the secret to good longform sf writing is you need to know every significant character's favorite food and whether they can cook. this will prevent you from writing something that's like a Plot and Worldbuilding Exploration that fails to include any kind of compelling characters; it also forces you to consider what the world looks like and how the characters act when it is not Time For The Events Of The Story. the second secret to good longform sf writing is you do need to know when to get back to the story. this will prevent you from writing the Redwall series.

Well. Here’s my tiny (tiny) list. Have at it 🥹
#elly's posts#making these lists makes me feel so uncultured ansbxhdhhs#I need to read more… I used to be a voracious reader in elementary school but when I switched to homeschool I basically stopped#and would just reread the ones I owned over and over#it wasn’t til I was like 15/16 that I started reading more again but even then I’m a very slow reader so I haven’t read many new books#ah well… these are some that have meant a lot to me <3#polls#my polls#elly reads

I’ve got some friends and my betrothed doing a little book club. It started with one friend and we’d leave a comment in discord with the percent we were at and then our thought under a spoiler. When we read that far we’d go back to read the spoiler and respond. Then their hubby wanted an excuse to read more, and my betrothed heard about it and wanted in.
At which point I slid forward The Scholomance series, which I’d been pressuring my betrothed into starting and so everyone took it up. It’s been like crack. I have always loved this series and my betrothed was like, “This sounds like a horrifying depressing setting why do you like it?”
But now they’re all voraciously consuming it and I’m living my absolute best life. I try not to comment much as I don’t want to color their perception but these books are so fucking good and now I get to share thoughts with several other people who are having a wonderful time.
#ramblies#the scholomance#a deadly education#the last graduate#I’m pacing my rereads to their percentages#but I’m a really fast and voracious reader so I’m finishing several books at once and trying to put off my reread until my betrothed hits#about the 20% mark#everyone’s around 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the second book so I can read my library books while I wait#every reread I get more out of these books and I don’t generally give recommendations on a broad level cause I like to tailor them#but I feel like most people would enjoy these#if you want a better more realistic magic boarding school that is about hope and cooperation#these are good

I think sometimes you just have to make peace with the fact that your actual hobby is collecting books. And that that's okay.
#i used to devour eight books a week up until I was about 22#i couldn't fathom leaving anything in the house unread#then it's like my brain maxed out#coincided with my cptsd manifesting in crippling depression‚ triggering my bipolar#and hitting that mid-20s adhd wall where all your coping mechanisms fall apart#it's just been getting worse ever since#i can no longer read anything but fanfic#i was able to make a great headway through alexis hall's work but then I fell into a hyperfixation again so#bye bye everything else#i couldn't read comics even when I was back to hyperfixating on comics#i can't absorb things and when I do I can't hold them in my head#i used to be able to pull out entire passages of my favourite books from memory#now I can barely remember what happened in them#sometimes i wonder whether it even mattered that i used to be such a voracious reader#sure it gave me writing skills but i was never able to do much with them because of the complete mental and physical breakdown#and people young enough to be my kids write better than I ever did#i still have the thirst and hunger for knowledge and stories#but no capacity for it at all#books#reading#just adhd things#actually adhd#burnout#book collection#knee of huss

Question: What Dostoevsky novel is most appropriate for a ten year-old?
#my nephew is a voracious reader and he needs thick books to read at school#I know nothing about children's literature obviously#hmm maybe Tolstoy would be better but Dostoevsky is more in line with his taste...

getting back into reading books was the best decision Ive made in years. high school depression then very difficult college years made it so hard for me to focus on books but taking the time to read whenever I can and being intentional with it (setting phone/screens aside, taking my books with me everywhere) have made such a difference... my inner world is so much richer and I feel so much more inspired. if u have been thinking abt getting back into reading this is your sign
#i think that from 2015-2021 i must have read like 20 books at most...#now from 2022-2024 ive read over 80 without counting graphic novels/mangas#and it makes me so happy esp since i was such a voracious reader as a child and it rlly saddened me to have lost my love for reading

oh wait-- Idri spent a ton of time as a kid hanging out at her dad's library, fucking of course modern au Idri would be huge into comic books
#she's already canonically an enthusiastic reader although she hates to admit it#I think modern au idri much more readily talks about comics than books though#especially since she's like 28 so if modern au is set [handwiggles] roughly Now she didn't grow up in a time where it's like... bullyable#or to clarify-- it's less seen as poindexter nerd shit These Days in my experience#she doesn't keep 'voracious reader' on the DL for fear of bullying she just feels like Being Bookish is kind of lame lol#of COURSE she's into COOL SUPERHERO ACTION SHIT!! but nobody needs to know she read the silmarillion#anyway. just thinkin about her getting 'oh cool catwoman costume' comments on going as mistoffelees for halloween lmao#YES 'okay FIRST of all OBVIOUSLY if I was catwoman I'd do the eartha kitt one with the gold chain and belt and a domino mask??'#but NO 'dude are you kidding me that comic book shit is for nerds'#no yeah no she'd be into comics for sure for sure for sure and not defensive about it either lol#my OCs#idri

Relationship Moodboard: Anarky and Inertia
@peranarkia
#Explanation Time: Overall I tried to get a sense of them both and their interests via the tools and tech and through the colors green + red#The stack of books and the cat is 1. referencing both of them being voracious readers. But the cat itself references how Lonnie has compare#Thad to a kitten much to his chagrin in one of our threads. Also the times Lonnie has asked Thad 'cat got your tongue?'#the quote: it is from another comic I love but I think it applies to them as well because Lonnie has definitely had an effect upon Thad's#life. And Thad certainly hopes he has also made an unmistakable mark on their life as well.#Especially with our more recent threads in my head (the one where Thad's ranting; that one definitely has had an effect upon him)#The bandaged fingers: These two and their squabbly and snarky nature toward each other. I also feel like they're both rough around the edge#in different ways. They can but heads so that's why that's there.#Also if there was a way to get down how snarky their friendship is it would be on here. But I have settled for a vibe of their friendship i#the top right corner#but also it being in a museum as a reference to answer Lonnie gave Thad once.#peranarkia

IMAGINE how guilty beetee and johanna and finnick lowkey probably felt knowing they were lying to katniss and peeta (like obvi it was for the greater good) but you can see them at the tree exchange this look like 'oh fuck'
becuase i KNOOOOOW finnick was guilty AF when peeta and johanna got captured because katniss was a mess about it. just they way they all exchange looks
beetee, johanna, and finnick and then katniss and peeta sharing a seperate look of "oh this is some fuckery :( but ok we don't have a choice we are outnumbered"

The Second Smartest Dog That Ever Lived, by Will Pass
A unique, fun read about the (second!) smartest dog ever. Cute, endearing animals of all sizes, fun characters, laugh out loud moments, highs and lows, and even a little philosphy and a giant tiger?!

I wish I had the same motivation to read as I had as an undiagnosed autistic middle schooler
#I was the definition of a voracious reader holy shit#carried into freshman year too#but now I’m yk reading harder books (mostly classics nowadays) and I also have less time so it takes me a fucking month to read anything 😭#granted I still really like the books it’s taking me a month to read.
