O cómo preparar tu área de trabajo para pintar con acuarela.

El espacio es una de esas cosas que nunca te pasa por la cabeza como artista principiante, pero creeme, el lugar donde pintas es tan importante como lo que creas.

Y quizás te preguntes: ¿por qué no puedo simplemente pintar en la mesa de mi cocina? Bueno, sí puedes, pero debes acomodarlo para que se convierta en un espacio de trabajo. Ésto es importante porque es la forma de decirle a tu cerebro: ¡Hey! Es momento de crear. Así tu cuerpo entrará en modo de trabajo creativo, permitiendo que las ideas fluyan. 

Un espacio bien organizado mantiene a raya las distracciones, te permite experimentar y te ayuda a mantener un buen flujo de trabajo.

Cómo encontrar el lugar perfecto

Primero lo primero: necesitas encontrar un espacio, uno propio. Esto no significa que adquieras una habitación completa (¡ojalá se pudiera!). Necesitas una iluminación constante durante todo el día, pero no directa. Si la luz natural no es una opción, mira en las tiendas los tipos de iluminación y elige la que te acomode. 

Silla y mesa cómodos. Vas a pasar horas ahí, así que elige una mesa resistente a una altura que te permita sentarte derecho sin forzar el cuello o la espalda. Una mesa ligeramente inclinada  puede ser una buena idea para ayudar a evitar el dolor de espalda y dejar que la gravedad haga lo suyo con el agua. En cuanto al asiento, es fundamental una silla cómoda con un buen respaldo. Confía en mí, tu espalda te lo agradecerá.

Organízate. Es clave para mantener ininterrumpido el flujo creativo. Invierte en organizadores que se adapten a tu espacio. Podría ser cualquier cosa, desde un carrito con ruedas hasta algunos estantes o cajones. La idea es tener todos tus materiales al alcance de la mano.

Ordena seguido. Un espacio de trabajo desordenado es una mente desordenada. Cada quien tiene su propio estilo para acomodar, solo asegúrate de que tú sepas que tienes y en dónde está. Hazte el hábito de limpiar después de cada sesión y devolver las cosas a su lugar. De esta manera, siempre evitarás perder cosas y mantener un conteo de tus materiales.

Finalmente, ¿música o silencio?

Para algunas personas un poco de música de fondo les ayuda a entrar en el flujo creativo, otras prefieren el silencio total. Experimenta para ver qué te funciona mejor. Meet the seven new frog species we just named after iconic Star Trek captains!

At the right time of year along rushing streams in the humid rainforests that stretch the length of Madagascar's eastern and northern mountain ridges, otherworldly trills of piercing whistles can be heard.

Are they birds? Insects? Communicator beeps? Tricorder noises?

No, they're little treefrogs!

Until recently, we thought all of the populations of these little brown frogs across the island were one widespread species, Boophis marojezensis, described in 1994. But genetics in the early 2000s and 2010s showed that there were several species here, not just one.

Now my colleagues and I have shown that they are in fact eight separate species, each with unique calls!

These whistling sounds reminded us so much of Star Trek sound effects that we decided to name the seven new species after Star Trek captains: Boophis kirki, B. picardi, B. janewayae, B. siskoi, B. pikei, B. archeri, and B. burnhamae.

I subtly and not-so-subtly built some Star Trek references into the paper, but probably the best one is this one:

'Finding these frogs sometimes requires considerable trekking; pursuing strange new calls, to seek out new frogs in new forests; boldly going where no herpetologist has gone before.'

There’s a real sense of scientific discovery and exploration here, which we think is in the spirit of Star Trek.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that there are at least two Trekkies amongst the authors (including yours truly). As fans of Star Trek, we are also just pleased to dedicate these new species to the characters who have inspired and entertained us over the decades.

On a personal note, this marks a milestone for me, as it means I have now described over 100 frog species! I am very pleased that the 100th is Captain Janeway's Bright-eyed Frog, Boophis janewayae (if you count them in order of appearance in the paper)—she is probably my favourite captain, and I really love Star Trek: Voyager.
