Unit apl
[pt: Unit apl/end pt]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those who see their aplatonic identity as a single unit.
A little different from my unit aplaro and unit aplaroace flags but it maintains the idea of a color transition (the colors blend together and become one, like a single unit).

hello people!
if anyone tells you that you can’t be aromantic/asexual/aplatonic/afamilial because love/sex/friends/family are what make us human
please kindly
a) give them a swift uppercut to the jaw and b) remind them that dogs (nonhuman animals!) produce love hormones, most species (including nonhuman animals!) fuck, cows (nonhuman animals!) have best friends, and beetles (these aren’t even mammals!) have familial units
the only thing that makes you human is being human, don’t let people tell you it’s interpersonal connection because while some people love it, it’s not for everyone :]
wishing you some nice warm garlic bread my fellow aspecs!

Out of curiosity, who do you headcanon of the skills for encyclopedia to be friends with? Of course I am an encyc and percy friendship truther but I'm very curious to hear yours 👀
YOU'RE SO REAL FOR THIS, i love ency-percy friendship <3 you also already have ency-logic buddies and i think they fit so well <33
ency's dynamic with many skills tends to be "talks a lot and [x]'' so it's mostly just who's willing to listen or talk back!! i feel as though many of the skills are relatively friendly to him, but he's not very popular by any means :0 some just don't have the patience for him unfortunately </3
💙 INTELLECTS
Logic considers him a close confidant, and the right hand man of the intellect squad (Logic obviously considers himself de facto leader of his sub-unit) he's a little wordy, but he gets the job done.
Rhetoric thinks conversations with him are riveting (<- good at backing up his facts!) they talk in a way that you'd think is disrupting to each other (constant rebuttals, footnotes, interrupting??), but to them, it's simply the optimal way of discussion for their purposes.
if you get them on the right topic (usually art history related), ency and Conceptualization can talk the entire day away together!
💜 PSYCHES
Volition considers him trustworthy (klaasje conversation quote:"VOLITION - You can trust Pillar-Bookhead, by the way. As far as I can tell, he's not singing to her tune… the *only* one besides me.") and would be very willing to listen to him talk!
Empathy is fond in his passion for his subjects, and gets carried away with him in his excitement when he infodumps!! this is literally the plot of their chapter in Swept Up hjgklj they are good friends (lovers, even. factsfeelings shippers where u at!!)
❤️ PHYSIQUES
ency and Electrochemistry can talk brain things together when echem's in that kind of mood!! they used to talk neurology and brain chemistry together a lot more, but conversations started dropping later on in life
on late nights, ency will find Shivers on the fringe of the headspace. ency will tell her fun facts he knows about the world, about revachol in specific usually. shivers is always delighted, to listen, to be known, to be loved. it's silly, because ency will factually explain an event that occurred, and shivers will nod and then proceed to poetically provide a first hand account of the same event, and ency will update his notes with rapt fascination. its really sweet.. <33
💛 MOTORICS
Hand/Eye Coordination is usually willing to hear him out, and he helps reorganize the headspace library when ency needs a hand (HEH.)
Perception, obviously :] they have a game they play, where Perception will state something it senses ("PERCEPTION (Sight) - You watch the traffic light flicker from yellow to red.") and points at Ency, and once Ency notices his cue, he immediately responds with a related fun fact ("ENCYCLOPEDIA - The standard duration of an average traffic light cycle can range between 60 and 120 seconds.") it's just a silly game on how fast they can do it, in the time between percy's detail and ency's fact :3 trivia speedrun!!!
Interfacing is aplatonic in my headcanons, but encyclopedia's kinda the only guy who can keep up with mechanical mumbo jumbo, so even if interfacing doesn't consider them friends, they still get along really well!! No one knows what they're fucking talking about. hjglkj
Composure is also a listener type!! i think at one point early on, ency was talking about something, paused, and went "…do you actually want to hear this? you look bored?" and composure went "No, no, I promise this is interesting, it's just that my resting face looks like this -> 😐 constantly. keep talking." and ency goes ":] ok!"
these are the skills i can justifiably reason a dynamic with ency!! though im sure there could be others <33 thank you for the ask cedar~!!! :D

Hey Aspecs!! I've come up with some terms I plan to use and I really love them so I'm sharing them in case any of you need them. There are some for Aromanatic, Asexual, and Aplatonic.
qpf - Queer Platonic Family
This is for anyone and can have any meaning or purpose. Also remember, family does not have to be defined by you, it can be yours by just using the label. It could mean two people who come when the other calls for help and that's all. Don't let people question it, fight for your home in this world, define what family means to you. Make the word mean safety, care, someone to turn to in your own queer way. Whatever you need it to be, make it so.
qaf - Queer Aplatonic Family
This is for any family defined by structure, community, without the friend or romance of other families. This could mean someone to call in an accident and that's simply it. Whatever you need it to be it's yours. (there's an alternative for this below)
llqf - Life Long Queer Family
or
llf - Life long Family
I can understand many reasons someone wouldn't use qpf so I thought that llqf and llf may be alternatives that fit within the same vein and also show the importance of the individuals and relationship while also not highlighting typical relationships in a friendly or romantic way. Some aren't platonic but may have people you have written on your call list in emergencies. Or maybe there's another reason, use it if it fits you, or make it fit if you need it to.
qfu - Queer Family Unit
This is for a group, which still can be two or more. Even if someone just considers their pets or plants their family and wants to use it, it doesn't harm anyone so do it. Use it for any reason you desire.
The alternative for above is:
qfg - Queer Family Group
I like unit but I know some might prefer group for sounding more casual.
qfo - Queer Family Oriented
This lets people know your status as open to looking for a family similar to how people say they're looking for friends and partners. It also helps aspecs who don't want family to either set boundaries upon meeting or even steer clear. I mostly think this would be helpful in communication among ourselves but also with others.
nfo - Not Family Oriented
or
nqfo - Not Queer Family Oriented
This is for all aspecs who just aren't up for the above and to highlight your own standing. Aromantics who don't want relationships that are that close, it's completely warranted to need a word or anti descriptor in this case. Also anyone who just isn't looking for a family at the moment could also use this.
npf - Non Platonic Family
or
npu - Non Platonic Unit
Some may have family or their queer community members who might be seen as family, basically family but it isn't Platonic or Romantic. I thought this might work for some who would enjoy defining relationships that highlight the function of a family over the emotional bonds it's often tied to. Family can simply mean two people who both pitch in to live together and aren't really platonic or romantic, or even just a simple unit working together and nothing more.
If anyone has any other ideas with seeing these please say something, I'm all ears, in fact, I think the community might be as well.
Also, please please please, if you think this is a good idea, tell others, I really want people to use these if it works for them. I made this whole blog just to drop these and I would like to know that it helps anyone else.

i read sounds fake but okay (the book, authored by the podcasters) and it does not cover anyone allo aro. it also has no awareness of loveless aros, non-sam aros, or apl aros. it even includes a "what makes us human is... love! of all kinds!!" section to finish up the book.
tl;dr: this is, first and foremost, a book about asexuality, by an asexual and a demisexual. to broaden their perspective, they surveyed/interviewed ace and acespec people for additional quotes. throwing in the greens on the cover, and having separate aro and ace flags as the section break within chapters, makes it promise something it never delivers.
i also checked their podcast, which is how i found out this book is one year old (as of recording an episode for release on 25 Feb 2024), meaning the writing process itself probably happened in 2022. given the lack of perspective, i had not expected it to be so recent.
(going to cut the rest of this because it is long)
the focus on and centering of asexuality while borrowing a bit of the aromantic symbols seems rude at best for people who are clearly aware of the difference between aro and ace. they discuss the split attraction model early on, and they consistently use aspec, acespec, and arospec accurately. oh, and they happen to run what might be the biggest aspec podcast (as in, the only podcast I could name if someone asked me, "are there aspec podcasts?")
i also noticed that alterous attraction rates a mere footnote with a brief definition (and that definition is "between platonic and romantic") when one person being quoted used it. somehow, this doesn't come up for discussion in the relationships chapter. or anywhere.
overall, i got the feeling that the authors were approached with a book deal based on their podcast, but didn't actually have much to say. or just, like, phoned it in. it's a relatively short book. it dives deep into an AITA reddit post because apparently only that one person could be found for the topic of housing. and that's a topic that would have to be revisited to pad out the final chapter.
[i wanted to know what other people thought, so i checked reviews, and the answer is: there's a lot of criticism of the authors' position that you can hate JKR but like HP. accurate and valid; i have nothing to add to that.]
i wanted to be objective, so i scanned the book again. out of 82 quotes, Phoebe gets 3, and Rai gets one. Phoebe, she/they, responded as ace but realized they were bisexual (allosexual, alloromantic, trans) afterward; Rai, they/them, included neither an acespec label nor allosexual.
ten quotes are from people who use a sexuality label other than asexual:
2 gray-ace
4 demisexual
2 aspec
1 acespec
1 aegosexual
(i didn't track individual names; Phoebe and Rai just stand out.)
so in the final accounting, five of every six quotes are from people identifying as asexual, and none are from people who are unequivocally arospec and not acespec (including loveless aros, non-sam aros, neu aros, unit aros, allosexual aros, and aplatonic aros. and yes, there is overlap between those terms, but they all have zero representation in the text.)
i want to be clear before signing off... it's not that i think everyone should know everything about our community, necessarily, but i do think that people who claim to write for the whole aspec community owe it to us to be well-informed and inclusive before publishing.

Unit AplAro
[pt: Unit AplAro/end pt]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unit AplAro (Aplatonic Aromantic): Someone who views their aplatonicism and their aromanticism as a single unit.
I was thinking about unit aroace and thinking about my own experience (as an aplaro), so I decided it would be cool to coin a term for aplaros who does not see their aplatonic and aromantic identities as being split. The color of the first stripe was taken from the aromantic flag and the color of the last stripe was taken from the aplatonic flag. The lighter shades of green and blue were chosen to offer a good contrast, and the middle stripe is an intermediate color between the darker green and the darker blue, chosen to represent a blend between aromantic and aplatonic identities. The arrowed apple symbol was chosen because the arrow is one of the aro symbols and because the apple is one of the aplatonic symbols.
(Note: this term totally includes mesi aplaros)

Banner Bases - Aromantic Spectrum
Flags: Allo-Aro, Aro-Apl, Cupioromantic, Frayromantic, Greyromantic, Quoiroflux, Thelo Aro-Ace, Unit Aro-Ace.
I made a few text banners quite a while back, but I figured that folks may find the plain bases useful.

Note
Nowadays the a-spec community seems to be too preoccupied with separating aromanticism from asexuality and it's extremely isolating to people who don't 'split' their lack of attraction. People need to remember that not all a-specs 'split' their romantic and sexual orientation. Non-SAM aces and aros exist and they shouldn't be pushed into identifying as aroace/alloaro/alloace. Non-SAM aros shouldn't be assumed to be "just alloaros who don't want to label their sexuality", and Non-SAM aces shouldn't be assumed to be "just aroaces who don't want to be associated with aromanticism". SAM using a-spec people need to stop with the "well actually, that's not an ace experience, that's an aro experience", you don't get to dictate what label someone personally uses. Also unit aroaces exist and we shouldn't be required to 'leave out' our asexuality while talking about our experiences in the aro community and then 'leave out' our aromanticism while engaging with the ace community.
Also, everyone keeps talking about how the ace community ignored aros until recently, nobody ever talks about how us non-partnering and aplatonic aros were isolated by the larger aro community until recently. There are issues in the aro community as well and it's high time we acknowledged this. Both the ace and aro communities have issues like pushing labels, gatekeeping labels, isolating and ignoring other a-specs, exclusionism etc. that need to be resolved.
Friendly reminder that arospecs can absolutely call themselves aro and acespecs can absolutely call themselves ace. Aromids, acemids and amids can absolutely call themselves aroace. Aromanticism and asexuality are both spectrums. Some aros and aces don't use the SAM and they're valid. It's not the fault of unit aroaces and non-SAM aces and aros that people think aro=ace. Aromatic people who are arospec exclusionists and asexual people who are acespec exclusionists can go f**k themselves.

Tumblr adding polls was the best thing because it doesn’t matter what you’re asking, tumblr users LOVE sharing their opinions. You could ask something wildly abstract like “What cardinal direction do you associate with the person you reblogged this from?” and by the end of the day it’ll have 20k notes and there’s probably some kind of discourse happening in the replies.

An Incomplete Arospec Terminology Post
Haven’t seen any of these bad boys float around, but! Here are some terms that may be helpful to folks who are like “what is an aro”? This is definitely not a complete list of terms, and I don’t remember where all the terms came from, but here we goooooo!
Important note: not all of these terms are used by the entire community, and there is discourse within the arospec community about terminology and the politics surrounding them, particularly in the identities section. The OP does not intend to make any statements on specific terms intentionally, and corrections from other arospecs (unless starred) are appreciated. Discourse from exclusionists is not, however, and romantic folks are NOT to speak over arospec folks discussing in this post. All terms defined will be tagged in the OP as to make sure that those avoiding specific terms can avoid them.
ETA: Removed the ‘read more’ and is now tagged as #long post for those who want to save their dashboards.
Important Concepts
Arospec: The umbrella term for the aromantic and aro-aligned identities within the wider aspec, which is the aromantic and asexual communities. The arospec has different needs and wants than the acespec community, and both are worth distinguishing from each other.
Split-attraction model: also known as SAM, the split-attraction model holds that attraction to people can be distinctly split up into categories, such as romantic, platonic, sexual, etc. Using the SAM is not mandatory to identifying as aromantic or arospec, and many people just use “aro” to describe themselves for many reasons.
Alterous attraction: an attraction term to describe attraction that is not entirely romantic or platonic, the “crush” equivalent is mesh
Queerplatonic relationship: a self-defined relationship by those within it that does not fit within the stereotypical definitions of a platonic or romantic relationship. You do not have to be aromantic in order to want or be in a QPR, a partner is called a QPP, zucchini, or a plush
Amatonormativity: the sociocultural idea that every single person is the most happy within a heteroromantic, heterosexual, monogamous relationship. Term coined by feminist Elizabeth Brake to describe the systemic ways that this ideology is upheld, and used within the arospec community as well as within the polyamorous community to discuss…
*Relationship anarchy: the ideology and practice of never assuming any kind of interpersonal dynamic is “one way” or “another” based purely on action. Every interpersonal dynamic, be it platonic, sexual, romantic, or otherwise, is discussed between all parties involved in it
Squish: the “crush” equivalent of platonic attraction, usually used to define friendships or a desire to become friends with someone
Arophobia: a specific prejudice against arospec people. Arophobia can be both intentional and unintentional, being called arophobic is not being called a slur, nor is it a dogwhistle for bullying.
Aromantic Identities:
Aromantic: experiencing no romantic attraction, often shortened to aro.
Demiromantic: only experiencing romantic attraction when a strong emotional bond is present.
Greyromantic: experiencing romantic attraction very infrequently. This is different from…
Aroflux: romantic orientation fluctuates but is always aligned with the aromantic spectrum
Lithromantic: experiences romantic attraction but does not want it reciprocated, also called akioromantic
Quoiromantic: cannot tell the difference between romantic attraction and other forms of attraction, platonic attraction is usually the comparison attraction
Reciproromantic: does not experience romantic attraction unless they know the feelings will be returned
Cupioromantic: does not experience romantic attraction but still desires a romantic relationship, this person can also be called romance-favorable or romo-positive (discussed in the next section)
Aroace: an aromantic asexual, meaning they experience no romantic or sexual attraction
Aroallo: an aromantic allosexual, meaning they experience no romantic attraction but experience sexual attraction
Neuaro/neu aro/neu-aro: a term that fits inbetween aroace and aroallo, for aromantics who are neutral about identifying as either asexual or allosexual
Non-SAM aro: an aromantic who doesn’t use the SAM to define their attractions
Unit aro: an aromantic who solely identifies as aro because their aromanticism is the most important part of their identity.
Nonamorous: the most commonly used term for aromantics who do not wish to enter any kind of relationship or dynamic that isn’t platonic. Other terms exist for this, like callistic, but they are not as well known or used within the arospec community.
Aplatonic: an aromantic that does not experience platonic attraction, and.or does not seek out interpersonal dynamics defined by platonic attraction
The Romance Feelings Spectrum
There are many terms used to describe how an arospec person views romance in society and in their life, many of which are debated within the community. The following list are terms that the OP has personally seen used and discussed (and one is a term that the OP uses personally for themselves), some of them are analogues with the acespec sexual favorability terms.
Romo-positive or Romo-favorable: an arospec who feels positively about romance portrayed in society and media. They may seek out romantic relationships of their own.
Romo-neutral: an arospec whose opinion on romantic portrayal in society and media is neutral. They may seek out romantic relationships of their own.
Romo-repulsed: an arospec whose opinion on romantic portrayal in society and media is negative, and often experiences distress and emotional exhaustion when interacting with media that contains romantic aspects or when discussing romance with people in their daily lives. They usually do not tend to seek out romantic relationships on their own.
Romo-antagonistic: term used by the OP to describe their own very intense disdain for romantic media and social norms, it is often also paired with an intense hatred for amatonormativity that prevents people from forming legally-recognized dynamics that exist outside of its “bounds” of acceptability.
Final Note
These terms are not all the terms used within the arospec community, nor should this post be seen as the sole dictionary of terminology. The LGBTA Wiki through FANDOM is a very good resource for finding terms and their origins. Do not apply terms to people without their consent, and this post does not give any readers permission to correct people on their own terminology. Arospec people are the authorities on the arospec community, and anyone else claiming otherwise is being arophobic.

Note
sorry to bother, but what does aplatonic mean? ive never heard the term outside of those stupid jokes about aro people made by aphobes.
aplatonic means that someone doesn’t experience platonic attraction, but some people use it to mean they’re not interested in a qpr as well. there’s important background that always gets left out in the posts you mentioned, which is that it was coined by nd aros because there’s a lot of talk about platonic love in the community and the label helps unite and draw attention to the people in the community who don’t experience that and feel that they are being thrown under the bus and having their experiences devalued.
