my 2 favorite things to draw......the devils nest and Face Shapes. this concept was made for me

under the cut is some rambling about the gang in an actual dungeon meshi au (ft Major Spoilers)

the chimeras would all still be beastmen obviously. every day i thank ryoko kui for my life for putting chimeras in her thing. roa and dolcetto i think would have been pit fighters as an equivalent to being soldiers, martels also ex military but i feel like "got blown up, woke up half snake" would translate well to getting fused with a monster in a dungeon. and then bido would have a more izutsumi type backstory

greed would have earned their loyalty somehow but im not fully settled on What his deal would be. like conceptually the original homunculus is very similar to a demon (weird mystery entity) (bound to serve) (eternally Craving) (trapped in a thing and wants out) but greed specifically is, like, a chill version that i dont think would want to eat peoples desires because he likes it when people have those. and i dont know if a Chill Demon is justifiable lore-wise. counterpoint though: he would really love having a fursona. tell me YOUR thoughts in the comments below i guess (or my askbox whatever)

If Greed does purr, the reason would likely to calm down and soothe chimeras. Purring also does have healing properties!

Thinking about this made me think about how the chimeras are capable of non-human things (like Martel's flexibility) but only to a certain point, it seems like. Like I doubt Dolcetto can literally bark like a dog... wouldn't it be so ironic if the homunculus could purr but a cat chimera working for him couldn't?? 😭😭

aw tysm <3 I definitely have way too many thoughts about them rotating in my head constantly, let's see what we can grab today

one of the things that I actually really like from 03 is Greed busting out the chimeras when he's breaking himself out of the lab, so even though it doesn't exactly line up with what we're given in mangahood canon i like to hc something similar having happened anyways! (gonna be a lil vague because this loops back to a fic I'm writing a bit) "guy who's been locked up for who knows how long and isn't all there mentally's first instinct being to save people when all he can think about is needing to get out" does something to me yk

the chimeras having different sorts of chronic pain issues from being experimented on is so real to me that I forget it's not canon. I will die on the hill that Dolcetto's arm bands are actually braces to support his wrists. Greed catches any of them overdoing it when they're having a bad pain day and he will personally drag them off to bed whether they're in the middle of a conversation or work or anything. This is regular taking care of your possessions behaviour and not him being worried about his friends thank you very much

Roa just has the Vibes that he does most of the cooking for their group, but Greed definitely does quite a bit too (mostly when he can use excuses like "I'm the only one who can't get sick so I might as well be the one to make food" when there's something going around, or "Well I made this for Me because I need to eat all the finest things but I happened to make enough for everyone and being greedy means not letting things go to waste so you better have some" -guy who won't admit to himself or anyone else that everything he wants for himself is for them too)

Dolcetto being the main bouncer! most people would probably expect it to be Roa or Ulchi but he's a damn good guard dog thank you (being able to smoke more because he's outside the entrance is a bonus too) I don't have too specific hc's for what most of the others do during working hours other than Martel working the bar, but I kinda see Ulchi as dealing with fights that break out inside when he's not part of them himself (Roa helps with those ones it's ok)

FUNKY LITTLE BALD CHARACTER POLL ROUND FIVE: GROUP TWO

the union isn't the only team that's survived by banding together. four bald old men (okay, three old, one nebulously middle-aged) have persevered throughout the rounds where other old men have failed-- even narrowly evading defeat at the hands of old man mcgucket-- and forged a friendship so strong it's given them all BEAM ATTACKS. but their opponents are formidable in their own right. the iterators have swept every one of their polls by at least 17% of the votes, managing to thrash avatar aang himself, without having to use their special ability even once.

it may be their last chance. their SUPERSTRUCTURES are struggling to process five rounds' worth of data. if this poll, somehow, gets at least three hundred votes more than either of the other two in this round, and the iterators have lost the match, a tie will be called instead!

meanwhile, the BALD BEAM... hasn't grown any more powerful, because wallace's clay head isn't very shiny, but just like last round, if the old man brigade gets within 8% of the iterators, the dazzling display will overload the robots' optical sensors, also forcing a tie!

"Devil's Corkscrews," Niobrara River, Nebraska, USA,

In the late 1800s, a remarkable fossil discovery in what is now northwestern Nebraska captured the imagination of scientists and sparked decades of research.

At the Agate Springs quarries, paleontologists unearthed something entirely unexpected—giant, spiral-shaped fossil structures buried deep underground. These mysterious formations, often several feet tall and coiled like ancient tree trunks, were unlike anything seen before. Their peculiar shape and massive size puzzled researchers for years. What could they be?

Initially dubbed “devil’s corkscrews,” these structures were thought to be the fossilized roots of ancient trees or even the remains of giant freshwater sponges. But as investigations continued, a more grounded explanation emerged.

Scientists eventually determined that these spirals were actually burrows—complex underground dens created by an extinct genus of land-dwelling beavers known as Palaeocastor.

The construction of spiral burrows required more effort from paleocastorines than digging straight inclined passages of the same length. Among the reasons that led burrowing beavers to this form is their territorial crowding: in conditions of large colonies, straight burrows should have often intersected.

According to another assumption, the unusual shape of the burrows was a response to the hot and dry climate of that era. From this point of view, its spiral design could have been a kind of air conditioning system for maintaining an optimal temperature and humidity regime inside the nesting chamber, which was especially important for the successful breeding of offspring.

Today, the “devil’s corkscrews” remain one of North America’s most fascinating and bizarre fossil discoveries—a testament to the strange and adaptive behavior of prehistoric life, preserved in stone beneath the Nebraska prairie.
