The Cistercian monastery at Zbraslav was abolished in 1785 as part of the ecclesiastical reforms under Joseph II. The monastery buildings decayed, particularly when they were used as sugar refinery. In 1911-1925 they were restored and in 1945 became property of the state. Within a short time the National Gallery becan to use them to house its collection of Czech 19th and 20th Century Sculpture there.
