Godmothered is a 2020 American fantasycomedy film directed by Sharon Maguire and written by Kari Granlund and Melissa Stack from a story by Granlund. The film stars Jillian Bell in the lead role, alongside Isla Fisher. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Secret Machine Entertainment,(1) the film debuted on Disney+ on December 4, 2020.

The Walt Disney Company first began developing the film in September 2019, with Maguire joining the production as director later that month. Principal photography began in January 2020 in Boston.

Plot(edit)

In a magical place called the Motherland, fairy godmothers train so that they can help people's wishes come true. Among them is the youngest, and only fairy who is not elderly, Eleanor Fay Bloomingbottom who gleefully commits to the craft despite not being very good at it. The godmothers stick to a 'formula' that many have grown bored with (i.e., true love, castle, etc.). Eleanor learns from another godmother that the school is to be shut down, as nobody makes wishes anymore, and that they will have to learn to be tooth fairies instead. Determined, Eleanor checks the assignment room and discovers a letter from a 10-year-old girl named Mackenzie Walsh and decides to help her. She is aided by the oldest student, Agnes, who warns her that if she is found out, the school will shut down and, worse, her powers will be stripped.

Eleanor ends up in the real world where a friendly trucker takes her to Boston, Massachusetts, where to her shock, Mackenzie is a miserable 40-year-old single mother who works at a failing television station that reports on puff pieces. She manages to convince her that she is a fairy godmother by displaying her magic and Mackenzie is forced to take her home to her two children, Mia and Jane, and her sister Paula, who helps with looking after the kids. Mackenzie has trouble raising her children as Jane has social anxiety when it comes to singing, which she needs to do for her high school. Eleanor is forced to sleep in the basement and comes to believe, based on a comment Mackenzie made, that her husband ran away.

Eleanor begins affecting the family's lives when she starts tagging along with Mackenzie to work and meets her coworkers Duff and Hugh Prince, the latter of whom has feelings for Mackenzie, much to Eleanor's delight. Eleanor accidentally creates a colorful explosion in the sky and later creates a citywide blackout. She becomes a viral sensation following a sledding accident, the latter of which gives the news station higher ratings. Eleanor learns from Mia that Mackenzie's husband died and realizes that it is connected to Jane's anxiety and helps her by having her sing 'My Favorite Things' in public. Meanwhile, Mackenzie's newfound optimism convinces her to undergo a makeover and she begins hanging out with Hugh more; himself a divorced father with a son.

Agnes tells Eleanor that she needs to have Mackenzie's true love found by midnight the next night, or she will lose her powers. She convinces Mackenzie to attend a party being thrown by their unscrupulous boss Grant and attempts to use her powers to make her fall in love with Hugh. This fails and Mackenzie berates her for trying to impede on her life. Their argument is heard by everyone at the party with Grant believing that all the recent stories were planned. Mackenzie tells Eleanor to leave, though Paula finds her fairy godmother book and sets out to look for her. To Mackenzie's surprise, Grant wants Eleanor back to exploit her. When Mackenzie refuses, Grant fires her and Hugh quits after revealing that he was offered another job.

Mackenzie learns that Jane still has anxiety, as she needs to sing for the high school at the Christmas festival that night. They find Paula trying to help Eleanor create a pumpkin carriage. They tell her that they need her and she creates a watermelon carriage to take them to the show on time. Jane performs using her father's guitar to a stunned audience. Moira, the headmistress, arrives to take Eleanor away, calling her a failure. However, Eleanor informs her that she realizes that the formula is dated and that everyone has their own idea of true love. After encouragement from the Walshes and the audience, Moira concedes that Eleanor was a success and the two of them head back with the assignment completed.

In the epilogue, rendered in traditional animation, Eleanor has become a teacher in Motherland and is seen teaching new children godmothers the new way.

On September 7, 2019, it was reported that Walt Disney Pictures was developing a film centered around a fairy godmother in-training, tentatively titled Godmothered. The film will be an exclusive release for the company's streaming service, Disney+.(2) On September 22, Sharon Maguire had joined the production to serve as director, from a script co-written by Kari Granlund and Melissa Stack, while Justin Springer is attached as producer.(3) On January 9, 2020, Ivan Reitman joined the production as executive producer.(4) On January 30, 2020, Tom Pollock, Amie Karp and Diane L. Sabatini were revealed to be serving as executive producers for the film alongside Reitman.(5)

On January 9, 2020, Jillian Bell and Isla Fisher joined the cast in the lead roles.(4) On January 30, 2020, Jane Curtin, Jillian Shea Spaeder, Willa Skye, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Santiago Cabrera, Artemis Pebdani, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Stephnie Weir, June Squibb, and Carlease Burke joined the film's cast.(5) On April 21, 2020, Rosalind Chao joined the film's cast in an undisclosed role,(6) though it ended up getting cut in the final film.

Production for Godmothered began on January 20, 2020, in Washington Street and Pleasant Street, Marblehead, MA, under the working title Frills.(7)(8) Disney officially announced the start of production on the film on January 30, 2020.(5) Filming was also expected to take place at North Square on February 6, 2020, but was rescheduled to February 28 due to weather conditions.(8) Filming also occurred in Brasenose College, Oxford on March 7, 2020. Filming for Godmothered wrapped by April 2020.(9) Weir and Ambudkar improvised heavily during filming, with many of their scenes ending up in the final cut.(10)

Post-production(edit)

Post-production for Godmothered began by April 2020.(9) The film features an epilogue rendered in hand-drawn animation by Studio AKA. According to Maguire, the idea of using hand-drawn animation was considered before filming, and later discarded. However, the filmmakers ultimately decided to use animation for the epilogue in response to the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, which left the filmmakers unable to film any additional footage.(11)

Music(edit)

Rachel Portman composed and produced the score for the film. Jillian Shea Spaeder performed two songs for the film's end credits, titled 'Rise Up (Joy to the World)' and 'Hero'. The soundtrack was released on December 4, 2020, alongside the film.(12)

On review aggregatorRotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 70% based on 69 critic reviews, with an average rating of 5.6/10. The website's critics consensus reads, 'More bippity boppity than boo, Godmothered tweaks fairytale conventions with just enough self-aware humor to overcome a disappointing deficit of genuine magic.'(13) On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 49 out of 100 based on 12 critics, indicating 'mixed or average reviews'.(14)Download icloud photos to mac folder.

Hi folks! My name is Jesse, and usually I write over at the Best Interest. But today, Mr. SR was kind enough to let me write here on Semi-Retire Plan. Thanks Mr. SR! I want to compare different semi-retirement savings rates to see what you need to save to have a high chance of success.

I was inspired today by Mr. SR’s article how to compare “semi-retirement” to FIRE. I think his graphical explanation does such a good job describing what “semi-retirement” looks like compared to FIRE or a normal career arc. It reminds me of the Fulfillment Curve in that way—such a simple plot, but such a clean idea.

But I’m a bit of a math and numbers nerd, so I got curious. What if we tried to apply some hard numbers to this plot?

We know how the market has performed in the past. We know how someone might typically approach a “FIRE” retirement. We have a few different ways to approach semi-retirement.

I think we have enough information to do some comparisons! I want to see how various semi-retirement paths compare against the “traditional” FIRE retirement.

Establishing a baseline, defining “failure”

Like any good study, we need a control, or something we’re comparing against.

I decided to create a baseline using some of the parameters that Mr. SR outlined in the article that inspired me today. For the sake of simplicity, our baseline is a “normal” 20-year FIRE career. Here’s the full list of assumptions:

I looked at a 22-year old, just starting their career.

I assumed they made $50K a year. For the sake of simplicity, I kept that salary constant throughout their career.

I assumed they saved 44% of their income. Why? This is about what someone would save if they wanted to retire after 20 years of work

Via Networthify, assuming a 5% net average annual return (quite conservative) and a 3.5% withdrawal rate.

In Year 1 of retirement, they withdraw 3.5% of their nest egg. Each year after, that number increases via 2% inflation

I assumed they lived until age 82. Their FIRE is deemed a failure if their nest egg falls below $0 before age 82. Otherwise, their early retirement is deemed a success.

I used my trusty MATLAB code to run a Monte Carlo simulation of possible futures, using historical data as a benchmark. How did I do this?

Calling all math nerds

If you want some nitty-gritty math details, read on. If you’re a casual reader, just know that–after trial by fire–I’m using a fairly complex method of simulating stock market uncertainty. But you might still enjoy skimming or skipping to the results at the end!

When I first simulated market uncertainties using a Gaussian distribution, a lot of my nerd readers said, “Gaussian?! The Laplacian distribution does a much better job simulating the ‘long tail’ behavior of the market.” Cool! That makes sense; let’s try that out.

So then I wrote another article with simulated data–an in-depth analysis of the past and future of the 4% Rule–and this time I used the Laplacian distribution. But I was met with more nerds squawking, “Laplacian?! Everyone knows that the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck distribution is noise-correlated and exhibits mean-reversion, both of which are vital in modeling financial markets!”

Man! Who knew so many statisticians read my blog!? I thought Ornstein was a type of cow…

Clearly, the method of statistical simulation is an important detail here; a poor method is a recipe for “garbage in–>garbage out.” But it’s also a detail that maybe 1% of you readers really care about.

Just know that I’m know using the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck distribution in this simulation today, and that it’s nerd-approved.

A note about models

I’m an engineer, and I make computer models all the time. There’s an oft-repeated aphorism among model builders: All models are wrong, but some are useful.

In the context of today’s article, keep that quote in mind. I’m not suggesting that my simulation is 100% correct. After all, I can’t predict the future.

But I do think that the model is useful. It’s based on realistic assumptions, and produces realistic outputs.

Importantly for us, it’s easy to tweak the inputs of this model, and then observe the resulting changes in outputs. This is the useful portion. This model can show us how semi-retirement compares against our baseline.

…back to today’s model simulations

Much like historical markets, my simulations exhibit multiple sequences of bear and bull runs. Here’s an example of one simulation:

And here’s some actual market data for comparison (1960-2020):

We can see the bear market in 1973-1974, Black Monday, the Dot Com Bubble, and the 2008 Great Recession in this data. And when we compare it to the simulated data, it certainly passes the naked eye tests in terms of variations and trends. This is a reasonable possibility of what our 22-year old can expect for the 60 years that they’re invested in the markets.

…Back to our 22-year old FIRE aspirant

I ran 10,000 simulations, each of which had a unique, randomly generated financial market. Some of the markets did better than an 8% annual return, while some did worse.

Within each market simulation, I ran the FIRE baseline and multiple semi-retirement scenarios (which I’ll talk about below).

An actual retiree might choose a more stable portfolio as they approach retirement, so I included that in my simulation too. During working years, my simulation assumes a 100% stock portfolio. But during retirement, I simulate a more stable 50/50 mix of stocks and bonds. Here’s what that looks like:

How did our FIRE plans hold up? How many times did our FIREee run out of money before the age of 82?

This FIRE plan failed in 1210 of the 10000 simulations (12.1%), similar to the 13% failure rate (for 40-year retirements) that the famous Trinity Study yields from the 4% Rule.

So if we’re going to look at different semi-retirement scenarios, we want to compare those semi-retirement results to a 12.1% failure rate. We want to know when semi-retirement is better than FIRE, and when it might be worse.

Semi-Retirement Scenarios

After chatting with Mr. SR a bit, I came up with the following semi-retirement variables to look at.

Length of full-time career — how many years are you working 100% (e.g. 40+ hours per week)

I varied this from 10 to 20 years.

Length of semi-retirement career — how many years are you working <100%?

I varied this from 4 to 20 years

Semi-retirement income — when you’re “semi” working, what exactly does “semi” mean?

I varied this from 20% to 80% i.e. 1-4 days per week

To reiterate: I ran through each combination of these various semi-retirement parameters during each of the 10,000 market simulations.

Results!

So let’s take a look at the results. There are lots of interesting questions one can ask about how semi-retirement could help, or hurt, retirement plans. For example, how might someone fare if they only worked 16 years full-time, but then worked 10 years part-time? How does this compare to our baseline 20 years of full-time work?

If this person only worked 1 day per week during their 10 year semi-retirement, then their retirement ended up failing in 36.7% of the simulated markets. Yikes! That’s significantly worse that the baseline 20-year full-time FIRE plan (12.1%).

But if our subject decides to work 3 days per week during their 10-year semi-retirement, then their failure rate plummets to 9.6%, which is better than the 20-year full-time FIRE plan.

Clearly, planning the level of your semi-retirement is vital for retirement success!

A little semi-retirement goes a long way

We know that every little bit of extra income will increase our chances of success… but by how much? How much does semi-retirement help after the baseline 20-year career is over?

So let’s start with a 20-year full-time career, and then taper down to 60% income (or 3 days per week) during semi-retirement.

How much does 2 years of 60% semi-retirement improve the 12.1% baseline failure rate? What about 4 years? Etc.

Interesting! If you don’t mind a few years of semi-retirement, you can give yourself a lot of added retirement security. Our 22-year old can work full-time until 42, and then work part-time until age 50–and their retirement plan has a 0.7% chance of failing. That’s a big improvement over the baseline.

A Plot Says A Thousand Words

Here is one of the 10,000 market simulations, and the 60% semi-retirement scenarios (same as above) in that market. Each plot shows what our hypothetical nest egg looks like over the full 60-year career. Let’s zoom in on a few details:

First, logistics: the X-axis is months from start, while the Y-axis is in dollars (x 100,000)

At Year 20–one possible retirement date–we had $627K in our nest egg, or about 25.1 times our annual spending.

All of the semi-retirement careers succeeded, while the plain FIRE plan failed just prior to month 700.

Check out the 2-year and 4-year semi-retirement plans. While they succeeded, it was nerve-wracking! They almost ran out of money. It shows just how important the initial nest egg is, and how impactful a poorly-time bear market can be.

And now compare the 2- and 4-year semi-retirement careers to the 10- through 14-year semi-retirement careers. Look at how much extra security a few more years of semi-retirement gained us!

There was a big bull market around month 550. But we’d hardly notice it if we’re looking at the “worse” careers. In those scenarios, the market growth was barely outpacing our retirement spending. Once that bull market ended (~month 600), the “worse” careers really started to go downhill–even as another bull market started near month 650!

Specific semi-retirement data

I want to present you readers with a few buckets of success/failure rates, and show you various semi-retirement plans that fall into those buckets.

Which semi-retirement plans are most similar to the baseline?

What a good question!

How can we tweak our subject’s career while maintaining results similar to the baseline 12.1% failure rate? Here are a few semi-retirement combinations that all fall between 11.0% and 13.0% failure rates.

Lots of options! We can see some expected conclusions from this data. For example, it takes a lot of 20% years to make up for each year we retire early. On a similar note, 80% semi-retirement is a reasonable proxy for working full-time.

Perhaps my favorite conclusion comes from the second and third rows: 16/16 and 14/14. Someone could plan their semi-retirement exactly halfway to retirement. They could approach their career like many do–30 years of work. The first half of their career would be full-time. The second half would drop down to 2 or 3 days a week. And they’d end up in a similar situation as our baseline FIRE planner.

Which semi-retirement plans get me <5% failure rate?

5% holds a certain allure in the FIRE community due to the original Trinity Study’s results. The quick-and-easy FIRE recommendation is that the 4% Rule has 5% failure rate looking backwards at historical market returns.

So, how might one approach semi-retirement to achieve a 5% (or better) failure rate? Here are some results, all of which have less than 5% failure rate.

Long story short: work full-time for nearly 20 years, and then tack on some semi-retirement at the end. That’s a sure-fire way to drive the original 12.1% failure rate to less than 5%.

Key takeaways

Going into this article, I wasn’t sure how the math behind semi-retirement worked. How much semi-work does it take to make up for the fact that you might be quitting full-time early? I found this little study to be quite enlightening regarding that question.

It turns out, semi-retirement has a lot of viable paths. There are ways to plan 30 year careers that are split 50/50 between full-time and semi-retired. There are ways to plan semi-retirement while still keep “risk of retirement failure” very low. And there are knobs to turn whether  you want lots of 3 day weekends, or prefer to only work one day a week. There’s a semi-retirement plan for you.

This will be yet another post in which I only write to map out my future goals, and refuse to actually update on the past (at least, the recent past) because I’m not ready to face my emotions yet. (Reminder for when I do write a real update: I need to go all the way back to july 25th, the week before finals).

Okay so today’s Saturday, tomorrow I close (and put in my two week’s notice!!! YEEHAW) and then the following week is the last week before the fall semester starts. I’ve REALLY been slacking on my studying. I separated my studying into two categories: the foundation exam (which is literally everything from comp sci 1) and extracurriculars (python, command line, autoCAD/solidworks/matlab, and how the hell github is used). I was supposed to balance between the two categories to not get bored, but since I only have one week before the foundation exam, I’m going to make that my #1 priority. 

I’ve realized that studying at home is just a bad idea, even at the dining room table. It’s just too tempting to go to the kitchen and overeat, or go back to my bedroom and stare at the mirror (not in a narcissistic way, I’m just like a cat or some shit, where I like staring at mirrors. It’s very easy to make me distracted with small gimmicks).  The library is open, even during breaks, from 7:30-5. On monday I need to go to campus to pick up my parking pass because I know that if I wait for the semester to start, the lines will be obnoxiously long. So from monday forward, I’ll be studying in the library that whole week. I plan on going in order of the comp sci 1 curriculum, but if I start to run out of time, I’ll start studying from the end because that’s the sections that I slacked off the most during the semester (although really, I must not have done TOO bad, since I still got a 95 on the final...). 

So tomorrow, before my shift starts, I’ll step into the manager’s office and give my two weeks notice (and I will NOT let them coerce me into staying, my answer is final). I’ll tell them that I’m quitting because I need to focus on school this semester, which they’ll understand; I’m the only full-time college student at my entire venue, and a lot of my coworkers are surprised that I’m working 3 days to begin with. This means that my last day at work will be the 30th (I requested the 31st off because of the foundation exam), which is a closing shift (how fitting...). The week after that is rush week for alpha kappa sigma and I’m so excited!!! Tuesday and thursday I might not be able to go because my object oriented programming class is from 6-7:15, but hopefully tuesday will just be like, syllabus day and I can run over to rush after. 

I’m gonna also try to join SEDS again, do the model rocket club that I would have done freshman year if I had enough ambition. I don’t know about coding clubs, I want to join one but I don’t know of any. To be honest, I think ASK is gonna be my main form of networking/experience, because it’s just so much easier to work in a group with other girls. 

One of my coworkers recently told me that I overthink, and make myself stressed out about things that I shouldn’t be stressed about. This was about the time I was a cook at cinnabon and we ran out of every product we had (and the freezer was broken, so we literally had nothing), but I feel that it also applies to college. I failed calc 2 the second time because I kept psyching myself out, and I need to be careful not to do that with the foundation exam. I get so caught up thinking, “oh my god, I need to study really hard or else I’ll fail” that my notes will literally have every minute piece of info remotely related to the topic, and I barely get through one topic (see my notes on dynamic memory allocation- three full notebook pages of notes, in my tiny ass handwriting, just to cover malloc and calloc). I need to find a balance between “let me copy the entire textbook word for word” and “I don’t need to take notes on any of this, I already know it.” Somewhere like “I have a general idea of this concept, so I don’t need to take notes on everything, just write a refresher and some small details I feel like I’ll forget.” Because I got a 95 on both the final and midterm exams, which is all of the material on the foundation exam. I only need to get a 60 on the foundation exam to pass, and it’s pass/fail, as in, getting a 61 is the exact same as getting a 100 (I mean, I can use a higher score as bragging rights, or bring it up an an internship interview to make up for my shoddy gpa, but that’s about it). So I need to stop stressing and just start studying. 

When I get my student refund, I’m first going to buy an office chair for my desk, so that I can study at home if I want. I feel like sitting at a real desk, and not a dining table or on my bed, will really make it easier to study. 

Anyways that’s pretty much all I have to say for now. Since tomorrow is a closing shift, I’m going to stay up tonight until at least midnight to make my sleep cycle proper. That’s roughly 7 hours I can study, so I hope to get through 2 of the remaining 11 units. Then, monday and tuesday I’ll try to wrap up the remaining 9 units (2 hours per unit seems fair), and wednesday through friday I’ll try doing the previous years’ exams to get a feel of the material. 

Oh, another thing I wanted to add: I think I might switch up my main blog style again. I mean, like I mentioned in a previous post here, I just don’t care about multifandom kpop any more, and even when it comes to bts I mainly use twitter to keep updated. Tbh I feel like I haven’t been honest to myself about who I am, and that’s simply a fuckin nerd. I mean, whenever I’ve been around rose, I’ve tried to be like her, ya know, going to clubs, doing ig baddie style makeup and stuff like that. Not that there’s anything wrong with that kind of stuff, but I’m just not an extrovert. I like playing video games on my computer, and coding, and even *gasp* watching anime. I feel like if I let myself enjoy activities that I actually enjoy, I’ll be more comfortable and able to make friends. Another thing to buy when I get my student refund: minecraft. And a raspberry pi. Plus, doing real activities like gaming and stuff would be a hell of a lot more productive than just laying in bed scrolling down reddit all day.

Because I didn’t come for the meat, cheese, and beer...

My German class ended this week with a short oral exam, so now I can focus more on my research project and final report. I was finally able to remove all the failed parameter sets from each matrix and run the Global Sensitivity Analysis on these generated data. I lost almost half the samples through this process, however, so the GSA did not give usable results. Eduardo suggested we use Local Sensitivity Analysis instead. It’s not as robust as GSA, but much simpler and easier to implement. Like GSA, LSA will help us identify the most influential parameters in the model. This method utilizes partial derivatives at specific time points to show how a variable in the model changes as one of the parameters changes. I wrote a new MATLAB script for LSA (of course with lots of input from Eduardo). Monday I will go through the results to identify the most important parameters for each variable.

I visited the Lindt factory in Aachen with the other girls from Michigan on our way home from research. It was a warehouse of chocolate, basically everything Lindt produces, but on sale 😍 I bought several bars of dark chocolate (most good dark chocolate is vegan).

I watched the sunset from Lousberg on Friday with a friend and her Tinder date. Ha how romantic ;)

I took a weekend solo trip to Gent, Belgium. Unlike nearby Bruges, Gent has a vibrant and active atmosphere due to the large student population. It has its own unique, rich history, but has not yet been taken over by tourism. I spent hours wandering the streets, sometimes on purpose and sometimes by accident. It’s the perfect place to explore alone because it is very safe and small enough to get around with just your feet and a paper map. This was ideal because I hadn’t downloaded the region on my phone. I found my hostel listed on the free city map, so I walked across town to check in. The only problem: the hostels were all listed by the wrong numbers, which I found out when I arrived at the given location. I used a bit of data on my phone to find the correct location, saw it was a 50 minute walk back on the other side of town, and then my phone died. After wandering for a few minutes in the direction my navigation had shown, I stumbled upon one of the cafes I planned to visit! One of the reasons I wanted to visit Gent was its reputation for abundant vegan food. I had done my research and came prepared to eat 🙂. A woman at the cafe greeted me warmly and helped me find my hostel on the map. She gave me directions and I ordered a delicious brownie served on a cutting board. From there, I appreciated the walk across town without my phone because I could just take in the city without feeling obligated to take pictures or check navigation. I spent the weekend eating fantastic vegan food, wandering through the town with a paper map, learning about Gent’s medieval history, and meeting people from all over Belgium and the world.

Lokaal, where I had dinner Saturday, was cozy and hipster and perfect. Arnold, the only guy working there, was super chill. He said there was no English menu, but he normally just tells people what he’s making that day. Most of the ingredients are locally sourced and everything is vegan.

The quiche and vegetables Arnold made for me at Lokaal. It was some of the best food I’ve ever had, vegan or not. A trip to Gent is worth it just to go to this cool little cafe! I would’ve gone back if they were open Sunday.

It’s been a long time since I updated my blog. This is because most of our Tuesdays were cancelled due to unavoidable instances and accidents. It was a typical stressful Tuesday. Thermodynamics exam is scheduled by 5:30pm and everyone was a wreck. But this blog is not about that and I am not here to discuss how everyone managed to fail the exam. We only have 3 hours for our laboratory, and half of it was designated for the ever postponed reporting. I went 2nd because no one’s volunteering and I just want to be done with it. It was successful, besides the fact that I was nervous and was stammering (a bit). I was able to discuss how my chosen journal which is entitled “Matlab based Automated Surface Defect Detection for Ceramic Tiles using Image Processing” by Yasantha C. Samarawickrama and Chamira D. Last Tuesday, we are taught with analyzing images in MatLab with image processing. We are given pictures of coffee beans as our sample. Our prof gave us the M-file for the activity. The image is first declared and can be converted to grayscale and black and white. Not all photo will be successfully analyzed due to quality of the pictures. Sometimes, wrong amount used in converting it to grayscale can also be a cause. This is true when we used a photo and tried some other set of numbers when we want the shapes of the coffee beans to be easily analyzed by MatLab. By converting it to black and white and then to shades of only black and white, you will know if you made a mistake in declaring the value that turned it to grayscale. If there are no roundness in the shapes of the coffee beans, for example, black shades had covered the area for the coffee beans, you had input the wrong value. So in here, you can try again. Fortunately, we understood how it is done but it was too late that when we are given an exercise, we failed to finish it on time. But it was alright. The final step will cause the coffee beans had numbers assigned to them. This means that the image is now analyzed. Through this, you can know the area, perimeter and the roundness of the coffee beans. If you made a mistake, some coffee beans will not be analyzed.

We are then given an assignment where we search for a journal that can be used for image processing and we are going to report it.
