One sad side effect of big box stores is that you just don’t get lifelong hyper fixation guy access like you used to.
Like yeah I can go to Menards and buy a door.
But it used to be I could go to the door store, and speak to a man whose sole passion in life was doors and who would talk about the history of door insulation patterns over the last 50 years without stopping to breathe.
That man is gonna find me the BEST door option for me.
Seriously my neighborhood had one of these. They were across the street from the lighting shop owned by the guy who could tell you the exact date, off the top of his head, that your property got electrical wiring based on your address.
Now these guys rarely get to own a shop, make a good living, and sell the very finest doors for decades. They’re relegated to Reddit posts which are informative but ultimately do not replace door guy having a door shop.
I don’t want to talk to some miserable, underpaid 20 year old who was in plumbing last week and in doors this week and doesn’t know a hammer from a hanger.
I want my door guy back.

TBH I have concluded that this is the United States' structural role: we fuck up so badly that we make the wrongness of our choices utterly inescapable, giving others an opportunity to avoid our mistakes.
Shout out to the USA for pissing Canadians off so bad it flipped an entire election that was supposed to be a landslide for the center-right, forever in your debt o7
#bad examples are still examples#professional cautionary tale#the entire population of the United States is just FAFO

A large part of the reason families were bigger in the past was because marital rape was not considered rape and birth control/abortion methods were ineffective, dangerous and/or illegal. We can dance around this and act like our great great great grandmothers just loveddddd being mamas so much that they decided out of their own free will to have 11 children. We can pretend that they DECIDED to have big families because it was a financially advantageous decision so they could have more labor around the farm. But a lot of children in the past were fundamentally unwanted and not conceived out of love, children were not a choice women got to make. We need to admit that and stop pretending historical women were inherently more maternal because they were impregnated at the age of 15 and kept having babies until they were 40. That did not make them loving mothers, it did not make them ‘the divine feminine’ and it sure did not make them happy.

This is it. This is the thing.
I'm actually Very Aware of Hierarchies. I've made a pretty serious study of their practical effects over the course of my life and concluded that hierarchies suck, actually. Especially power hierarchies which are usually the ones people are trying to leverage over me.

this isn't "just politics" this is the trump administration weaponizing the power they have been given against american people.
this isn't "just politics" this is a 217 year old act being potentially brought back.
this isn't "just politics" this is donald trump doing exactly what he said he would do before america voted.
