So, Nixie has fire powers. She’s grown up on a pirate ship with very crude accommodations.. and being someone who adapts to less than ideal circumstances, she naturally came up with a solution. Nixie makes a contraption similar to the lantern - which brings light to the pirate ship she lives on :3 When she arrives in Corana, she presents the idea to Rapunzel and she is ecstatic, insisting she show this to Varian. Unfortunately, Varian is annoyed that Nixie uses magic rather than alchemy - and the two end up bickering. Nixie finds Varian’s dislike of magic petty, and enjoys annoying him by showing him up with her fire magic. But eventually, the two learn to respect each other.
