short fuse if you light my fire [17/?]
pairing: Yelena/Kate (Hawkeye)
rating: T (for now)
chapter word count: 9,208
summary: Yelena decides to go to college. It just so happens to be the same one Kate Bishop attends.
preview:
It doesn’t take them long to get to their destination: a shadowed section of parallel parking alongside a long but narrow riverside park. On the opposite side of the river is downtown — brightly lit and lightly crowded with people — but here, it’s quiet, with small groups only gathered near the water at the very far end of the park, where a line of flickering braziers run through the center of the river. It’s distantly pretty and Kate briefly looks away from the computer to admire the sight from afar — eyes dark and deep — fingers still resting on the keys. “Why here?” she asks. “It's between the two districts we want to focus on. So we can relocate if something happens elsewhere that triggers a major response. As unlikely as that is to occur naturally,” Yelena adds, both a warning and an explanation for why she unfastens her seat belt and leans in to grab the bag of food from where Kate has stashed it on the passenger seat floor. Kate, back on task, casually shifts both her legs to the right to allow Yelena access, but freezes (again, briefly) when Yelena braces a hand on her thigh. “That makes sense,” she says, and only resumes breathing once Yelena pulls away with her prize: the plastic bag that’s been taunting her this entire (extremely short) trip. “So we just… wait? And listen-slash-watch?” “That is what Barton wants us to do. Waiting for an organic stress test. Ridiculous. But that’s why I came up with the idea — and you came up with the name, which was very good, by the way — for this Takeout Stakeout. We are going to be so bored with your ‘mission’, that we should at least have good food.”
