There was a way these things were done; an unspoken social contract dictating some illusion of pleasantries in spite of whatever prejudice or disdain seethed beneath the surface, but I'd been warned long before forcing myself down the nauseatingly pristine halls of Kamino: the squad I’d been reassigned to flaunted their independence in every way they could absent thought of maintaining even a glimmer of such abstract notions of decorum.

I wasn’t deterred by those warnings. The thought of clones not only celebrating what self-autonomy they could but boasting that sense of individuality with unapologetic acts of rebellion offered a comfort both in ridding me of my own nervousness for adhering to the strict code of conduct dictated by rank in those first introductions as well as in the simple relief that they were allotted some glimpse of such freedoms at all. The variation in how closely these soldiers followed that code was staggering, fluctuating not just from legion to legion, but even between squads in the same platoon. Seeing some of the more reserved groups left me with a sense of gratitude for the men I’d initially found myself working with. Wolffe presented himself as some uncompromising, heartless tyrant, but the reverie and warmth that I'd so come to love amidst him and his men was evidence of just how deeply he cared.

But Wolffe wasn’t here. He hadn't offered to escort me like Boost had, a gesture I’d forced myself to turn down lest my first impression with my new squad present me as the weak, needy civi they surely expected. Still… I couldn't deny the deep disappointment, the confusion in how… clean our farewell had been… I hadn't expected tears… not from him, though I’d shed more than my share since learning of my reassignment, but he'd been so indifferent… cold… and that wasn't something I was used to from him… not anymore…

I tried not to focus on the shock that had stolen through me as he’d offered his hand when I'd moved in for a hug, tried to dismiss the ease with which he offered some rote semblance of gratitude for the work I’d done and platitudes toward my continued service with the GAR. I couldn't let myself focus on it, on him. He wasn't my commander anymore. I was no longer the medic of the 104th… For some unknown reason, a captain of the 501st had requisitioned me for a different squad altogether. None of it made sense, but I was in no position to voice objection to those orders. So, I walked through those sterile halls alone, cursing the way my heart pounded harder with each step toward the single room they'd been allocated in the stead of a proper barracks.

I'd read their files; studied reports of their unique abilities in addition to character evaluations that, even from the hands of a Kaminoan were… colorful, and I didn't doubt that they’d been granted ample warning about me, as well. I hadn't decided yet if the incredible strengths they were preported to possess were reassuring or frightening, and tried not to let myself form any conclusions until after at least meeting them.

The door to their room opened without preamble or warning, the software controlling it apparently already recognizing me as a squad member with full access. I stared into the jumble of gear and cables and miscellaneous supplies strewn between beds and tables and couches that certainly weren't regulation for several seconds too long, frozen in both surprise and confusion long before finally realizing that, as cluttered as the room was, it lay utterly empty before me.

Frowning, I slipped my helmet back on, eyes flicking to the chrono. I wasn’t late, nor was I inappropriately early… Glancing once more around the room, I also noticed a striking lack of footlockers at the base of each bunk…

Frown growing even harsher, I stepped back and started quickly toward the hanger. There was a mission already assigned to us, but we weren't slated to depart for several hours… My jaw tensed at the obvious conclusion I tried not to let myself draw, strides just short of rushed. I’d been so focused on what first impression I’d wanted to present that it never dawned on me how readily they'd use the opportunity to fully illustrate their apparent disinterest. Part of me wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, to grant excuse for an unintentional mistake, but inventing such excuses would only lead to the creation of an endless cycle of similar events, and I had no intention of falling into that role, nor did I intend to make it easy for them to dismiss me so effortlessly, pace growing faster as I finally neared the hanger.

Their ship stood out among the far more popular LAATs, sharp fins boasting an elegance abandoned by the more utilitarian transports around it. I could just make out a pair of figures carrying crates up the ramp. The first quickly vanished within the cabin upon seeing me, but that quick glance was enough for me to note the shear mass of him, thick legs moving with surprising quiet as those final steps quickened to hide him from sight. The man behind him made no such effort to escape as I approached, dark helm tilting with an air of disdain I didn't need to see his eyes to feel.

“Think you've got the wrong ship.” His voice sounded almost hoarse, words drawn out with a slight drawl from lips clearly twisted into a scowl behind the cover of his bucket.

“Afraid not.” There was no apology in my retort, nor did I try to hide my own annoyance as I looked up at him. “I'm-"

“Don't care.” He interrupted, already turning back toward the cargo hold. “This isn't a cruise ship. Go play nurse somewhere else.” I felt the snarl pull at my face, shoulders pulling sharply back as I drew in a short breath to fuel my reply, but another man stepped out from the ship, strides deceptively laxed beneath a haughty stance, arms loose, torso leaned back just enough to give the impression that he was looking down on me despite his slightly shorter statute compared to the others, and I forced myself to release that breath in silence as I turned my attention to him.

“Thought we were supposed to meet at your barracks half an hour ago.” It wasn't a question.

“Must've missed that briefing.” My jaw clenched at the subtle, mocking lilt in his smoky voice.

“You certainly didn't miss the one about Scipio…” I muttered too quietly for the mic to pick up, but the barely perceptible tension that stole through him assured me he'd heard every word, proving the report of his enhanced hearing shockingly accurate. The home planet of the banking clan was, by all political standings, far removed from the war, thus any form of military presence could be grounds for far reaching repercussions. My knowing the location of their next mission was evidence enough of my place here, and he knew it.

I let that silence linger a moment, head tilting down just enough to indicate my impatience toward whatever hazing they’d planned, and to let him know that I knew he'd heard me.

“Seems like you intended on an early start. If your medbay is fully stocked, then I'm ready to go as soon as you are.” I let out a slow breath before I said it, tone reluctantly gentling into an unspoken olive branch I had to convince myself he deserved as I reached up to remove my helmet. He watched me for several seconds, and I loathed the way my skin crawled at that nauseating sensation of being studied, judged; of the unsettling certainty that I would never measure up to the impossible standards granted through a lifetime of training and meticulous genetic design, but I didn’t shy from the emotionless black crescent of his visor.

“It's stocked.” He finally replied, voice stiff, begrudgingly removing his helm as well. He looked so nearly identical to Wolffe and the others… but… not exactly. Beyond the startling half mask of faded ink, I could spot some differences. His nose was bigger, if only just, the already pronounced ridge even more prominent. The arch of his brows was softer, and his jaw slightly narrower. It was his eyes, however, that threatened to paralyze me.

I’d been to feral planets before; found myself the prey of frightfully dangerous beasts. Staring at him carried that same sense of dread, of danger. Here was a predator. He was stronger than me, faster than me, and I’d come to invade his home.

Without another word, he turned and tread back into the sanctum of his ship, and I knew it was the closest to a welcome I was going to get.

Cait hunched over her chamomile tea. "I don't even know how to untangle all of this," she admitted. The heat of the cup did nothing to dispel the cold that had settled into her bones.

Andreja sighed. "Nor do I. I am afraid we have reached the limits of my ability to aid you."

"You've already done so much," Cait said. "I'm not asking you for more. I just… who could I even trust with this?" She could hear the despair edging her words, despite her best efforts to shove it down. "Between the alien genome, the uncontrolled empathy, and the mysterious powers, at least one of which has people hunting me…" There was nothing humorous in her laugh. "Even if I weren't worried about my own safety, I can't put that kind of target on someone else's back."

"Captain Caitlyn," came an unexpected voice. "Perhaps I may be of assistance."

Cait blinked. "Vasco? I don't—how?" Andreja looked as bewildered as she felt.

"Barrett once programmed me with a complete psychotherapeutic suite. He believed it would be useful while we were alone in the starfield for extended periods."

Andreja stared at the speaker with an expression of horrified fascination. "I would be greatly surprised if that did not end with blood on the decks."

"The suite was active for… three… days before he instructed me to delete it." As always, Vasco had no emotion that Cait could detect, and yet somehow the robot managed to sound smug.

Andreja frowned. "But if it was deleted, how could it be of use?"

"My protocols do not allow me to immediately delete operating software. The suite was moved into inactive storage pending a formal command to delete. A command that Barrett neglected to give." Now Vasco sounded satisfied.

"So…" Cait floundered, "I could order you to restore the suite?"

"Affirmative." Vasco's voice was definite. "This would allow me to provide the necessary assistance, while fulfilling the requirements of security. I," and Cait was absolutely certain that Vasco deliberately emphasized the pronoun, "will not betray your secrets."

"I never thought you would," Cait replied, absently rubbing her temple. She felt like she was teetering on the edge of a precipice—how could she know if this was a good idea?

"I am fully aware of all factors involved in this situation," Vasco added helpfully. "In addition, I possess a unique qualification."

"What would that be?" Andreja asked warily.

"As a robot, I do not possess emotions of my own." Vasco stated. "Captain Caitlyn may therefore focus on resolving her own emotional distress fully and freely, without the additional stress of holding off another's feelings, as I cannot affect her in that way."

Cait leaned back in her chair, completely gobsmacked. "That—that is a profound argument," she murmured. "I just—"

"Do it." Andreja's voice brooked no disagreement. "You shall find no better option."

Cait could still say 'no'. She was the captain; the order had to come from her. But her thoughts were in turmoil, her judgment uncertain. She desperately wanted to curl in on herself and shut the world out forever—but no matter how seductive the impulse, she refused to simply give up. The people who depended on her (who loved her, though the thought was a knife in her heart) deserved better. And if she couldn't trust herself, she could trust them. "Vasco," she said, surprising herself with the steadiness of her voice, "restore the psychotherapeutic suite to active memory."

"Affirmative, captain." Vasco's metallic voice carried a note of approval. "I will require some time to download and install all updates. It would be advisable for you to locate an isolated area in which we can proceed with minimal interruptions. Preferably, one with no negative associations."

That ruled out about half the known universe. Cait rifled through her scattered thoughts, finally coming up with an idea. "There's a place I know on Montera Luna," she offered. "It's the middle of nowhere, and doesn't have a whole lot of hostile fauna around."

"It will be no more difficult for me to commute to Jemison from there," Andreja agreed—and just like that, it was settled.

Cait stared down at the surface of her tea, seeing only the distorted shadow of her reflection. "How—how are—" She cut herself off; she desperately wanted to know, and yet she didn't. Not when she knew how much she had hurt them.

"They are as well as can be expected." Andreja's eyes were kind. "Cora is doing well in her lessons." That didn't surprise Cait one bit. "Sam…" Andreja hesitated, then continued with the air of one choosing her words carefully. Because Cait was fragile, dammit, and she loathed herself for it. "Sam is recovering. I believe he has sought help for himself." She gave Cait an intent look. "He asks about you, every day."

Cait tried to blink away the tears that sprang, unbidden, to her eyes, knowing it was useless even as she did. She sounded so small when she asked, "Will you tell him—no." No. Some things she wouldn't leave to another's voice, no matter how trusted. "Will you take him a message?"

Andreja nodded. "Of course." She rose from her seat. "I shall leave you in peace to write." Her hand fell to Cait's shoulder in a compassionate touch before she left the hab, her stride as easy and unhurried as always.

Cait pulled over one of the ubiquitous notepads and, with an unsteady hand, started to write.

I was complaining to alex about how printers have remained user unfriendly since the dawn of time for tasks beyond the most basic streamlined print/scanjobs, despite being a necessary appliance. he pointed out that printers are always going to be tricky machines because they are technically doing very difficult tasks. On the surface, I do understand; moving paper reliably is a very delicate process with many moving parts, manufacturers often stiffle innovation by viewing printers as a merely conduit for selling ink cartridges, not to mention "user friendly" touch screen software present in modern printers introduce a host of problems on their own. In accordance with my ideals however, I believe that the STE(A)M fields could combine the specialized knowledge relevant to their respective disciplines in order to create a wholly unique printer/scanner device. naturally, this would involve revolutionizing the way we think about the way we think about these machines, as well as the labor that goes into interacting with them. here's what I made alex listen to:

we need a printer you can have sex with and it will in turn use your genetic material over a short gestational period to produce it's own paper and refill it's own cartridges. the actual contents of the print would still be determined by the connected desktop, but the printer would sustain everything you need to produce the document until it was time to refill it again.

the printer serves a similar function as a watercooler in that it serves as a reprieve from labor while not actually being a reprieve from work. when you idle, sip or chat by a watercooler, you are exercising subordination to the social norms of your job vis a vis Congenial Coworker Conversation or rehydrating/taking a breather to maintain job performance (on top of ensuring you get back to your desk on time). your individual personality is digested and repurposed by the microbial culture of your workplace. Refilling the printer by extension is a display in the ability to separate intimacy with a partner from simply doing a printjob (<- colloquial name).

in the interest of alienating the process of refilling the printer further from sex, the printer will remain located in it's usual open area. the employee however will be forced to wear a uniform to indicate they are on "printer duty", and will be afforded a curtain to obscure the body from the shoulders down, encouraging socializing while emphasizing the task as something akin to conventional physical labor. the bleak harmony of the workplace evaporates any post-finish euphoria, finalizing the printjob's designation as merely another task.

once more like the watercooler, the printer will play a role in maintaining relations among coworkers. as one already tends to refer to personal possessions in human terms, the unique features of the printer coupled with it's flawless utility will only beckon employees to refer to it affectionately. "my work wife" and "my work husband" (<- a feminist spin) for the machine itself, and "my baby" for prints (as one already does with important docs). indeed, the printer is family, like all coworkers are.

"is the printer....alive?" not anymore than the lobster at the grocery store or the customer on the other end of the line at a call centre. don't think about it, you aren't being paid to.

“People are sick of the rules of society,” Lavvynder says over the phone from their home in Salt Lake City on a recent Monday afternoon. “Monogamy has become the default. Straight cisgender patriarchy is the default. A lot of us want to do things our own way—not have a government or religion tell us what to do.”

I had asked Lavvynder, 30, who is trans nonbinary and practices polyamory, why they think “relationship anarchy”—an egalitarian philosophy and approach to dating—is getting more popular among young people. According to a new study conducted by the dating app Feeld and sex educator Ruby Rare, author of The Non-Monogamy Playbook, relationship anarchy is on the rise among millennials and Gen Z as a remedy to the loneliness epidemic.

Relationship anarchy (RA) is a relationship philosophy built around clear values: it is anti-hierarchal and anti-capitalist, prioritizes mutual care, and is all about cultivating relationships based on consent. The term, according to Feeld, was coined in 2006 by Swedish writer and activist Andie Nordgren, who said in her manifesto that relationship anarchy “questions the idea that love is a limited resource that can only be real if restricted to a couple.” Though the lifestyle has quietly emerged as a prevailing relationship framework among communes in San Francisco and across Europe in the past decade, it is again finding a wider audience in our current era of romantic upheaval, where young people are staying single for longer and polyamory has become far more common.

According to the Feeld study, one in five people practice it unknowingly, and 36 percent of 25- to 36-year-olds have adopted the lifestyle, compared to 15 percent of boomers.

Lavvynder was in a vulnerable but curious space, separated from their partner of two years, when they stumbled on a friend’s Instagram story about relationship anarchy in 2023. The software project manager had no previous experience with it but felt drawn to its possibilities.

“I also familiarized myself with the Relationship Anarchy Smorgasbord,” a worksheet that helps people set terms for how to define an anarchist relationship unique to their circumstance,” Lavvynder says. “It’s about asking, ‘What are the things that we want to be involved in this relationship and what are we gonna agree is part of this relationship? Are we interested in being creative partners? Are we interested in being sexual partners?’”

Since then they have fully embraced the lifestyle.

We can all agree: Dating sucks and has only gotten harder. Forty-seven percent of US adults say dating is more difficult today than it was a decade ago. That has led to a growing interest in alternative lifestyles. According to the Journal of Sex and Martial Therapy, one in five people surveyed in the US and Canada have had experience with non-monogamy. Nontraditional relationships are especially popular among millennials and Gen Z; over 70 percent say they are open to less-conventional approaches to partnership, including polyamory and open relationships, according to a study by R29 Intelligence.

For relationship anarchists, there is no pecking order among their connections—partners, friends, neighbors, colleagues—are all regarded the same. They treat all their relationships equally, be they romantic or platonic, and believe each relationship possesses “similar or identical potential for emotional, physical, or mental intimacy, love, and satisfaction,” Rare noted in the study. No one person is given preference over the other.

It may seem like relationship anarchy mirrors polyamory, but there are fundamental distinctions. Some poly people apply hierarchies to their relationships—“veto power,” as Lavvynder calls it. Relationship anarchists, who can be poly, do not put romantic partners above anyone. “We’re not making rules about other people’s relationships. We’re just focusing on the connection that we have with that other person.”

One misconception about relationship anarchists is that they have perfected relationship dynamics, but that couldn’t be further from the truth, Lavvynder adds.

“A lot of people will tell me, ‘oh, I wish I could be polyamorous or a relationship anarchist, but I just get too jealous.’ And it’s like, well, I get jealous too. I’m not void of that emotion. I also experience jealousy. If my partner is talking to somebody new, I feel threatened by that. But the way to deal with that is not to make some rule about how your partner is engaging with other people. It’s to figure out what you need to do for yourself,” they say. “It’s really fucking hard, actually.”

It’s all about shared values, not sexual exclusivity, says Sam, a 33-year-old music licensing administrator in Los Angeles who identifies as gender-fluid. Relationship anarchy pushed her to rethink how she defined connection. “Everyone is taught the rules at a young age: One person in your life is meant to be your everything,” she says, likening it to “a Disney fairy-tale romance.” And “any deviation from that is an offense beyond repair.” People, she says, would feel more fulfilled in their relationships “if they were able to prioritize others based on what they actually wanted versus what they believe is expected of them.”

Sam came to the realization following a breakup. She was “freshly out as a queer person,” new to non-monogamy, and in a relationship that encouraged the exploration of her sexual identity. She and her ex were “swingers,” but Sam says she was “deeply uncomfortable and unfulfilled” by all the “casual and often unsatisfying” sexual experiences. When the relationship ended, she dove into the polyamory scene in Los Angeles, where she later learned about relationship anarchy.

José Esteban Muñoz, in Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity, has suggested that “queerness is a structuring and educated mode of desiring that allows us to see and feel beyond the quagmire of the present.” It comes as no surprise, then, that young people who identify as LGBTQIA+ and also practice ethical non-monogamy are finding that relationship anarchy is for them.

“We’ve pushed so many societal norms already, and we’re in this place where it’s like, well, how else can we push this even more?” Lavvynder says.

“It’s a function of more and more people coming out as queer and being in queer relationships. They are realizing that there are alternatives to the norm of what love can be,” Jack says.

Jack is a 30-year-old physician who identifies as nonbinary. They discovered relationship anarchy during the pandemic. Freed from “a cycle of serial monogamy,” they say they were introduced to the lifestyle by their current partner, who they live with in Brooklyn, New York. “We all had so much time to sit and think and really self-examine. I had time to expose myself to these new ideas. For a lot of people you just don’t know what else you can do—until you do. That was certainly the case for me.”

Jack and their partner have been together five years. Jack also has three other romantic partners—one in San Francisco, another in Asheville, North Carolina, and a person they just started seeing in Rhode Island because “apparently I hate dating people that actually live in the same city as myself.” Above all, Jack says, respect is prioritized in each relationship.

Lavvynder, Sam, and Jack requested their last names not be used due to privacy concerns.

Still, navigating relationships doesn’t come easy. “It requires a deep level of self reflection, honesty, and communication that we are not taught and is not modeled to us in any traditional societal structures,” Sam says. “Your boundaries will differ from relationship to relationship.”

“It is difficult and something you have to be conscious of—at least I do,” Jack adds “I’m not that good at it yet.”

Dear listener, I rarely post hip hop, and when I do its usually so deep underground that a brief, intermittent ray from the sun would strike it fuckin’ blind. I like hip hop that is bizarre and experimental and for the last year or so, I’ve been getting increasingly deeper into phonk; a darkly themed and distorted subgenre of trap. The primary reason that I enjoy phonk is because it seems to be a modern worldwide trend for regular people with audio software to create this kind of music from nothing more than disparate samples, which is based on old school Memphis rap and southern hip-hop styles. And while I wish I could tell you a whole lot more about the artist showcased this week, like a lot of other phonk performers, SPYDER550 seems to enjoy his anonymity. As much as I enjoy giving my audience on Tumblr a proper overview of who the artist is, what they stand for, etc… sometimes I can’t dig up anything of substantive value. You, yes you that is reading this, feel free to go ahead and Google this artist for yourself and tell me if you can possibly draw a clearer picture of the person behind the music than I did here. I suppose I should be relieved; generally speaking, there is TOO MUCH information on certain musical acts that I post, and here is a good example of the polar opposite. From what little I was able to ascertain from my research for this post, 550 is very new to the worldwide music scene, having their first album out in 2019. As far as I can tell, they’ve released at least five albums since then, all under 10-tracks at a stretch. I can’t even tell with 100% accuracy where this artist is located on the planet. One profile says they are from Russia, another says they’re based out of Finland, and another says Memphis, Tennessee… which I’ll assume is just a throwback to Memphis rap (i.e. the music his own sounds are based on). I don’t even know if the above picture is really 550, or even what the hell his real name is. But you know what? None of that really matters, because I’ve been bouncing from tune to tune wherever I can find his music online, and I can tell you there’s a lot of noticeable raw talent here. Each individual tune I’ve found by this artist is intriguing, catchy, and thoughtful in its own unique way. His musical arrangements possess a haunting quality that is often repetitive, but repetitive in a good way, all while managing to be enchantingly mesmerizing. A console of the fifth generation, the Sega Saturn was the successor to Sega's highly popular Sega Genesis/Mega Drive! Despite an initial strong start in Japan, a botched launch in the USA and Europe thanks to corporate meddling that had Sega release the console earlier than initially intended, meant that Sega jumped out of the gate with a console that was $100 more expensive than the then upcoming PlayStation as well as not enough consoles to meet early demand and game devs not having software ready for this surprise launch. The Saturn struggled from the start in the West and was never able to recover against the PlayStation or Nintendo 64.

Despite this struggle, the Saturn has amassed a cult following for its unique innovations, interesting software and for being a powerhouse of a 2D console. The Saturn had over 1000 games released on the platform however due to the console failing in the West, a lot of these games never released outside of Japan.

The console you see pictured is my Japanese Sega Saturn which I recently acquired! It was in amazing condition with the box, it almost seems like it has never been used and it plays like a dream! Admittedly the Saturn isn't a console I have a wealth of experience with! I did buy a PAL console a few years ago, however the cost of games in the West caused me to never really go deeper with the console.
