Chapter 2 of my time slip fic in the next is underway! I think I need to revisit my plan for this one and tinker with it a bit. But I’m excited about introducing Gale and picking apart Bucky like he’s a rotisserie chicken.

“American?”

He asks it growled, rough as the way he’s manhandled Bucky since they collided. He’s a bit rough all over, dirty like Bucky probably is from a day of marching and all the sweat and dust. Bucky swallows, blinking up at him, and the reply rasps out all apologetic.

“Yeah. Yes. Sorry.”

There’s high color in the guy’s cheeks under the smears of grime, and his hair is bright and golden even though it’s matted and stringy. He has a cut on his cheek, rusty smears and flecks of blood dotting his face in splatter. Only when he grunts wordlessly and snatches at Bucky’s collar—the pistol doesn’t waver—does Bucky consider that the blood might not all be his own.

“Whoa,” Bucky warns again, scrabbling as much as a gun in his face will allow to keep the guy from choking him out as well, but a hand locked around his attacker’s wrist doesn’t stop him from yanking at the necklace unsettled from under Bucky’s t-shirt.

He isn’t trying to strangle Bucky instead of shoot him; he’s reading the tags. It’s weird enough that the falter and halt trips through Bucky’s insides quick—he’s still holding the man’s arm, but he can’t make himself do anything else.

“Egan,” the man murmurs, and weirder still is how he isn’t pointing the gun any more and is instead clambering off of Bucky and pushing himself to his feet. He keeps his fist around the necklace, twisting and yanking, already staring back through the trees he’d burst through as he huffs out, “Up, c’mon,” and Bucky’s choice becomes following the order or being throttled by his grandad’s dog tags. Once he’s on his feet, the tags become a leash, the guy not letting go but already starting to lope away, his clear urge to run cut into Bucky’s skin with how tight the chain pulls.

“Fuck, man. You alright?”

The question’s maybe halfway sincere, because there is a story to be pieced together from the gun and the blood and the dirt and the wild, animal edginess in this guy’s movements, and though there’s nothing but flitting panic in Bucky’s mind, he knows it can’t be a happy one.

Session 20

Quite the note we last left off on! I want to see what’s about to happen just as much as you do, so I’ll make this quick.

Our dear protagonists investigated the recent strange plague sweeping the Stolen Lands, in which monsters burst forth from within animals and rampage, killing but not feeding on the meat left behind. Ella did some investigation, finding the only thing out of place being that Annamede was keeping notes on the party and other hunting guests.

That was, until that night’s dinner. As dessert was being served, Timol, one of the serving staff, doubled over in pain before plants ripped him asunder and left a basilisk in his place. The party and their fellow hunters managed to put the beast down before it could claim any other lives.

Further investigations were made, now with the pressure of time as they didn’t know how this disease was spread and how much danger they might be in. They quickly learned, however. Sharp-eyed Ella found miniscule seeds within the night’s meal, which had been made from the beasts hunted that day. Medical examination revealed that what was left of Timol also had seeds embedded in his throat and stomach. It was surmised that most of these seeds were unviable—but that it would only take one sprouting to have the horrific effects seen thus far.

Going through the hunting lodge’s food stores, they found that food was contaminated as far back as a few months prior. Food older than that was clean.

Ozzy went to check on Jolie Aldori, to make sure she hadn’t eaten any of the infected food. She hadn’t, making her the only person in the lodge who was guaranteed to not be infected. The party decided to ask if she could take their fastest horse back to Belt’s Beacon, to gather their most scientific and magically inclined comrades. Jolie agreed, despite her severe injury, with the pride of a true Aldori.

In the following days as they awaited their companions, our dear protagonists did further research and investigations on the strange malady. They learned that a cult of goblins was active in the area, and that the heart of this curse would be with them. Supposedly. *sigh* Second-hand information just isn’t what it used to be.

With Octavia and Jubilist continuing to investigate the curse, and Nok-Nok hanging about for moral support, the party and Tristian went to see just what the Greengripe Goblins had to do with this plague upon the land and its people.

They found the goblins with little issue. Getting into their surprisingly well-built and walled off village was another issue. The goblins didn’t act immediately hostile when they approached, but said that there was nothing for ‘longshanks’, and to leave. Ozzy led the party away, only to use his hat of disguise to become Tusktooth, goblin poacher extraordinaire.

Whoever gave him that hat has my deepest appreciating.

The party loosely bound their hands, and ‘Tusktooth’ led them back to the entrance. The goblins seemed mildly confused by him, but shrugged it off as him being a northern goblin, and they let him enter to bring his captives to their chieftain.

The party made for the shrine of Lamashtu, where the goblin leader Muglund would be. Inside, ‘Tusktooth’ tried to bargain for his captives, but Muglund was suspicious and tried to send him away. Ozzy dropped the act, and the party tried to jump Muglund. The supposed goblin chief was quicker than expected, and tossed out two vicious flytraps before he began peppering the party with spells.

Despite some setbacks, the party managed to destroy the man-eating plants and ended Muglund’s life. With Ella’s killing blow, the supposed chieftain transformed back into his true form: the doppelganger, Virthad. With this new complication, the party began investigating Greengripe. And Irena introduced them to the wonders of capitalism. At least, it’s wondrous to her. I’d have told them to have a death match for the title. Or maybe a pie eating competition.

Where was I? Right. The party got a clearer timeframe for when the chief was swapped for his double, and even found his charred body, still clutching to his symbol of Lamashtu. As if she would save him, ha! The final straw was finding a building set up as a sort of First World greenhouse. Except, as Ella surmised, it was nothing but a decoy. A mere smokescreen to incriminate the goblins.

Without any leads on the true mind behind this cursed plague, our dear protagonists settled down in a goblin hut to sleep.

And now we enter. As Tristian awoke Irena to inform her that he’d been given a dream, by one Nymph Queen. And she wants to talk. And so, with that conversation to come, our curtain rises, and our players take the stage.
