Okay this is an excuse for me to rant (again) about my favourite Cass issue of all time, Batgirl (2000) #33!!!!! I know everyone loves this issue but it's just so so perfect to me. I love absolutely everything about it:

THIS MOMENT of Cass confronting David Cain like AH UGH OW it kills me every time!! Her trying to ask who Alpha is and going 'who...' and then it morphs because of her anger into this stunning, biting provocation: who do you think you are?

THIS PARALLEL OF HER RUNNING FROM DAVID CAIN?????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME AOBDVKLJSBAJB. (The bottom panel is from her origin in NML). And the only difference is she's not crying this time, but then:

She manages to keep it together in the prison, but the moment she leaves she's torn to pieces. She hates him but she loves him. She can't help it.

And the ending. Just after everything. After all of the David Cain stuff, and even after some horrible Bruce stuff, this issue has one of the sweetest endings in the entire run. It's the Bruce-Cass moment to me, nothing tops it. The title reveal is just chef's kiss wow perfect amazing life-changing.

And just... Bruce celebrating the anniversary of Cass becoming Batgirl as her birthday... now you could say 'this is because he thinks of her only as Batgirl', which is true, but I also read this as him celebrating the day she came into his life. He's celebrating the day they became linked through the symbol. That is her birthday, and that is Father's Day. I'M NEVER GETTING OVER THIS ISSUE!!!

I'm bored. Gay people in my phone tell me about Cass comics, specifically any issue she's in that you're obsessed with or any niche storyline you wish more people knew and talked about. Mine is detective comics 947 specifically for how Cass reacts when Steph goes rogue. Takes off her mask and goes "Stephanie look at me look this isn't you 🥺" like that one meme of the girl trying to talk down her dumb bf. Greatest fighter in the world leaves herself open to gas attacks because she wants to be able to make angsty eye contact with her girlbestfriend.
