I’m not sure when exactly this happened, but I think it’s clear that the aro community really is a community, now.
For the longest time I’ve felt like we were still in stasis, not quite there; a proto-community, yes, but not quite a community. But we have more history now to lean back on, more of each other to talk to and laugh with and cry with and learn from. More people that’ll go forward and make a part of modern aro history. More people that believe us, believe in us, will stand with us if we ask them.
I wouldn’t consider myself an aro elder yet, though each year I’m surprised at how long aromanticism has been a part of my life, how long I’ve been free of doubt or insecurity about my aromanticism, how far we’ve come since I was questioning. Then again, when I was questioning, some of the people I looked up to for guidance were probably close to the age I am now, so I might be there sooner than I think.
And, I’m so so hopeful for all aros, young or old, new or not, because we’ve come so far. Day by day, progress is slow (and yes, it’s unfair, it should be so much faster), but looking back it feels fast. We are our own role models, the people we look up to for guidance. We carve our own path through life, making things up as we go. I used to find that terrifying, because I had no idea what the future would bring. But it’s actually amazing, because I can ignore all these silly “rules” and guidelines about what my life should be, and instead ask, “what do I want my life to be?”
Younger me, you have no idea how awesome your future is gonna be. I’m sorry about the pain and hardship you’ll go through first; it won’t be fair and you shouldn’t have to deal with it. But you’ll make it through, and one day you’ll be me. I can’t wait for you to get here.
#aromantic#aro#aspec#queer#lgbtq#original#text#can't believe i was busy on a day when aromantic got super trending#also on the topic of history: history is super important and we should make sure we're good custodians of it!#make backups of your tumblr blogs/wordpress sites/fanfiction/analytical essays/whatever!#save links into the internet archive/wayback machine!#future aros will thank us for every thing we save from link rot#current aros will thank us for keeping our resources alive and accessible

if i had like, any free time, i would open google docs about it, but anyway my personal headcanon is that nicky probably does know that joe is in contact with booker; there's only really so many people he could be texting. also they've known each other for 900 years i imagine it's tough to meaningfully keep secrets. nicky never particularly seems surprised by it, the anger seems to come more from the fact that joe didn't tell him about it
#if i want to get extra analytical i would say that nicky's who are you texting is less an actual question if he does know and more of a bid#for joe to tell him about it. what he's still on about when they meet tuah is the lying part and less the booker part. iirc#anyway 10 mins til my shift starts#the old guard 2 spoilers#2 old 2 guard

finished murray mysteries! had a lovely time with it, the two bonus episodes in the last season were particularly delightful, the hold off on giving van helsing softness did pay off when she had a bit of breakdown while going to slaughter the girlies, and they really saved up the sound design for the last couple of episodes. I can't believe they adopted dracula's cat.

I'm sorry but no one is ever going to convince me that #justice prevails at the end of mdzs (even the untamed), everyone seems so freaking sad about the events that unfolded. no one is going to convince me that nhs actually found satisfaction in the way jgy & nmj are now forever just chilling in a coffin, no peace whatsoever. jgy was someone who genuinely cared for nhs and i feel it goes vice versa. Don't even get me started on Jin Ling, that child is devastated, and then having to have dealings with the man that was indirectly/directly involved with your uncles death and that even depends on if nhs picks up the slack as sect leader cause huan and jiggy were doing the work for him.
The watchtowers probably going to get disbanded, don't even know what's going on with the Nie clan, Jing lin being forced to play the role of leader so early on in his life. This was not triumphant it felt so very depressing, like damn.
i mean you're preaching to the choir here, anon, i'm in agreement with you. the only people who are happy after the guanyin temple sequence concludes are wangxian, and i think it is entirely reasonable to presume that a lot of their happiness in that moment is a direct result of getting to fuck nasty. 🤷♀️ good for them, i guess.
#sorry for not writing a big Thing in response anon i just think i'll be repeating myself#tl;dr the jianghu is worse off after jgy's death#jin ling is worse off after jgy's death#lxc is wayyyyy worse off after jgy's death (and i still think he doesn't survive post-canon in cql)#like... do i think we are *meant* to view the end of the story as being this bleak? no i don't#i don't think this was mxtx's intention when writing the novel#but authorial intent is only one piece of the analytical puzzle#and critical interpretations of the world state post-canon#(which are grounded in what the text actually shows us rather than The Vibes or extratextual commentary)#are equally as important. if not moreso tbh.#asks answered#mdzs meta

Poverty, poverty knock / Keeping one eye on the clock / I know I can guttle, when I hear my shuttle / Go poverty, poverty knock...
...so I read @nothwell's novel 'mr warren's profession' at approximately light speed the other day and felt like drawing some of the cast.
#em draws stuff#mr warren's profession#tagging l to r as usual#miss brewster#<- she doesn't even have a first name but she's a major character in my heart.#emmeline rook#lindsey althorp#aubrey warren#vibes on this one visually are '1890s from memory but other eras have crept in because that's not my usual setting'#and the backgrounds are scanned (text) and traced (flourishes) from 1893 newspapers from my college!#which is why I posted maybe ten different screenshots from old newspapers t'other day. They're Fun.#this was a rather interesting read for me because this is not at all my usual genre of choice as I am probably not the intended audience#(to wit: quite ace)#but also I've never really seen an author do this thorough a fictional portrayal of so many various threads of 19thc queerness before#it's a motivation like any other and I think that's executed very well! and also of course I Do like to hear in great detail about textiles#and mills and looms and analytical engines!!!#more commentary wrt choice of character... we have both My Very Favorites and also we have The Protagonists.#the protagonists oughtn't be forgotten despite my instant and known affection for a union-organiser in a flat cap#you know how it is with union-organisers in flat caps :]

I’ve seen you refer to it in usually a negative way in your posts sometimes but what is your personal stance on Hbomb’s patholgic video? Do you have any thoughts on the other popular pathologic videos or are they nothing of note positive or negative
haha, thanks for the ask. you're right, i probably do sound like i'm hating on it most of the time that i mention it.
but to be honest, i heard about pathologic for the first time by watching the hbomberguy video, and i'm not sure if i ever would have encountered the game if he hadn't made it! and i think it's a really interesting, well-made video.
i honestly think that my problems with the video have more to do with the fact that i got a little obsessed with the game and ended up knowing more about it than he does, rather than the video being inherently bad. it has a lot of inaccuracies, but if you take it as a subjective work that follows his personal experience playing the game, i'm okay with it.
(and i think this is something that can be applied to most of his videos, especially about media: i've realized that he often overemphasizes or downplays things to make a certain point. i remember thinking this about his fallout new vegas video, that he was making the game sound way more incredible than it actually is, speaking as a FNV fan myself. or his RWBY video, which i watched despite having never seen the show, and then encountered a RWBY fan in the wild who insisted that the video misrepresented the show. but again, i think this isn't necessarily a problem-- he's giving his own take, and trying to be entertaining.)
honestly, my biggest problem with the video is the end, where he basically tells people that they should just skip pathologic classic and go straight to P2, as if the two are interchangeable experiences and P2 is just the updated version. even if the other two routes had been added to P2 in a reasonable amount of time, which it seems like hbomb was expecting back when he made the video, artemy's story in P2 and classic are so different. they aren't interchangeable.
aside from that, i'm more frustrated by the impact that i feel the video had on the fanbase than anything (people not trying classic because he scared them off of it, fans who only watch his and other videos about the games without even trying to watch a lets play or something, people basing their preconceived notions about the characters on his jokey descriptions of them).
#asks#anonymous#i don't have much to say about other videos because i've watched very few...#i think i watched the intro segments to those ''pathologic for those who'll never play it'' videos?#they spend 30 minutes connecting the game to artaud in one and brecht in the other iirc. and those were really good!#and basically i'm sure plenty of the more analytical pathologic videos are worth watching to hear what they have to say#i just have a hard time watching videos sometimes because of my auditory processing issues. so i'd rather read their thoughts in text form!#pathologic

The Wreck never goes in to be maintained.
There are myriad reasons for this. First is that the doctor is easily described as a perfectionist; its creations would not leave the in-progress stage unless they met its standards absolutely. Thus, The Wreck is too well assured at a level of pristine quality to really need further maintenance, let alone regular work. Secondly, it doesn't get up to much that might yet damage it anyway. The last major interaction it had with anyone was shortly after its creation- there's not been much for it to do since then. And thirdly, the construction of The Wreck was very precise in order to properly contain the stuff that ended up inside it. Disturbing that construction would be fatal.
So the thing inside The Wreck is left to rust.
A human Soul doesn't power a robot the way a monster Soul might. The Wreck wasn't built for that, anyway- that was not the doctor's priority. But neither is a robot a very good, safe container for a human Soul. Which is why the thing inside The Wreck was stripped of the agency of human inevitability, to keep the other human thing alive & bloody, to power The Wreck. Now that thing bleeds DT so that The Wreck fails to rust.
(More than being a doctor or, even, an engineer, The Wreck's creator is an author. And in making that poor human thing follow his 3rd law, perhaps it's making a fellow author, Asimov, proud.)
#man. doatk is already fairly scifi thanks to g@ster* but the way i write it is damn near cyberpunk#*spelled that way to avoid detection in tumblr search#i actually didn't avoid writing his name in the text for that reason- it was just an artistic choice#but of course i acknowledge the utility of it too#doatk#hi i'm writing analytical microfiction about the wreck again#check the notes for a rb from me with author's commentary

I was thinking back to when I took my first career test in high school, which was one of those Choose A or B sort of tests that asked hard-hitting questions like: Coffee or Tea? Reading or Watching TV? Waking up early or Staying up late? I can't even remember any of the more career focused questions because I was so confused at how liking tea over coffee was going to help me determine a career path.
Anyway, I finished earlier than most of my classmates because I read fast and have a solid grasp on things I like and don't like, and I scored 50% Fine Arts and 50% Computer Science. Which, if you know literally anything about me, makes complete and total sense, but I guess if you're some lady hired to proctor these career tests it might seem odd to get such different results in equal measure.
Odd enough that she told me I had to take the whole thing again because I cheated and didn't answer the questions seriously. That the results I got were "impossible" unless I was clicking random things. So, I retook it, slower this time, and answered all the questions exactly the same the second time because I answered honestly the first time so it wasn't hard to repeat the process.
'Lo, and behold, I scored the same: 50% Fine Arts and 50% Computer Science and the lady was still miffed about it, but she didn't say anything the second time around. And I was still completely confused as to why she thought my results could be "wrong" because I was literally taking two different occupational electives that year: Computer Repair II and Computer Animation and it made perfect sense to me.
And sitting here, enjoying the first day of my summer break before my 5th year of teaching Digital Art, it still makes perfect sense to me.
#just text today lads#thinking back I was always getting half and half answers on personality tests#What do you mean it's weird to be extremely analytical and rules-focused AND need freedom of expression and spontaneity?#I'm almost always existing on the opposite ends of every spectrum at once#I like to think my opposing facets complement each other like colors on a wheel 🌈

i really don’t see how the fact that teenage girls often married adult men in shakespeare’s time must mean romeo was 17, because a huge part of the relationship was that it went against social expectations. they loved each other even though juliet was supposed to marry paris, even though their families hated each other, even though everyone tried to keep them apart. whatever the usual relationship dynamics were at the time would have had very little impact on them, their love existed outside of that. what their relationship did involve was love, respect, connection and understanding (their first conversation is a sonnet!! they are on equal ground and in sync from the moment they meet!!), which makes more sense if they are the same age.
#NOT saying this was shakespeare’s intention when writing it#just that there really isnt anything in the text or historical context to imply that he was older than juliet#and i think it makes perfect sense analytically for them to be the same age#romeo and juliet#romeo montague#shakespeare#willy shakes#r&j
