what do you think of Purple’s adjustable bed base? it looks nice in concept but looks like it wouldn’t allow for airflow underneath the mattress?? (sincerest apologies if this has been asked before, i tried looking first but you know what tumblr’s search function is like haha)

Most adjustable bases are pretty comparable. I don’t love the Purple ones as much as the ones made by Tempurpedic because our floor model Purple bases have all died.

The Tempur floor models are all going strong after thousands of demos so I suspect they’ll have better longevity in home as well.

That said Purple still makes better ones than Leggett and Platt or Nectar. But because the way they’re upholstered as long as there’s not water between the bed and base when they get set up they’re not a mold risk.

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday voted unanimously to block Tempur Sealy International’s takeover of Mattress Firm. About a year ago Tempur Sealy agreed to acquire the retailer for $4 billion. The merger of Tempur Sealy’s manufacturing and supply chain operations and Mattress Firm’s store fleet would foster “enormous power at multiple parts of the mattress supply chain” and enable the combined entity “to suppress competition and raise prices for mattresses for millions of consumers,” the FTC said. The commission also authorized a federal legal challenge. In a statement, Tempur Sealy expressed confidence “in the procompetitive rationale for this transaction,” and its ability to prevail in court quickly, “which would allow us to close the transaction in late 2024 or early 2025.”

Ahaha so this is quite literally what a Tempur mattress does (or any memory foam I guess but Tempur have the whole.. NASA technology spiel) and it's great for a while until you want to.. idk, move an inch? Or get out of bed in a hurry? BECAUSE THE FUCKING THING DOES INDEED LITERALLY SWALLOW YOU WHOLE

Another mattress question!

I've been getting a lot of ads for Big Fig mattresses which are supposedly made for heavier people. As a fat person, having a mattress that I don't wear out or completely break within a couple of months would be ideal, honestly. Do you know anything about this brand, or have any additional recs for a mattress for a fat person and their rather average weight partner?

I did get one testimonial on the brand from someone who likes theirs a lot. Looking over specs it seems like it has a solid coil count. The two things that give me pause- you can’t try before buying- I really distrust mattresses that you can’t lay on first.

The second thing that gives me pause is the lack of padding. Will foam break down faster under weight? Somewhat. But memory foam not so much and bigger people still need some padding.

You can add a topper but commercially available foams aren’t as good as what goes into most beds and that means you’ll just be swapping toppers out more frequently as cheap foam gives out on you.
