losing your products in the refrigerator. Most data loggers require that you ship them to the manufacturer for calibration. However, you can contact a calibration specialist for onsite calibration. At Biotechnical Services Inc., we offer the services of onsite medical refrigerator calibration. Once you notice a deviation in temperature reading, contact us at Biotechnical Services Inc. for your onsite medical refrigerator calibration in San Francisco and other regions of California.
How to Keep Your Medical Refrigerator Working Smooth
Check The Door Seal
You should check your medical refrigerator door seal to determine if there is any wear and tear. When you close the refrigerator door, ensure that there is no gaps between its body and the seal. If your seal has a tear, contact a technical for seal replacement to make your refrigerator run efficiently.
Check The Fan and Motor
Always clean both the cooling fans outside and inside your medical refrigerator to eliminate the trapped dust and particles. When cleaning, use a damp cloth to dust off the motor and the fan blades. Clear all the residue and ensure that the cooper tubing remains insulated and intact.
Clean The Inner Cabinet
The shelving and the entire inner cabinet unit need a thorough cleaning to avoid the growth of bacteria or fungi. Avoid cleaning the inner cabinet when the vaccines or other medicines are inside. Opening the cabinet door for cleaning will make the refrigerator temperature out of range. To eliminate the bacteria or fungi, use a disinfectant such as Lysol.
Check Electrical Connections and Power Cord
To ensure the safety of your medical refrigerator, ensure that the appliance plug is not burnt looking, melted, broken, or twisted up. Ensure that the electrical connections to the power cord are not worn out and that the insulation is still intact without any strip or an exposed conductor.
Other Equipment to Check
Ensure that the data loggers and temperature controllers give precise and accurate notifications and reports. Ensure that your calibration certificate is not expired. If the calibration period has elapsed, contact a specialized for immediate calibration. Check your battery backup system to avoid losses due to power interruptions. It is essential to check the battery backup at least weekly.
Conclusion
Medical refrigerator calibration ensures that your vaccines and other medicines are in the correct temperature range. Inaccurate temperature reading could cause you losses. It is vital to keep your medical refrigerator accurate at all times. At Biotechnical Services Inc., we can install data loggers and temperature controllers in your refrigerator professionally. Contact us at Biotechnical Services Inc. for your medical refrigerator calibration in San Francisco and its environs when you notice a slight change in temperature reading.
