why do when i upload a photo on mobile it appears as a text post with an image embedded to it?

Hi! Great question. Our mobile apps use the Neue Post Format (NPF).

Where our legacy post types were based strictly on the main content type, the NPF enables you to add different content blocks in a single post.

All new original posts created via NPF are considered legacy regular/text type posts. The semantic of a single “post type” no longer makes sense for NPF posts that can have a variety of content block types.

You can also use the NPF on web. Enable it by turning on the Beta toggle in the top right corner:

Let’s take a closer look. Here are two posts I made on my test blog:

The post on the left is a legacy post. The post on the right is an NPF post. Here, they look identical.

However, NPF posts that contain media can look a bit weird on your blog if you’re using a theme that relies heavily on the legacy post types. Check out the Tumblr theme documentation if you’d like to tackle it on your own, or check out other theme options at tumblr.com/themes.

@mynameisanakin The beta post editor is currently enforcing an inappropriate post-length, yes - I've tested that and reported the problem to staff myself. However, it's not being enforced on the database level, as I've hacked my way around it by breaking up the text with readmores and other non-text-type content blocks. This indicates to me that this is a glitch, not the intended behavior. (Mentions and some other features are also working inconsistently.)

Additionally, the "Neue Post Format documentation" link in the first post says that the total max text length of a post is ~900000 characters, 1000 4096-character-max text blocks, or 1 MB, whichever comes first. I'm not seeing anything in the "Help Center article" link that contradicts this, so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

The words "by intent" do not appear on any of the above linked pages, and "intentional" appears only on this line:

"Note that because of the 1MB total post content size limit, it is not possible to have all 1,000 allowable text blocks have 4,096 characters each. This is intentional."

If you've got another source, could you please provide it?

Overall Post size limit

There is an overall limit of 1MB (one megabyte) to a Post's total byte size when it's stored. This does not include uploaded media data like images, video, and audio, which have their own limits; this just includes the Post's text content and any references to uploaded media. Theoretically this is 1 million characters, but since the NPF JSON itself takes up character space when stored, in practice the total limit is probably closer to 900,000 characters.

Total Content Blocks Limit

The maximum number of total content blocks allowed in a single post is 1,000.

Text Blocks

The maximum number of text blocks allowed in a single post is 1,000.

Text Block Length

The maximum character length (not byte length) of a text block is 4096 characters. This includes multibyte characters such as emoji.

Note that because of the 1MB total post content size limit, it is not possible to have all 1,000 allowable text blocks have 4,096 characters each. This is intentional.

API developers can now access our activity and blocks API.

In the latest version of the Tumblr app for iOS and Android, tags added when someone reblogs your post are shown in activity.

In the beta post editor on web, you can now insert a single line break in chat and quote subtype text blocks by using shift+enter.

Fixed an issue where GIFs added via GIF search were not properly centered in the beta post editor on web.
