Ask Box Dump
Some of these are literally 8 months old whoooops. Sorry!!!!! but we get there!!
whatasmoothgardener asked:
Also reccing trying out Girls Last Tour, a manga/anime by the mangaka of Shimeji Simulation that follows two girls as they explore the deserted post-apocalyptic megacity they live in. Mainly focuses on the two girls and them contemplating the world, both in a literal sense and a more abstract sense. The anime adaptation is pretty good but for some reason didn't adapt the ending so if you go with the anime I very much rec reading where it left off.
whatasmoothgardener asked:
Reccing another underrated manga for this blog called Hakumei and Mikochi about the daily lives of two women roommates in a world where people are only a few inches tall and coexist with talking animals. A rather laidback manga but I think the art and the worldbuilding really shine through. There is an anime and while its an okay adaptation I rec the manga since you really miss out on the WHA-level art of the comic if you watch only the anime.
whatasmoothgardener asked:
Suggesting more anime. Humanity has Declined is an fantasy-comedy post apocalypse anime focusing on the mediator between humankind and fairies and the strange things that happen to her due to the local fairies. The episodes are in Anachronic Order. I can only speak for the anime here as I haven't read the light novels nor the manga.
whatasmoothgardener asked:
Reccing another anime. Pani Poni Dash is a Gag Anime about Japanese highschoolers and their new teacher Rebecca, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who happens to only be 10 years old. Most of the cast is female. I don't remember there being a lot of fanservice in this but it's been a while since I've watched it. Has a manga I've yet to read.
@whatasmoothgardener
Girls last tour I've heard of before and it's already on the list! I don't know a ton about it but I think it's one I definitely want to get to at some point. hakumei and mikochi is 100% new to me and I'm not really into this character art style but these backgrounds are gorgeous. I always love some interesting worldbuilding and that + nice art are definitely enough to be worth my time. Humanity has declined has some nice looking colors there which is tasty to me. added to the list! Pani Poni dash I think i'll skip on because gag franchises in general are lower priority and with a list that is getting close to 200 titles long i gotta pick where to put my time.
astracetus asked:
Misericorde! It's a visual novel in which a nun is murdered in a secluded abbey. If you like murder mysteries and women, you will like it I hope. The cast is almost all female, and the quality of the characters is through the roof.
@astracetus
this one is a big name in the flower that bloomed nowhere server, which is a great place for Bizarre Women Media recs so I added it to my list after seeing it there! this is one im sure im going to play at some point and im really looking forward to it
Anonymous asked:
popping in to drop a rec for dykette by jenny fran davis which was an indescribable reading experience. almost definitely the most insane lesbian drama i have ever read about…it’s contemporary litfic (?) but is also just. extremely absurd. the worst person you know CAN be a lesbian
I have yet to come across a piece of contemporary litfic I like, but to be honest that's not a huge point against it... the less i'm into any particular genre the more i feel kind of compelled to look for the exception that proves the rule. however i will say that reading about rich new yorkers is not my idea of a good time nor do i really get a lot of enjoyment out of stuff that talks about "queer nonconformity". in general, the more times the word queer is used to describe something the less likely it is to resonate with me lol. the 2.9 goodreads rating compels me a little bit... goodreads reviewers are insane so a complete mixed bag/middle of the road set of reviews means this could really land anywhere for me. i will put it on the list but probably wont be getting to this one any time in the near future
Anonymous asked:
I’d like to recommend ShootAround by suspu on webtoon! It’s about a highschool girls basketball team trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. It’s mostly a comedy, but does have more serious moments.
"high school" "zombie apocalypse" and "webtoon" are three keywords for a piece of media to have that, on their own are pretty offputting to me, but in conjunction with each other i think are dealbreakers. going to skip on this one sorry!
dilsdoes asked:
i dont know if youre still looking for recommendations but i have 2 podcasts, if thats a medium youre interested in
>girl in space: a girl is alone on a space station orbiting a star when something approaches. i think the protagonist is pretty well written. a second season is in the works, but its been in the works for a while now.
>we fix space junk: a smuggler and an ex heiress work as repairwomen for a conglomerate that basically owns them. theres also a mini series focusing on another female character from the series, but going into that would be a spoiler. i dont know what the status of this one is.
@dilsdoes
we fix space junk is on the list! narrative podcasts i tend to fall off of pretty hard for reasons i'm not entirely sure of, but that said i am open to them. added girl in space
Anonymous asked:
Don't know if you still take recs and this is a bit out of left field but I'm three books into the Blackwater series by Michael McDowell and I think you would apreciate the female characters. The blur: with a flood that devastated the village of Perdido, Alabama, appears a misterious woman, who intricates herself into the very wealthy Caskey family. And the pitch is that Elinor Dammert is a flesh eating monster, evil and manipulative and I can't help but root for her 🤍
Looking for stuff that's a bit out of left field is half of the point of looking for recs! I hope her being a flesh eating monster is part of the premise rather than a big spoiler because i would really really prefer people don't send spoilers in their recommendations. but it sounds interesting! added to the list.
Anonymous asked:
I want to recommend the manga series "JK Haru is a Sex Worker in Another World," about a girl who gets isekaied into an extremely misogynistic fantasy world and becomes a sex worker for survival. I think the series has a lot to say about the role of women in that genre and irl. It is also genuinely quite funny, if dark and featuring explicit sex scenes - if this is something youre willing to check out I'd be really interested in hearing what you think about it.
explicit sexual content is completely fine by me. i'm less sure if im interested in Commentary on isekai as a genre because it's not a genre i have a ton of interest in or experience with so deconstructing the misogyny therein just might not really hold much appeal for me. will put it on the list nonetheless!
anon704580 asked:
you gotta read shimeji simulation and girls last tour. peak yuris
@anon704580
both on the list already! im sure ill get to one or the other at the very least
taisorato asked:
Is Orphan Black on your radar? I'm not sure if I'm really recommending it because it has a lot of racist pitfalls that f/f media (especially Canadian media) of that era just do but it is certainly A Show that can entertain.
@taisorato
I watched orphan black when it was airing! im not sure if i ever finished it, and that was like ten years ago at this point so i dont really remember most of it or have complicated feelings on it. but regardless of anything else you could say about this show tatiana maslany's performance was fucking increeeeedible. there were so many times in this show when i forgot these were all the same woman doing this. i would need to rewatch this one in order to meaningfully recommend it or not so i think ill just stick it in the graveyard as unfinished for now
Anonymous asked:
i'd like to rec Nevermore (webtoon). two women (brash goth & conniving prep) awake on the shores of a misty island with no memories except a feeling that they're important to each other. they find themselves whisked into an ""academy"" (thinly veiled setting for death games) for the recently deceased, and the last one standing gets a second chance at life. they're both immediately embroiled in the interpersonal politics of Fake High School on opposing "sides" but are def in yuri anyways
already on the list!
notarealcarrot asked:
Hello this ask is here to add Tactical Breach Wizards to the pile of media you should check out.
@notarealcarrot
Looks cool. Added to the list!
Anonymous asked:
idk if it's your speed, but have you read claymore?
@snarp has been telling me to read claymore for awhile now so its already on the list and legally i do have to read it
Anonymous asked:
Has anyone recommended the Children of Time trilogy to you yet? Doctor Avrana Kern is inarguably a woman of all time
They have not! added to the list.
lattedecoffee asked:
While the games I am about to talk about have male protagonists, their female characters are some of my favorites in media. They are also all written by Kotaro Uchikoshi, which is why I’m putting these in the same ask.
The whole Zero Escape Trilogy is a great time, but I’m going to focus on the first game, 9 Person 9 Hours 9 Doors here. There are 9 people and you have 9 hours to get out of here through the door with a 9 on it. Behind every numbered door is a point and click escape room the player must solve, but depending on the doors you pick the story will change. There are only 2 required endings to get the full experience but all 5 are worthwhile.
As for female characters, we have 3 in our main cast: Clover, June, and Lotus. Each appears to be a very specific archetype of character (Clover is the young naïve one, June is the childhood best friend, Lotus is the hot sassy one), and the male characters also seem simplistic at first glance. Yet as the story progresses you learn more about these characters and find some of amazing writing. Most of the details would be spoilers but I will say I expected June to be my least favorite member of the cast and she quickly became one of my favorite characters in anything. Clover isn’t as naïve as she first appears, and Lotus’ character went places I didn’t expect but make me love her more.
AI: The Somnium Files (it has a sequel but I’ll focus on just the first) is a much more recent Uchikoshi game. Many elements of Zero Escape feel like prototypes for elements of AITSF (eg. AITSF’s protagonist Date and VLR’s protagonist Sigma have similar personalities but Date ends up being much more likable whereas Sigma has his annoying side and his “oh shit plot is happening” side), but that’s a ramble for somewhere else.
As for female characters, oh my god where would I even start. Mizuki Okiura is a 12yo girl, but she’s also going through some incredibly traumatic stuff. She’s easily one of my favorite child characters alongside original trilogy Pearl Fey. Boss is a character who seems to be, like Lotus, just hot and sassy, but why is she hiding so much?
And the mothers in AITSF, oh my god the mothers. Hitomi Sagan and Mayumi Matsushira make me love each of their children more because of how much they care about them. And yet they aren’t reduced to “mother of X,” they have their own things going on that most parent characters would never get.
I could keep going but damn this is getting long. If you want me to elaborate on something specific I can :)
@lattedcoffee
I've already been through all of the zero escape and somnium file games! i really love aitsf and 999 but ultimately i don't think they're the right fit to recommend for this blog. mizuki and akane in particular i do think are fantastic but ultimately i dont think either game is a right fit to recommend for this blog. kotaro uchikoshi has a complicated relationship with misogyny to say the least. it's a very nebulous line to draw but ultimately the question i ask for whether or not something belongs here is not 'would i recommend this thing that has good female characters' but 'would i recommend this thing specifically because of how the female characters are handled' and i think 999/aitsf are firmly in the former category rather than the latter.
OKAY i think thats all the ask answering i have in me for today. whew. still more than 70 messages in my inbox but it was over 90 when i started so ill consider that a win for now. ty all for the recs!

Pani Poni Dash!
ぱにぽにだっしゅ!
(Anime)
Slice of life/parody by Hekiru Hikawa
Era: 2000s
Rating: C
Plot: Class 1-C at the Momotsuki Academy suddenly needs a new homeroom teacher. MIT graduate Rebecca Miyamoto is hired for the position, but there's two problems: the class is filled with oddballs, and while she might be the youngest MIT graduate ever, is still 11.
Length: 24+1 episodes
Thoughts: Uh, when I started watching Nichijou, for some reason I thought Hakase was going to be their teacher. Guess I mixed it up with Pani Poni Dash! here because at a point they were together in the watching queue on the list I keep of shows I've seen and wrote about here. Well, it's not any sort of slight to it, it came to my attention via YouTube recommendations after watching Lucky Star, Nichijou, Asobi Asobase and Azumanga Daioh videos, so at least we know that part of the internet still works. Sometimes. Or worked, who knows how things are when you are reading this. It also might make it harder to evaluate it for what it is, considering those four are rated very highly, and only Azumanga Daioh predates it, so let's try to stop name dropping for a bit.
This is basically a sketch show with little continuity and some Excel Saga style jokes (Shaft produced some episodes for the adaptation), around Rebecca (who got the nickname "Becky" even before setting a foot on the classroom, because she overslept) being a terrible teacher, belittling her students at every opportunity, who in turn bully her back... and since she's just 11, starts crying and hides behind a curtain. She can be their teacher but they're still the "grown up kids", after all. Not that she has any luck with the actual grownups - his colleagues, like Ms Igarashi, a teacher so disillusioned with her career she appears late and drunk to class, are quick to take advantage of her naivety. Other jokes involve Mesousa, Rebecca's rabbit companion with no thumbs, a permanent depressed face and luck to match, particularly their interactions with Lord Cat, Miyako's increasingly blinding forehead, Himeko's cowlick powered energy, Serizawa's disguises, or Kurumi, a girl so unremarkable people literally forget about her when she's in front of them. All this with aliens observing humanity, who picked Rebecca to study, even failing the "not interfere" part often. There's also tons of visual gags, like stage crew getting inside the frame, or the rooms being presented as a stage, lighting included, faces replaced with kaomoji or Misao getting a frame of roses that follow her face like a romance anime, much more evident when the camera is pulled back.
Going back to the four shows I've mentioned before, it's kind of a problem to know how to evaluate Pani Poni Dash! as... watching it after them, it just doesn't feel it is as good. Is it because the material is weaker and the animation more basic (particularly compared to Nichijou and Asobi Asobase, who have 6 and 13 years of improved digital animation skill and technology on it), or because the mix - school classes filled with odd students in odd situations, the childish kid prodigy, pop culture references - was improved over the years by other shows? Best I can probably say is that if you like any of those shows, you'll probably find at least some enjoyment here as well, at least until it starts getting a bit boring - wish I could say "yeah, it has its problems but at least it doesn't get boring", but that's not the case. However, if you find yourself losing interest, at least skip to the last three episodes.
Recommended to: fans of odd girls in odd situations.
Plus:
It kind of hits the same spots as other shows in the genre
The intros are incredible to look at. I mean, look!
Minus:
Can't help but feel other shows did this better...
... and also with a lot less fan-service
Maybe too large of a cast

An Itinerary For Spending A Day In Bangalore
Bangalore is a centre for practically anything you want to try. It’s a destination for all types of travellers, whether they are extravagant or backpackers, religious or party animals. You can discover folks here who share your interests no matter what they are. In fact, there are organizations, gatherings, and groups for every imaginable interest. That makes up for the city’s best feature: its inhabitants are curious, active, and supportive of one another. So, while you prepare for your vacation to Bangalore, we’ll help you discover everything the city has to offer.
Walk around Cubbon Park
This is the best way to begin your day. Get there early in the morning, and take a stroll around the park around 6:00 to 6:30 am. Wander past the enormous Vidhana Soudha, the dancing and melodic fountain dome, and the rose garden. And, if you’re a dog lover, you could always visit the Dog Park that is open on Sundays from 7.30 am onwards. Once you’re done, you can head towards having your breakfast.
Visit the Visveswaraya Museum
This can be your next destination. Another walker-friendly location close to Cubbon Park, this one is ideal for a couple of hours of exploration. The Government Museum, Aquarium, Venkatappa Art Gallery, and Lalbagh Botanical Garden are further nearby attractions worth seeing.
Stroll the Church Street
You can then move on to the Church Street, the perfect hangout spot for art and book lovers! This is a must-visit destination for those who enjoy arts, as it is home to a wide range of art galleries, museums, cafes, and bookstores that provide a distinctive and varied experience. The several galleries on Church Street offer a wide variety of art genres, from modern art to traditional Indian art, for those who like the visual arts. The street is also a book lover’s heaven, with a number of bookstores selling a wide range of books in many genres, from bestsellers to rare and difficult-to-find titles.
Shop at Commercial Street
The Commercial Street should be your next stop if you love to shop. This area proves to be a shopping lover’s heaven and offers you some retail therapy while you take in the busy activity all around you. Almost anything can be purchased here, including clothing, jewellery, cosmetics, clutches, handbags, shoes, home décor items, dinnerware, and much more. After you’ve had your fill of finding the best deals and navigating the odd shops dotting the narrow passageways, you can visit one of the many restaurants on Commercial Street itself for a range of street food options. Some of the delectable delicacies you can try a bite of include South Indian variety, sandwiches, pani puris, bhel puris, bhajiyas, frankies, Mangalore buns, and jalebis.
Visit popular attractions
The National Gallery of Modern Art, Bengaluru Palace, The MadLabs, Snow City, and HAL Heritage Centre and Aerospace Museum are just a few of the top attractions in the city that you can visit after filling up on delicious snacks and meals. Other top attractions include Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, and Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain Park.
Enjoy yourself at the malls
You can choose to visit one or all of the aforementioned locations during the day. Following your tour to the city’s well-known attractions, you can continue on to explore its amazing malls. Two of the best malls you may visit are Orion Mall and Mantri Square Mall. The malls provide a variety of leisure options, such as air hockey, basketball, bowling, arcade games, horror houses, and numerous more activity and adventure activities. You might perhaps indulge in a restorative spa treatment or watch a movie at the mall to satiate your cinema bug.
Dine and sleep
It’s time to go to bed after all your fun! So, take a drive to one of the area’s top hotels and reserve a room for one night. One of the best options is the Kingston Hotel, one of the most renowned hotels in Peenya, which is only a short drive from any of the malls you’ve visited. The finest selection of air-conditioned rooms with the nicest views of Bangalore are available for booking here. With the most up-to-date amenities, cosy mattresses, spotless bathrooms, high-speed wi-fi, television, and lots more, you may have the nicest stays here. Additionally, there is a pure vegetarian restaurant nearby that serves delicious Indian, Chinese, and continental food. Here, you can treat your taste buds to a delectable dinner and retire to one of your most luxurious accommodations. You’ll be welcomed with a free breakfast buffet in the morning, and you may easily check out the following day at any time before 12 o’clock without any difficulties or haste.
So here’s a one-day itinerary for your visit to Bangalore. However, you can also spend an additional day or two exploring other incredible locations within 50 kilometres of Bangalore if you have time on hand, some of which are Wonder La, Dodda Alada Mara, Thottikallu Falls, Innovative Film City, and Grover’s Vineyard.

Soft-Launching Myself with a Dev Diary No One Asked For
Author: panychu
The beginning of an adventure
Hi everyone!
Today, I will be humbly sharing a passion project I've been quietly developing for quite some time now. It's ambitious, full of heart, and still updating in real time.
Me!
(Also known as Pany.)
In this personal little dev diary, we'll be going through everything from soft skills, community magic, creative passion and a strong desire to be part of something meaningful. And while it does feel a little weird writing about myself like I'm a game update, I promise it'll be worth it if you bear with me and the quirkiness…
I've been following Envar for years. Not just passively lurking, but actively following, being stunned by League splash arts, environment art and concepts - and that signature visual storytelling that had me stuck in the League shop and practice tool for hours, just admiring the craft.
I felt genuinely hyped beyond belief when I found out you were building something of your own - and maybe it's because I'm an artist myself, but from my perspective it just makes sense as the next step. The art and stories you're capable of creating, deserve a world of their own.
That's a world I'd love to bring people closer to, with the kind of voice you instantly recognize. One that remembers usernames, follows up on feedback, and creates magical room for co-creation between developers and fans.
So here I am - with a whole lot of ideas, and experience shaped right at the heart of internet culture, among the kind of people who'd be first in line to play a game like yours.
Lore and all that good stuff!
Every hero's journey starts somewhere. Mine started… on deviantArt. It was the first platform that was my serious taste in creating a community, and maybe the purest experience of what it feels like when it's based around creativity, genuine engagement and unapologetic nerdiness.
So, while my Naruto-phase isn't my most sophisticated era, I do feel something close to pride (cringe-flavored pride, but pride nonetheless) when I think about 12-year-old me hosting massive forum-based art and fanfiction contests for hundreds of users - all fueled by pure passion and a very questionable understanding of HTML. It was my first taste of building and managing a community that was growing fast and big, escalating into character-driven ask-blogs, fan-discussions that led to many comics being created, and funny video edits.
The journey has since then been anything but linear, and I've come to accept that is the result of a deep seated curiosity. In life, I've gathered a wide range of experiences from studying psychiatry, philosophy and rhetoric at university, switching to art school and diving into my passion for animation, and also working with event management and content creation professionally.
That Naruto-loving, forum-post-editing kid turned into someone who still thrives at creating spaces for people to connect in new ways like moderating Discord servers, organizing events online and offline, and creating things that get people engaged.
If there's one lesson I keep learning, it's this: Magic happens when people connect, and create together.
Game features: Pany's Core Mechanics
I haven't shipped any big game titles but I do still think Pany v. 27 is going to be a great fit as your Community Manager, based on her current stats and features.
Content Creation & Community building: I worked professionally with YouTube on the big channels DunderHumor & ThunderHumor - doing voice acting, live-streaming, content-creation, illustration and animation in projects, collaborating with companies like Disney and Partykungen. I was very active setting up livestreams and connecting with fans live, in comment sections, and on-site events. Right now I'm an intern at Dataspelsbranschen and Game Town in Stockholm as a community manager and event orginizer. It's a place where I've felt incredibly at home, in a community of ambitious game developers and creatives.
Writing, speaking and Creativity: Communication has always been my strong suit (and somehow my internet slang hasn't ruined it yet) and I know how to put both passion and clarity into getting people engaged with both voice and words. With a deep appreciation and understanding for the storytelling craft across inspiring games, animation and in content creation. With strong art fundamentals, animation knowledge and design skills, I can independently provide extra "visual" spice to any content, in a way that looks professional and feels well in-tune with internet culture.
Creative Leadership: I've directed and production managed several animated projects, acted as a very active class representative in each class I've been in, and coordinated events online and offline. I co-founded an indie animation studio, where I've hosted animation jams with talented creators, and today we're producing a teaser for a little YouTube series that's already started building a following, even pre-announcement. I'm organized, social and agile in how I work, especially when I lead teams.
Event Management: In my home-town Uppsala, I felt so frustrated about how hard it was to connect with fellow nerds, so I started a convention called "Continue". I created a lively community, built and managed a team and brand around it that became a huge success, with events held every quarter. Later, I have also worked as a main organizer at Scandinavias biggest Con - Närcon - for several years. I was responsible for guests, politicians, panelists and speakers as well as coming up with and hosting activities on stage, like Q&A sessions and panels.
You get all of this in the latest patch, and a little more of course!
Pany v.27 Bonus Stats Highlights:
-10% Nerf: Thinking too much about Sonic the Hedgehog. +20% Buffed: Art skills. Passive ability: Really really really fast typer. Active ability: Master of engaging in discussion about basically anything. ∞ Passion for roleplaying and writing stories. Special Move 1: Editing EVERYTHING into video montages. Special Move 2: Can sound like an actual seagull.
Tumblr media
Next steps on the journey
So, I'm a certified (paradoxically extroverted) internet gremlin, incurable creative, and community-building enthusiast raised on fandom forums and huge conventions. You know the tip of the Pany v.27 iceberg now… but what would I actually do as your Community Manager? Let's talk about my quests.
Since Envar's new game is still under wraps, that means building up a community ground up. And just like building a game from an idea, there's infinite creative potential.
With consistency and devotion, something classic like - for example - a Dev Diary can become iconic, for one community and game in particular. Updates, social media content and streams can be so much more than just patch notes, memes and Q&A's. I'd love to turn them into something fun that feels personal, truly coming from the team at Envar. A serialized dev diary that's more like a show than a blog, streams where the community create silly game-character tierlists together, or maybe a short-format series for social media where each dev gets a little introduction episode (complete with doodles, inside jokes, and mysterious lore crumbs in the margins).
In my experience, community culture can't be forced, and that's exactly what makes it great. It's something that builds itself while you set the tone. If you're good at seeing, listening, and if you can leave room for the unexpected while adapting to it, you get a lively, evolving and engaged community.
Not just a following - a culture. One that grows right alongside the world you're building.
Thanks for reading!
Thanks so much for reading this chaotic little dev diary. It's a special one, as it's written just for you guys at Envar, and comes straight from the heart (or the kokoro as one might say, if they were secretly a Naruto fan, still).
Maybe this wasn't the flashiest launch, but honestly, the best updates are the ones the devs don't let you see coming.
If you're looking for someone who's all in - quirks, dedication, kokoro and all - I really hope I get the chance to meet you, and help build something wonderful together.
// Pany (Now available in v.27 — patches incoming!)

What do you think of the colourful representation of Sensui's personalities in the anime? Kazuya = Red, Makoto = Orange, Hitoshi = Yellow, Naru = Green, Minoru = Light green or purple, George = Light Blue, Shinobu = Purple or Black.
Anyway, sorry for late reply because I've seen this one for a while but didn't stay on social media long enough to answer properly. Last month was messy.
This is a really nice question but it was hard-to-answer for my lame reasons, so excuse me for somewhat irrelevant answers…
Honestly, I still don't remember what exact colors all Sensui alters have in the anime, obviously because my attention while watching anime sucks but also because the theme colors for them were all over the place. The descriptions on fandom Wiki are also hard to follow when I look at the pictures. For example, from the description in comparison to the image, Makoto is the one with his eyes closed so he's yellow and Hitoshi is orange or green. I'm not even sure if I'm using the wrong picture here but it's easier to just stick to this one because the colors are kinda random.
Tumblr media
(Good lord, Sensui's face in the anime really looks like a bicycle saddle. Actually, since I read that comment, I can't leave the comparison out of my mind because it's so accurate.)
Unrelated but the description of Sensui's alters on a Korean site also marks them with different colors from the English fandom Wiki. By the way, I like how they describe Hitoshi as the personality closest to Sensui's childhood, because I also think the same. I'm not sure if George is excluded from the fighting group though, because he was included as one of the 3 combat alters but not sure at what role.
Also, I don't have anything to comment but I'll add this card here because I also kinda like the color choices here, also because of how the faces are drawn (in which Sensui doesn't look like he needs IV drip).
Tumblr media
Super irrelevant colors.
Tumblr media
_
So, my impressions are:
Shinobu:
It's interesting how Shinobu's color is black because black was used to represent the water element in wuxing. Out of boredom, I check Sensui's feng shui for fun because black and water reminds me of wu xing, haha.
In Hinduism, there's also a taboo called kala pani (which means black water) that suggests crossing the seas to foreign lands causes the loss of one's social respectability, as well as the putrefaction of one’s cultural character and posterity (it's ironic looking from Sensui's context).
There's a duality in Indian history, that black water relates to rituals aimed at dispelling evil and misfortunes, encompassing funeral rites, while also symbolizing pollution and decay through its visual imagery, highlighting cultural associations with death and purification.
Irrelevant but anime Sensui was also somewhat ‘white’ when he was “driven snow” and “white paper” as described by Itsuki. The contrast is interesting.
Minoru:
Also, there's an idea that among the alters, Minoru resembled Itsuki the most because he learned manipulation from Itsuki, and he was also the most similar to Shinobu within the system. Back then, archaic Chinese didn't make a blue-green distinction but used the word 青 (which was also used to describe black-ish color), so it’s a fun way to associate the symbolisms (well, at least my delusional symbolisms).
In color psychology, blue can also represent intelligence, reliability, calmness so it's kinda suitable.
Kazuya:
Red represents blood, violence, anger, danger, passion,… I don't think any other color is more suitable for him than red, but then in my culture, it also means prosperity and good luck and - of course - Santa Claus and communism… Was he a communist in a way that he sent everyone to the gulag equally and indiscriminately hahaha?
.
Naru:
I can't even tell between orange and green, who is Naru. Good lord, maybe orange because green makes more sense with Hitoshi’s nature-loving personality? Both don't match her description in color psychology anyway.
This is super random but I like the combination of green for Naru and red for Kazuya because together they look like the upward and downward trends. Green and red are in opposite positions on the color wheel, and I tend to assume Naru is the opposite of Kazuya as well as was developed to balance him. Still, orange seems more likely to be the color because there's another reason why Hitoshi is green.
For the card, I like how her color is pink (cute). It's easier to identify Naru when she's pink, heh.
George:
I don't know if purple is George, but purple represents loyalty both in the Japan and the West while George means ‘farmer’. It's funnily ironic and I can't add any comment.
Makoto:
Yellow is also a positive color. It can represent royalty as in the past, Chinese emperors wore yellow. It's also associated with courage, opposite from the  West where it's associated with cowardice. Honestly, I don't know what to comment about it either.
Hitoshi:
Well, green represents nature but it also represents jealousy. I associate Hitoshi with envy before but never actually thought this far until I have to figure out the colors in anime…
_
Anyway, sorry but I tried. I'm really no good with colors as symbolisms.

A Local Delicacy
or the fic where hobie stares at pav and misses all the vital information
(please pay attention to the tags ✨✨ no cw's for this one)
"Wha's this thing called again?" Hobie frowned at the small, inflated crisp looking thing.
'It's called a Pani Puri, stop being so difficult," Pav reached up to hit him on the head, failing not so miserably. Hobie wanted to laugh at his disgruntled face. It had been a hot minute since they had hung out. Plus, Miles could probably use a break after the entire 'destabilising the multiverse' debacle. Pav had immediately dragged them to a nearby stall stacked to the top of the colourful umbrella with these Pani Puris, while blabbering non stop about foot traffic.
Hobie supposed some things transcend universes. Like crowds. Stray animals in narrow alleyways. Rude people. Rude cops. His crush on Pav. Capitalism. You get it. Hobie was broken out of his thoughts by the stall keeper handing him a tiny leaf cup. It was 5 centimetres at most.
"What are these for?" Gwen asked.
Pav smiled. Hobie's heart skipped a beat. "For eating. You'll see." He answered cryptically.
"Thoda time lagega beta, abhi kate pyaaz khatam hogaye," The stall keeper started chopping onions at the speed of light, his knife clacking against the ratty wooden board.
"Koi nahi kaka, aap aaram se karo," Pav bounced on the balls of his feet, replying to whatever the stall keeper said, in his sweet voice. Hobie loved when Pav spoke Hindi, there was something so flowy about it.
"What did he say?" Miles asked. Hobie was curious too. He only caught the heavily accented 'time'.
"He said it's gonna take a few mins, he just ran out of onions."
"That cutting board does not look hygienic," Gwen said, as Pav manoeuvered everyone to stand in a loose circle around the vendor.
"Arey bahut saaf hai beta! Very hygienic!" The stall keeper nodded at her, now chopping coriander. Gwen went red. Miles burst out laughing.
Pav looked embarrassed as well, and Hobie wanted to just. Hold him. He'd settle for standing close to him as he tried to sputter out something.
"Bura mat manna kaka, aapko pata hai yeh videshi log kaise hote hain." Pav scratched his neck, flashing a winning smile at the vendor and Hobie felt something stab in his heart.
"Chalega chalega, badi hi gori dikh rahi hai, pata chal gaya yahan se nahi hai." The stall keeper said while arranging the dishes around. "Uske liye kam tikha dun?"
"Gwen, do you like spicy food? Miles?" Pav asked.
"Nope." said Gwen as Miles nodded.
"What about you, Hobie?" Pav turned to him, his deep brown eyes glinting something pretty in the late afternoon light.
"Sure, why no'." Hobie shrugged, a grin inexplicably tugging at his lips. Pav turned back to the man, saying stuff in lilting tones Hobie didn't understand.
The stall keeper nodded, and cracked open one of the crisps, scooping peas and potatoes inside it and adding the green liquid and onions inside it. He swiftly placed it in Hobie's cup.
"Tha's it?" Hobie was unimpressed. This little thing?
"No, bro, you gotta eat it to get more. Put it in your mouth all at once. Don't nibble at it, or it'll get soggy and get all over your clothes." Pav said, entirely shoving his own Pani Puri into his mouth like a visual example of what to do. Hobie looked at the Pani Puri in his cup for half a second more before deciding to fuck it and copied Pav, mouth closing over the stuffed crisp.
Flavours exploded on his tongue. The sweet tanginess, the crunchy onions and the spicy peas; it was nothing Hobie had expected it to taste like and nothing like anything he had eaten in his life. He chewed, feeling the bits of the crisp puri poking all around his mouth, but that was the experience. It felt otherworldly yet somehow fulfilling. Hobie automatically extended his hand for another one.
Gwen got hers, stuffing it in her mouth, with no small amount of trepidation visible on her face. It was valid, considering she started coughing the moment she chewed it, going 'hoff, hoff, hoff!' which Hobie took to mean 'hot, hot, hot!'.
"Goddamnit Gwen, how are you gonna eat dinner with us?" Miles said easily eating the puri without breaking a sweat, his Puerto Rican taste buds used to the level of spice.
Gwen glared at him, face red and sweat dripping. "Can't you cook unspicy food for me?"
"Mami will never let you in again if you eat like a white person,"
"I am white."
"Yeah, and?"
"Hooo- kaay! Calm down children! Gwen, we can go get a kulfi for you later. Miles, stop antagonising Gwen," Pav made a 'chop' gesture at them, shaking his head frantically.
The vendor had plopped another one in his cup and was holding another one in his hand waiting for them to finish bickering. Hobie ate it, only a few drops of the green liquid spilling on his fingers. And the next one as well. And the next one. This street vendor was so fast, the fuck? With only Pav and him at the stall, because Miles was busy with Gwen, the vendor seemed to make three for each one Hobie ate. Pav didn't look bothered at all, scarfing down every one as it came.
"'oly shit, Pavi, ask 'im to slow down, 'M strugglin' 'ere, mate," Hobie managed to speak in between the positive barrage of puris.
"No way, it's part of the vibe, dude, keep up," Pav was way more graceful, easily talking between the Puris, time seeming to favour him and him only.
"Seriously?" Hobie muttered on the tailend of a particularly large Pani Puri. Pav grinned again, his right canine getting caught on his own lip. Hobie was well aware that he had a staring problem, and if he didn't get himself together, Pav will be too.
"Okay, okay," Sometimes Pav looked at Hobie in a way that had him swearing his feelings were requited, and this was one of those looks that made Hobie wonder how he's still standing up straight and not a puddle on the floor like he felt on the inside. "Kaka, thoda ahistha dena, Hobie bhi yahan naya hai."
"Theek, theek, beta," The vendor laughed. "Apke aashiq ko impress toh karna padega."
Pavi choked on his Pani Puri. Hobie turned to him concerned, as he said something in 3 octaves higher than his normal voice.
"Kaka- aashiq nahi hai woh- hum bas dost hain," Pav said, wiping tears from his eyes with his sleeve.
"Meri beti bhi apne bf ko dost bolti hai. Woh dono bhi ek dusre ko aise hi dekhten hain. Usko lagta hai mujhe nahi pata lekin ham bhi toh aapke umar ke the," The vendor winked, and Hobie was sure this conversation was not about anything he could imagine. Why on earth would this random man be winking at Pav? "Aur hum yeh bajrang dal jaise vishwas nahi rakhte, pyaar toh pyaar hota hai na?"
"Ji kaka." Hobie could see Pav's blush that seemed to radiate because why else Hobie would feel flustered too? "Ahem," Pav looked at his wrist like he was looking at the time, except he did not have a wrist watch on. "Kaka abhi hame jana padega- chemistry coaching hai- kitna hua?"
"Itni jaldi? Theek hai, sukhi puri lelo," He said, handing over two flatter crisps. Without the liquid. Hobie felt it was easier to fit this in his mouth after all the other Pani Puris. "Sath rupay hue,"
"Kya kaka, angrez dekhte bhau badha dete ho? Main akele khata toh chalis ka hota," Pav said, his voice taking a complaining tone and Hobie was surprised to find him even more endearing.
"Beta, jab aap dhanda karoge tab samajh mein ayega, abhi apko coaching nahi jana?"
"Han, kaka, din dahade loot lo," Pav said, and Hobie got a sense of defeat from his slouch, as he forked over what Hobie assumed was the price of the Pani Puris. "Let's go, before uncle embarrasses me in front of someone."
"You paid money to your uncle?" Hobie thought it'd be easier to get around in Earth-50101 as time went on, but here he was, getting more questions and no answers as he hung around.
"He's not actually my uncle, I'm calling him that out of respect. It's a cultural thing, don't worry about it," Pav answered, grabbing Hobie's hand as he wove between the forming crowd. Hobie sighed, letting Pav drag him around, his hand warm in Pav's soft palms.
___
i have nothing to say.
translation (not literal translation bc then id have to explain a shit-ton of grammar, slang and indian pop culture to yall):
Thoda time lagega beta, abhi kate pyaaz khatam hogaye - it's gonna take some time, [I] just ran out of the chopped onions
Koi nahi kaka, aap aaram se karo - no problem uncle, take your time
Arey bahut saaf hai beta! - oh its very clean, kid
Bura mat manna kaka, aapko pata hai yeh videshi log kaise hote hain. - please don't be offended uncle, you know how foreigners can be like.
Chalega chalega, badi hi gori dikh rahi hai, pata chal gaya yahan se nahi hai. - It's okay, she looks very light skinned, [I] assumed she wasn't from around here.
Uske liye kam tikha dun? - should [I] make it less spicy for her?
Kaka, thoda ahistha dena, Hobie bhi yahan naya hai. - Uncle, please slow down [the pace], Hobie is new to this too.
Theek, theek, beta - Alright, kid
Apke aashiq ko impress toh karna padega. - [I know] you have to impress your boyfriend.
Kaka- aashiq nahi hai woh- hum bas dost hain, - Uncle- he's not [my] boyfriend- we're just friends,
Meri beti bhi apne bf ko dost bolti hai. Woh dono bhi ek dusre ko aise hi dekhten hain. Usko lagta hai mujhe nahi pata lekin ham bhi toh aapke umar ke the. - My daughter also claims her boyfriend is just a friend. They look at each other the same [way you do]. She thinks I don't know [about them], but we [adults] used to be your age.
Aur hum yeh Bajrang Dal jaise vishwas nahi rakhte, pyaar toh pyaar hota hai na? - I don't believe stuff like Bajrang Dal. Love is love, isn't it?
Ji kaka. - Yes, uncle. (in this case)
Kaka abhi hame jana padega- chemistry coaching hai- kitna hua? - Uncle, we need to go- It's time for my chemistry tutorial classes- how much [were the Pani Puris]?
Itni jaldi? Theek hai, sukhi puri lelo, - So fast? Okay here's your [aftersnack snack (that's that least complicated way to explain what a sukhi puri is)]
Sath rupay hue, - it's 60 rupees.
Kya kaka, angrez dekhte bhau badha dete ho? Main akele khata toh chalis ka hota - C'mon, uncle, y'all see a foreigner and increase the price? If I was here alone, this would have cost 40 rupees.
Beta, jab aap dhanda karoge tab samajh mein ayega, abhi apko coaching nahi jana? - Kid, when you grow up and have a job, you'll understand, now, don't you have classes to attend?
Han, kaka, din dahade loot lo - yeah, okay, why don't you just rob me,
Some context (you dont need to read this)
kulfi is an ice cream equivalent, usually flavoured with almonds, pistachios and saffron
beta literally means 'son' but its used to refer to any kid who's very young relative to the speaker's age; and also for jokes b/w buddies but that's a different thing
kaka literally means 'father's younger brother ie uncle', but can used to referred to any man who isnt related to you and is about the age of the speaker's parents; there are also other terms depending on by who and how you were introduced to the person
Bajrang Dal - an anti-societal group against religious and sexual minorities(as defined in the indian constitution, do not come at me with politics). Famous in pop culture for being vehemently against valentine's days and premarital eye contact (you think im joking)
The Chemistry Coaching thing is a big deal. Kids have great pride about which institute they go to. The institutes teach accelerated courses for specific competitive examinations, usually in an unethical way. It's considered kinda shameful if you don't go to one. (very dystopian, ik)

i believe ive shared this thing once before in one form or another. in case i havent, this is a sorta rework of a poem i wrote maybe five years ago while i was reading "Letters from an American Farmer" by (deep breath) J. Hector St. John de Crèvecœur for a class on colonial american literature. the names an obvious giveaway but i still like it.
anyway, i thought itd be fun to the text an accompanying visual element this time around. like i said, the writing is old, so cut me some slack.
also its horror so you know proceed with caution.
plain text under the cut
Letters from the Last American Farmer
Frontiersmen do their souls neglect,
Turned to trappings, metal bound.
Hid away from the Elect,
Noses pressed against the ground.
From hand to mouth- the path’s direct.
I’ll stand apart and hold my worth,
A farmer be, and earn respect;
I till the soil, turn the earth.
Who is he, the favored son,
Who raises up the fruit and grain?
And works until the day is done,
And come the harvest reaps the gain.
This is he- I’ll be the one
To give my life to righteous toil.
I wield the pitchfork, not the gun;
I turn the earth and till the soil.
Proclaim the men from off the docks,
“Ubi panis ibi patria”
And to her fortunes they will flock
In love of fair Columbia.
Perhaps it comes to you a shock
Or else a simple source of mirth
But this pride you mustn’t mock;
I till the soil, turn the earth.
The silver hand of Justice fair
Does lightly steer the citizen,
Brush’d his cheek, as soft as air
With good will towards his countrymen.
And although we know it rare
To her blind axiom we’re loyal.
For sanctum from the noble glares
I turn the earth and till the soil.
The story’s whispered, be it true,
Often is it I have heard
Although he’s swaddled in the glue,
Tar and feathers make no bird.
No wings, no eyes, yet high he flew,
The rope raised up a deathly girth,
And bid, as I, this soft adieu:
I till the soil, turn the earth.
The snake pursues me, long and white.
Its doubts do pull me from the fold
To embark into the night,
To embark into the cold.
Far to the West they say there’s light.
Though ill-bred souls may curse and roil
Like gold, my virtue still shines bright;
I turn the earth and till the soil.
The land’s the heart and heart’s my own.
With little cabin, hearth, and fire,
I make this wilderness my home
And faithfully snuff my desire
For meat that melts clean from the bone.
I’ll overcome the winter’s dearth
If God’s good graces He may loan.
I till the soil, turn the earth.
Desolation scrapes my spirit,
The rifle shakes within my grip,
An anthem’s sung- I cannot hear it,
Teeth set upon my trembling lip.
Do in my labours I promerit?
Or show some moral split or spoil?
The end is nigh and as I near it
I turn the earth and till the soil.
One final verse I will extend
As cold and hunger overtakes
In hopes that you, my final friend,
Perhaps may learn from my mistakes.
Here all is ruin, all shall rend
Revolutions come unbirthed,
Yet compelled am I to tend
And till the soil, turn the earth.
Till the soil, turn the earth.
Till the soil, turn the earth.
Till the soil, turn the earth.

To Be of Service- Google x GN!Reader
This started as a thought exercise about how advanced androids could help in home medical care and turned into this.
Content warnings: References to PTSD, mild depiction of panic attacks and nightmares
Word count: 1400+
Google IRL.
The revolutionary product, designed to make your life so much easier. With dozens of customizable programming options, they could do most anything you needed. They were even used in applications previously reserved for service animals. Guiding the visually impaired, monitoring vitals to predict a seizure, performing household tasks that proved difficult for a person. They really were amazing things, feats of modern programming.
And now you had one. At the recommendation of your care team, you finally got your own Google IRL. The doctors made the suggestion because an android would be more beneficial to aid your recovery than a service dog.
Please read instructions completely before operating your Google IRL device.
The booklet went over all the basics of owning and operating your Google android, including basic setup, commands, limitations, maintenance, and troubleshooting. With a hesitant breath, you started the android up. His eyes opened and looked around the room quickly before settling on your face.
"Good afternoon, I am your Google IRL android. For your convenience I have been preloaded with several protocols and programs to assist with daily life. Would you like me to go over them now?"
"Please do," you responded quietly.
"I have been preloaded with protocols for several household tasks, such as cleaning, food preparation, and household maintenance. I have standard functionality to perform first aid and reach out to emergency services if needed. My primary objective is to assist with daily activities and answer questions as quickly and efficiently as possible. Does this explanation suffice?"
"Yes, Google. Let's begin with the initial setup."
It took a while to get all the basic setup out of the way and let Google connect to the servers to update. You made sure the list of protocols the doctors had listed for you were installed and functional. It was strange at first, having a robot that seemed so human milling about in your home, but after a few days you found a sort of balance. You hadn't done much beyond the included tests with the additional protocols, hoping that when they were needed he would be able to do them properly.
For the first few weeks he was mostly making use of his basic protocols, doing tasks around the house and keeping track of appointments. He would go out with you on errands, which made the whole thing so much easier. When you had trouble speaking, he was your voice. When you didn't have the energy to take care of yourself, he was there. It was the simple act of him existing with you, the promise of him being there in a bad situation that made the initial awkwardness worth it. He was usually quiet, but had seemed to develop a personality as time went on. You had asked him once if he wanted you to call him something other than Google, but he had nonchalantly told you that you could call him whatever you pleased, and he would register it to his memory. You decided to think on it another time.
~
Oh no, not this nightmare again. You were haunted with the memories of the past, the things you had been through. You knew you were dreaming. You always did now, when you had this nightmare. Please wake up already. It was no use. The dream continued on, showing you the painful reminders of your past. No, stop. No more. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up!
You shot upright in bed, chest heaving. It felt tight and heavy and full of ice. You looked around the room, trying to ground yourself.
"Y/N." You yelped in surprise and fear. "Your vitals suddenly spiked. Are you alright? Would you like me to perform a medical scan?"
"N-no Google. Please just come here, and can you turn on the light?"
"Of course," the soft light flicked on and you watched Google approach the bedside. "Shall I begin the panic attack protocol?"
"Please, Google."
With a nod, he sat beside you, gently taking your hand. "Please follow along with me as I guide you through a breathing exercise. This will help regulate your heart rate and lower your adrenaline and cortisol levels."
He led you through breathing exercises and grounding techniques, until the trembling of your body calmed and your heart rate returned to normal. In this moment you were very grateful to have been recommended Google instead of a service dog. "Your vitals are regulating to satisfactory levels. Would you like me to get you a glass of water and something to eat?"
"Yes, please. Thank you, Google. I don't know what I would have done without you."
"Of course, Y/N. I am here to assist you. I'll return shortly with water, and something light to eat."
He returned minutes later with a glass of water and a granola bar and watched you intently until both the water and the granola bar were gone. He silently took the wrapper and the glass from you, and you vaguely heard his footsteps as he padded around the kitchen before returning to your side again. He looked at you so gently, if it wasn't for the faint glow in his eyes, he'd look completely human.
"Google? Can you lay with me?" You felt embarrassed just asking. Logically as his owner, of course he'd agree, but it still felt awkward to ask.
"Certainly," he carefully laid down on the bed. "What would you like me to do now?"
"H-hold me. Please…" you whispered, almost hoping he didn't hear. He shifted closer, wrapping his arms around you gently.
"Is this adequate?" He asked, equally quiet. You nodded, leaning into his embrace and laying your head on his shoulder. For a few minutes you just curled against him, trying to relax enough to sleep again. "You are crying. Am I hurting you?"
"No! No, I just… I'm overwhelmed. I don't like walking up from nightmares and feeling like I'm back there again."
"I understand now. Crying is an excellent way to regulate yourself when feeling overwhelmed. I recommend you allow yourself the opportunity to release your emotions. I assure you that whatever you dreamt about that scared you so much, I will protect you. You are safe in my care."
You buried your face in his chest, squeaking out a small "thank you" before your body shook from the sobs racking themselves through your body. His hand gently stroked your hair, and that gentle affection was so much more comforting than you could put into words. You hiccuped as more tears fell from your eyes. "I-I'm sorry," you sobbed. "I'm sorry you have to put up with me clinging to you like this."
"Don't apologize. There is nothing I'd rather be doing than comforting you at this moment. Please let this work its way through you. I'm not going anywhere and I've got you. You're safe."
He held you until you shed your last tear. You fell asleep, cradled against him and woke still in his arms. You slowly looked towards his face, expecting him to be staring at the ceiling. His eyes were closed. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think he really was just another human like you. He really was an amazing feat of science. “Y/N, I see you’re awake.” he turned his face towards you, “Are you feeling adequately rested?”
“Given the circumstances, I’m feeling well enough.” You sat up slowly, checking the time. 9:27 AM.
“I felt it appropriate to disable your alarm as your sleep was severely impacted last night and you do not have anything on your schedule until 1 PM. Shall I prepare you breakfast?” You nodded wordlessly, slipping out of bed and heading to the bathroom for a quick shower.
Entering the kitchen carding your hands through your still damp hair, you saw Google at the stove. You sat down, watching him cook with carefully calculated motions. He set the plate on the table in front of you and immediately began cleaning up. The comfortable silence settled into the room as you finished your meal.
“Would you like me to accompany you to your appointment this afternoon?” You nodded, feeling silently grateful to have such a wonderful android in your life.

scott pilgrim vs. the world (2010)
...or how to be cool and be freak at one time.
Tumblr media
in fact, "scott pilgrim vs. the world" is a film that deserves more attention and probably deserved more back in 2010, but it is not surprising that then it was not interesting enough for the public. bright, interestingly working both with visual details and with the composition of the "hero's journey". this is a bold experiment that actually had to sacrifice itself in order for geek culture to begin to emerge from the shadows. just 2 years after the release of scott pilgrim, the incredible "avengers" appeared in theaters, which were not as grounded and "weird" as "scott pilgrim vs. the world" , but shone with seriousness and richness. even if this richness has not yet stood confidently.  (yes, i know that at that time films about x-men had been released for a long time, even snyder's "watchman", but "avengers" can be considered the first work of a new quality)
because sometimes, in order to start something anew, u need to introduce absurdity and destroy some patterns.
scott pilgrim - the absurdity that was needed. in the same way now pixar have now restarted their style of animation and storytelling - the incredibly simple "turning red" in which the creators have gone from the photorealism that has been honed over the years is now just the beginning of something new.
Tumblr media
сhapter one. hero's journey
in the film, we see a clear structure of the hero's journey, which is even surprising. scott pilligrim at the beginning lives in the ordinary world. the most common. he has a band where he plays bass and sometimes they have live performances. he is a loser himself - he shares an apartment with a friend because he cannot pay the rent in full himself, he meets a girl five (5!) years unger than him, because he is not ready to be serious. he understands that he should not date a schoolgirl (knives), people around him tell him about it, but he continues to do what he used to, simply because otherwise he will have to think more about his past love.
but he falls in love with ramona. and this is his main motivation for the next film - to achieve ramona flowers by any means, overcoming the tests in the form of a "league of seven evil exes". and so, when he gets to the last level, defending the honor of his love interest, he loses to the final boss, because he chooses "the power of love." rewind.
he goes through the level again, turns to the group that left him, getting their support, gets to the "dragon", but instead of words of love he speaks of respect and receives the "power of self-respect", with which he wins.
how often do we see mario coming to the princess only win because he chooses himself and not his love interest? how often does an encounter with a dragon change the hero and the protagonist's reward is self-respect? i'm sure not that often.
but we see it in scott's change. he becomes a hero (the same loser, self-realized and given courage, lmao) from an existence without a goal. yes, his punk trio suddenly didn't get millions and ramona left. but he becomes different — he comes home a new person (thanks to "the hero's journey"). and this is the main point.
Tumblr media
сhapter two. visual and sound.
scott pilgrim comes from comics. and if modern movie universes are built on maximum realism, the absence of at least some cartoonishness, then scott pilligrim (like pany parker's line in "spiderman through the universes") is pure absurdity with acting, drawn inserts and references to video games. the filmmakers are literally telling us: hell, what if, after defeating the former, pixel coins rain down on him? what if two brothers with their music will launch huge ghostly dragons, and the music of a punk trio who do not even know what the charts are, will create a monster that kills these dragons right above the crowd? but what if the forces that the hero needs in the final battle are swords that he will get from his chest?
it's a huge "what if" visual style, using geeky culture as a way to tell a story. even if some scenes look like a dream and we don't understand how we got there and how to get out of there. and this applies not only to the drawing elements that are superimposed on the montage. we see it in cuts — comics ways to show the picture work great here. it's a way of telling something about a character. and this is very important.
each musical scene (fictitious group "sex bob-omb" recorded 5 tracks for the film) plunges u into the atmosphere of a real performance. it also reflects the status of the characters - awkward, weird losers who don't think about lyrics. they just sing. the lead singer pours out his soul, even if it's repetitive lines. the important thing here is exactly how the guitars sound, how it all makes noise and rumbles, growls and breaks the sound, leaving an uneven edge.
u can't stop. every scene, visual, camera work, music, soundtrack, literally anything makes u move forward. is scott just tying his shoelaces or is he wearing a jacket? — excellent, these will be insanely dynamic scenes, because of which it seems that a bomb has exploded on the screen and now we see the moment of the explosion.

the final.
scott pilgrim vs. the world is an amazing movie with an incredible cast and a funny, original and slightly cheeky reflection of geek culture. it hooked people in the past - though not all of them, because it wasn't mainstream then - it hooks people these days and will hook.
u may not know exactly how pac-man should have been called, why it is called that way now, but this film is definitely something that will introduce u at least a little bit to the world of harsh canadian comics, in which the loser remains the loser, but love is a motivator, not a reward.

Also, do you have any thoughts on Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei? Again, if you’ve seen it
SZS certainly was the hot thing for a bit in the mid to late 2000s, and I've watched and enjoyed it... the first three seasons (I think), that is. The problem is that it's SHAFT in a nutshell (in fact, I'd say it is quintessential SHAFT show, even over Monogatari, Pani Poni Dash fans don't @ me) - a lot of style, and just about enough substance to make it work. So the substance eventually runs out, and then the style gets old, and I eventually got bored of watching what is essentially a lightly themed Shinbo demo reel.
I fact, I think the reason I never liked Monogatari is that I was already tired of its visual vocabulary via having seen too much SZS, and Nisioisin's vapid rambling isn't even close to what Kumeta can do on a good day.

body won't stop afflicting me with the slings & arrows of outrageous GI disease so we are doing Research in lieu of sleep again~*~
inga iwasiów on lesbian prose (aniela's novel came out in 1933; it won a major national award; i have to assume stefania & jelonka, as fascinated as they both were by psychoanalysis especially, most likely read it):
"Oczywiście, ta różnica jest najlepszym odzwierciedleniem różnicy społecznego umiejscowienia gejów i lesbijek, oddaje ich z gruntu różne historie, stopnie symbolicznej niewidoczności. Trudno wyobrazić sobie w dyspozycji jakiejkolwiek pisarki podobną środowiskową mitologię codzienności i podobnie długą listę literackich nawiązań, po jakie sięga Witkowski. „Przygoda w nieznanym kraju” Anieli Gruszeckiej, hipotetyczna miłość bohaterek, to niewiele, zwłaszcza że zapożyczenia u Virginii Woolf (cudowne fragmenty „Pani Dalloway”) są w niej ewidentne. Wydaje się, że miłość lesbijska najlepiej wyraża się przez takie konstrukcje narracyjne, które mają status fantazji i w tym widać związki ze wspomnianymi Gruszecką/Woolf."
- the idea of borrowing-->"foreign loanwords (i.e., structural/formal 'loans' from foreign literatures/authors)"-->intertext as lesbian narrative mode (this has been ~theorized, i'm sure, but noting it shorthand for now)
- use of silences the way silence is used on stage / what remains unspoken on the page but present in the reader's mind by reference OR by silence that speaks volumes / idea of understanding & being understood completely *without* words
- there is also a whole article on how aniela uses visual art & i gotta read it because there is one paragraph. at the end of w-l 1939. like first when bichette is singing "o mój rozmarynie..." stefania has this vivid image of her apartment, of domesticity, to fill in the gap where the verse's narrator comes to the girl with his intentions. when stefania-joanna leaves jelonka-bichette at the end of the scene, she says "take my coat"--in the song the narrator is issued a military coat "so he won't miss home" & won't miss this girl. on the penultimate page of the book, stefania closes her eyes again & remembers the same room in her apartment--the room where she & jelonka used to sit, she'd give dictation & jelonka would type, this is described in the letters--& imagines staring into an abstract painting that hangs above her desk [i need to identify the painting]. someone brings her tea. & then--the phone rings. a "dear, close voice" on the line, asking "are you going to the theatre tonight?" this can only be bichette; she's associated with theater throughout the book, & also with the interior of this room.
- there are no letters from 1933! however jelonka does write to felicja, & she's very depressed. i need to access her letters from special collections...but hopefully there will be more in the biography...

Litania, w której pewne rzeczy są wykreślone
Litany in which certain things are crossed out, Richard Siken, Crush, 2006
I will need the translation in a linkable place at some point so I’m posting it here, where other people can see it, because why not. Unfortunately, the best I could do to preserve the visual characteristics of the poem was to convert the doc pages into pngs. Plain text version is available at the bottom.

Litania, w której pewne rzeczy są wykreślone Richard Siken, Crush, 2006
 Każdego ranka liście klonu.
Każdego ranka kolejny rozdział, w którym bohater przestępuje
z nogi na nogę. Każdego ranka te same wielkie
i małe słowa, wszystkie oznaczające pożądanie, wszystkie oznaczające
i uwiodłem cię,
posiniaczyłem, zrujnowałem, biedaku ty.
Chciałbyś lepszą historię. Kto by nie chciał?
Zatem las. Piękne drzewa. I śpiewająca kobieta.
Miłość na wodzie, miłość pod wodą, miłość miłość i tak dalej.
Ależ jest ujmująca. Śpiewaj, pani, śpiewaj! To budzi smoka, rzecz jasna.
Miłość zawsze budzi smoka, i nagle
Pewnie,
zatapiam łódkę miłości, ale to dopiero potem. I tak, połykam
szkło, ale to potem.
A ten fragment, w którym przyciskam cię
No dobra, jestem smokiem. Co z tego.
Tak czy siak, ty jesteś bohaterem.
Dostajesz magiczne rękawice! Gadającą rybę! Oczy jak dwa snopy świateł!
Czego mógłbyś chcieć więcej?
Robię ci naleśniki, zabieram na polowania, mówię do ciebie, jakbyś
naprawdę tu był.
Jesteś tu, kochanie? Znasz mnie w ogóle? Raz-dwa, czy ten mikrofon działa?
Pozwól mi zrobić to jak należy, ten jeden raz,
ku pamięci, pozwól mi zrobić coś z kremu i gwiazd, coś, co będzie,
wiesz, jak to idzie, po prostu niebiańskie.
Słyszysz, jak w twojej głowie dzwoni telefon,
a kiedy otwierasz oczy,
Cofam to.
Drewniane korytarze jak trumny. Te prymitywne określenia.
Cofam je.
Oto powtarzający się obraz zniszczonego kochanka.
Wykreślony.
Niezdarne ręce w ciemnym pokoju. Wykreślone. Coś jest
pod deskami podłogi.
Wykreślone. A tutaj stoi tabernakulum,
zbudowane od nowa.
Oto fragment, w którym wszyscy byli zawsze szczęśliwi i wszystkim
przebaczono,
do małego pokoiku z niedziałającym zlewem, twoimi rysunkami, wszystkimi twoimi rzeczami,
spojrzałem za okno i powiedziałem
To nie różni się za bardzo od domu,
bo nie różniło się,
ale wtedy zauważyłem czarne niebo i tamte światła.
Przeszliśmy przez budynek do kolejki nadziemnej.
Wszystkie te budynki, to szkło i ten lśniący, piękny,
mechaniczny wiatr.
Okej, jeśli jesteś taki mądry, sam to zrób –
masz tu ołówek, spraw, żeby było dobrze...
Jeśli okno jest po twojej prawej, jesteś u siebie w łóżku. Jeśli okno
jest na twoim sercu, namalowane na zatrzask, to oddychamy
wodą rzeczną.
Zbuduj mi miasto i nazwij je Jeruzalem. Zbuduj mi kolejne i nazwij je
Jeruzalem.
Wróciliśmy z Jeruzalem, gdzie nie znaleźliśmy tego,
czego szukaliśmy, więc zrób to jeszcze raz, daj mi kolejną wersję,
inny pokój, kolejny korytarz, kuchnię przemalowywaną raz
po raz,
kolejną miskę zupy.
Opowiedzenie całej historii ludzkiego pożądania zajmuje jakieś siedemdziesiąt minut.
Niestety nie mamy na to czasu.
Zapomnij o smoku,
koktajle z cytryną i melonem, śmiech w jedwabnych piżamach
i drobinki cukru
na kanapkach, miłość miłość, czy coś, wybierz numer. Przepraszam,
że to taka kiepska historia.
Drogie Przebaczenie, wiesz, że było nam ostatnio
trudno i że jest mnóstwo rzeczy,
o które chciałbym cię poprosić.
Raz już próbowałem, liceum, druga przerwa obiadowa, i potem jeszcze raz,
wiele lat później, w basenie pełnym chloru.
Wciąż mówię do ciebie o pomocy.

Blu-ray Review: Watch Me When I Kill
Tumblr media
Watch Me When I Kill is a relatively obscure Italian giallo film from 1977, but it delivers on all the staples that make the subgenre so enjoyable: a well-plotted mystery, violent death scenes, stylish camerawork, and a progressive rock score. It also boasts a verbose yet tantalizing title in all territories; it's also known as The Cat with the Jade Eyes (Italy), The Cat’s Victims (UK), Terror in the Lagoon (France), and The Vote of Death (Germany).
The murder-mystery is set into motion when nightclub dancer Mara (Paola Tedesco, Battle of the Amazons) witnesses a killer fleeing a crime scene. Believing that she's intended to be his next victim, Mara moves in with her boyfriend, Lukas (Corrado Pani, Rocco and His Brothers), for safety. Bodies continue to turn up as they race to determine the ruthless murderer's identity.
Tumblr media
Watch Me When I Kill is comparable to - and some might even argue derivative of - Dario Argento's giallo work circa Deep Red. The film's stalking scenes, of which there are several, are masterful. Director Antonio Bido (Bloodstained Shadow) sets voyeuristic point-of-view shots by cinematographer Mario Vulpiani (Castle Freak) to propulsive prog rock instrumentation.
The Argento imitation extends to the score, which could be mistaken for his frequent collaborators Goblin; particularly their landmark work on Suspiria, Deep Red, and Dawn of the Dead. The music is, in fact, credited to Trans Europa Express, a one-off group of session musicians. The band features Mauro Lusini, who went on to provide vocals on Goblin's 1982 album, Volo. It's truly a shame they didn't record more music together.
Tumblr media
Where the film falters is in the procedural aspects, in which writer Vittorio Schiraldi positions an abundance of undeveloped characters as red herrings. But the killer's ultimate motive is an interesting - and perhaps even sympathetic - one. The death sequences aren't particularly gory or inventive, but they're mean-spirited, which match the motive. Eschewing the giallo standard of black leather, the switchblade-wielding killer dons white surgical gloves.
Watch Me When I Kill arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Synapse Films with a gorgeous 4K restoration from the original negative. It features DTS-HD MA English and 2.0 mono Italian (with English subtitles) soundtracks, plus an isolated music-only track. A bonus CD featuring Trans-Europa Express' full score is also included; it stands out as one of the more cohesive and effective giallo soundtracks under Goblin's influential shadow. The release features a reversible cover, with the Italian artwork on the other side.
Tumblr media
Extras are led by an audio commentary with Nathaniel Thompson. The fast-talking film historian is thorough with information not only about the film and its players but also giallo cinema at large, providing valuable context. Dr. Mikel Koven, senior lecturer in film studies at the University of Worcester, provides an 11-minute "defense" of the film, which is a rather thoughtful appreciation. The original English title sequence, the U.S. trailer, a TV spot, and radio spots are also included.
Last but not least are three recent shorts written and directed by Bido: 2015's Danza Macabra, 2017's Mendelssohn Im Judischen Museum Berlin, and 2018's Marche Funebre D’une Marionette. Not only is the filmmaker still active, but he has retained his panache. Each piece has no dialogue, instead utilizing classical piano compositions to accompany a visual story. Based on the strength and resurgence of Watch Me When I Kill, coupled with these shorts that dabble in the genre (particularly Danza Macabra), it would be great to see Bido tackle another horror feature soon.
Watch Me When I Kill is available now on Blu-ray and DVD via Synapse Films.

Water Water Nowhere
India is grappling with a severe water crisis causing serious concern.
Decades ago (more than 50 years ago) a hindi poet ' Bedhadak Banarasi ' wrote
' veh yug kab ayega
jab burai dhundenge log bhalai mein , jab pani bikega diyasalai mein '
He was a true visionary who could visualize water being sold in small matchbox like containers.
The crisis is so deep that a ministry has been created in the center to deal with the crisis . The issue is much more complex than it appears. There are several issues intimately connected with this problem. Simply inviting some so called celebrities and intellectuals to spout some inconsequential homilies on TV channels and organized gatherings is not going to wish away this serious problem unless the basis issues are tackled to arrive at a viable solution.
Population explosion deserves immediate and intense attention. Presently Indian population is 138 crores and will surpass population of China by 2024 . In 2030 India will be the most populous nation of the world with an estimated population of 150 crores. These figures are terrifying but nobody seems to be bothered. These figures have direct impact on water consumption and availability. Water is primary need for almost all human activities
The demand and consumption of water has already risen much higher than the availability and the situation will worsen with rise in population.
Population control is a key issue that needs to be addressed immediately at war footing. Unfortunately nobody is prepared to even talk about it, let alone do something positive , due to various factors like lack of family planning, massive infiltration across our borders, illegal immigration etc but these issues are being studiously ignored.
The issue of population control has to be tackled very firmly and quickly. Hoping to educate people to realize the enormity of the problem in order to bring about a change in perception with regard to population control, will be an exercise in futility.
There are many other factors responsible for water crisis which have to be considered and corrective measures taken urgently.
Fellow bloggers are are earnestly requested to share their views about the water crisis and the ways to resolve it .
