Eddie was grimy, there was no way to hide the fact. Under his three t-shirts, two flannels borrowed from Wayne, his least hole-y pair of jeans, his pajama pants, two hoodies and the ski jacket that Grant’s older brother left behind when he moved to New Mexico, he was grimy. Going more than two days without a shower made him fit wrong in his skin, reminded him too much of the days before he’d come to live with Wayne when nobody had the energy or attention to run him a bath if they even noticed he needed one. It had been four days and he’d needed a shower on day one after all the shoveling he’d done to get out of the damned trailer to begin with. He was cold, and bored and grimy.

The latest update had not been promising. The storm had knocked down most of the power lines. It had also blocked 90% of the roads, trees fallen on wires all over town. The power couldn’t be restored until the roads were cleared, and the roads couldn’t be cleared until the trees were off the wires. And the wires couldn’t be fixed until the roads were clear. And the roads couldn’t be cleared until...

He decided to go to Gareth’s where he would still be cold and grimy but at least he wouldn’t be bored. Across from the Munsons, Susan Mayfield was struggling to push her station wagon onto the sanded part of the drive, her daughter Max behind the wheel steering and alternately pressing the gas when told. The back wheels spun digging grooves in the packed snow and going nowhere. Without thinking Eddie trotted over and grabbed the bumper beside her. Susan glanced at him in surprise and not a little trepidation, but she wasn’t about to turn away a helping hand and together they braced and shoved the car onto ground that was at least only half ice.

“Thank you- ” Susan paused and he knew she was searching her memory for his name. “Eddie.” “Thank you, Eddie. Don’t know what I would’ve done without you.”

He gave her a little salute. “Always honor-bound to help those mired in troubles.” She stared at him like he’d spoken pig Latin, eyes wary again. Damn, he was being weird. He was being Too Weird. Sometimes the mothers of Hawkins found his schtick charming, not this time it seemed. Not that he cared, but she was Wayne’s neighbor. He deflected. “Getting out while the getting’s good?” he asked, “Smart move.”

“She’s taking me to stay at Steve’s until the power comes back,” Max called from the driver’s seat.

“Steve Harrington?”

“They have a generator,” explained Susan.

“Of course they do.” That got him a small laugh. “He running an emergency shelter or something? Must need the community service hours.”

“Max’s friends are staying there too. The Sinclair boy and those others. Normally I wouldn’t want to impose but my supervisor said I could stay in the break room overnight, but only me and it’s been so cold well- I thought since Steve said the boys could ask their friends over... He’s such a thoughtful boy, don’t you think?”

It was Eddie’s turn to stare. Then he shook himself, “Well, I’ll let you get on your way. Tell Lucas I said hey.” He started the van, letting it warm up as he watched mother and daughter drive carefully away. RIP King Steve, long live St. Stephen of the Holy Generator. Of course everyone and their mother, literally their mother, thought Steve Harrington hung the moon, and all he had to do was flip a switch. Probably, or maybe turn a key? Eddie didn’t know how generators worked.

As he drove to Gareth’s he stewed. Here he was freezing and grubby, and he hadn’t eaten a hot meal in days (Eddie sometimes voluntarily went days subsisting on cereal and jerky but that was different) while Steve Harrington was holed up in his castle, warm and cozy. At least Eddie’s little sheep were reaping the benefit of that inexplicable friendship. Hmmm. There was something there. Susan Mayfield had said the boys were allowed to invite any of their friends to stay at Harrington’s, and well, he, Eddie, was their friend? As much as Steve Harrington was, if not more so (despite Dustin’s praises, Eddie still had his doubts about Harrington’s ultimate motive). Alright then, he’d collect the boys- Gareth, Jeff and Grant were also as much friends with the freshmen, and they’d prostrate themselves on Steve Harrington’s doorstep in the name of friendship. Either Steve would have to let them in to share his comforts or he’d have to turn them away in front of God, Mike, Lucas and Dustin. Like the douchebag he was. Win-win.

Timeline-wise this doesn’t really work but Duffer brothers don’t care and neither do I so:

Pre S4 when Dustin, Mike and Lucas are still trying to convince Eddie that Steve isn’t the literal worst a huge blizzard hits Hawkins. Whole town loses power for days. Of course who’s the only house with a generator? Casa de Harrington. Steve has all his kiddos over to camp out there for the duration.

Then word gets back to the rest of the Hellfire club and Eddie decides that they should crash the party, aka finagle some hot showers and working stove access from their association with Steve’s kids. He figures it will be fun, and funny, and serve Steve right for all his previous bullshit, to have a bunch more freaks running around his fancy house: either they get out of the miserable blackout or he kicks them out in front of Dustin and co. and shows what a true douchebag he is.

But when they get there Steve is fine letting them stay. He’s apparently been letting a whole troop of people from Keith to the ladies in Mrs. Henderson’s rotary club stop by for hot food and to do laundry. The kids are great but they’re starting to go stir crazy and they don’t understand that he can’t just run the power 24/7 solely for them to stay up all night watching movies and playing Atari, he is actually trying to keep enough fuel to heat part of the house for people to stay in, for hot water and cooking, until the power comes back. And the kids are also tired and stressed and bored and starting to whine and generally not be the best version of themselves. So Eddie’s surprised by how patient and generous Steve’s being with his home, and Steve is beyond grateful that Eddie and Gareth and Jeff and the rest are there to distract the kids.

(If Steve and Eddie end up enjoying each other’s company more than expected, Steve surprisingly engaged by Eddie’s storytelling and Eddie stepping up to put the fear of god into the young’uns when they get too snarky with Steve, well, desperate times right?)

5. Who says ‘I love you’ first?

That depends on how you’re counting. Katy says the words, easy as breathing, has done since she could talk, no problem. It’s never a formality or a reflex, it’s 100% genuine every time she says it. Wayne only says it a handful of times, but he shows it every day, cooking and doing dishes together, planting her favourite flowers in the vegetable patch, carrying the basket of wet laundry for her so she can peg it out, bringing her coffee in bed for their traditional Sunday morning lie-in.

Once Katy told him she was thinking about keeping bees, to save them some money instead of hiring them every Spring for pollination. So he looks up plans and builds her some boxes the very next day. He calls around town to find a hive that someone wants shot of, and buys a secondhand but still-in-good-nick spinner and a beesuit and veil. It’s worth it, the splinters and stings and running around, all of it, when she pops the first bite of honeycomb into his mouth and smiles at him.

9. What is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other?

This one’s tough, because they’re never really uncomfortable enough with each other that they get embarrassed.

The first time they get drunk, like, properly drunk, they’re in their study room, chilling on the secondhand loveseat they got from Uncle Eddie and Aunt Marian. They’re sixteen tomorrow, and consider themselves very grown up, capable of handling pretty much anything, including liquor. Their parents are the lax sort, so they’ve had a wee dram here and there, usually in tea, or warm milk with honey if they’re ill.

Tonight though, it’s the day before their birthday, they’re supervision-free, it’s the height of summer, and their parents are away on a date, so the twins decide to start their revels early. They nick the whiskey from the kitchen and make sure to load up on snacks to bring upstairs with them so they don’t have to chance sneaking back down to the kitchen after their parents get home. Very responsible, very forward-thinking; they’re totally nailing adulting. They’re not even going anywhere, so they can’t possibly get into too much trouble, right?

Wrong.

They’re getting quietly tanked, chirping an old episode of MST3K, and booze is as booze does, so Katy has to wee. She stands up to go, or rather, she tries to stand up. All the alcohol goes to her head all at once, and she immediately over-balances. The only thing that saves her from taking a header into the coffee table is Wayne throwing his arms around her and pulling her back into his lap. Concussion successfully avoided, yay, but the pressure around her middle only exacerbates her original problem.

‘Wayne, you gotta let me up, I gotta go.’ She pats his arm, tapping out.

‘You gonna be alright?’ Wayne seems sceptical, but releases her nonetheless. It’s not fair he sounds so much more sober than she feels.

‘I’ll be fine, I just wasn’t expecting it.’ To be honest, Katy’d expected being drunk to feel kinda similar to smoking pot, which she’s pretty used to by now. She stands up much more slowly this time, moving very deliberately, and makes her way to the washroom between the study and their bedroom. Her fingers refuse to cooperate with the pocket door and the button of her shorts, but she does eventually get things sorted before she gets too desperate.

While she’s sitting there, she decides to make things easier on her future self and change into pyjama shorts. She’s a genius, she’s handling this so well. The pocket door to the bedroom gives her just as much trouble as the one leading to the study. Rather than tempting Fate by attempting to stand on one leg, Katy sits on the bed to get changed. She’s just pulling her shorts up when Wayne chooses that moment to bang on the door.

‘Are you okay in there?’ he calls through the door.

‘I’m just putting on some pyjamas.’

Wayne sounds disgruntled. ‘It’s been twenty minutes. I thought maybe you’d fallen again.’

Awwwwwww. He was always looking out for her. Katy slides the door open and leans against the frame, smiling. ‘Were you worried about me?’

Wayne’s habitual squint is a bit uneven, so maybe he’s not as unaffected as she thought. Good to know. ‘I don’t wanna hafta explain to our parents that I’m suddenly an only child, no.’

Witty as ever. ‘C’mon, let’s go back to the sofa.’ Katy slides an arm around Wayne and they lean against each other as they walk a little unsteadily back to the loveseat. Once they’re settled back down, they keep absently nibbling their snacks and passing the whiskey back and forth. It gets late enough that they hear the truck coming up the laneway, and they share a moment of visceral, heart-stopping paranoia, like somehow their parents are gonna just know, via telepathy or some other Spooky Parent Power.

Normality reasserts itself when after a couple of minutes, there’s a complete lack of doors opening and shutting. Wayne barely leans out the window before he registers the slight sway of the truck, and for the sake of his sanity he launches himself backwards before he can see anything unfortunate, but he hadn’t counted on Katy being right behind him and he bowls them both over in his haste.

‘Oof,’ is all she says, staring up at the ceiling. A moment of silence passes between them before Wayne speaks.

“They’re gonna be in the truck a while.’

Another moment of silence while this works its way through Katy’s brain. ‘Oh my God,’ she moans, voice full of despair, ‘we have to ride in that truck!’ She rolls over next to him and buries her face in his shoulder. ‘I really, really wish you hadn’t’a said that.’

Wayne sighs, puts his arm around her shoulders, and pats her sympathetically. ‘Sorry, kiddo, but if I have to suffer, so do you.’

‘That is not covered under for better or for worse,’ she says, muffled.

‘Twins for life, honey. No getting divorced.’

Katy raises her head to look at him and digs her pointy little chin into his ribs extra hard, just ‘cos she can. ‘You’re a terrible person. I’m gonna trade you in.’

Wayne adopts the snootiest Customer Service voice he can muster. ‘I’m afraid the sixty-day return policy has lapsed.’ He grins. ‘You’re stuck with me.’

She hums, ‘Well, if that’s the case. I suppose you do have your uses.’ Katy snuggles closer and lays her head back down. ‘You’re pretty comfy, for a start.’

‘Oh, well. As long as I’m useful.’

‘Like a good piece of furniture. Decorative and sturdy.’

They giggle quietly until they hear the back door open and shut. There’s the sound of feet on the stairs, and then a quick tapping at the study door as their parents wish them goodnight in passing, and they warmly return the sentiment from their spot on the floor.

When they hear their parents’ door close, Katy whispers, ‘There’s one way to try and erase that image.’

Wayne nods. ‘That’s a Texas-sized 10-4.’

They relocate back to the sofa again, piling pillows on one end and stretching out across it as they resume passing the bottle back and forth. Eventually, the television switches over to a new programme, and by that time, their parents’ snores are echoing through the house. They’re both so relaxed it almost feels like a Sin, breaking the peace, but Katy’s had the most excellent idea and it would be rude and selfish if she didn’t share it.

‘Hey, Wayne,’ she queries.

His hand pauses petting her hair. ‘Katy Kat?’

‘Wanna go have a smoke on the roof?’

Oh, that’s class. ‘I’d have a dart.’

The biggest benefit to their room being on the complete opposite side of the house from their parents’ is that it’s practically soundproof. They don’t hear any night noises they don’t wanna hear, and they get easy access to the roof via the porch gable and the big window in the study. Wayne gets the gear from the sock drawer and they climb out on top of the porch, only a little wobbly. From there, Wayne hoists himself up onto the roof proper, then pulls Katy up after, and they settle in for a dart and a joint respectively. They’re flushed and warm from the drink, and the smokes go straight to their heads, leaving them dizzy and giggly; but the night air is bracing and helps cool them off.

They lay back together and point out all the constellations they can remember, then start making up new ones and giving them the most ridiculous backstories they can come up with. After about half an hour, the whiskey jacket wears off and Katy gets cold enough she wants to go inside. Getting down is a lot more of a challenge than getting up had been. Any other time they’d just jump for it, or else they’re sneaking out and shinning it down the tree, but those are both too noisy to be real options. They eventually work out that they have to sit down and then lower themselves in a weird sort of reverse pull-up type manoeuver. Or, well, Wayne has to lower himself and then lift Katy down. There’s a close call as she shifts her weight forward when he’s not expecting it, but they recover and no one falls or breaks anything, so they carefully climb back in the window.

Safely ensconced back on the couch, they’re in that space between drunk and sober where judgement has left the building, but you’re absolutely certain you’re making an unbiased, totally objective decision to have another drink. Killing the last third of the bottle seems like a brilliant idea. Things take a sharp nose-dive from that point. Where before they’d been slowly sipping at the whiskey, now they take gulps; after all, they’d handled it so far, right? The television plays softly in the background, but they’ve long since lost the plot. Whatever’s going on, it involves a robot, a Cat-man, an idiot, and some prick with an H on his forehead. Drunchies are no joke, and before they know it all the snacks have mysteriously disappeared and they’ve no memory of finishing them.

That was the tipping point, it seems, because the nausea comes on, creeping up like a thief in an alley, the heartburn and the churning bile and the spins, and oh fuck, the spins. Katy’s head feels tight like a migraine, but also weirdly floaty, like she’s too high. Wayne’s not doing much better himself, breathing slow and heavy and focussed on one spot on the ceiling to try and quell the urge to spit. If they’re very, very still, they might be able to power through this.

Luck is not on their side. Katy needs the bin, now. She turns to ask Wayne to grab it and-

A strangled ‘Wayne,’ is all the warning he gets before Katy hurls right in his lap. For a moment, he’s too stunned to do anything, but then she retches and does it again, and that’s what triggers his gag reflex, the sound and the smell and the warm liquid splash, and Wayne tosses his cookies even as he’s reaching for the rubbish bin. That sets Katy off again, and they’re caught in a vicious cycle of calling Huey until there’s nothing left in either of them to bring up.

They have to use every towel in the bathroom to clean up the mess, dry heaving the whole time, until it’s as good as they’re going to get it in the middle of the night. They rinse their mouths out and brush their teeth very gingerly, trying not to set off another round of gastrointestinal rebellion. Katy still feels hot and woozy and not a little gross, and she refuses to get in bed like this and mess up the nice, clean sheets. Wayne doesn’t exactly smell like a bed of roses either, so they sluice off and get into fresh, non-puky pyjamas. Katy’s head is clear enough by then that she has the foresight to make them both drink some goddamn water and take some aspirin before they get in bed.

The next morning is a special level of Hell, ‘cos it turns out their parents are totally on to them. Busted. As if being wretchedly hungover weren’t punishment enough, their parents make sure to be extra loud and unsympathetic to their misery. Birthday pancakes bring no joy, the smell of frying bacon is revolting, and the very idea of anything as acidic as orange juice has them both on the razor’s edge of being ill again.

Wayne and Katy Suffer through breakfast and cleaning up the kitchen after, until some buckets, brushes, and heavy-duty surface cleaner are shoved into their hands. They trudge upstairs and start scrubbing the puke out of the floorboards. Every part of the sofa needs to be cleaned as well; the cushions, the upholstery, the cover. Even the remote for the television. All of this on top of their regular chores leaves them shaky and exhausted by lunchtime.

The bollocking they get is definitely well-deserved, but neither of the twins has the strength to tolerate it. Wayne just crawls under the table and lays face-down and still, waiting for death, and Katy pillows her abominably sore head on her arms and tunes out until it’s over. They’re grounded for the foreseeable future, and just to make sure they don’t have any time to get into any more mischief, they’ll be doing chores over at Uncle Eddie’s as well as at home. The only pity they’re shown is a sleeve of dry crackers and some ginger beer to settle their bellies. The rest of the day is spent hauling bales and mucking stalls.

After dinner they go straight to bed, no shuckin’ and jivin’. They pinkie swear that next time, they’re gonna take about fifty percent off the whiskey and double down on the water. They grow up to be champion lushes, the pair of ‘em.

10. What two songs, two books and two luxury items do they take to a desert island?

Katy:

Music: House of Tom Bombadil by Nickel Creek, ‘cos Katy’s secretly a huge Nerd, and A Thousand Years by Christina Perri even though it’s so Basic White Girl, because no matter how cheesy, she genuinely loves it.

Books: The Secret Garden by Francis Hodgson Burnett (her favourite since childhood,) and How to Invent Everything by Ryan North, a surprisingly useful survival guide.

Luxury Items: A tarpaulin, because Katy’s nothing if not Practical, and sunscreen for Wayne, ‘cos he’ll never think of it and he burns like paper.

Wayne:

Music: Wayne actually has the most rubbish taste in music. If he likes anything good, it’s purely by accident. He brings a cover of Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore as Gaeilge and Animals by Nickleback.

Books: Le Petit Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. It’s his favourite, and it’s set in a desert, so. And since he knows every word off by heart in English and in French, to keep him engaged he’ll also bring Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T. E. Lawrence. Sure, it’s on-theme and all.

Luxury Items: A flint and a hammer hatchet. With these he can make simple tools, and with simple tools he can make complex tools, and with complex tools he can make anything.

(Edit: I only just now realised that perhaps this meant two total, as in one of each item for each of them, rather than they both bring two of each item. Oh, well. What’s done is done.)

20 people dead as Florence leaves ‘a monumental disaster’ in the Carolinas

LUMBERTON, N.C. — The storm once known as Hurricane Florence has killed 20 people, trapped hundreds more and made parts of the Carolinas impassable. But forecasters say the worst flooding is yet to come.

“This is a monumental disaster for our state,” North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said Monday. “This is an epic storm that is still continuing because the rivers are still rising.”

Residential streets have turned into rivers. Parts of freeways — dotted with rescue boats — have morphed into free-flowing waterways.

And the remnants of Florence, now a tropical depression, will probably dump another 2 to 5 inches of rain Monday on central and southeastern North Carolina, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.

But even when the rain lets up, don’t be fooled. The big concern now is river water gushing downstream, further deluging flooded cities.

“Catastrophic and historic river flooding will continue for days across portions of the Carolinas,” the National Weather Service said.

Now, there are fears that the death toll will keep climbing. Authorities reported two more deaths on Monday, both in North Carolina.

The body of an elderly man was found by his submerged car Monday morning, the Union County Sheriff’s Office said.

And 1-year-old Kaiden Lee-Welch, who was swept away by rushing waters Sunday, was found dead Monday, also in Union County.

‘There will be flooding like we’ve never seen before’

That was the message Monday from Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo, whose city is so deeply submerged that no one could get in Sunday.

By Monday, North Carolina authorities were able to open one road into the city of 117,000. But it’s not for residents to use to return.

“We do not want evacuees to go back. There’s too much going on,” Cooper said.

The state’s Department of Transportation said it’s not clear how long that road will stay open, so authorities are trying to rush in supplies.

“We are pushing supplies as hard as we possibly can with the plan that (the road) may not sustain us over the next week,” agency Secretary James Trogdon said.

And supplies such as fuel are in critical need.

The Wilmington-based Cape Fear Public Utility Authority urged residents to fill bathtubs and containers with water in case it doesn’t have enough fuel to keep its water treatment plants running.

Pender County, just north of Wilmington, is also running out of fuel, Commissioner Jackie Newton said.

Houses turn into islands

The flooding is so bad in North Carolina that the state’s transportation department warned people not to travel in or through the state. Some interstates, including sections of I-95 and I-40, are closed.

Emergency workers have made at least 1,000 swift-water rescues in North Carolina by early Monday, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety said. But many more people need help.

Those trapped in floodwater could also be without power for days.

About 488,551 customers in North Carolina and 16,385 in South Carolina don’t have electricity. But the number of actual people without power is far greater, since a single cus

tomer can represent an entire family.

River threatens to swallow Lumberton … again

In Lumberton, North Carolina — a city submerged by Hurricane Matthew in 2016 — residents are bracing for disaster as the Lumber River seeps through a patched-up gap in the levee system.

The river is expected to crest around 25.7 feet. If it gets higher than 26 feet, “all bets are off,” city public works Deputy Director Corey Walters said.

Yet one family riding out the storm on the outskirts of Lumberton said they’re not budging.

“I just feel comfortable staying. We have our dogs and our property, so we stay,” 57-year-old Kenan Chance said.

The family’s homes are still damaged from Matthew, but they survived. Relatives say that whether they stay or go, they’ll have damage to contend with.

Chance’s father, 84-year-old Rembert Walters, says that if his relatives dispersed to different havens, he’d spend all his time worrying about them.

“We’re not going to move until this thing’s over. It’s going to wipe us out or kill us. Or bury us, or something,” he said as floodwater crept upon his porch. ” ‘Cause we don’t run every time this thing happened.”

‘Bring your pets with you!’

Some residents said they decided to stay because many emergency shelters don’t accept pets. But those who left without their pets faced the wrath of passers-by and social media users.

Freelance journalist Marcus DiPaola tweeted that he helped rescue six dogs in Leland, North Carolina, after they were left locked in an outdoor cage.

“We got them out, but by the time we left, the water was so high that they would have drowned. BRING YOUR PETS WITH YOU!” he wrote.

Causes of death include electrocution and fallen trees

Of the 20 deaths linked to Florence, 15 happened in North Carolina, and five were in South Carolina. They include:

— A 3-month-old died when a tree fell on a mobile home in Dallas, North Carolina.

— A man died when a his truck hit an overpass support beam on Interstate 20 in Kershaw County, South Carolina.

— A man drowned in an overturned vehicle on a flooded road in Georgetown County, South Carolina.

— Three people died in flash flooding or swift water on roads in Duplin County, North Carolina.

— Two people died in a storm-related fire in Cumberland County, North Carolina.

— A mother and a child were killed when a tree fell on their house in Wilmington, North Carolina.

— Two people died from carbon monoxide poisoning in Horry County, South Carolina.

— A woman in South Carolina died after striking a downed tree while she was driving.

— A woman went into cardiac arrest in Hampstead, in North Carolina’s Pender County. When emergency responders tried to reach her, their path was blocked by fallen trees.

— Another person died in Pender County, according to the county’s emergency management director. No details were immediately available.

— A man was killed while checking on his dogs in Lenoir County, North Carolina.

— Another man in Lenoir County was electrocuted while trying to connect two extension cords.

— An 81-year-old man fell and struck his head while packing to evacuate in Wayne County, North Carolina.

Where Florence’s remnants will go next

What’s left of Florence is dragging itself north, dumping heavy rain Monday as it moves into the southern Appalachian Mountains.

On Monday morning, Tropical Depression Florence was centered about 125 miles west southwest of Roanoke, Virginia, the National Weather Service said. It was moving north at 13 mph, whipping up 30-mph winds.

Mountainous parts of southern Virginia are now at risk of flooding, mudslides and landslides due to Florence’s heavy rains on Monday, said Guy, the meteorologist.

The storm is expected to move north through the Charlottesville, Virginia, area before heading toward the Ohio Valley, hitting West Virginia and western Pennsylvania.

By Tuesday, Guy said, “the remnants of Florence will be pushed towards the Northeast, where areas from northern Pennsylvania through central New York towards Boston could pick up some heavy rain.”

Armillaria, a Deadly Tree Fungus: What You Should Know

Armillaria, a deadly tree fungus, has become a threat to many of New Jersey’s beloved trees, including New Jersey’s state tree, the majestic Northern Red Oak. Also called root rot or shoestring root rot, this fungus poses a threat to the state’s many beloved parks, recreation areas, and forest lands, especially in North Jersey and the west side of the state along the Delaware River. Armillaria is found in urban and suburban areas of the state as well, threatening so many of our well-loved shade trees and conifers.

Like all living things, trees need to be cared for and protected against harmful diseases and environmental threats, such as storm damage, parasites, and funguses like Armillaria. Here are the key facts and what you should know about this harmful fungus.

What Is Armillaria?

Armillaria is a parasitic, wood-rotting fungus, from a genus of over 30 species of fungi. It’s usually found in forests of trees made up of oaks, hickories, maples, and mixed conifers. It also infects many types of fruit and nut trees, shrubs, and ornamentals.

The fungus can live for many years in woody material. It spreads rapidly through the roots by producing rhizomorphs, or shoestring-looking structures that grow through the soil. Armillaria is an incredibly durable fungus, being able to withstand extreme weather and temperatures.

Why the Concern?

Armillaria can cause wood and root rot, which often goes undiagnosed in trees. Because of the underground networking of rhizomorphs, it can spread rapidly and extensively, feeding off nutrients from tree roots. It’s well protected beneath the surface and can even survive wildfires.

Trees that are healthy are often able to rebuild themselves and repair any damage caused by the fungus. However, trees that are weakened due to environmental factors such as drought, infestation, or damage due to construction, usually suffer major damage or death. The fungus can spread to nearby trees through the roots and stump, creating a center for the disease. If left untreated, Armillaria can be the cause of tree death and decline.

Signs and Symptoms

The most common and noticeable sign of armillaria root rot is the growth of mushroom clusters, also known as honey fungus, at the base of a tree. Removing soil from the base of the tree trunk will expose the shoestring-like rhizomorphs attached to the tree roots. In an infected tree, you may find white feathery mats of fungus which fan out between the bark and the wood of the tree.

Depending on the type of tree infected, other signs include dull-colored or wilted leaves which turn yellow or brown. Branches near the top of the tree may start to die. Most infected confers produce a heavy flow of resin.

New Jersey’s state tree, the majestic red oak, is one of the most beautiful trees in the United States. Unfortunately, oaks are a prime target of Armillaria root rot, and they need protection. Watch your oak trees carefully for any signs of illness. Taking care of them during extreme weather such as droughts and using a professional tree service to diagnose and treat your tree, are ways to help protect your oaks against fungi such as Armillaria. Look for mushrooms growing at the base of your trees as this is a sign they have been infected.

What Can Be Done?

Prevention and early detection is key to ensuring that your trees won’t need removal because of disease. If you are already seeing signs of Armillaria in your trees, then seeking an expert opinion is a good idea to achieve the cheapest and easiest results.

If caught in time, the soil around your trees can be treated with good fungus, like Trichoderma, to alleviate bad fungus spores such as Armillaria. Once the disease has spread throughout a tree’s root system, it is necessary to remove the tree and its stump immediately. This will prevent the disease from transferring to other trees nearby. Removing and grinding the stump of diseased trees is an essential practice to safeguard your entire landscape.

Planting Your Japanese Maple

Because Japanese Maples are somewhat sensitive to extreme heat, planting in the summertime here in the Northeast is not the best idea.

Many — like the chartreuse-leafed Full Moon — display vivid fall color, making the already distinctive tree stand out even more. How to stop invasive tree roots from damaging your property?

Trees are a key part of any landscape, especially your yard. They can provide shade, flowers, or even fruit–or they may just be there for looks. Despite these benefits, careless planting of trees can lead to serious issues for you and your property. Invasive tree roots are one of those issues. To help save you time and frustration, we have gathered this list of common problems and their solutions.

The Root of the Problem

Why do tree roots cause so much damage? What homeowners see above ground is only the tip of the iceberg. In order to survive, trees need large root systems to soak up water and nutrients year-round. These roots will often spread as far as the longest branches, and they may grow several feet underground. Different trees from different environments have roots which are built to handle different types of soil and humidity. In some trees that means shallow or invasive root systems. That becomes a problem when roots underneath pipes or driveways decide they need to grow upwards, or when they steal water and nutrients from other plants nearby.

Trees with Roots that May Cause Concern

Certain trees are known to have particularly aggressive roots. This is not an exhaustive list, but some varieties include:

Maple trees, especially the silver maple, can have very shallow roots which will commonly extend above ground. They can be very thirsty as well, which is another key sign that they may damage your property in search of water.

Willows have far-reaching roots to stabilize themselves in moist soil and to seek fresh water. The Pussy Willow is native to New Jersey and usually less harmful than some other varieties, but all willows require lots of water and will invade pipes.

Poplars and hybrid poplars grow very quickly and can do a great amount of damage in a relatively short time. Their roots are shallow and very extensive–they can spread up to twice the tree’s height. Your HOA may ban the planting of poplars in your community for these reasons.

Any other large tree such as birch or oak. Oak grows slowly but will have a massive root system in old age.

Plan Ahead to Avoid Problems

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In much of northern New Jersey, are fortunate to have quality soil which can absorb and drain water well. When water can penetrate into the ground, roots don’t need to surface to find it unless there are drought conditions. However, that is no substitute for proper tree care. If you are careful to plant trees properly and safely, you will likely never have to take extreme measures.

Learn about different tree options before planting. There are many important traits which may make a tree the right or wrong choice for your property.

Keep all trees at least 10 feet from home foundations, driveways, and utilities. Double that distance or more for particularly invasive species, especially larger varieties.

Plant all trees away from in-ground pools and their water lines. Trees seek water and will not hesitate to invade lines or snake under even the most perfectly installed pools.

Plant trees with shallow roots some distance away from gardens and with shade areas in mind.

Solving your Problems with Tree Roots for Good

If you already have improperly planted trees on your property, you may already have some damage. Either way, you should do something to prevent further damage. Some plumbing services will clear roots from your lines and replace pipes, but they may damage your trees beyond what is necessary.

Vines Can Kill a Tree – NJ Tree Conservation

Unfortunately, there are vines that kill trees in NJ.

It’s fun to visit your alma mater and once again see the ivy-covered walls of your old dorm. It stirs memories and inspires a sense of history.

But what if you see an ivy-covered tree in your yard?

If you don’t stop their growth to remove those killer vines, your valuable tree may soon become a memory, too.

Do All Vines Kill Trees?

In a word, yes. Some just do it faster than others.

Vines Endanger Tree Conservation

Given enough time, all vines will eventually kill their hosts. And if you’re concerned about tree conservation, it’s important to understand this danger.

When small vines grow near your tree roots, it’s not an immediate problem.

But if you see a tree overrun with vines, you should act immediately.

How Vines Start

Vines get started in different ways.

A bird can nest in a tree and carry over berries from other vines.

Other times, vines start as nearby shrubs or groundcover and a seed falls under a tree. All that seed needs to do is attach to the trunk and start growing.

And don’t be fooled by those sweet baby vines on your tree.

They look pretty—at first. But you may realize too late that those harmless-looking vines are killing your prized tree.

Similarly, watch out for vines growing near your trees. They can quickly grow to the base of the tree and start their dangerous climb.

How Vines Kill Trees

Stem twining—the entire stem climbs totally around a support and will strangle the tree

Adhesive disks—approximately 3-millimeter diameter disks that tightly attach to bark or masonry

But there simply isn’t a safe way for a vine to coexist with your tree—regardless of how it climbs.

Vines can:

Keep necessary sunlight from the tree

Hold moisture against the tree

Cause structural damage

Vines Steal the Sunlight

When a vine’s leaves overrun a tree’s leaves, they compete for space, air, and sunlight.

And since vines grow faster than trees, it never ends well for the tree.

The tree can’t continue with its normal photosynthesis process. And the tree, or part of the tree, eventually dies.

The vines also compete with the tree for crucial water and nutrients.

Vines Retain Moisture

The aerial roots of vines cause moisture to be trapped in the tree’s bark. This encourages bug infestations, mold, and tree diseases to develop.

Sometimes a vine becomes heavy with moisture or snow and ice. This can cause affected branches to become too heavy and break off.

Structural Damage

Vines around the tree trunk cause problems, as well.

A thick vine covering can form, covering the spreading roots of the tree. These vines, combined with fallen leaves and rain, trap moisture and decay.

The base of the tree becomes the perfect breeding ground for fungus and bacterial diseases.

This can cause unrepairable damage to the trunk or large boughs, and the tree will die.

Thick vine cover will also hide the structural damage it caused. The tree becomes a hidden hazard for people, animals, and property.

How Long Before a Vine Kills a Tree?

The time it takes for a vine to kill a tree depends on the type of vine and the type of tree.

But unchecked vines will eventually kill a tree.

How to Remove Vines

If you ever tried to remove vines from trees, walls, or in the ground, you already know it’s not as easy as you’d think.

You may even look at vines in a whole different way! They’re not as innocent as they seem!

Vines can have tiny hairs or disks that attach to the bark, making them nearly impossible to remove.

When you remove a vine, be sure not to damage the bark or layers of tree beneath the bark. If you pull on a vine and bark comes off with it, don’t continue.

Wear protective clothing, boots, and gloves. Some vines, like poison ivy, can seriously irritate the skin for days.

Removing Young Vines

Sometimes, you can gently pull younger vines away from the tree bark. Then pull the remaining vine, on the ground, up by its roots.

Use pruning shears to remove smaller vines.

Removing Older Vines

For larger vines, you may need a handsaw or crowbar. Start by cutting off the main part of the vine from its roots.

It’s recommended that you remove vine in 6-foot sections, starting from the bottom of the tree. Continue this process for as high as you can reach.

Be very careful and make sure that you aren’t causing any damage to the tree bark. If you are, stop immediately.

Over the coming months, the remaining vine will die, decompose, and fall off the tree.

However, don’t be surprised if the vines return and you need to repeat the process.

How Do You Keep Vines from Growing Back?

Do this after a rainy day or water the area with a deep watering:

Pull any vines out of a two-foot area surrounding the base of the tree

Be sure to pull the vines out by their roots

Use a rake to pull up stubborn roots

Cover the area with mulch or another non-vine groundcover

Vines commonly found in New Jersey include:

English Ivy—an evergreen, perennial woody vine

Poison Ivy—a poisonous vine, with three leaves on each stem, easily identified in winter by this old scout saying, “Hairy rope, don’t be a dope!”

American Wisteria—a circling, girdling vine that wraps around trees and strangles

Be on the lookout for kudzu—a very dangerous, extremely rapidly spreading invasive vine, recently found in NJ. This vine is nicknamed “the vine that ate the South” because of the extreme damage it caused all over the Southeast.
