I keep referencing my love for Akiro because... it's true. But it's also reached meme-level, with him being my favourite character to draw.
When asked to pick a favourite OC, I usually go for Jan. I love Jan and Akiro pretty much equal amounts. They're both incredibly meaningful to me. I did create Jan first, and the way I've evolved with Jan - the way I co-exist with Jan, like he's my friend, like we're growing up together, I'm getting to know him better with every day that passes - is noteworthy.
Akiro and Jan are definitely my babies. But I don't want people to think they are overwhelmingly my favourites to the detriment of my other OCs - for the purpose of this post no one asked for, I will be focusing on the Murder Fabrication cast. (...For now.)
I tend to randomly hyperfixate on my characters (...not just from Murder Fabrication). It's truly random but every now and then, for a while, I'll co-exist with one of them. Any of them.
But I also have different strong feelings about all my characters. A character that comes up often is Keith. I projected some of my identity onto this dude - but the same as always, as I kept spending time with him, I learned more and more about him, and fell more and more in love with him. Something about Keith's outlook on trauma and reconstruction speaks to me, and I hope to tell a compelling story with him.
A character I'm very proud of is Benjamin. (And of course, he is not without link to Keith. On one hand because: despair. On the other hand because of the trauma and reconstruction thing. Ughhh. Ben. Beeeeeenn. Ben is so depressed. Don't get me STARTED,) I didn't even expect to like him that much at first. (And no, I didn't design him to be "my type". I wouldn't have him dress like shit if that were the case. Don't look at Keith.) Ben is an actively interesting and fun character. You really ought to read Murder Fabrication for him. As for myself, I stare at his trauma and reconstruction.
Speaking of trauma - Noah is my traumacore coping tool. I don't think I show it that much, but the music I've associated him to throughout the years should speak for itself. Noah's compelling theme is that of abuse... you could read Murder Fabrication for him as well. And come back to me for more rambling. I'll just say this... in the latest Beach-themed bonus episode, Noah is largely (lightly) bullied by the narrative, for reasons that probably make sense to whoever has read MF so far. Still, when Keith wakes up, Noah, unprompted, taps him on the shoulder and instructs him to look out the window.
I'm thinking that I should mention a girl - because Murder Fabrication, though you may not realise it, is about women. And The Murder Fabrication Woman is Lois. A character I attempted to name River, after the character from To the Moon, is a character I care about a lot. Lois has a role similar to a River or Misaki Mei, and an attitude the most outwardly representative of the way I write women. Murder Fabrication is about looking forward to Lois. Finally getting to write her is a joy. Writing her from Neo's perspective... is what it's about.
Now, there's Emily. Similarly, a character I'm lending my voice too is definitely a character I care about. Emily is extremely fun to write! I also enjoy drawing her, so more people might know her because of that. I want nothing more than for people to pay attention to Emily. She is immensely meaningful to the narrative.
Lately, I've been thinking a lot about Chloe. In my recent post about accessories, I isolated her as someone you shouldn't pay mind to - which is absolutely cruel. :) Chloe's narrative is about... what is it about? Acceptance? Escape? There's more to come is what I'm trying to say. I can't stop thinking about what there is to come. It's about whether she's allowed to exist.
Such is the theme of Lois and Emily as well.
And that of Alice. Alice gets lumped in as one of the "only normal characters". But that's not true. Alice has nothing right going on. Read Murder Fabrication. Something about Alice feels very aspirational to me - just not in the way Neo thinks.
I'll come back with more later. But I'll conclude with this;
Akiro's name is specifically stated to be derived from the meaning "to give up". What kind of name is that, a curse? At times, it feels like it. Ultimately, Akiro's narrative is about surpassing his circumstances.
Jan is condemned to a Killing Game constricted inside his school uniform. His carefully chosen fashion invisible, his beloved necklace hidden, and those white trousers a nightmare for someone who's easy to clock as a clean freak. Well... that's something to consider. But I'll tell you what Jan's narrative is about: it's unconditional love.
